USING ABSTRACT ART TO REFLECT ON SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS

THIS IS A VERY PERSONAL ACTIVITY. YOU ARE CREATING SOMETHING WHICH HAS MEANING TO YOU, BUT OTHERS WILL INTERPRET, AND SEE DIFFERENTLY.

WHAT CONCEPT ARE YOU STUDYING? DEPTH AND BREADTH; BE SPECIFIC AND FOCUS ON A BIG IDEA

GRAVITY

WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF THE CONCEPT? WHAT ARE THE KEY WORDS THAT DEFINE IT? FOCUS ON THE VERBS BRAINSTORM A LIST OF THE KEY VERBS THAT YOU ASSOCIATE WITH GRAVITY AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU CHOOSE THEM

WHAT FEELINGS DO THOSE VERBS EVOKE IN YOU?

TAKE YOUR KEY VERBS AND MAKE A CONNECTION TO A FEELING

CHOOSE AN ELEMENT OF ART; LINE, COLOR, TEXTURE, SHAPE, FORM, VALUE, SIZE

TAKE YOUR VERBS AND FEELINGS AND MERGE THEM WITH AN ELEMENT OF ART. WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE? PLAY WITH IT.

LET THE FINAL PRODUCT EMERGE OUT OF YOUR SYNTHESIZE OF IDEAS

LOOKING AT YOUR PAGE OF VERB/FEELING IMAGES AND YOUR ELEMENTS OF ART, CHOOSE THE IDEA (OR MULTIPLE IDEAS PUT TOGETHER) YOU WANT TO EXPLORE IN YOUR FINAL COPY. START PLANNING YOUR FINAL COPY.

REFLECT ON THE PROCESS

SELF-REFLECTION HOW DOES YOUR ART REFLECT YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF GRAVITY, AND WHAT DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL?

I Imagined a cloud that is blue, in space. I also imagined me oating on it. In a silent peaceful world, not being sucked by the big star. I imagined myself sleeping comfortably in the clouds and that is what I wanted to express with my art. I felt gravity pulling the cloud and me, but the cloud was made of gas and was not close to the sun. The cloud orbiting the sun slowly, and I slept on it for a long time. The cloud orbits the sun and the sun orbits the center of the galaxy and the galaxy orbits a bigger galaxy! It make me very curious and makes me feel that I am such a small person. Koichi

My abstract art represents happiness. The lines are the wind and the drops are the rain. The drops are the rain. The drops are pulled down by gravity and come and splash on the paper. The drops represent gravity to me. Gravity is pulling the wind, and the drops of rain is falling down to the ground because gravity is pulling it down. The earth goes around the sun because of gravity, and when the earth twirls around it makes weather and seasons. The different colors represent the different seasons, and how gravity makes it happen. Jiwon

My abstract art means many things to me. I think that this picture shows that gravity is different in many places. The colors are showing different planets and how much gravity they have. The different sizes have different affects on gravity. The bigger the color, the more gravity that planet has. Isha

To ME, the painting represents gravity because all the things are being sucked into a black hole, which is the dark spray paint spot on the right side. The shapes are different because gravity is different in different places. The wavy rhombuses mean I am worried because gravity can pull you so hard, it is scary and you cant control it. Emi
