LABORTARY TEST ASSIGNMENT (SM-II)

Teacher: Maria Ansari

Groups which are assigned Lab 03 and Lab 05, first read this document completely and then meet me before starting the task. The tasks are listed below; following them would make it easy for you to get the work perfectly done. 1. Get the ASTM standard for the practical which is assigned to your group. (Provided through student portal) 2. Read the ASTM document and the respective laboratory session from the workbook. 3. Propose changes in the workbook content and prepare the new document under the headings as shown in Appendix A. 4. Check the apparatus compatibility as per ASTM standards and highlight problems (if any). Appendix B. 5. Follow every step of performance and conduct a test on sample prepared by lab technicians. 6. Once you perform this trial test, prepare your own samples and conduct further 5 tests. 7. You must follow the procedure exactly as written in the code. Test results should be properly tabulated in form of OBSERVATIONS, CALCULATIONS and RESULTS. Graphs or figures should also be attached if required. 8. Refer Appendix C for the sample format of your test results. FORMAT The document must be submitted in word file. It must be comprised of three sections (appendices) as shown on following pages. Use cover page to write roll numbers and group number. Name your document as PRACTICAL GROUP NUMBER LAB NUMBER ASSIGNEMENT GROUP NUMBER (e.g : A1-LAB 01-G1) Title and main Headings (Font size 14, Times Roman, Capitalized, Center text, Bold) Headings ( Font size 12, Times Roman, Capitalized every first letter of the word, Bold, Align text left) Body ( Font size 11, Times Roman, Justify text, Spacing 1.5)

PLEASE NOTE
You are only allowed to use laboratory in your scheduled lab timings or when the lab is not occupied by another teacher.

APPENDIX A
LABORATORY SESSION # _____ EXPERIMENT TITLE Introduction
(As provided in your workbook, write in this part the introduction of the experiment such that the student who is reading it for the first time understands easily the essentials and the outcomes of the test)

Standard Designation
(Code of the ASTM Standard you are provided)

Object and Scope Materials and Equipment

(List down the apparatus from the code and point of which are not available in the laboratory or which are replaced by any other apparatus) (e.g: pycnometer is replaced by R.D bottle) Figure should also be attached that shows every apparatus.

Theoretical Background
(Every experiment has a practical application and a connection with the theory. Write briefly the theoretical background and then the practical applications)

Test Procedure
(List down the steps that begin from the soil sample collection/sample preparation through all the steps of performing test, collecting data and calculating results)

Observations/ Observation Table Graph (If graph is required for this practical then attach an empty sheet of graph paper) Calculations Limiting Values
(Under this heading provide the limiting values or the expected results for each type of soil. Attach also the usual result of graph shape. Proper citation or reference should be provided.)

APPENDIX B
In this part of the document, highlight the problems that you faced to follow the code. i.e: write about unavailability of any equipment of lack of any facility (if any). e.g. distilled water is not available and you have to perform the test using tap water. You also have to write about How to solve this problem or if the problem is not solved then what consequences it has. For your ease, following are the suggested headings for this portion.

Limitations/Problems
(e.g. distilled water limitation)

How to solve it
(e.g. What is the process for the distillation)

Consequences
(e.g. What are the drawbacks of using tap/undistilled water?)

LABORTARY TEST ASSIGNMENT (SM-II)

Teacher: Maria Ansari

APPENDIX C
Appendix C represents your efforts of conducting tests on samples that you prepared by yourself. The results should be tabulated properly. For each sample you have to follow the pattern as shown.

Sample Preparation
(Write down about the procedure followed to prepare the sample. Add three images of sample preparation that can explain the procedure.)

Calculations and Reference Tables

(Identify the formulas and referring tables that has to be used in calculation of the different values. You can only write the equation number or table number, if in Appendix A numbers have been assigned.)

SAMPLE NO. _____

(Attach the prepared sample image. The sample must be labelled as ASSIGNMENT GROUP NUMBER-SAMPLE NUMBER e.g: G1-S1)

Observations and Tables Graph/Figure Obtained Result Comparison with expected result
(Compare the limiting values with your results and if they differ, then point out why?) (Attach the image of the sample after test) (This has to be repeated for all five samples)
