City staff needs a reality check
Dear Editor: I am so tired of the hoopla over Padua Park. Im so tired of the smug, self-congratulatory attitude of city staff. The city is broke. Wake up, the city of Fontana has more money in their general fund than we do, and we are supposed to be the more elite town, oh brother. I dont care what they say, they had the option of putting the park on hold, instead they bulldozed ahead. We seem to like bulldozing a lot in this city. Lets build a park when we dont have enough money to complete the project, they said. Lets build the park even though we might not have enough money to maintain the turf, they said. Thats okay as long as the sports teams have yet another park for soccer; as if the half a dozen others werent sufficient enough. We elect these people to council, shouldnt we have the right to get rid of them? This town needs a real wake up call. We are not immune. It is time to get rid of the grossly overpaid staff and bring in people who see the tree for the forest! The council, commissions and department heads all have their heads buried in the sand. They have their hands covering their ears. I am reminded of the three monkeys; see no debts, hear no debt and, most importantly, speak of no debt!

cigarettes. Auerbach felt that smoking cigarettes was a nervous habit that no one should cultivate, yet saw the cigar as a form of relaxation. Once Red began to light up on TV when a Celtics victory was assured and network announcers made an issue of it, Auerbach made it his trademark. In later years, the habit also affected his health. Home for Auerbach, his wife and two girls during the off season, was in Marylands fashionable Chevy Chase district, where in most kitchens the pot called the kettle chartreuse! While in Boston, Red lived alone in a modest suite at the Hotel Lenox, whose dcor was never a candidate for the pages of Architectural Digest.

Dear Editor: In this years elections, corporations and unions will be able to spend unlimited amounts of money in secret to support or oppose candidates because of the Supreme Courts recent decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which overturned the ban on corporate spending in candidate elections that was in place for more than a century. Even foreign-controlled corporations will be able to spend in secret. Special interests and corporate lobbyists now have even more opportunities to corrupt our democracy. We, as concerned citizens, must take action to protect our elections. Very soon, the House of Representatives will consider the DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 5175). This bill will require complete disclosure of corporate and union election advertising and require CEOs to stand by their ads with clear disclaimers. The DISCLOSE Act is expected to be
voted on in the House soon. We must act quickly to protect the 2010 elections from being swamped with secret corporate and union money. The League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area asks you to contact our members of the U.S. House of Representative to urge them to support the DISCLOSE Act. Secret spending of unlimited funds by corporations and unions cannot be allowed in our elections. Congress must act quickly to protect the 2010 elections. Voters deserve to know who is paying for election advertising. Secret money, especially secret foreign money, has no place in our democracy. Act now to urge Congress to act quickly to protect the 2010 elections. Voters deserve to know who is paying for all election advertising. Sister Terry earns esteemed award from Maria Shriver
he lives of people leaving prison are at a crossroad as they decide whether to move forward down a new path or step backwards into old habits.
Sister Terry Dodge, executive director of Crossroads Inc., has dedicated her life to helping women choose the right path as they reintegrate into society after being incarcerated. Her years of service and belief in people often cast aside by society due to their criminal backgrounds has earned her a prestigious award presented by California First Lady Maria Shriver. Named for the Roman goddess, the Minerva Awards honor remarkable women who have stepped forward in the spirit of Minerva and changed their country with their courage, their strength and their wisdom. Sister Terry, as she is warmly referred to, will received the award in October at the Womens Conference in Long Beach. And she will have good company at the ceremony. Fellow award winners this year include media mogul Oprah Winfrey, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day OConner, Operation Gratitude founder Carolyn Blashek and Oral Lee Brown, whose foundation helps disadvantaged high school students in Oakland pay for college. Its unbelievable, Sister Terry said. Never in my wildest dreams. To have Sandra Day OConner and Oprah. I have no words for it. Its very exciting.

Teachers defend their position before CUSD board
ountain View Elementary School kindergarten teacher Gracie Celis, along with Claremont Faculty Association (CFA) Bargaining Team members David Chamberlain, Ann Hardy and Joe Tonan shared concerns about the negative perception of teachers at Thursdays Claremont Unified School District board meeting.
The 4 instructors joined together for a 20-minute public comment session, emphasizing that teachers go above and beyond the requirements of a regular school day. I think that teachers are misunderstood, Ms. Celis said. The message being given out there is that teachers are selfish and we dont want to do furlough days. Thats a message I read out there and honestly, its heartbreaking to me. We have a humongous responsibility and asking the students to give up 6 days in order to balance the budget, when you have a reserve that I feel you could look into, would be a better option. Ms. Hardyalso pointed out the lack of trust CFA has for the district due to a series of events that began with the district planning to add former mediator Ron Bennett to its own negotiations team. You say 6 furlough days will save all the jobs. So will spending a portion of the 9 percent, probably 10 or 11 percent reserve without hurting students and teachers, Ms. Hardy pointed. And there will still be money left above the 3 percent required. Ms. [Lisa] Shoemaker stated at one board meeting that using the reserves would be like a family dipping into their savings account to pay their mortgage to save their home. That is ludicrous. I cannot think of anyone willing to walk away from their home with a substantial amount of money in their savings account. Mr. Chamberlain admonished the district and board to maintain integrity during the economic crisis. He said the teachers are one of the main reasons for CUSDs strong reputation.

The very notion that teachers are not doing their fair share is terribly disheartening when you know that the outstanding reputation of this district is built on the backs of your teachers, Mr. Chamberlain explained. The reputation of this district is insured every day by our hard work, by our commitment to academic excellence, by our stewardship of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, by our daily commitment above and beyond the standard work day. Later in the board meeting, CUSD Superintendent Terry Nichols discussed his appreciation for the teachers and the impact they have on the districts well-being. He publicly denied accusations that he believes that teachers are not doing their fair share. The rumor that I dont believe in teachers is untrue, Superintendent Nichols said at Thursdays meeting. I do believe in the teachers. It is imperative that we move forward together. Dr. Nichols also stated that teachers and staff are dedicated to their professions. All teachers in Claremont and staff are committed to what we do, he said. The idea of what teachers dohow they go above and beyondhas never been in question. Teachers put in their own time and money and no one ever questions their commitment and time they spend with the kids. Survey indicates more support for bond measure Though many Claremont residents would support a parcel tax, the latest results of a survey conducted by the TBWB Strategies consulting firm indicated a bond measure could be more feasible to pass come this November. Though the survey concluded with 63 percent in favor of a parcel tax, 60 percent of those surveyed would support a bond measure that needs just a 55 percent approval vote. A parcel tax needs a 67 percent approval vote to pass.
The survey was administered between April 23rd and May 4th to 600 voters in the Claremont Unified School District. [Theres] steady support for the bond, said TBWB representative Jared Boigon. [The] parcel tax is certainly possible in this community but it would require a lot of things to go right. Along with helping the district get out of deficit spending, the bond would allow for more protection of district jobs and technology upgrades throughout CUSD. Survey committee member Lee Jackman would like to see CUSD classrooms reflect the current age. Todays students understand and constantly use computers, the Internet and social networking sites like Facebook, Ms. Jackman said. They rarely use reference books. If students have a question, they go to the World Wide Web. Our classrooms dont reflect todays reality. Our students technology and their interests far outpace the resources that we are providing them. Mr. Tonan said that CFA is supportive of the future decision to implement a bond. A resolution on whether the district will choose the bond measure or parcel tax may be voted on by the board as early as July. District personnel to shuffle with resignations, retirements Several faces within the district will be in new places as the result of a unanimous board vote. One of the results of the decision is Oakmont Outdoor School Principal Kevin Ward being reassigned to become the new CUSD director of human resources. Mr. Ward will replace longtime CUSD administrator Devon Freitas, who is retiring this month. Elizabeth Jefferson will become the new administrative assistant to Superintendent Terry Nichols on Friday after Linda Hunt officially retires later this month. Other retirees include CUSD nurse Cynthia Estep-Tonan, speech and language pathologist Cynthia Thomas, CUSD nurse assistant Vivian Larick and food services assistant Terry Dobias. Miffed residents question city support of liquor license
ome residents living near Padua Hills Theater are not happy about the possibility of theater operators getting a liquor license.
In December, the operators at the venue popular for weddings and other ceremonies applied for an alcohol license with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control. If the license is approved, beer, wine and hard liquor can be sold at Padua Hills Theater by Chantrelles Catering until 1 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Currently, alcohol is permitted at the site through the use of a caterers alcohol license. But by using the caterers license, event organizers are limited in the number of events where they can sell alcohol. There are several houses within 100 feet of the property on Via Padova and more homes nearby along Via St. Ambrose. Residents living in the area feel the quiet neighborhood is not an appropriate location for a commercial venue to be selling alcohol late at night. Among the concerns are the potential for drunk driving, excessive noise and littering caused by guests.
City supports the license adua Hills Theater and the surrounding property are owned by the city. In 2008, the city agreed to a 55-year lease agreement with Arteco Partners and Chantrelles Catering to use the property for both private and community events. The city has a vested interest in seeing the property achieve commercial success, Mayor Linda Elderkin said. We went into this partnership with Arteco to have the theater renovated and we certainly want to see the whole project flourish so they can pay for their financing and host both private and community events, she said. We want it to work out well for them and the whole community. At a city council meeting on May 11, the council met in closed session to discuss the Padua Hills Theater

liquor license. Ms. Elderkin announced at the meeting that the city would cooperate with the ABC and support the effort of Chantrelles Catering to get the liquor license. The city sent a letter of support to the local ABC office and city staff began providing them with all the necessary information. When asked if changes are needed to the lease between the city and Arteco Partners, Ms. Elderkin said, We looked into [whether] we had to make changes to
the lease. Our attorneys were consulted and advised that changes were not necessary. When we made the ground lease with Arteco Partners, we discussed all uses of alcohol, she said about the protests. It was understood there would be events with alcohol served and there were meetings with neighbors and the Home Owners Association supported the lease. Alcoholic beverages have been served

Saturday, May 29 A womans laptop was stolen during a party thrown by her daughter at the familys home. Sometime between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., the 20-year-old daughter had 15 friends over at the house on the 500 block of Black Hills Drive. During the gathering, 4 additional acquaintances showed up who were not known to the host. During the time they were there, the $1200 laptop went missing. Police are interviewing those who attended the party to try to determine who might have taken it. *** An alleged drunk driver was involved in a hit and run with another motorist before crashing his car into a tree and attempting to flee the scene. At 10:30 p.m., a 29-year-old Claremont resident was driving near Indian Hill Boulevard and Armstrong Drive when she was rear ended at a stop sign. The woman told police the other driver drove away from the accident and gave a physical description of the driver and a passenger. The driver continued south on Indian Hill Boulevard and turned onto Base Line Road where he crashed his vehicle into a tree on the 500 block of East Base Line Road. Police responded to the scene but were unable to locate anybody in the car. With a description of the suspects, police conducted an area search and located 2 men in the parking lot of St. Lukes Lutheran Church at 2050 N. Indian Hill Boulevard. The driver, Frank Guerrero, 22, of Moreno Valley was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run and driving with a suspended license. Passenger Angel Guzman, 29, of Moreno Valley was arrested for public intoxication. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Guerrero denied that he was driving any vehicle. The female victim was not injured and sustained minor damage to her vehicle. Sunday, May 30 An 83-year-old woman volunteering at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church had her wallet stolen. While the woman was serving donuts to church guests sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., a thief entered the kitchen and stole the wallet out of her purse. The wallet contained her driver license and
Man with motorized scooter helps police chase down suspect

On Wednesday June 2, a good Samaritan riding a motorized scooter helped police detain a fleeing suspect. Around 10:45 p.m., an officer tried to stop a man riding his bicycle on Foothill Boulevard near Towne Avenue for riding at night without lights. The cyclist refused to stop for police and pedaled off on his bike. Witnessing the scene, the man on the scooter chased down the cyclist and rammed his front wheel into the back wheel of the bike, causing both men to hit the pavement. credit cards. Police are investigating some subsequent use of her credit cards after the theft to try to locate the perpetrator. Monday, May 31 A car parked outside of a home on the 900 block of Cedar Crest Road was stolen. The theft happened between 9:15 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. At 8 a.m. the following morning, police in San Bernardino located the 1997 Ford Explorer and arrested the driver, 29-year-old Derrick Marshall of West Covina. The vehicle was returned to its owner. *** The officer was able to get the suspect in handcuffs before he could try to flee the scene again. It turned out the man is a parolee at large and was carrying a pipe used for smoking methamphetamine. Theodore Staak, 44, a transient was arrested. He was not injured during the altercation. The scooter driver from Ontario complained of pain to his leg but refused medical attention.
A man was arrested for drunk driving and drug possession while driving without headlights. Around 2:30 a.m., the Pomona man was driving southbound on Mountain Avenue near San Jose Avenue. A patrolling officer pulled over the vehicle and determined that the driver, 21year-old Erick Ramirez was under the influence of alcohol. A subsequent search uncovered a bag of methamphetamine in his pants pocket.

Sister Terry began as director of Crossroads Inc. in 1989 after moving to the area from Oakland. She previously worked as a teacher and with troubled individuals in county jail and juvenile hall while interning as a chaplain. It was the experience of her younger brother which led Sister Terry down her current lifes path. His drug addiction got him into trouble with the law and he was in and out of jail over a 12-year period. When he finally was ready to turn his life around, Sister Terry found little resources to help him. I found that most often people looked at a persons history rather than on what their hopes and dreams were, she said. Judgement was made not on what they wanted to do but on what they had done. I just found that very difficult and wanted to do things differently. The hardships and lessons learned with her brother have shaped her outlook and approach in working with people coming out of prison. I am very adamant about recognizing people as people, she added. I dont work with parolees. I dont work with felons. I dont work with criminals. I work with women. Yes, they have committed crimes but they are more than their behaviors. There is more to people than that. Crossroads Inc. opened in Claremont in 1975 and now has 2 homes in the city and another in Pomona. Each of the homes in Claremont have enough space for 6 women to live in at a time. Sister Terry hopes the award will serve as an affirmation of the work Crossroads Inc. does and the women who have successfully turned their lives around. She also expressed gratitude to the community for supporting the organization. Claremont needs to be commended for not just allowing Crossroads to be here and not just tolerating Crossroads, but really accepting Crossroads, Sister Terry said. What we do is not us alone, its the whole community. The women get support here, but its the positive interaction with the community that makes a world of difference.

there for many years. I must admit these concerns are a little surprising. The neighborhood could have brought these concerns to us at that point.
ABC review process hen applications come in for liquor licenses, the ABC conducts an investigation, interviewing residents near the location, city staff and the local law enforcement agency. Notices are posted on the building to allow people to file protests if they so desire. We gather all the information, review it all, review any protests, and discuss whether any operating conditions can mitigate the concerns brought up in the protests, said Hilarie Vazquez, District Administrator for ABCs office in Monrovia. One complaint was filed by Gary Mizumoto, who lives near Padua Hills Theater. Part of the protest was a police report about an incident that occurred the night before the theaters grand opening fundraiser on June 14 last year. An intoxicated wedding guest disappeared from the theater shortly before midnight, causing a manhunt involving a police helicopter and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. The man was eventually located and arrested for public intoxication. When asked about the incident, Ms. Vasquez said she heard a different story about what happened from the
citys police department. She said the man was found at his home in Montclair by police, rather than hiding under a car parked on Via Padova. Claremont police could not explain the difference in information that was initially provided to and reported by the COURIER and later given to the ABC office. I dont know where they got that information, Claremont Police Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen said. Regardless of what happened that night, Ms. Vasquez said it was an isolated incident that would not influence ABCs decision on issuing a license. That one particular incident would certainly not give my agency grounds to deny this license, Ms. Vazquez said. Thats the only incident to happen over this past year. We sometimes hear of 7 to 10 incidents per month like in some Village locations. One in a year isnt grounds for denial. Residents say there have been more incidents of dangerous behavior due to intoxicated guests that have gone unreported. Mr. Mizumoto gave one example of home carport on the S-curve of Via Padova that has been damaged at least 4 times by passing motorists. Police have also been called on several occasions due to noise complaints coming from the theater.
Residents grow frustrated ome residents believe their quiet neighborhood will suffer if a commercial venue with a liquor license is operating in their midst.
This is a quiet little residential neighborhood with families and children living here, said Phyllis Deleo, a resident on Via Saint Ambrose. Weve been fighting this from the beginning and it feels like weve exhausted all our possibilities. Its very discouraging. Mr. Mizumoto compared the situation to the recent 7Eleven controversy in Claremont, where neighbors essentially blocked the convenience store from opening at a location at Mills Avenue and Foothill Boulevard with vocal protests. He feels the opposition is just as strong in his neighborhood to late-night alcohol sales as the neighborhood near the potential 7-Eleven. In that instance, the city decided it is not a good area for that kind of use, even though its located in a busy area that is zoned for commercial use. The theater is in the middle of a residential area, Mr. Mizumoto said. I guess I dont understand why the city said no to 7Eleven due to alcohol concerns while they are totally behind Chantrelles. It doesnt seem consistent or fair. Richard Lindholm of Chantrelles Catering declined a request for an interview. He has retained a lawyer to handle the liquor license application. According to residents, communication has been cut off between neighbors and theater operators since the lease agreement was signed by the city. The ABC is set to make a final decision on whether to issue an alcohol permit at the site later this month.

It started with a house on a hill

hen I look at the beautiful campus of Casa Colina in Pomona, I am always reminded of two women with Claremont tiesFrancis Eleanor Smith and Margaret Fowler.
Francis Eleanor Smith is also called Mother Smith and is recognized as the mother of Casa Colina. Eleanor lived with her family on Sumner Avenue across from where Sumner-Danbury School is now located. The family had citrus orchards surrounding the Sumner Avenue house and also on Garey Avenue in Pomona. One of the Smith children, Blackwell, was part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelts Brain trust. In her early childhood, Francis had suffered and partially recovered from Polio, but the disease had left her with a post-polio disability. Using a wheel chair for six years, water therapy, and exercising had allowed her to overcome her disability. She became a nurse and started to devote herself to children with physical disabilities. Margaret Brewer Fowler was from San Francisco, California and is best known in Claremont as a member of the original Scripps College Board of Trustees and for the garden created in her memory at Scripps. In southern California, Margaret is known as the founder of the Junior or Boys Republic, a youth facility, in Chino Hills. Margaret had always been concerned about changing the behavior of boys in trouble, so that they could live productive lives. She was asked to join a Los Angeles County committee that was investigating ideas for dealing with rebellious boys. In 1907 Boys Republic was founded with a grant for $10,000 from Mrs. Fowler, who also purchased for the fledgling non-profit, a 211-acre farm in Chino Hills. She also provided funds for the first buildings on its main campus, designed by Myron Hunt. In order to be near the school and the boys, Margaret built her own country, Casa Colina, (house on the hill) residence, also designed by Myron Hunt, right next to the school.
Eleanor and Margarets lives came together through Eleanors ceaseless fund raising in southern California for disabled children. Their missions came together on the ranch in Chino Hills. Margaret allowed Eleanor to use one of the old rambling adobe structures for the first treatment of disabled children. Polio was rampant during the early years of the 20th century. There was no vaccine until the 1950s and many children and adults were often left partially or fully disabled. Margaret Fowler died in 1931, leaving her Chino Hills home to Boys Republic. When Eleanor Smith was proclaimed American Mother of the Year in 1936, one of her colleagues in the disabled nursing area, Lincoln Wirt, developed the idea of establishing a post-polio treatment center in Pomona Valley as a tribute to her. With the help of 30 or 40 friends and an offer from Boys Republic and the Fowler family for a lease-hold on the Margaret Fowler mansion for $1.00 a year, the Casa Colina Convalescent Home for Crippled Children became a reality. The first patient was admitted in October 1938 and over the next 20 years more than 2000 patients were restored to a more normal life through the rehabilitation therapies introduced by Mother Smith. Casa Colinas unique therapies were highly successful and not limited to those who had Polio. People disabled by accidents, birth defects, and chronic disease also received rehabilitative care. Eleanor was the house mother to the many children treated at Casa Colina. She
was also the chief fundraiser. She traveled extensively in California and throughout the United States to raise money for her children. There were many financial crises when the staff was due to be paid and there was no money in the treasury. On many such occasions, Mother Smith picked up the telephone and money arrived. By way of letters, telephone calls, public appeals, personal contact and special benefit events, The Friends of Casa Colina grew from a few hundred to more than 11,000 people living in California, many other states and abroad. Closing her 14-year labor of love, Eleanor Smith died of a heart attack in 1952 on the streets of Hollywood following a fundraising event at the Los Angeles Palladium. Even without Mother Smith, her work continued and it wasnt long until applications outnumbered beds at Casa Colina and planning ensued for a new building, a new building to treat patients without Polio. The Salk vaccine became available in 1955 and reduced Polio cases by 90 percent. Patients from Chino Hills were moved to a new building in Pomona in 1960. The land where the facility is located was once one of Mother Smiths family citrus orchards. Since that time, the mission of Casa Colina endures and new services and treatments have been added: back pain management; new childrens service programs; spinal cord rehabilitation programs; physical and occupational therapies; Multiple Sclerosis and GuillianBarre services and many other programs. In 2001 ground was broken for the Casa Colina campus renovation project. A $40 million bond issue had been sold to complete the campus and in 2005 the new Casa Colina Hospital opened and patients were transferred. Mother Smith would be proud!

Dear Editor: Kudos to Councilman Corey Calaycay, taxpayers friend. In a city that loves public-sector spending and authority, he improves our community deliberations with a second opinion and when necessary casts a dissenting vote. Earlier this year, Corey joined the council majority in wisely rejecting a commissions proposed ban on outdoor smoking in Village West and other Claremont locations. In late May, he was the only vote against hiking the landscaping and lighting assessment. As your article noted (May 29), Mr. Calaycay has consistently opposed these annual increases. As the story also showed, theyre small but they add up. The same is true of the little bans and requirements the more statist-minded in our town have a tendency to support. The outdoor smoking ordinance was easier to defeat only because it was so blatantly intrusive. Mr. Calaycay is a public servant who keeps his priorities straight, in a time when government is squeezing the lifeblood from our once-Golden State.

They also are banned from raising or spending money beyond the limited amount or face fines, possible jail time and prohibitions from running for office in the future. Taxpayers and public funds are protected. We feel its a beginning of securing democracy for the people. We look at our democratic republic and wonder how corporations have been given the right of personhood with their overpowering financial means allowing them to displace the voice of the people. We only need look at the amount of money being spent by political campaigns to realize that candidates must get backing primarily from corporations to be able to compete in the political field. Our primary source of news today, television, is the main beneficiary of this spending for the numerous ads and campagins. We are not likely to receive unbiased reporting from this media on the abuses in this practice. There is a very real conflict of interest. We need to return to a belief in the power of the people. Proposition 15 is an opportunity to move toward that goal. The process of going out and meeting people to talk about issues and hear from voters is a bonus for grass-roots involvement. Maybe we will be able to say We the people and not We the poeple and the Corporations. That is our reason to vote for Proposition 15.

Dear Editor: Taxes have become a dirty word. No one wants to pay them; and politicians, who know we cannot solve our financial problems any other way, rarely come out in favor of them. So can someone tell me why it is okay to decide to tax one group of professionals and not another? School districts throughout California are deciding to cut salaries or give temporary furlough days to their employees. This is a very interesting choice for solving part of the states economic woes. I also have to say, this solution feels like a tax to me. I have worked hard to become a teacher, gotten an MA in my subject area, tried to keep current on all of the changes in education, my field, the
culture, and my kids lives; and because of my 30 years of dedicated teaching, I feel I deserve every penny of my pay. I have an idea. Why dont we tax only contractors, engineers, accountants, clerks, barbers, lawyers or doctors? Many would think this absurd; yet avoiding the budget crisis on the shoulders of teachers is acceptable to many. Keep in mind, before the poor planning of our state and federal governments, no one would have said teachers were paid adequately for their preparation or responsibility. Maybe it is time to acknowledge that we have cut as much fat as we can out of education. Maybe we need to recognize that one of the costs of an educated public is that we have to pay for it. Maybe we need to recognize that Proposition 13, though perhaps well intended, needs to be altered 30 some years later. Maybe we have to decide that ranking the 46th state in student spending is unacceptable. So maybe we need to think about taxing everyone for the privilege of living in a generally safe, educated, clean, civil society. Lets not pretend that a furlough day isnt a tax. I am more than willing to pay my tax if everyone else does, too.

t is estimated that Americans speak approximately 16,000 words per day. Most of us pass the day transitioning from one involved conversation to another. We express sentiment by stringing sentences together, listening to our partners and responding in turn. There are some words, however, that sound more like noises than words. They involuntarily escape our lips whether we are in company or alone, adding some umph to our lexicon.
Yelping out of joy, pain or frustration is a daily occurrence for most. Minor outbursts like ouch! that hurt, brrits cold and mmm, that was yummy roll easily off the tongue. Although we learn in grammar class that these expressions are interjections, linguists call them response cries. They differ from other interjections in that their sole purpose is to underscore an emotional response. Consider a standard interjection, such as the expletive damn. Damn can be used as an interjection (I forgot the damn keys) an adjective (damn! I forgot the keys) or a verb (damn those keys). Oops, on the other hand, is a response cry. It cannot serve as a verb, adjective, noun or adverb, for that matter. One is constrained to choose oops, I forgot the keys over I forgot the oops keys or I oopsed the keys. Of course, there is always oops, I forgot the damn keys. In any case, response cries are limited. Another quality that sets these interjections apart from others is that each response cry has a very spe-

cific use. Unlike damn, phooey or great, which can be each be used in various contexts, a response cry has only one meaning. Only a native speaker (or someone very proficient in English) can identify precise usage. Some of the most common response cries in English are: aha, ah, brrr, goody, hey, hmm, hmph, mm, my, oh, oops, ooh, ouch, phew, shh, shoo, ugh, uh-oh, um, whee, whoa, whoops, wow, yay, yikes, yipe, and yuck. Given that response cries vary from language to language, these expressions often pose a struggle for the English language learner. In his recent book on language, the Harvard linguist Stephen Pinker provides an example of a native speakers inherent knowledge of response cries. He posits that every English speaker knows exactly what to say when they see an adorable baby, discover a worm in their apple, drop a napkin, discover a drafty window or sip a warm spoonful of soup on a cold dayahhh. English speakers abroad may encounter similar challenges when navigating a foreign language. Years ago, while living in Guatemala, I accidentally
slammed my shin into the corner of a table. Despite my competency in Spanish, I yelled out a clumsy and decidedly American ouch! Heads turned and my Guatemalan colleagues giggled. Rather than reacting to my misfortune, they were responding to the unavoidable shift to my native response cry. Their reaction to such an event would have been aya! One would holler oyay in Thailand, itai in Japan, hye in India and ahh in China. Although the origin of many response cries is still debated, it is clear that some of them stem from onomatopoeic expressions, ones that imitate the sounds they describe. Yuck, for example, is thought to come from the sound one makes when expelling something from the back of the throat. Surprisingly, like response cries, onomatopoeic expressions also vary from language to language. Whether in the U.S., Europe or Asia, a barking dog makes the same sound, but English speakers represent the sound with woof-woof or bark-bark. Indonesians have decided that their canines yelp gonggong, while Korean mutts say wong-wong, Portuguese pups holler ham-ham and Romanian pooches shout do-do. We humans adapt the representation of the sound to fit within the acceptable phonological patterns of our language. These sounds that accompany words in everyday conversations are a necessary component of social acceptance. In fact, people who dont use them are perceived as strange. If you dont think so, imagine life without them. Picture someone slamming a finger in the door and quietly saying that hurt, stepping on dog poo and continuing on without comment or slipping on ice without a holler. Hmmm, now wouldnt that be odd?

Madelyn S. Clayton
devoted wife, loving mother, faithful follower of Christ
Madelyn Stringfellow Clayton, a 46year Claremont resident, died on May 27, 2010 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. She was 85. Born on January 19, 1925 in Draper, Utah, Mrs. Clayton grew up under the guidance of her parents, Marvin Day and Ruth Sorensen Stringfellow, and the camaraderie of her siblings, Darrell, Dorothy, and Val. The family lived next door to Grandmother Martina Sorensen in a neighborhood filled with aunts, uncles and cousins. When Mrs. Clayton was 10, her family moved to Provo, Utah. They accepted Brigham Young University students into their home as boarders, including Stan Watts, who later became BYUs athletic director, and Wilson Sorensen, who became president of Utah Technical College. During high school and for the next several years, Mrs. Clayton worked at the local Sears store as an audit clerk, along with her sister, Dorothy, and sisterin-law, Maxine. She enjoyed her work very much and was quite good at it, the family shared. Mrs. Clayton met her future husband, James Dean Clayton, on a blind date to a 4th of July carnival. They were married on August 3, 1945 while Mr. Clayton was on leave from his navy assignment in Corpus Christi, Texas. They heard about the bombing of Hiroshima while on their honeymoon in Salt Lake City, and the war ended soon thereafter. Mrs. Clayton and her husband lived in student housing at BYU, which was actually converted army barracks. During this time, Mr. Clayton earned bachelors and masters degrees in elementary education, and Mrs. Clayton continued her work at Sears. After 8 years in Provo, they moved to Pomona where Mr. Clayton taught school and where their 3 children, James Gary, Susan Kay and Michael Dean were born. Eight years after moving to Pomona, they moved to Claremont, remaining here ever since. Mrs. Claytons family expressed that she was always a generous, helpful and supportive wife, mother and grandmother. She especially touched the lives of 2 of her grandchildren, who were blessed to be her next-door neighbors for the past 15 years. She babysat them on Friday nights when they were small and kindly gave them chores when they were older, paying them much more money than the simple jobs warranted. She supported each of her grandchildren in their college ventures and as they And her devotion to her husband has been constant. They have been a wonderful team, and even during her last weeks on earth, as both lived with health challenges, she tenderly cared for his every need, always being sure he was comfortable and cared for, the family shared. She cared intensely for each family member and many, many friends. Madelyns love and kindness knew no bounds. Mrs. Clayton is survived by her husband, Dean Clayton of Claremont; her brother, Val Stringfellow of Bountiful, Utah; her children, James Gary Clayton of Prather, Sue Zylstra and her husband Brad Zylstra of Claremont and Michael Dean Clayton and his wife Lorraine Wilson Clayton of Parker, Colorado; and by her 9 grandchildren. Mrs. Claytons family expressed that they love and miss her: We are grateful for her example, strength, diligence, and kindness. We love you, Mom! Funeral services were held on June 2, 2010, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Claremont.
have participated in full-time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Mrs. Clayton also actively participated in the LDS church, serving in many capacities including Sunday School teacher, visiting teaching coordinator and Relief Society counselor and secretary.

Timothy P. Corey
Costco service professional, fisherman, comedic family man
Timothy Corey, a childhood resident of Claremont most recently living in Meridian, Idaho, died at age 50 on May 8, 2010. Mr. Corey was born in Pomona on February 10, 1960, the youngest of 3 sons born to Donald and Dorothy Corey, formerly of Claremont. After high school, Mr. Corey moved from Claremont to Santa Barbara. He worked in restaurants and at an automotive service and repair shop in Montecito where occasionally he would chat up a celebrity customer. Later, he worked as a manufacturers representative in the medical field, covering northern California and the Pacific Northwest. In 1990, Mr. Corey married Kris Iseminger, and together they had 3 children: twin daughters, Katie and Megan, in 1991; and a son, Andrew, in 1994. When their marriage ended, Mr. Corey relocated to Idaho where he took a job at Costco in Boise. He was an admired and respected member of the Costco family, and many customers relied on him for his product knowledge and honesty. Mr. Coreys passions, hobbies and talents were broad sweeping and often quite entertaining. He enjoyed spending quality time with his children and delighted in fishing and camping with family and friends. On an Alaskan fishing trip with his brothers and father in 1988, he caught the largest salmon of anyone, by far, noted his brother John. He loved watching Formula 1 autoracing and often talked about his dream to attend one of the races in person. Another dream was purchasing a Harley Davidson motorcycle and riding across the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic. He took pleasure in collecting old bicycles and bringing them back from disrepair. Fond of many critters and the natural world, Mr. Corey loved dogs, and especially his Scruffy, and he had extensive thusiastic, gyrating, singing Elvis performance. It was not uncommon for Mr. Corey to grab a random inanimate object and transform it into something else. Pizza pans as elephant ears or satellite dishes comes to mind, said his sister-in-law, Deb Corey. It was classic side-splitting entertainment. Mr. Corey, like his mother, was also an artist. He liked to sketch caricatures of people or animals, typically adding a humorous background scene. Tim was a charming, bright, caring and loveable person. He had a quick wit and a great sense of humor, said his brother Jim. He was liked by everyone he had the pleasure of meeting. He had a wonderful way of making everyone he was with feel special. Tim is survived by his parents, Donald and Dorothy Corey of Meridian, Idaho; his brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Deb Corey of Claremont and Jim and Kim Corey of Eagle, Idaho; his children, Katie, Megan and Andrew of Vacaville; his nieces, Kristen, Erin and Heather; and his nephew, Matthew. An informal gathering of friends and family to share moments of Mr. Coreys life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010 on the British Bulldog Pub patio in Upland.

Board recognizes aspiring disc jockey, outgoing board members The CUSD Board of Education honored Claremont High School junior Lorenzo Gomez and Claremont Unified School District student board members Wesley Chang and Tyler Large. Lorenzo was presented with the districts Certificate of Excellence for his temporary work with the all-Spanish radio station KWKU 1120AM on Monday and Wednesday morning before school. His position was through the WorkAbility Grant Program that places students into employment with the employer being compensated for training. Wesley and Tyler have both served the district as student representatives on the
board for the entire school year. The CHS and San Antonio students will graduate along with the Class of 2010 on June 17th. Board receives series of program updates Claremont High Schools International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, the CUSD Elementary Instrumental Music Program and the latest statistics on district enrollment were all highlighted. Along with several students, Ms. Linda Saeta talked about the success of the IB program in its inaugural year on the CHS campus. A total of 57 full-diploma IB students are currently enrolled in the program with an expected growth to 70 students by 2012. Approximately 400 non-diploma students took IB courses this year. In order to complete the diploma program, students must study 6 subjects
within a hexagon curriculum model, complete an extended essay, follow a theory of knowledge course and perform a creative version of community service. Its been an exciting year, Ms. Saeta said. The CUSD Elementary Instrumental Music Program has enjoyed a strong year with rising participation among the students. The Elementary Band and Elementary Strings both showcased what theyve learned in culminating concerts over the past 2 weeks. CUSD instructor Brandon Johnson indicated that the success of the program at the elementary level is leading to greater participation at the junior high level. In my 2nd year at El Roble, the marching and concert bands have experienced a 40 percent growth in participation and the string orchestra has almost tripled its size, Mr. Johnson said. The preliminary numbers for next year for the
instrumental music ensembles at El Roble [Intermediate School] continue to show a positive growth trend. And I believe that this explosive growth in instrumental music participation at El Roble is directly related to the positive musical experiences that students are having at the elementary level. CUSD Executive Director of Student Services Mike Bateman reported an expected increase in overall enrollment for the 2010-11. According to his report, the district currently has 6960 students enrolled and expects the number to increase to 7045 by the fall. Mr. Bateman expects El Robles enrollment to decrease by 50 students and believes CHS could be up 60 students next year. He and his staff will also be reviewing current interdistrict transfers to determine whether they will be renewed.

Competition leads CHS student toward new career goal
laremont High School senior Anuv Ratan was certain of his career path a few months ago. But after participating in the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition in April, he decided to go in another direction.
Though Anuv finished as a regional finalist, his appreciation of epidemiology was the true prize he took away from the competition. Now he plans to pursue medicine and management when he attends Harvard University this fall. At first, I thought that I would do something in government or economics, Anuv said. But now, epidemiology is an area Im really interested in and want to pursue as a major in college. In general, I want to go to medical school and just see where it leads. Epidemiology is the study of the causes of health diseases among populations by exploring a variety of causal factors, in addition to considering the distribution and control of diseases. Anuv conducted a 5-month research project entitled An Epidemiological Analysis of Socio-Economic Geography on Depression Rates in Adolescents as part of the competition. The research examined both Pomona and Claremont to measure the effects the overall community had on the adolescents ability to be happy. When communities are safe and there are social avenues such as gyms, depression is lower, Anuv explained. Maybe in some cases, it isnt the household. By investigating schools that are located in starkly different socio-economic surroundings, I was able to conclude that the status of the surrounding city, the availability of social outlets, and the societal acceptance of substance abuse are all factors directly related to depression. One of 5 regional finalists, Anuv had to present his findings to a panel of judges comprised of leading epidemiologists and health experts in Washington D.C.. Though he did not advance to the next round, he still received a $2000 award. The YES Competition was created in 2003 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board. The mission of the competition is to challenge high school students to implement epidemiological methods to the examination of health issues.
Claremont High School Senior Anuv Ratan has had a busy year with school, extracurricular activities and competitions. Anuv was accepted to Harvard University where he will study medicine in the fall.

Teaching new generations about epidemiology has tremendous value not only for those who go on to pursue careers in public health but for all students, said College Board President Gaston Caperton. Through the study of epidemiology, students expand their understanding of scientific methods and critical thinking. Though Anuv was a national qualifier as part of the CHS Speech & Debate team, he will not compete this year due to a scheduling conflict with graduation. In his 4 years at CHS, he played on the boys tennis team for 3 years, became a member of the California Scholarship Federation and is a National Merit Scholar. He represented the United States at the 2010 World Schools Debating Championships in Qatar in February, was a national champion in the 2009 Speech & Debate National Tournament and captured the state championship in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Anuv has also been an ongoing volunteer at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center and Casa Colina. The CHS senior said living in Claremont has allowed him to develop a passion for helping others.
From Claremont, Ive learned what it means to have community spirit and hopefully I will carry it to Harvard [University], he explained. Harvard tends to be a place where people are self-sufficient and so hopefully I can apply the community spirit there.

he Claremont High School boys tennis teams goal was to capture its 2nd straight CIF Southern Section Division III crown. Mission accomplished.
Needing just 2 wins to clinch the match going into the final round, Clarke Spinosa, Spencer Ingram and the doubles units of David Standerfer/Andrew Lieu and Frank Liu/Scott Donaldson all recorded victories to power the Wolfpack to a 12-6 win over Placentia Valencia for its 2nd CIF championship in team history on Wednesday at the Claremont Club. It feels good, Spinosa said. With the win, CHS completed an undefeated season with a 19-0 overall record. The Pack has not lost a match since the finals of the Claremont Classic in March 2009. Its been a picture perfect season and this was a great way to end it, Donaldson said. Spinosa (6-4, 6-2, 6-0) and the duo of Liu/Donaldson (76, 6-4, 6-1) swept all sets they competed in on Wednesday. Liu and Donaldson defeated the Tigers No 1 unit of Kevin Paik and Brandon Chang in a pivotal 2nd round encounter, 7-6. The win was crucial for Claremont as it gave the Pack 8 points entering the final round. Theyre [Placentia Valencia] a great team and I think there was more pressure on them because they lost the championship last year so they wanted to win very badly, said CHS coach Tom Spinosa. There were a couple of things that helped us [win]. Going into the 3rd round with 8 points was key because we needed only 2 points to win.

laremonts doubles teams of Standerfer/Lieu (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Trevor James/Carter Hafif (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) recorded 2 wins apiece in Wednesdays match. Singles players Spencer Ingram (0-6, 0-6, 6-0) and Alan Leahy (0-6, 3-6, 6-2) each won one set. Leahy has been a freshman standout for the Wolfpack this season on a team layered with upperclassmen. The singles player finished as the Baseline League runner-up to Spinosa and was named to the Baseline Leagues First Team. Its been a really fun season and Ive had a great time bonding with the team, Leahy said. The other guys have treated me like family and were all pretty close. Everyone has worked hard and did a great job. Following the final match, the team gathered a large container full of ice water and chased Coach Spinosa through one of the tennis courts. The coach lasted about 2 minutes before he was finally doused by his players to celebrate the 2nd championship in the teams 43-year program. District has high hopes for enhanced salad bar
laremont Unified School District Director of Nutrition Services Rick Cota is hoping to get more Sycamore Elementary School participants in the lunch program.
An improved salad bar was on display during Wednesday nights Sycamore Courtyard Picnic, featuring several more fruits and vegetables than the original configuration with a sustainable and organic emphasis. The spread included grapes, carrots, corn, purple cabbage, oranges, 2 types of lettuce and trail mix. Eddies New York Pizzeria was also in attendance serving multigrain pasta with marinara and meat sauces. Its really important to give families incentives to use the program, Mr. Cota said. If I was here last year, I wouldnt have eaten any of the food myself. We have served 130,000 more meals than we have last year. Kids can now get a complete meal and dont have to get something thats just been thawed out. This is something we want to do with all of our elementary schools. According to Mr. Cota, Sycamore represents the lowest participation in the districts food program with only 27 percent student participation. The district average among all of the CUSD elementary schools is 65 percent. Mr. Cota hopes to increase participation district-wide through measures such as implementing box gardens on all CUSD campuses to utilize homegrown crops and purchasing fruits and vegetables from local farmers. The district is currently working with Vargas Family Strawberry Farms, Cal Poly Pomona, a local farmer in Redlands and participants in the Claremont Farmers Market. We definitely want to expand the garden program because what we grow can be put into the lunch pro-

Mr. Cota has already received positive feedback from the Sycamore community so far. On Thursday, more than 100 of Sycamores 390 students ate from the enhanced salad bar during lunchtime. The total was the highest for Sycamore in the past 4 years. Sycamore 5th grader Carly Sanden is in favor of the new salad bar due to its variety.
