! Anecdot
Beijing is one of the most remarkable
cities Ive ever been to. It is a very busy and
modern place. I love to go sightseeing there.
The Forbidden City is my preferred place to
visit in Beijing. The marvelous Forbidden City is
the largest and the greatest preserved imperial
palace complex in the world. It has 9,999
rooms you could get lost in, which explains
how the Forbidden City became one of the
main tourist attractions in Beijing. Over a
period of ve centuries, this palace operated as
the governmental center of the country. One of
the reasons why I favor the Forbidden City is
because I had a pleasant experience when I
went there. When you enter the Forbidden City
and look at the fabulous rooms, you will feel
like leaving your native city behind and
transferring to Beijing. It is easy to imagine
ones self living in luxury in one of the elegant
rooms of the palace. How pleasant would it be
to live in a palace with butlers at your service?
Unfortunately, you cant live in the Forbidden
City. It is just one enormous museum so
attractive that you are guaranteed to fall in love
with.

The Celestial City
Beijing is like the brightest star on a clear
and cloudless night, easily standing out from
the millions of others twinkling around it.
Beijing did use to be known as the The
Celestial City for its perfect blend of
infrastructure, trade, arts and culture. However,
as the star that it is, the intensity of its
brightness changes with time. Due to the
exceedingly rapid industrialization, various
negative consequences have followed. As of
the present, the city has a population of 19.6
million. They came to this city from several
different countries to add to the brilliance of
this star. Only a small number of cities in the
world have served as lengthily as the political
center of an area as immense. It is one of the
Four Great Ancient Capitals of The Peoples
Republic of China. It has also been the heart of
Chinas history for centuries and there is barely
a major building of any age in Beijing that does
not have at least some national historical
signicance. The city is also the second largest
city in China today. Can you ever even imagine
Beijing as a quiet provincial city much like a
dimly lit star? At present, no one would think to
describe it as a provincial city but Beijing was
actually a small shing province in the past.
Today, you will nd numerous attractions in
Beijing, both old and new. Visit Beijing and
explore this luminary with me!

! !

Impact of the Past on the Present
The city of Beijing, in China, has a long
and rich history that goes back over 3,000
years. Beijing for centuries was the capital of
the ancient states of Ji and Yan before the
fusion of China in 221 BC by their First
Emperor Qin Shi Huang. For the rst millennia
of imperial rule, Beijing was only a provincial
city in northern China. Its stature grew most
from the 10th to the 13th centuries when the
nomadic Khitan and Jurchen peoples from the
steppes expanded southward, and made the
city a capital of the Liao and Jin dynasties.
In the early 1900s, Beijing used to be a
city with a mixed form of government:
nationalism and communism. Everything
changed after Mao became the Chinese
communist leader and founded the Peoples
Republic of China. Mao Ze Dong, Chinas most
dominant communist leader, had chased out
the Japanese and other possible threats to
Chinas future. He was responsible for the
disastrous policies of the Great Leap
Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
The Great Leap Forward of the People's
Republic of China was an economic and
social campaign, reected in the decision of
plans from 1958 to 1961. It intended to use
China's massive population to rapidly
transform the country from agricultural
economy to a communist state through the
course of swift industrialization, and
collectivization. Mao Ze Dong led the
movement and strengthens it after being
informed of the impending disaster from grain
shortages. However, The Great Leap policy
ended in calamity, resulting in excess deaths
to the millions leading Mao to initiate another
policy called the Cultural Revolution in 1966.
The Cultural Revolution was a
sociopolitical movement that occurred from
1966 to the year 1976. The goal was to
strengthen socialism in China by removing
capitalist, traditional and cultural elements
from Chinese society, and imposing Maos
grand plans for it. This revolution stilled the
country and strongly affected it both
economically and socially. It resulted in
widespread dividing struggles in all walks of
life. After Mao's death in 1976, reformers led
by Deng Xiaoping gained prominence. Most of
the Maoist reforms associated with the Cultural
Revolution were abandoned by 1978. The
Cultural Revolution has been ofcially viewed
as an infamous phenomenon ever since.
!
It would be very difcult to nd a culture
that has experienced as much culture shock in
60 years as has China. However, it has already
overcome most of the shock and the results
have been surprisingly positive. China has now
become the world's fastest-growing major
economy. As of 2012, it is the world's second-
largest economy, after the United States, by
both minimal GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
and purchasing power. Also, China is the
world's largest exporter and second-largest
importer of goods. China is a recognized
nuclear weapons state and has the world's
largest standing army with everything centered
in Beijing. For much of China's population,
living standards have seen extremely large
improvements, and freedom continues to
expand, but political controls remain tight and
rural areas are still poor.
Population Demographics
Beijing started developing 700,000 years
ago. Famous for being where the Peking man
lived in the beginning, it started to gain notice
during the Shang Dynasty when it was chosen
as its capital city. It is located in Northeast
China, bordered by the Yellow Sea. Due to its
accessible location, it slowly became an
outstanding trading center of China.
Beijing became a city 3,000 years ago
(2012 is the 3057th year of Beijing). It was
favored by the Liao, Jin Yuan, Ming and Qing
Dynasties of the past and is still continually
being developed today. In the past, people
came to Beijing mainly because of trading.
Today, people mostly pass through Beijing
because it has become a major transportation
hub with Chinas railway network and its main
roads leading to all parts of China.
There are now many different religions in
this city. The main religions are Buddhism,
Taoism, and Confucianism. However, Taoism is
the only religion native to Beijing.
Beijing is presently also the political,
educational and cultural center of The Peoples
Republic of China. Though these are not the
only reasons, people also go to Beijing
because of work and business opportunities.
The population there at present is
approximately, 19.6 million with the major
nationalities represented being Han Chinese.
Manchu, Hui, Mongol and South Koreans are
the minorities in the city. Today, major
industries and businesses in Beijing include the
nance and automobile industries, with these
two currently being its most important.
Today people are said to choose to live in
Beijing mainly because of educational and
business opportunities. There, they can
choose to live very cheaply and get a rich
cultural experience on extremely little money
(5000yuan). Currently, Beijing is a multinational
city, as well as a major city of many different
business opportunities open for all.
[3]
Beijings Environment
Beijing started out as a quiet provincial
city in Northern China. Industrialization began
in the 1950s lasting until around the mid to late
1970s. American companies then began
pouring into the city because of the abundance
of cheap labor and the careless environmental
laws.
Today, Beijing holds no resemblance to its
quiet past. No one would ever think to
describe it as a provincial city. It continues to
grow as the center of China. However, due to
the exceedingly rapid industrialization, various
negative consequences have come up. First,
the land area of dry desert is increasing. It is
eating up usable and productive land. Next, air
pollution has become a major problem. The
presence of numerous factories and an
increasing population are causing much harm.
Lastly, the increase of both surface and ocean
temperatures have increased the occurrence of
climate-related disasters such as droughts and
oods. These are current problems nonexistent
in early Beijing. Although it is popularly known
as the major city of business today, its
environment is also continuing to change
negatively as the city is developing.

Life in Seoul
All of North Korea is a jail one wise man said
and that noble man was named Kim Y. Sam. The
capital city of South Korea, Seoul, became more
popular and so the government of South Korea
improved Seoul with new landmarks, unlike
North Korea, a miserable and cruel part of Korea.
20% of South Korea belongs to Seoul, 9,895,000
out of 48,754,657. They came to Seoul from North
Korea because they were terried.
Many Koreans thought they could use
the land to start a new building and
take advantage of it. Eventually they
did take advantage of it with new
structures and houses. Seoul is a
strong place like Chuck Norris that
traps you and never ever lets you go.

Anecdote
At Seoul there is a wonderful place called
Everland; where animals scratch and can be seen
outside your bus window. Everland is the major
theme park in South Korea. Eveland includes tons
of different rides, facilities, and has three distinct
themes: Festival World, Caribbean Bay, and Speed
Way. Caribbean Bay is a water park with water
slides and swimming pools with articial waves
they are just like normal waves that you can nd in
beaches. In an addition, it has a safari zoo, where
you can observe animals in their habitats in a
caged bus like when animals are caged but this
time you are and they are at their homes. Snow
sleds are also added in Everland with two
mountains to entertain families during
the winter. By the time you
leave you would
probably

your children.
Impact of the Past on the Present
Seoul was not the capital of South Korea because there was no South Korea or North Korea; it was a single country, so
Seoul wasnt as popular or advance today because it as not the capital; but with a threat from North Korea, many are
feared to go near it, because they may assault again. Seoul, before the Korean War was developing city, its still is, but
with more wonderful and ancient things.

Then everything changed when the Korean War started. China helped North Korea and the U.S. helped South Korea. It
started when China became communist, and the U.S. feared that communism would spread or start a domino effect.
North Korea wanted to be communist but South Korea wanted to be a democracy, creating enmity (a feeling of hostile
or killing each other).
The U.S. wanted to split Korea: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea disagreed but South Korea agreed so North
Korea took the rst attack with a nuclear bomb, because they wanted Korea to be communist. Then the Korean War
started, so after a long battle during the Cold War (1945-1991) they divided Korea, thus North Korea and South Korea
were born.
As a result, the capital city of South Korea is now Seoul, a beautiful city with worthy landmarks unlike North Korea, a
sad and cruel part of Korea. Families and relative were divided when they divided Korea. China and America has a
strong feeling of enmity. Many landmarks were destroyed but were recovered after a while. A nuclear owned by North
Korea threats U.S and South Korea. North Korea and South Korea remain even more rivals, and many fear to go
anywhere near North Korea. When the capital of South Korea, Seoul, it became more popular and so the Government of
South Korea improved Seoul with new landmarks, currency, new laws, cleaner property, new transportation, and more!

Population
The capital of South Korea, Seoul was founded in 1394 by Gen, Yi Song-gye the founder of
Choson Dynasty. It was located at East Asia, in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula near
the Yellow River. This location helped Seoul for importing, water, and trading with other
cities/countries.
In the past, people came to Seoul because
there was more land and other natural
resources like water, oil, and coal. Today
many people would like to come to Seoul
to nd job offers like teachers, as a
secretary and vice president of a fashion
company (if you have what it takes);
resources like coal and lead for further
purposes, and nally men must server at
least two years in the military which
makes it safer for anyone who comes
when/if there is a War.
20% of South Korea belongs to Seoul,
9,895,000 out of 48,754,657. People who
live in Seoul are 26.3% Christian, 23.2% Buddhist, 1.3% other, and 49.3% none. Age
structure; under 19 26.4%, 20-50 64.7%, 60+ 8.9%.Languages: Korean and English. There is
only one major nationality in Seoul, which is Korean. The major industries and businesses are
Ace chemical, Asiana Airlines, BC cards, Daelim, other which makes electronics,
telecommunications, automobile, chemicals, ship building, etc.
Today people choose to live in Seoul due to safety, job offers, resources, easy trade, faster
transport, and because they had to get more advance because there are more people in the city.
Houses are huger than you think with an affordable price! Spas with nest back massage and
relaxation; restaurant with the best food you like, and a lot of famous singers/actors/models
are there like Ji-hyun and John Cho. Therefore Seoul is now one of the nest cities in the
country/world, making it a world attraction with its landmarks and its beautiful cravings in
and out of the landmark, like the Pongdaemun Gate.

Environment
! After the Korean War, the
people in Seoul had to adapt and
change to their new landscape to
survive or to x the landscape but
in some times they could not.
Many Koreans thought they could
use the land to start a new
buildings and take advantage of
it. Seoul before was a bunch of
old building, now Seoul has tall
building and skyscrapers.
The landscape in Seoul was
changed by the Korean War
between 1950-1953, when North
Korea bombed South Korea; their
rst objective was to bomb Seoul.
When tall buildings (that where
barely made) where hit, chunks of
the building collapsed and the
building would fall and create
craters.
Seouls mountains are
smaller thanks to the bombs. The
percent of air and water pollution
increased with nuclear bomb and
debris all over. Also during the
Korean War the government
intended to spend 1.1 million for
safety reasons like weapons, etc;
which creates air pollution, which
relates to the Story of Stuff. This
all happened because of the
Korean War. Today Seoul is now
lled with giant buildings as far
as you can see, with the
mountains still shorter. Old and
revived buildings are now
monuments.

to Sydney's
landscape
Sydney used to be populated by
Aborigines who are Australian
natives. But then the Europeans
arrived in 1788. Their rst plan was
to make a convict settlement, which
was founded by Arthur Philip.
Between 1830-1840 urban
development started. Scottish
ofcer Lachlan Macquarie helped
out adding schools, hospitals, banks,
etc. Lachlan was becoming Sydneys
ofcial architect.
! In 1932, during the
Depression era, the Harbor bridge
by Jack Lang. This was during the
Depression time, which was an
economic condition where people
have very low nancial
opportunities. The construction of
this has provided employment to
workers so it was nickname Iron
Lung. In1942, WW2 affecting
Sydney, Japanese forces repeatedly
bombed Sydney Harbor, and a few
of the eastern suburbs were
destroyed, and the Japanese were
also able to sink one ferry.
Thankfully the Harbor Bridges life
was spared, it only suffered minimal
damages. The city then was able to
rebuild itself towards the end of
WW2.Though the Sydneys
experience with WW2 remains a
haunting past. Today the Sydney
Harbor Bridge is a historical
landmark in the city. Thanks to
Macquarie, Jack Lang and other
great contributors to Sydney. This
place is now the wealthiest city in
Australia all because of its past.

Impact to past and present
Discover the citys Big bang. From a place urban place populated by our
ancestors, and to being one of the greatest multicultural societies in the world.
Sydney used to be a
place with natives
called Aborigines.
There was an
estimated 4,000 to
8,000 Aborigines who
lived in Sydney. James
Cook a captain sailor
rst discovered them in
1788. The Aborigines
spoke three languages
Dharawal, Darug and
Guringai. Each
Aborigine clan had
their own territories
and their own
resources. Though that
all changed when the
Europeans arrived.
! Europeans
arrived at Jan 26, 1788
their plan for Sydney
was a convict
settlement, and
founded by Arthur
Philip. Also Captain
James Cook made
contact with Aborigine
community called
Gweagal. Europeans
found Sydney cove
and made a colony
there founded by
Arthur Philip. Then
Arthur Philip named
the colony after the
British Home Secretary
Thomas Sydney. And
that is how Sydney got
its name. Today the
Aborigines population
decreased, and
roughly 1000
Aborigines died of the
smallpox back in
1789.The Europeans
also educated
Aborigines Christian
religion, and they did
this by removing them
from their clans.
Sydneys wealth
started when people
found large amounts of
gold and then they
were able to build a
much more richer
society. Without the
discovery gold, Sydney
would not have been
as wealthy and both
attractive as it is today.
" Now, Sydney
then became one of
the most successful
multicultural societies
in the world. It is
multicultural because
Sydney is lled with
English, Scottish, Irish,
and Chinese
immigrants. It has
many immigrants
because of vast wealth
and many businesses
to employ people.
Such jobs are in
manufacturing
companies, health and
community services
like doctors and
nurses, teachers,
bankers, etc. Today,
Sydney is such a
beautiful place with
countless attractions
like the Harbor Bridge,
Opera House, and the
Sydney sh market.
Surely Sydney is a city
not to miss!!
Anecdote
Sydney is one of the most amazing cities I have ever been to.
When I saw the reworks in New Years Eve I saw a real
display!! The re works ew out from the Sydney Harbor
Bridge. And when you look up to sky you would mostly see
sparkles of different colors. Each rework unleashed screams
of awe by the people all around Sydney. Spending New
Years Eve in Sydney was one of the best choices I have ever
made. The cities New Years Eve are fantastic and all, but
Sydneys beach is a competitive match. My most favorite
beach is Bondi Beach it is very sunny and you could easily
feel the soft sand on your feet. The beach is very clear and
clean, and every time I see its beach I would always have a
strong urge to jump in. I have also loved Sydney
architecture. Its designs are mostly colorful and modern, and
they also stand out in many different ways. I wish I had a
house with talented designs of Sydneys architecture. In
conclusion theyre many amazing things in Sydney
sometimes I wonder what good it doesnt do. If I could
describe Sydney Id say it is a remake of a sunny heaven.

My Day at Chadstone
Shopping Center
Melbourne Australia is a great city to go
to especially because of their big
shopping centers, fantastic landmarks to
see and visit. There are heaps of
shopping centers but in my opinion the
best is chadstone shopping center it has
great shops within l ike Marks &
Spencers, Target, Pumpkin Patch and
Lots of food stores.
I always walk around chadstone and
think Im in heaven I remember once
when I was there I was walking around
and saw a really nice T-shirt in the
window so I went in and bought it. Then
I felt a bit hungry so I went to the food
court and got a hot dog at donut king, I
also had a donut that looked like a little
girl it was very funny. After, when I was
nished shopping I went home with a
great big smile on my face making me
think I was going again.
The city of Melbourne, Australia
used to be an undiscovered part of
southeast Australia. An Aboriginal clan,
called the Kulins. Had lived there for over
30,000 years. The Kulins found this was a
great meeting point and a great source of
food and water. It was not until 1801 it
was discovered by a man sailing from New
South Wales named James Grant, when
he entered Port Philip bay.
Then everything changed when a
man called John Batman from Tasmania
went to the same area in southeast
Australia to do some grazing in 1835. He
made an agreement with the Aborigines
to rent a large area of land for grazing, in
return for food, our, blankets and clothes.
This area was to later become the
founding site of Melbourne. In 1836 the
rst government block was built and was
declared the capital of the Port Philip
district. In 1838 Melbourne was declared
a legal port and administration center and
this greatly increased the number of
people moving there. The government of
New South Wales said that John Batman
could not rent the land from the
Aboriginals, as it was the property of the
Crown of the Commonwealth. They
cancelled the rent agreement between
John Batman and the aboriginals, but let
the white settlers stay there in their new
town.

Melbourne a city in 25 June 1847, it was
the beginning of Melbourne becoming
the largest city in Australia, and the
temporary capital city. Many years later
the capital city was transferred to
Canberra in New South Wales. As
Melbourne expanded, the aboriginals
were forced further off their land, losing
their normal way of life. At one point of
time Melbourne was the second largest
city in the world, behind London,
England. Melbourne had a gold rush from
1850 to the 1870s, which helped it to
grow at a fast rate and to make the people
wealthier.

Before the big city of Melbourne
was formed, it was just bush land. But in
a period of just over two hundred years it
has grown with many buildings, roads
and bridges being built. More people
arrived as the city grew, and their way of
living grew with the changes that were
getting made. People from overseas
moved to Melbourne and gave it a
multicultural mix.
Melbourne before the 1880s was
different because there were not many
buildings and not enough work for
people. The area of Melbourne around
the port had a lot of vacant land and the
buildings were in poor condition. Picture
1 shows the area around Melbourne Port
in 1880. There were no bridges, few
roads and a lot of smoke from factories.
The landscape changed, as bridges
and high-rise buildings were built to form
more ofces and homes. These changes
occurred around the 1880s and became
the start of Melbourne becoming a large
international city.
How is Melbourne different today?
Well there are more buildings, many
more roads, large bridges linking the
different sides of the port and a big
entertainment area located around the
doc k ar e a. The f ac t or i e s have
disappeared and been replaced by
houses. There are more living spaces and
more places for people to work as
buildings are becoming larger. There is
also more transport being used like trams,
buses and cars.
The most informative thing I learnt
was that lots of buildings have been
renovated over the years, and that
buildings are no longer getting built in
the one place. Instead, they are spreading
out all over the city and into surrounding
suburbs and new housing developments.
As a result of all the people moving to
Melbourne from overseas, different
suburbs have developed a unique culture.

Hey, are you up for some adventure in Ho Chi Minh
City? Well I went there last weekend, and let me
tell you it was a blast of metaphoric air! One of
the best places in my opinion are the C Chi

were also used as supply routes. The military
troops sometimes had to stay in the tunnels for a
massive amount of time; they might even have had
to live there!

Environment
In the 15th century,
most of Saigon was
swamps, marshes, and
thick forests. People
reclaimed the land for
agricultural purposes.
The French came and
tried to turn Saigon into
the Pearl of the Far
East. The French built
western style buildings
and French villas. In the
midst of the war Saigon
was bombed. Even today
they have wide
boulevards and French
architecture. For the last
10 years they are
developing new urban
centers. They needed
farmland to grow food
and later space for the
growing population. It
didnt have much land. In
the early 1700s they
reclaimed agricultural
land. The affect is that
they gained more land
rst for agriculture then
for the city.

The Hong Kong Flag
A STORY OF HONG KONG + TOP 10 ATTRACTIONS
It was just another day for me, as a Hong Kong citizen. I thrown my wet overcoat sprinkled with thousands of drops of rain
onto the chair and started typing furiously on the keyboard as if playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the piano. I sipped my
coffee in the middle of a business email report for my ever-demanding and ill-tempered boss. Searching through the sea
of papers, I nally accomplished my objective. I reached my hand into that enormous growing mound of papers. It was
10:25 p.m. The clocks rhythmic ticking made me think I was trying to deactivate dynamite that was going to crash my
career otherwise. Tick, tock, tick, tock it went. The frantic clattering of a keyboard accompanied the time bomb. The due
was only a few hours away and so was a nerve-racking telephone call from my anxious boss asking if I nished my work.
Once the clock hits 12:00 am. and Im still typing erratically, I m dead. Maintaining Hong Kongs number one harbor,
Victoria Harbor, is hard work. Most of the employees work until 2 a.m. Then they would amble out of the skyscraper onto
the road with with their dark brown suitcases, sleepy eyes and coffee. My ngers complained as I typed each word and
my brain refused the zigzagging charts and countless numbers. It was the way in Hong Kong. People had things to do as
always. Day and night, cars zoom across roads, subway trains dash on rails, and planes slice through the clouds. 11:50
pm. The clocks ticks were urgent. Tick, tock, tick tock. My eyes strained, looking at the charts and emails. 12:00 a.m.
now. I nally nished my last word and clicked the send button. Riiinnnnggg! The telephone rang. I picked it up.
Employee, did you send me the email yet? Yes sir. My voice quivered. Whats the matter, eh? You get a promotion!
Then he hung up the phone.
" I chuckled as I placed the telephone on the table, back to where it belonged. Hong Kong is always promising and
with wonderful opportunities everywhere. This graceful city is a extravagance of opportunities, where even the solemn
orphans may become a businessman in a glorious skyscraper. And so, I walked home, carrying a suitcase in one hand
and a umbrella in the other.
This
is Hong Kong, a
city that never
sleeps.
1. Victoria Harbor:
Victoria Harbor is one of the worlds busiest harbors. Ships rush to and fro, and the cranes never rest. Also, at precisely 8
pm, the A Symphony of Lights light show begins. Tourists may take a ride on the iconic Star Ferry that sails around the lights
show, which involves buildings near Victoria Harbor. Beautiful scenery, Id say. The marvelous experience cannot be
described. Different-colored lights shoot up into the sky and sway left and right, front and back. The hidden beauty of Hong
Kong is thus revealed to the naked eye.A Star Ferry sits by Hong Kong as the lights illuminate the city and dramatically
impact the tourists mind.
2. The Peak:
The Peak is superior. It leads the tourism industries and attractions, which follow it humbly and eagerly. You must take
the local tram to The Peak After the tram ride, you will step onto a viewing platform, where a miraculous view of Hong Kong
would be discovered.

Top 10 Tourist Attractions
Hong Kong used to be a small group of solitary and depressed shing villages of the Qing Dynasty (1635-1911) in China.
The former Hong Kong was a place where shermen cast their nets and menacing pirates robbed the innocent. It was a
colony of Britain from 1842 to 1997 and returned to China on July 1, 1997 as a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The
marvelous Hong Kong today truly witnessed drastic changes in its history.
! Before 1842, Hong Kong was little more than a backwater of around 20 villages and slums when the British East
India Company sent its rst ship to Hong Kong in 1685 as an attempt to begin trade with China. The attempt was
successful, but Britain was in short supply of items China would be interested in to trade, so, the British traded opium, a
type of illegal drug, for the precious silver of the Chinese. When the Qing Dynasty government realized that its people
were getting addicted to opium and the humongous supply of silver China had was rapidly vanishing, the Qing Dynasty
stopped all trade with Britain. The British then declared war on China as a response to the trade embargo. This war was
called the Opium War (1839-1842). The Chinese lost the war, and was forced to hand over Hong Kong to the British for
99 years.
! During the British colonization, Hong Kong grew into a major free port of trade and its economy grew too. It
gained importance, for it was a huge trading center between mainland China and Europe. In the early 1980s, Chinese
government requested the British to return Hong Kong to China. Negotiations about Hong Kongs future between the two
countries lasted for almost 15 years. Den Xiaoping, a skilled Chinese leader guided the Chinese side in the negotiations.
Finally, the negotiations concluded and the British agreed to hand over Hong Kong to China. The British ag lowered as
the Chinese ag rose in Hong Kong on July 1, 1997. After the reunion with China, Hong Kong maintains its capitalist
status while mainland China is socialist. This is called One Country, Two Systems.
! Hong Kong was dramatically changed by its history. Many Europeans migrated to Hong Kong with their cultures
during the British colonization period of Hong Kong. After World War II, the city welcomed a huge amount of mainland
Chinese along with the ambulant supply of labor from the Chinese migrants. With the unmatchable labor, Hong Kong
started to invest more money in its infrastructure and business. During and after the British rule, companies and banks
moved into Hong Kong and strived the local economy and international trade. Lastly, the British and Chinese
governments cooperated well mostly in the negotiations in the late 1990s generally.
! As a result, the city of Hong Kong is now a, or possibly the regional and global trade center of China. The 2012
Hong Kong is now the topnotch city where skyscrapers rocket to the stars and a major nancial center where banks ood
the streets, cherishing millions and billions of dollars in its vaults. Business in Hong
! Kong strives in an outstanding environment, which is supported mainly by Hong Kongs fair and good rule of law.
The citys economy has been rapidly booming too. The GDP in 2010 reached $225 billion (dollars) with a per capita of
$45,900 (dollars). Lastly, Hong Kong enjoys a wide range of cultural diversity.
HONG KONG HISTORY. THE WORK OF A NATION.
Hong Kong Today. Thanks to its History.
THE POPULATION OF HONG KONG
Before 1842, Hong Kong was nothing more than a gloomy shing village. People would rarely go to Hong Kong, for it
was small and dangerous. The handful of people that went to Hong Kong would either sh or rob and raid the other
shermen. The villagers back then did not realize the value of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is near Indonesia, the
Philippines, and a collection of other islands, meaning that trade could begin easily with other countries. China could
trade their gold and silver for spices and other exotic items found in tropical areas. Join me, and lets explore the
population-related information about Hong Kong, a city located at 22 degrees North and 114 degrees East.
" Hong Kong has guided its citizens to success in the world of business with marvelous job opportunities.
Education is a valued job in the society for those willing to pass on their knowledge for the success of future
generations. Since Hong Kong depends on its tourism industry as a major source of income, lots of Hong Kong
citizens are eager to welcome foreigners to the wonderful Hong Kong as their jobs. The urbanized Hong Kong is to be
much thanked for the construction eld of job opportunities and the enthusiastic workers and architecture specialists.
Exporting and importing is, undoubtedly, the greatest and most skillfully managed job for businessmen,
businesswomen, and workers. It is this job, so professional and natural to Hong Kong citizens, that has made Hong
Kong Asias World City, Hong Kongs motto, and poured money into the GDP sack. Manufacturing is also one of
the most inuential and attractive jobs for young people. Without rapid manufacturing of products, how may Hong Kong
establish its advanced trading in the depth of the busy harbors? The governmental organizations may attract the more
people to help the country. These governmental and political jobs are fantastic, but they are also the most stressful and
demanding job opportunities Hong Kong has in store.
" Although Hong Kong does not hold much resources, the citys geography represents a powerful resource.
Hong Kong is surrounded by extremely deep water. Thus, this creates a natural structure for harbors, which Hong
Kong is dependent on primarily. Hong Kong has also established successful multinational companies, like China
Solutions.
" China Solutions is a company introducing and aiding foreign companies that have established a branch of
business in Hong Kong. The company educates other companies about Hong Kongs business basics and patterns,
stock market status, environment, and local interests. China Solutions has also established branch companies in other
part of Asia and some parts of North America, which has made it a multi-national company.
" Business and job opportunities are important reasons why people come to Hong Kong. But most businessmen
and women rush to Hong Kong to scufe about the complex business plans, and back to their own countries the next
day. Most people that have migrated to Hong Kong to live there are attracted not only by the business opportunities,
but also by the free business environment. Since the city is a SAR (Special Administrative Region), it enjoys a high
degree of autonomy and economic freedom. Families from mainland China may migrate to Hong Kong to pursue their
goals and, at the same time, serve their country rightfully.
" Also, people in Hong Kong can also enjoy wonderful views from skyscrapers, like sunsets, busy harbors, and
green mountains. Safety is another major reason why people would settle their families in Hong Kong. Being one of the
top 5 safest big cities in the world, Hong Kong only experiences minor drug issues, and this problem is being resolved
by the police.
" Hong Kongs transportation system is among the worlds most advanced. The constant stream of cars under
the night sky is a symbol of Hong Kongs great transportation. A well-organized army of taxis provide convenience and
services to passengers. Planes zip overhead, and ships propel themselves through the blue ocean. Hong Kongs
advanced lming has made it a movie city like Hollywood. Many people may admire the city for that and would love a
movie as a relief from the days work. Last but not the least, Hong Kong is a clean and well-maintained city.
" As a result, the city of Hong Kong is home to 7,722,508 citizens as of July 2011. 95% of Hong Kongs
population are hard-working Chinese building the city. 1.6% are Filipinos. 1.3% are Indonesians. 2.1% are from other
countries including USA, Canada, Japan.
These foreigners have come to Hong Kong for various reasons, but they all work hard for a common cause of making
Hong Kong an even better place.
" Many religions co-exist in Hong Kong. 66.13% of Hong Kong citizens are Buddhists. 22.05% are believers of
their own consciences and are non-religious. 10.05% are Christian. 1.5% are Muslim, and 0.25% are Hindu. Hong
Kong also hosts a variety of languages. In Hong Kong, 90.8% of the people speak Cantonese, a Chinese dialect, but
only 0.9% is able to speak Mandarin. 5.5% speak other languages from foreign nations. Behold, Hong Kong, a realm
of success and glory.
Hong Kongs original landscape was never drastically changed before 1842. Small clearing were made
only where the few shing villages are located. Natures mountains and hills in Hong Kong prevailed
despite the iron mining industry, which was poorly maintained. Small shing boats oated on the sea.
Fishing was the only source of income that beneted Hong Kong. There were also small amounts of iron
in the depth of the mountains. The mining was not a full scale resource extraction, it was a small-scale
one. After the British colonization of Hong Kong in 1842, the foreigners adapted to the environment
because of the useful geography. The sea surrounding Hong Kong was deep. The British discovered that
this geography of Hong Kong was extremely good for harbors and made lots of them.
" When the British colonized Hong Kong, they started heavy construction as their rst major attempt
to develop Hong Kong. The original villages collapsed and gave way to large European style buildings.
The British government hurried the construction of Hong Kong until when no space is left for any further
urbanization. And thus, the destruction of mountains began. Dynamite shook the landscape. The
mountains were attened. Another major construction project started to make Hong Kong even bigger and
more luxurious. Huge harbors were built for trade. The undeveloped primitive houses were turned into
grand apartments of luxury. When development space nally ran out, reclaimed land was the solution. The
British made land and hurried off erratically into the construction battleeld once again. From 1842-1940,
this development took place. Luckily, World War II did not ruin the city completely, but life standards for the
citizens were spoiling. After World War II, the city was rebuilt. More complicated skyscrapers were built
from 1945-1997. The British had launched its third major construction of the city. Hong Kong grew rapidly.
The people were proud, the government was proud, the city was proud. After the British colonization end
in 1997, Hong Kong continued to develop rapidly in the hands of the Chinese. The inexhaustible supply of
labor from China was a key reason of Hong Kongs success. More shining skyscrapers were built after
1997. The harbors were modern. Victoria Harbor is one of the most beautiful harbors today. It had the
deepest water in Hong Kong and was humongous. The harbor was so inuential that it became a tourist
attraction too. Reclaimed land is popular in Hong Kong today as a solution to minimal land. Many
homeless and poor people were given opportunities to move into skyscrapers. Poverty in Hong Kong was
weakening. More and more slums turned into urbanized areas. Development in Hong Kong continues
consistently. Hong Kong has a bright future ahead.

Environment
These pictures show how
people made a big changed in
landscape and environment of
Islamabad in the past decades.
BEFORE - Islamabads natural
environment was preserved. It
was one of the earliest
settlements for human in Asia.
There were lots of gardens, no
roads and no lights. It was just a
plain land area with a population
of 100,000. But the location of
this place is almost at the centre
of Pakistan. In 1960, they started
the construction of this city as it
replaces Karachi as the capital of
the country.
They were renovated the
Parliament House. They did this
on the orders of the Speaker and
Prime Minister. They started
building monuments and road
construction for better access to
the place. They divided it into
different sector and zone.
AFTER - The city is now home

city is very accessible to all
parts of Pakistan, so it was
decided to make this city as
Pakistans capital instead of
Karachi. It is located in the
Pothohar Plateau in the
northern part of Pakistan, at
the edge of the Himalayas.
An estimated number of
1251905 people live in this
city. The ethnic groups are
Pashtun 15.42%, Sindhi
14.1, Sariaki 8.38%,
Muhajirs 7.56%, Balochi
3.57%, Puntajabubi 44.68%,
others 6.28%. Urdu is their

religions are 95% Muslim
and 5% are Christian.
In 2011 the population
increased to 1.7 million, and
this is mainly because
people are transferring to
this city looking for better

of job opportunities in this

events like social, diplomatic
and summits are held in this
city.
Persuasive Piece
Did you know that Islamabad is
called the city of peace? This city was
surrounded by lush greens, clean water
and pollution free with only few people
living in it. The construction of this city
started 1960, as it replaced Karachi,
which was until that time the capital of
the country. There is still a lot of
greenery, but the economic growth is
much visible now. Islamabad had
developed a lot of shopping malls, nice
hotels, architectural mosque and
government ofces. This place is a very
big tourist attraction. Come and see the
beauty of Islamabad!

[3]
Past to present
Islamabad was not the first capital
city of Pakistan. It is located north
west of Lahore and west of
Afghani st an. Thi s ci t y was
pollution free with only few
people living in it and surrounded
by lush greens, had clean water
and. It became capital of Pakistan
in 1960.
In 1947, the first capital city of
independent country was Karachi.
Karachi is located at the end of the
country and this makes it more
vulnerable for attacks from the
Arabian Sea. Then in 1960 the
president Ayub Khan decided that
the capital will be moved to newly
build city, Islamabad, because it is
located in the centre of the
Pakistan and it is more accessible
from all parts of the country
compared to Karachi, and it was
closer to the army. In 1960 the
development and construction of
the city started. There were new
roads, buildings, monuments and
government offices added to the
city. Some of the most popular
places in Islamabad are Faisal
Mosque, Serena Hotel, parliament
house and Pakistan Monument.
The modern Islamabad now
provides more job opportunities to
p e o p l e . Mo r e b u s i n e s s
establishments are seen in the city.
The city also hosted several large
events for the Asian region, like
the south Asian Association for
Regional Cooperation summit and
Sports activities, like 2004 South
Asian games, which was held in
Jinnah Sports Stadium.

THE CITY OF DREAMS

Dubai
Dubai is a modern
desert in the heart of the
UAE. Its population was
small before they found
oil but expanded in
great numbers when
they did. Dubai had
1,204,000 as of 2005.
Dubai was growing in
such vast majorities that
their city wasnt big
enough for houses, so
that is way Dubai has
many apartments and
almost no houses in the
central area of the city.
Even though Dubai is
known for having a lot
of wild architectural
plans, most of them
were shut down because
of the economic crisis
that hit them. Now
Dubai is recovering
from the economic crisis
by building the worlds
tallest man made
structure named the
Burj Khalifa (formally
known as the Burj
Dubai). Even though
[2]
Impact of the Past on the
Present
By: Andres
Dubai was a very remote city
with very few resources. The
city, not only did it have limited
resources, it was basically old
ruins and desert. Since the
desert climate was harsh the
population was very low. Dubai
was known only for gold mining,
shing and as a pearling center.
Dubai did not make a lot of
money and depended a lot on
its neighbor Abu Dhabi.
Suddenly, everything
changed. In 1966 oil was found
in vast quantities and many
countries wanted that oil. At
rst, Dubai traded only with
members of the UAE, but in late
1969 Dubais Sheik HH
Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum decided it would be
better for the country to trade
with the rest of the world. As the
oil sales grew, so did Dubai. The
economy grew in an
unbelievably fast pace.
Eventually, the prince
realized that their oil was going
to run out sooner or later and
they would get in trouble, so he
decided that the country had to
grow in other ways. Buildings
were built and the city expanded
drastically. By 2004, Dubais
construction industry was
booming and the economy kept
expanding. Oil has made what
Dubai is today: A modern,
vibrant, and extraordinary city.
ANECDOTE

Anecdote
Being on the top of the
Burj Khalifa might be the
closest Ive been to
heaven. The tower was like
a modern looking Mount
Everest. I could reach the
clouds! The Burj Khalifa
is incredibly high rising
at 829.84 m! It also
serves as a restaurant,
and a hotel. The food
there was a mix of modern
Dubai food and classic
Middle Eastern food; it
was so yummy! I did feel a
bit scared when I got to
the observation deck
because if you look down,
you get extremely dizzy.
The elevators were made to
go really fast and it only
takes a few seconds to get
to the top floor (it
actually broke a record).
The Burj Khalifa set a
record when in New Years
Eve because it had the
worlds highest display of
fireworks. The fireworks
jumped out of the tower
and burst into explosions
of color! The outside
Observation deck made me
see the beautiful city of
Dubai; with buildings
popping out of every nook
and cranny of the city.
Then after that I went
over too the swimming pool
(on the 76th floor!) and
went for a swim. On a cold
day the water is cold but
it was a bright sunny day
when I went there. Since
it is very expensive to
stay in the Burj Khalifa;
I had to leave but I hope
that I will be able to go
again.
Dubai in 1990
Dubai in 2005
[3]
Population of Dubai
Dubai was found in June 9th 1883 by
Hamadan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, Dubai was only involved with
fellow UAE members until the British
came and conquered the city; this had
benets and downsides, the British
taught them English, but also took control
of their trade until December 2, 1971 with
a peace treaty. In the 18th century many
people came to Dubai for trade since it is
located in the Middle East. The Middle
East was where everyone wanted to go to
because of the large amount of gold and
other stuff such as spices, gems/jewels,
etc. that couldnt be found in Europe.
Today, Dubais economy is huge and still
is expanding due to the oil discovery in
1966. Dubai offers a lot of employment in
many different areas of work.
Construction and architecture are
probably the most common company
structures but also there are many oil
companies like Chevron, ADNOC,
Anadarko, and ENOC. There are also
many beautiful sights in Dubai that will
take your breath away like: Burj Khalifa,
Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, and the
desert areas. Due to the oil discovery the
population is booming at 1,442,000
compared to 58,000 in 1968. Now that
the trade is huge and many countries
want to go there are a lot of nationalities
represented in Dubai for example:
Emirate (Local UAE), Arab, Iranians,
South Asians, Western (North and South
America), East Asians, Turks, Filipinos, Sri
Lankan, Indians, Pakistani, and
Europeans. Along with the nationalities
there are also many religions for example:
Islam, Muslim, Catholic/Christian, and
Hindu. Surprisingly, there are more men
than women. Dubai also has a very high
life expectancy 76.51 years in average.
The most important thing about Dubai is
its wonderful sights and economic
opportunities.

Changes to the Environment
The People of Dubai have
changed the environment
commercial, economic, and
climate issues. Before Dubai was
Basically Desert and small
buildings. The city wasnt making
money and it depended a lot on
Abu Dhabi since Abu Dhabi is a
bigger city than Dubai. Everything
changed when Dubai found oil,
then the prince realized that this
could help boost their economy,
but they only traded with fellow
members of the UAE. When they
sold their oil to the other
members of the UAE they didnt
make as much money as they
thought. when the Prince saw
this; he knew that Dubai was
never going to succeed if they
dint trade with other countries. When they decided to open
up the trade to other countries in 1969, they received far
much more money than they
expected and no longer
depended on Abu Dhabi focused
that money on commercial
reasons: they expanded the
streets made buildings, and
expanded the city because the
Prince knew that their oil was
going to run out eventually. Dubai
made buildings that go with the
environment and battle the heat.
Since Dubai is a relatively small
city; instead of making houses that
could only hold on family, they
made buildings that could hold
more than one family in one spot.
That is why you will nd almost no
houses in Dubai. Now, the people
of Dubai changed the landscape
and made buildings that bring more
people to Dubai to work, live, and have fun.

Istanbul to trade wonderful smelling spices,

still has the spices the beautiful jewelry, the silver,

I love shopping at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.
The Grand Bazaar has everything you could
wish for. The Grand Bazaar has everything from
earrings to handbags, clothes, pottery, spices,
restaurants, and last but not least Turkish
Delights! When I rst got there I went into a
watch shop. When I was inside I walked right up
to a counter and saw a watch that could glow in
all the colors of the rainbow! All you had to do
was to press a little button. It was as if a
rainbow had been mushed into the watch. I was
so happy that I had a new watch that whenever
someone walked past me I would make my watch
shine brightly. When the people saw my watch
and myself they would look at me with a scared
and horried look as though I was crazy. Then
they would look at my watch with fascination,
which I think was totally unfair because I had
just had my hair done.
I was very hungry after walking around all day
and it was about 3 pm, so I decided to walk
further along the street. At the corner of a street
called Kalazoo I saw a caf that was called
Bla. I thought that was a very odd name for a
caf but as I walked in I could understand way
they called it Bla. The walls were a slimy
green color that had a hint of poop colored
brown; the walls reminded me of when my
grandma was sick. My grandma had been puking
up this liquid that was not brown or green, it was
a mixture of the two. Her puke looked like it was
coming from a walrus that had a bad case of the
diarrhea, but for my grandma I think it was
coming out of the wrong end. The tables were
shaped like smiley faces but the smiley faces
werent happy, they looked like my grandma when
she was sick. There faces were as brown as the
dirt after a mudslide and the faces looked like they
were in pain. The chairs were pink and uffy
and looked very comfy. The only I had was the
shape of the chair. The chair was shaped like a
mouth but not the mouth of a human but of a
werewolf with pink blood dripping from the
sharp teeth that were sticking out at the top of the
pink uffy chair.
As I sat down on the werewolf seat, a waiter
came up to me and gave me a cup of hot
chocolate. The cup of hot chocolate I got smelled
like noting I had ever smelled in my life. It
smelled so good that I swooned. The cup of hot
chocolate was in a normal cup (it was the only
normal thing in the caf). On top of the hot
chocolate, carefully perched was a mountain of
whipped cream that had been carefully sprinkled
with caramel syrup. When I picked up the hot
chocolate I could smell the melted caramel syrup,
I could smell the melted chocolate, and I could
smell the teaspoon of sugar they had put in the
hot chocolate. When the rst drop of hot
chocolate had landed in my mouth it was like an
explosion in my mouth that had awakened all my
taste buds so they could absorb the taste of the
hot chocolate. The melted caramel just owed in
my mouth like a waterfall. The whipped cream
was white as snow, smooth and thick, and it
tasted sweet like candy but at the same time it
was very plain without the hot chocolate. When
the whipped cream hit the bottom of my mouth
along with the hot chocolate and melted caramel it
was as if 3 different explosions went off at the
same time lling my mouth with a sweet
chocolaty taste. When I left caf Bla I had a
longing to come back. To my surprise not many
people new about caf Bla. That day at the
grand Bazaar was like a box of magic tricks,
new things just kept happening.

Population and Resources
Istanbul was rst called Byzantine and was founded
by the Greeks around 600 BC. When the Romans
conquered Byzantine they renamed it Constantinople.
It was not until 1453 when the Ottoman Turks
conquered Constantinople that the city got the name
Istanbul. In 1923 Ataturk established the Republic of
Turkey and Turkey moved into the modern era. One of
the rst things that Ataturk did was to move the
capital from Istanbul to Ankara.
Istanbul lies on both the European and on the Asian
sides of the Bosphorus and it is the only city in the
world that is situated on two continents. The
Bosphorus is the sea that separates Asia and Europe.
Its location is ideal for trade and has attracted people
from all over the world since it was rst established.
In the past people would come to Istanbul to buy and
sell products in the huge markets. One such market is
the Grand Bazaar. It is one of the largest and oldest
covered markets in the world, with more than 58
covered streets and over 4,000 shops. Here people
would trade spices, food, pottery, jewelry and all kinds
of things.
Even though Istanbul is no longer the capital it has
remained the main center for trade and culture. Today
Istanbul is a well-developed city, vibrant and full of
life, colors, scents and people from many cultures and
nationalities can be there. Istanbul is like a bowl of
different colored candy. The economy is good and has
a promising future. Many people come to Istanbul to
work and others come as tourists. Because of its
location and long tradition of trade, there are many
businesses. Some are big and some are small. Some of
the biggest industries are carpets, marble, wood, and
packaging. There are also many other jobs for people
such as teachers, doctors, artists, taxi drivers and
nannies. Tourists come to enjoy the exquisite food, the
fantastic handicrafts and the beautiful historical sites
including the Grand Bazaar which attracts between
250,000 and 500,000 visitors every day.
In Turkey there are 78,785,584 people, and in
Istanbul there are 10.378 million people. Of this
10.378 million people 99.8% are Sunni Muslim
that means that less than 0.2% are Jewish and
Christian. In Istanbul there are 94 different
nationalities represented. The top 10 main
nationalities in Istanbul are: Turkish, American,
British, Dutch, Canadian, Russians, German,
French, Italians, and Australians. The ofcial
language in Turkey is Turkish but they speak other
languages such as Kurdish, Dimli, Zaza, Azeri,
Kabardian, Arabic, Circassian, Greek, Armenian,
Judezmo, and Gagauz. Istanbul is like a box of every

When Ataturk became President he wanted Istanbul to be a better
and safer place to live. He changed Istanbul by starting a big building
project, developing roads and developing building rules. People adapted
because people like to live in a city that is nice, functions, have access to
resources and is safe. Before the change Istanbul was not as well
developed and organized as it is today. Istanbuls buildings were very
old, unsteady and many were just about to crumble beneath peoples feet.
During this building project Ataturk took down 7300 buildings
and rebuilt them into family houses and apartments. The building
project had started in the 1950s. He also reorganized the road system
so it would be safer for civilians to ride their car. Istanbul has also been
affected by many earthquakes that have caused many buildings to fall
down and thousands of people to die under the fallen buildings, roads
and bridges. In order for this not to happen again, building rules were
developed that would tell people how to build houses that would not fall
down in an earthquake. The rst building rules that are called seismic
regulations were developed in 1939. Some people in Istanbul looked at
earthquakes not as just a bad thing but also as a good thing because
Istanbul then had a new chance to rebuild houses, apartments, ofces,
schools, and bridges to be even safer and also nicer looking than before.
Building rules have become better and also much stricter.
Today Istanbuls infrastructure is much better than before. The
buildings are much stronger and have less probability to collapse during
an earthquake. Istanbul is full of life, colors, scents and with people
living there from all over the world. Istanbul is like a scoop of an every
avored tasting ice cream.
The most important thing that I learned about the changing
environment in Istanbul is how important it is to build safe houses that
will not fall down in an earthquake. It is important to have good
building rules and that those who build follow the rules.
! Istanbul, the European capital of culture for 2010, is a city with an
exciting history of trade and conquerors, culture and a mix of people from
different places with different backgrounds and religious beliefs. Istanbul was
rst called Byzantine when the Greeks ruled. When the Romans came and
conquered Byzantine they renamed it Constantinople. In 1453, the Ottoman
Turks conquered Constantinople and they renamed it Istanbul. During the
Ottoman Empire there were over 1,400 public toilets all around the city. At
the same time, not even the palace in France and the rest of Europe had toilets.
Istanbul was built on a spectacular location where the Bosphorus strait and
the Golden Horn meet and ow into the Marmara, the inland sea that
connects the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea. Istanbuls location was more
valuable then earlier settlers could ever have imagined. Istanbul is the only city
in the world that stands in two different continents, Europe and Asia, making
it an ideal location for trade. Many traders and craftsmen moved to Istanbul
and many huge markets were built where people traded wonderfully smelling
spices, beautifully sparkling jewelry, silver in all forms and shapes, pottery in
all the colors of the rainbow and silk carpets with the most detailed designs.
Istanbul had beautiful buildings that can still be seen and enjoyed today such
as the Haghia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the city wall and many more. This
is what Istanbul was like before Kemal Ataturk took control.
Kemal Ataturk, a military ofcer with a fashionably huge mustache, was the
rst president of Turkey. Ataturk was the leader of the Independence war and
founder of modern day Istanbul (Turkey). The war was between the allies
and Turkish Nationalists. The war was about gaining their independence
back, because the allies were taking charge of Turkey. 1923 was the beginning
of the modern Istanbul. When the allies had left Istanbul, Istanbul was free
to do whatever they wanted and decided to change their government from an
empire to a democratic form of government. After they had changed their
government they decided to move the capital from Istanbul to Ankara. Istanbul
has been developed in many different ways because of Ataturk. Ataturk
developed the countries economy, the way people live, and that people are
allowed to believe in whatever religion they want to. President Ataturk took
down 7300 buildings but he also built many family houses and he reorganized
the road system. Even though Istanbul is no longer the capital of Turkey it is
still a main part of Turkey because of its history and its commercial and
cultural center.
Today Istanbul is a city that as before attracts people from all over the world
who live and work there but also thousands of tourists that visit the city every
day. It is a city with compelling history, rich culture, exquisite food, fantastic
handicrafts and bustling businesses. Old buildings have been restored to their
old splendor and lots of restaurants and small shops have been opened that
overlook the Bosphorus. Economic reforms have helped develop businesses such
as banking, transportation and communication as well, which provide many
people with work. The traditional businesses in textile and clothing
are also still important and you can nd the nicest clothes, shoes
and jewelr y.

The Changes Have
Begun!
Moscow used to be ruled by
the Russian Empire. The houses
and buildings were bunched up
together and it was a busy city.
Also the Moskva River runs
through Moscow making it a very
beautiful sight. Their emperor,
Tsar, ruled the Russian Empire.
He then changed his title name to
Peter the Great.

Then everything changed
when the Russian revolution
started in 1917 and caused the
downfall of the Russian Empire.
During the downfall of the
Russian Empire, a war started
between the anti-communist party
and Vladmir Lenin who was the
leader or the Soviet Union. When
the Soviet Union won the civil war
against the anti-communist party,
communism started to merge to
the USSR. When Vladmir Lenin
died, Joseph Stalin took over and
led the Soviet Union. He made
peace with countries making them
a big force towards World War 2.
When Stalin lost power because
of death, Mickhail Gorbachev took
over and he wanted changes
made. He wanted to add a bit of
democracy in the government,
which made a whole big
commotion. Basically Mickhail
just softened up the USSR, which
led the downfall of the Soviet
Union (this was in 1990). The
USSR stands for Union of Soviet
Socialist Republics.

After, the USSR divided into
several countries, which are
Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan,
Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan,
Georgia, Tajikistan, Moldova,
Kyrgyztan, Lithuania,
Turkmenistan, Armenia, Lativa
and Estonia. Also the Government
in Russia is now Russian
federation. A lot of these
countries speak Russian as their
rst language. Also now there is
freedom from being equal such as
free elections and freedom of
speech! Now they can choose
their leader and really follow their
opinion of whom they want to be
leaded by. Since Moscow was
enclosed meaning that no
businesses were there, now since
the government changed, there
are businesses appearing!
THEN AND NOW
SEE THE
CHANGE!

Population Facts of Truth
The city of Moscow rst became a city in the
mid 12th century by a prince named Vladimir
Suzdal. Moscow is located in Western Russia
where lots of Trading happened
around. Also, the Moskva
(Moscow) river ows through
Moscow making it also a huge
trading place where everyone can
go and trade to get money and
goods. This was the part of the
Volga trading route, which is the
main trading route around north
of Europe and northwestern
Russia via the Volga River. Also
this trading route connects to the
Caspian Sea. Then ports and
docks were built to make it more
convenient to trade. Also people
would come to Moscow because of job
opportunities and for entertainment such as
the Bolshoi Ballet, which takes place in the
Bolshoi Theatre.
Now Moscow is a producer of oil and is the
MAIN producer of vodka. Also jewelry is
produced and watches which is also a great
attraction. A lot of people
came to Moscow to really
embrace the cultures around.
Also of course a lot of the
people shop, sight see and
look around the amazing
buildings and places all
around Moscow!
The population in
Moscow holds 11,514,300
people in this city, which is
about 8% of Russia. Moscow
is surprisingly the largest
city in Europe. The major
nationalities that are represented are mostly
former soviet republics such as Ukariane,
Armenia, Azerbadjan, Tatars. The major
industries that are in Moscow now are
Whiskey, Almaz-Holding, Rerio, Grey stone
and Bank of Moscow.

Moscow was under
communist rule right after
the fall of the Russian
Empire. Moscow was a
very closed city in Russia
until the fall of
communism, which
happened in the 1980s.
They were more open to
more businesses, which
helped boost up the
economy. Also more
buildings and malls were
added in the great city of
Moscow.
The rst
McDonalds that was
introduced in Moscow was
on January 31, 1990. At
that time, it was the
biggest McDonalds
worldwide! But in the year
2012, they will build a
bigger one in London. Also
the rst vodka distillery
was made in 1774.
Now Moscow is
doing well economically
because they arent
enclosed anymore. Since
they are open to more
businesses their economy
is doing well though, more
things have been more
expensive but all the
fantastic structures are
still the same. Also, more
roads were built due to
destruction and train rails
that were already built but
Moscow has no more room
for them so they covered it
up with roads. Basically
Moscow is doing great and
they are truly successful.
My First bite
Thursday September
6, 1900 (my first entry)
Dear Diary,
I was born on June
22, 1972 at 2:23 am in the
morning. It was a stormy
Tuesday that day. (I know
this because of my mom.)
At that point, there was
still a communist
government that was going
on until there came the day
when it was the downfall of
the USSR (Union of the
Soviet Socialist Republics)
and communism. It was in
the 1980s when dooms
day came for me. In my
opinion I loved the
communist rule because
everyone was equal until
communism was no more!
I felt like a Tornado rose
up in my country and
destroyed everything in its
path leaving everything
just dilapidated! After all
the transition of the
government, there came
something new in my life!
A fast food restaurant
named McDonalds! Right
away I called all my friends
to come there to meet me.
We were agitated by that
mascot, Ronald McDonald.
To me, he looked like a
clown who just got red
because of his frown on his
face, though it was kind of
weird because he had a
smile also that was
painted. Anyway though, I
was also amazed by all the
food that was presented
before my eyes! I had
never heard of a
McChicken burger or
French fries or even a
sundae cone! In my head I
was thinking why would
they name an ice cream
Sunday? My friends and I
then ordered a big mac,
fries and coke! When we
opened the box that said
big mac, there it was, a
HAMBURGER!
One bite and I felt
like I was in
heaven. The
second felt like
there were angles
in the background-
singing alleluia! I
am DEFINATLEY
amazed by the
development that
Moscow has been
through. Even since
communism was no more,
I really feel that Moscow is
developing more and more!
Moscow is denitely like

In the past Hanoi and all of Vietnam were at war. People changed the
environment by bombing with napalm and other chemicals, which killed
vegetation and destroyed buildings. But then over the years after the war
Vietnam rebuilt the city and let hotels and other companies settle in Hanoi and
they bring back how the French improved it but it is more modern. In Hanoi the
modern buildings show that Vietnam has adapted once agoain to modern
expectations and is rebuil to tell the tale of the devastating war.

Impact of the Past on the Present
Vietnam was a country that was not colonized until the 1800ths. When the French colonized
it, its neighbors Laos and Cambodia were colonized too.
!The French came to Vietnam to take its valuable export materials Rice and Rubber. The
French also came to Vietnam for the spot it was located in Asia. The French decided to take
over Vietnam because of a man called Pigneau de Behaine by convincing him that he was
going do catholic missionary work to king Louis XVI. The people in Vietnam were not too
happy with French colonization and control because a lot of Farmers lost their land and
grew poor while the French colonist grew rich. The effect resulted a man called Ho Chi Minh
to grow an army called the Viet Minh during World War 2 so they could overthrow their
French Rulers. Then in 1946 war broke out between the French and the Viet Minh. The
result of that lead to the separation of the country to a north communist Vietnam and a
south anti-communist Vietnam the government in the south wasnt to popular with its
people. Just because of the French another country got inuenced in their problem which
resulted the Vietnam War were 1.2 million north and south Vietnamese soldiers and civilians
died and 58,000 Americans died in the tragedy. You can still see the French Landmarks left
in Hanoi and other parts of Vietnam some examples are the Hilton Prison (Hanoi), Hanoi
railway station and the Presidential palace (Hanoi). You can also see the French were there
with some of the foods in Vietnam like the breads that the French make.

POPULATION
The city of Hanoi was established in 2897 BC. It was located on the North part of Vietnam and
was established by Hung king it was also then conquered by the French and was called the
French Indochina with Laos and Cambodia it then was in war with U.S.A.
In the past people came to Hanoi because of its valuable recourse Rice and Rubber.
Today people come to Hanoi because they have job offers like coca-cola and Hilton etc. They
also go because not most of the jobs are taken since it is a developing Marketing Economy and
still has some communism in their government. But not bad communism the type of communism
were everything is organized well like the trash on the streets. Everything is clean.
The population is 1,089,000 and is still rising. The major nationalities represented are 97%
Vietnamese and 3% Chinese or Khmer and Cham. The religions are 60% Buddhist, 7% Roman
Catholic and 33% other. The major industries and businesses today include Hilton, Melia, Coca-
Cola and sotel. Today people choose to live in Hanoi due to change of weather (not always hot
or cold) it also has lots of good teaching, Marketing, and it also has good technology and
scientic university's. Therefore Hanoi is now a more populated area and is as I said before a
Marketing Economy but still has a bit of communism left which is good in some cases due to the
pollution on the ground.
Anecdote
Ho Tay Lake Waterpark
! When we went to Hanoi the rst thing I had on my list of things to do was the
waterpark then the rst thing we did was get to the hotel change and go to the water park
instantaneously. It was so much fun everywhere you looked there were waterslides you could go
on super tall ones that were super fast, their were some small ones that you went even faster but
they were shorter, the best one was the most gigantic it was the fastest because it was extremely
slanted. You could not look down of how frightening it looked. Then when you were falling on the
slide you could feel your cheeks jiggling. But at the end of the day it was the best ride of them all!
You would come home saying lets go back PLEASE! Besides who doesnt like waterparks! In the
end I felt like living there so I could go there every weekend.

Did you hear that
Bangkok port was bombed
during World War II? It was
occupied by Japanese
troops then so it suffered
extensive bombing from the
Allied Forces. This reminds
me of the bombing of Pearl
Harbor. Efforts have been
made in 1938 to construct a
modern Port of Bangkok but
due to the bombing, it was
left sitting for several years
until construction resumed
after the war and the Port
Authority of Thailand was
created to oversee it.
Today, Bangkok Port
looks a lot livelier. Unlike how
it used to be, there are now
tons of storage units which
tell us that it is involved in a
lot more business
transactions. It offers a wide
variety of services such as
warehouse storage and
mechanical handling
equipment. It has also
enhanced its tools and

these improvements,
Bangkok Port is one of Asias

Impact on past to the present
Thailand used to be known as Siam and
the government was under absolute monarchy.
The Thais thought that their kings were like
gods because of the inuence of their Hindu
beliefs. They were very dependent on their
kings. They looked up to them and followed
their orders. But like everything in this world, it
had to come to an end. After a bloodless coup
against the absolute monarch, constitutional
monarchy replaced absolute monarchy in 1932
and Siam changed its name to Thailand which
means Land of the Free. Thais at this time
showed stronger nationalism. Then World War
II challenged Thailand. Because Europeans
and Americans were preoccupied defending
themselves against German attacks in Europe,
they became less interested in their Asian
colonies, so Asian nationalists grabbed the
chance to become the leaders. Thailand
entered war on the side of Japan but due to
the Japanese campaign that Asians should
rule Asians, the Thais realized they didnt want
to be under Japan either because they wanted
to stand on their own two feet. So they secretly
planned to go against the Japanese soldiers.
They sabotaged Japanese trains and buildings
and didnt support the 30,000 Japanese troops
during the war so their ally lost and Thailand
remained free.
As we can see today in the capital city,
Bangkok, the Thais cultivated every aspect of
their culture. There is a wide variety of food
choices that makes your mouth water because
of its distinctive avors. Thai arts and crafts is
also uniquely Thai because they make use of
materials available in their environment like
palm leaves, rattan, wicker and coconut. Thai
music and literature also developed. As for the
native people, they are very welcoming and
hospitable. If all these didnt happen, the
country especially Bangkok, would have been
a Japanese colony and their food, arts, and the
people might not have become as they are
today.

The land of smilles
Bangkok Thailand was the most
interesting place Ive ever visited,
because it has a tragic history
but that is what makes it more
interesting. There is a story
behind the train over the river Kwai.
During World War II, over 300 soldiers of
the Allied Forces had to make the train
tracks. When they nished it American
soldiers squad came and blew it up.
This prevented Japanese soldiers to
travel through it to attack the
neighboring countries. Now you can ride
the train. When I did I had a blast. It was
very interesting to see the cities that we
passed by. I saw the graves that the
Japanese soldiers put up there
but now a lot of them were dug
up and put in proper graves. If
you do go there, there is a
chance that you can nd some
things to remind of that fateful period.
There are souvenirs that you can buy
too. That is all I will tell you now so have

come and see the citys true beauty
Hawaii is one of the most recent U.S
states made up entirely of islands. It
became a U.S state on August 21,1959.
Pearl Harbor found in Honolulu and
was known as Waimomi, which means
pearl water. U.S Hawaiian relations
began with the whaling and trading
industry. On January 20, 1887, the U.S
senate allowed the navy to temporarily
lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base.
Americans wanted to protect their port
of goods and whales. As the industry
became more extravagant the senate of
the United States permanently assigned a
war ship in Hawaiian waters on
November 9, 1887.
As WWII was occurring the Japanese
military declared war with China
because they wanted to expand their
territory. The U.S began to take defensive
measures because they were unaware of
Japans intentions. America put economic
sanctions on Japan and cut supplies like
oil to threaten Japan but Japan stood
their ground.
" U.S tried to be neutral but Pearl
Harbor was an irresistible target to
Japan because it lacked defense. America
thought that they would not be attacked
because it was very near the United
States. Instead, Japan would attack
nearby European colonies. Further more,
Japan was 4000 miles away from Pearl
Harbor.
On December 7, 1941 the empire of Japan
attacked Pearl Harbor and this resulted
to the United States joining WWII.
! The Bombing of Pearl Harbor
resulted to more than 2000 American
soldiers and sailors dead, 20 American
naval vessels, battleships and two
hundred airplanes destroyed. This
tragedy united the Americans in
warfare. This effect can still be seen in
todays Americans.
" More Americans joined to serve the
military and America has became more
condent in war fare. These tragedy
effects are still seen in todays Americans
by uniting America in warfare. Also
Americans join to serve the military.
Americans became more condent in
warfare. The tragedy of Pearl Harbor
has made changes in todays Honolulu,
Hawaii.
" Pearl Harbor can be considered a
very popular tourist attraction-
displaying artifacts of WWII. The tourists
also go there for the widely attractive
environment and to explore Hawaiian
cultures and traditions. However, it is
still a United States navy deep/water
naval base and the head quarters of the
U.S pacic eet.

The Majestic Beauty of Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is a roaring tiger of
technology with a magnicent
shine. Tokyo used to be Edo,
the largest city in the world,
until World War II when the city
was bombed back into the
earth. The population of this
growing city so far is
approximately 12,790,000
people. Many of them came
from foreign countries and
have only added to the majesty
of this city. Between 1960 and
2010, the city underwent a
huge physical change. They
are still actively changing their
landscape. Due to prots from
the Korean War for selling
goods to the armies the
Japanese people rebuilt their
city quicker. Tokyo, after
WWII, was actually very poor.
Nowadays you cannot see
any resemblance to its past
selves, both rich and poor, it
is even better. You can nd
much more about the city of
Tokyo, and no matter how
much you know about the
city there is always something
that will catch your attention,
so come and learn more!

Impacts of the Past on the
Present
Tokyo used to be known as Edo,
which was originally built in the swamplands of
the Kanto plain. It was, as Tokyo is today,
divided into townships instead of being one
unied city. The country had many military
victories in the surrounding countries, and at
one point Edo dwarfed the much older cities of
Paris and London and was the largest city in
the world. In 1931, Japan attacked Manchuria
and then most of China. Japan continued to
exert their power upon other Southeast Asian
countries. Then everything changed when the
Japanese Empire entered WWII. At the
beginning of the war Japan signed a treaty
with Germany and Italy. Shortly thereafter,
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, bringing one of
their greatest rivals, the United States, into war
in the Pacic region. As a result, Tokyo was
basically destroyed; due to the United States
air assault and bombing campaign. During the
rst bombing, which began on April 18, 1942,
364 people were killed. The second bombing,
which occurred during March 9-10, 1944,
involved incendiary bombs that claimed 70,000
to 80,000 lives, due to the effectiveness of the
ames on the wooden structures throughout
the city. Basic needs such as food and water
were scarce. Some parts of Tokyo suffered as
much damage as Hiroshima and Nagasaki did
after the atomic bombs were dropped on those
cities. The people lived in fear of the US
military and any further destruction they may
cause. This led to the eventual surrender of
Japan to Allied Forces, and the beginning of
reconstruction efforts throughout Japan. As a
result, the city of Tokyo, Japan is now a major
global city again. Instead of making their city
anew, they rebuilt everything the same as
before. Reconstruction was faster than
expected due to the prots Japan made from
the Korean War. To be specic, the purchase of
food, medical supplies, and other goods
manufactured in Japan by the US to supply
Allied soldiers. Japans education was also
improved, bringing vast numbers of foreign
students who then returned home with a better
understanding of Asias role in the world. One
of Tokyos proudest moments came when they
hosted the 1964 summer Olympics. The city
has undergone many changes to transition
from ancient Edo to modern day Tokyo. The
change directly after World War II from a
devastated, bombed out, poor town to the
huge, rich, technological powerhouse it is
today seems like a miracle. Even in the direst
of circumstances, Tokyo, and Japan on the
whole, will always be moving to the future, no
looking back.

Population
! The city of Tokyo was
established in 10,000 B.C. It was located
in the swamplands of the Kanto plain, at
the southern tip of Japan, on the shore of
a bay facing the Pacic Ocean. This was
possibly done for trade or for naval
defense. In the past, people came to
Tokyo because in 1603 the military class
was growing, so the peasants ocked to
serve them in hopes of a better life. Today
people come to Tokyo because of the
opportunities of education, nance, IT,
healthcare, corporate culture, good
housing, health benets, superior schools,
and exciting social life for all age groups.
The population of this growing
city is approximately 12,790,000. The
religions are Shintoism at 83.9% of the
population, Buddhism with 71.4%,
Christianity 2%, and the rest are 7.8%.
Two major languages in Japan are
Japanese and Korean, due to the close
proximity of the two nations. The major
nationalities are Japanese at 98.5%,
Korean .5%, Chinese .4%, and the other
countries make up the remaining .6%. The
majority of the population, 64%, ts into
the age group of 15 to 64. The next age
group consists of ages 0-14, which has
13.1%. The group with the least amount of
people are those from age 65 and
onwards, with 9%.
The major industries are steel,
heavy electrical equipment, construction
and mining equipment, motor vehicles and
parts, telecommunication equipment,
machine tools, automated production
systems, chemicals, and textiles. Today
people decide to live in Tokyo for several
important reasons. The city has the latest
and best technology, high personal
income, good medical insurance plans,
cultural and traditional events or festivals,
lots of public holidays, healthy foods, good
hospitality and services, an exciting
nightlife, never ending chances for new
experiences, and because it has a very low
crime rate compared to other major global
cities.
As you can probably tell from
this article, Tokyo is my favorite city and I
highly recommend it to the entire
international community. Tokyo has
become a boiling pot of different
nationalities and a hub for many large
electronics companies, such as Sony. It is
like a cake with many different types of
frosting waiting to be eaten.

The Japanese people
changed Tokyos
landscape,
following the
bombing of
Tokyo by the
US during WWII.
The destruction
caused by the bombing reduced
the city to near total annihilation,
much like Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Many years after the
war, Tokyo changed from its
centuries old structure to its
modern form. The Japanese
people changed the city
environment to keep pace with
the contemporary world. Before
the change, the city did not have
any high rise buildings and most
buildings were made of wood
and had an older design.
The rst environmental
change was during World War II,
when the US bombed Tokyo
from 1942-1944, resulting in
most of the city being destroyed.
The second environmental
change occurred immediately
after the war when the Japanese
rebuilt Tokyo as it stood before,
with buildings of wood and no
skyscrapers. The rebuilding
process gained momentum due
to the prots made later on in
the Korean War. The nal change
of modernization happened
between 1960 and 2010. After
the change, the buildings were
made of metal and glass and
most of the buildings are high
rises that are built to withstand
massive earthquakes. This is
very important as Japan is highly
prone to seismic activity.
Another major change was the
city being lit up at night instead
of being pitch black as it was
prior to and directly after World
War II.
Due to these changes
Tokyo is now a modern city. If
they had not changed their city
over the years they would still be
a rural, traditional town in Japan.
Tokyo is also the thriving
metropolis of today because of
the money the country earned
through international sales by its
vast business corporations. I
learned that Tokyo is a vibrant,
modern city that will keep up
with the times, constructing their
buildings in new designs, and
will be constantly growing for
many years to come.

The British established Kuala
Lumpur in the early 19th
century. It is a good location
for trade because it is in the
center of two rivers namely
Klang and Gombak rivers. It
is bordered by the Titiwangsa
Mountains in the east, and
Malacca straits in the west,
making it the best place to
grow crops and plants for
farming. Since Kuala Lumpur
is known for tin, they are
earning success in electronics.
Kuala Lumpur is also known
for its modern structures and
job opportunities in
technology. Most companies
invest in Kuala Lumpur
because of its rich resources
and modern structures.
! In Malaysia there are
28,728,607 people. In Kuala
Lumpur itself there are about
7.3 million people that live
there. The major nationalities
are represented by the
Malays, Chinese, and Indians.
The main religions are Islam
(Muslim), Buddhism, Taoism,
Hinduism, and Christianity.
The major industries are
electronics and farming. In
Malaysia the job that is
always open is banking,
working for governments,
farming and business related
industries because of the
investors coming in from
different countries.
! Kuala Lumpur is rich
in culture and races. Kuala
Lumpur is also developing
into technologies and
employments. In present there
are more tourists coming in

Kuala Lumpur is where Im
from, and is the Capital of
Malaysia! What I would like to
talk about is when I use to go to
this beach called Port Dickson
with my family, Port Dickson is
huge, and some beach areas
here are private. I dont
remember what area it was in
Port Dickson, but the Resort
where we stayed is part of the
long beach stretch. What I like
about the beach was that I
enjoyed the fresh air and
including tropical drinks such
as mangos, pineapple, and any
other fruit that grows on trees.
The sand there was soft and
smooth making it kind of hard
to run but in my opinion the
sand felt great.
The beach had umbrella huts so
that people could rest if they
get tired. Even though the
place is a beach there are also
many trees so usually when the
beach gets hot I would go where
the trees are until the clouds
cover the sunlight, because
Malaysia can get very hot. In
the afternoon it gets windy, and
to me when it gets windy I like
how it goes through me as I
run. Kuala Lumpur is a great
place to go to vacation because
you could have fun especially
when you are looking for a
beach to relax at. I strongly
suggest for the people that are
reading this text goes to Kuala
Lumpur because is a great
place!

Why should you go to KUALA
LUMPUR?
Kuala Lumpur is known as Muddy
Influence because back then Kuala
Lumpur was a huge land filled with
swamps. As years goes by Malaysia
became wealthy because of the tin the
people discovered in the Ampung area, but
during WW2 the Japanese occupied
Malaysia including Kuala Lumpur making
the place a noisy and violent place. Now
Kuala Lumpur is a tropical city of
Malaysia, and trading is successful
because in Malaysia they grew lots of palm
trees that can lead to palm oil. Kuala
Lumpur has a population of 1,809,699
people that lives there. Out of those
1,809,699 people that lives in Kuala
Lumpur about 50.4% of them are Malay,
23.7% of them are Chinese, 11% of them
are indigenous, 7.1% of them are Indian,
and 7.8% of them are others.
Kuala Lumpur is a tropical city filled
with animals, natives, and fresh air. Kuala
Lumpur is mainly known by people all over
the world; because of the famous Patronas
Twin Tower that is built in the middle of
the city and the tallest building meaning
you can get a great view of the city if you
are on the bridge. Kuala Lumpur is rich in
culture and traditions for tourist to learn
what happened in the past or what they do
now. The orangutans are animals that
were discovered in Malaysia and in the zoo
of Kuala Lumpur you could visit the zoo
and see their families. I believe someone
that is planning a trip to visit cites I
suggest they should go to Kuala Lumpur!

Calcutta
There is an amazing beauty that
exists in Calcutta. However, over
time, people have changed the
environment in unsustainable
ways, like the perpetual cutting
down of so many trees, the
production or construction of more
buildings, and the citizens
throwing their garbage into the
rivers. This is very bad because at
this rate, the rivers in Calcutta will
end up being like dirty brown
mud. As for the population,
Calcutta has a large amount of
about 15 million people! People
would come to Calcutta because of

because of its fantastic

ABOUT CALCUTTA
there is an amazing beauty that exists in
Calcutta. However, over time, people have
changed the environment in unsustainable
environmental ways, like, the perpetual
cutting down of so many trees, the production
or construction of more buildings, and the
citizens throwing their garbage into the rivers.
To me, this looks like a lot of danger and
damage to not only the environment, but the
water we drink, and the ecosystem in the
rivers. The people in Calcutta are adapting to
this damage or conict by doing nothing!
While the other business people in Calcutta
continue to construct more building because of
the prot, or money they earn, and so they can
create tourist attractions. Before these
problems occurred, the industrialization was
less, there was a lot more greenery in the city,
the rivers were actually properly maintained,
and there was lesser construction. The air that
was once as clear as crystal, is now as clean as
mud. At this rate, Calcutta will end up as dirty
as a garbage truck.
More specically, the river conict happened
because of the massive growth of urbanization
in Calcutta, and since the population increased
dramatically, the amount of poverty in
Calcutta grew as well. This made the poor
people throw more garbage in the river
because they have no space to keep it, or live
organized lives. The garbage that was sent to
the river caused it to have many toxics and
chemicals inside of it. This problem wouldnt
have happened if the British had remained in
Calcutta, because when they ruled India, they
made sure they maintained all of the cities,
rivers, and royal or important facilities and
monuments. These problems started to appear
right after the British left. Construction started
to grow during the times of the British rule,
and continues to grow even now. People
started cutting down trees as Calcutta
continued to expand and grow in size. This
caused the landscape to be lled up with a
large quantity of buildings, ats and roads.
Calcutta presently, is a place where the water
is really contaminated, theres less greenery to
protect the city from harm, more construction,
and a place which has very, very, very dirty
air. A thick layer of polluted smog covers the
city. You can smell the polluted air when you
step out of your home. Due to insufcient
planning, theres water logging in various
parts of the city during the monsoon season.
This further leads to the spread of diseases like
typhoid, malaria and jaundice.
We can only hope that the people of Calcutta
start to understand what theyre doing, and try
to inict a better change in the environment.
They need to understand how to treat the earth
better, and sustainably. The most important
lessons to learn will be to not throw garbage in
the rivers, to keep the city clean and to stop
cutting down trees. One can underestimate the
value of greenery in our world.
Anecdote
Calcutta is a beautiful
city that is located in the
continent of Asia. When I
was there, in Calcutta, I
was so amazed by the
wide variety of clubs and
the amazing sports
facilities that it contains.
These sports facilities are
so amazing that anyone,
and I mean anyone,
would die for. The
squash courts are well
maintained, their
extensive cricket elds
that give you the feeling
of pure nature, there are
sandy clay tennis courts,
and a lot more other
facilities. These clubs
have amazing restaurants
too. In the restaurant Ive
been to, the sh was very
well cooked and had a
wide variety of avors
inside of it. There were
also the kebabs that
would just melt in your
mouth. I think we now
both know that Calcutta
truly is the city of joy.

decided to form or create Calcutta because it
was a perfect place for trade, and this was
good for the East India Company, because
they wanted to import goods via Calcutta to
Britain. People in the past would come to
Calcutta because of the wide variety of jobs
that were available, and once again, so they
could create trade opportunities. There were
many amazing monuments and landmarks that
were great tourist attractions, and were
pleasing to the eye. Calcutta is located in West
Bengal, and lies on the banks of the Hooghly
River. This location was extremely important
because it allowed people to trade, or import
the goods they received back into their
country.
In Calcutta there are many opportunities due
to the wide variety of companies and
industries. You can get jobs in restaurants,
communication centers, in hospitals, a
mechanical company (an engineer) etc. There
are other jobs too, like in the mining and tea
packaging industries . Major businesses in
Calcutta are the following: Commercial
businesses, electronic industries, and textile or
fabric industries. People still come to Calcutta
because of the amazing landmarks that are still
there today. There are so many, that they
make perfect tourist attractions. Not only that,
but Calcutta makes people feel welcome
because of its unique multicultural personality.
There many fun things to do there too, like
going to an amusement park, going on a tram
ride, or kite ying with other people (there are
lots of kites oating around in the sky of
Calcutta), and lastly, eating the large variety of
food thats available!!!
Calcutta is a huge city which has a total
amount of about 15 to 16 million people.
Most of the people who live in Calcutta are
Indians, but, Calcutta also has many other
people from different nationalities, like
Chinese, Europeans, and a lot more. Hinduism
is the most common religion in Calcutta.
80.5% of the people are Hindus while the rest
of the people are from all sorts of other
religions, like Jews,Muslims, Christians, etc.
The languages spoken in Calcutta are mostly
English, and Bengali. It has a special locality
for the Chinese, called Chinatown, and has a
dedicated Chinese newspaper. Calcutta is
presently the 7
th
largest city in India according
to size, with a total of 187 square kilometers.
Calcutta is now a multicultural city which
provides a lot of opportunities and
employment to everyone. Its a port which
helps the trade opportunities to develop and
grow. It is the third largest city in India, and
leaves a strong impact on all those that reside
or go there !!

Impacts on the Past and Present
Calcutta presently to me is a great place,
but still does have some negatives. Today
Im going to focus on the historical event
of the British colonizing India, and
making other related history to Calcutta.
Calcutta used to actually be a small place
that hardly anyone knew about. In fact,
Calcutta never used to exist until the time
or year of 1690. This was when Job
Charnok, agent of the East India
Company, combined the three villages,
Sutanti, Gobindapur, and Kalikata, to
become the new city of Calcutta. Bengal
was originally ruled by the Mughals, and
Murshidabad was the capital at that time.
Murshidabad was located at about 60
miles north of Calcutta. Calcutta also had
less poverty before the British made
changes to Calcutta, and colonized it.
Then everything changed when the
Mughals had a war with the British in
1756. The British were actually allowed
to trade from Calcutta earlier, but they
had to pay a yearly payment of 3,000
rupees (before the war). In 1757, the
British captured Calcutta in a brutal war
lead by Robert Clive. This war was called
the Battle of Plassey. Later on in 1772
Calcutta was made the Capital of India.
The British started this colonization in
Calcutta because of their fantastic trading
system and resources. Calcutta served as
a perfect port for their trading activities.
This is why British wanted the control
over Calcutta.
Calcutta was developed in many different
ways when the British colonized it. Good
examples are the communication system
and improvement of transportation
vehicles. Organized railway systems
were built by the British which improved
their communication drastically, as for the
transportation vehicles, tracks were laid
and trams were introduced in to the city.
The British also built many different
landmarks for Calcutta, like the General
Post Ofce, which is otherwise known as
the GPO, the Writers Building, the
Howrah Bridge, Raj Bahavan, Fort
William, Shaheed Minar and Victoria
Memorial. When Queen Victoria was
crowned, it was in the Victoria Memorial.
Now, if the British Queen was not
crowned in Calcutta, then the beautiful
monument called Victoria Memorial
wouldnt be there. So not only did the
British help make landmarks, but they
also caused some of Calcuttas landmarks
to be built. The British also helped
improve the postal services, and
telegraphy. Not everything was positive
about the British landing up in India or
Calcutta. Some things were negative, like,
the Black Hole Tragedy. This devastating
incident happened before the Battle of
Plassey when the Mughals won the war
against the British. This incident
happened in 1756 on June 20
th
. About
146 British soldiers had been imprisoned
in a small room where they were all
cramped up. One of the
survivors had said that 123
prisoners succumbed due to
being suffocated (mainly), by
the intense heat, or by being
cramped up.
As a result of the British
developing Calcutta as a
fantastic new city, it still stands
alone as a great city today even
though the British have left. Not only
that, but the amazing landmarks are such
a beautiful and entertaining sight of the
city that the people take great pride and
interest in them. The business in Calcutta
has also improved because of the
advanced modes of transport and
communication that the British
introduced, especially the post and
telegraph system. Although there were
many positive effects that the British
created, there were also some negatives,
like the amount of poverty. Poverty has
actually grown since the period of the
British colonizing India.

A Bit About
Singapore...
Singapore is given the nickname
of the 'Happiest country in Asia'. It
grew in importance as a center for the
trade in Southeast Asia, becoming one
of the major port cities rapidly under
the British rule. A lot of business
happened there; ships loaded and
unloaded at every part of the day.
However World War II destroyed
everything in its way and forced
people to sleep in streets and have a
hard time going through everyday life.
However today, Singapores
population has reached 4,740,737.
The major nationalities represented
are Chinese, Malay, and Indian. These
people came for job opportunities,
good weather conditions, and for the
plentiful fertile land. This also led to
the increase of Chinatowns, Little India
and Arab Street. Singapore is always
a welcoming city. Orchard road which
used to be nothing more than where
crops grew is now a haven for
shoppers and has some of the citys
biggest malls with a selection of over
2000 brands. Also, the land in Marina
Bay is unrecognizable due to the
reclamation projects, which made the
waters surrounded by expensive real
estate. The Marina Bay Sands is a
popular hotel which cost a total of 8
billion Singapore dollars to build. You
will find a wide variety of things to do
in Singapore if you ever make a visit!

Singapore grew in
importance as a center for the
trade in Southeast Asia,
becoming one of the major
port cities rapidly under the
British rule. A lot of business
happened there; ships loaded
and unloaded at every part of
the day.
Then everything changed
during World War II.
Thousands of locals were killed
and injured and the survivors
had a hard time trying to get
through everyday life since
everything in their path had
been destroyed. And to make
matters worse, the British had
to surrender Singapore to the
Japanese because they had no
other choice. the Japanese
ruled Singapore from 1942 to
1945 as a result of the war.
However, the British were able
to gain control once more
after the Japanese surrender.
However, Singapore was
unsure of this idea of letting
the British rule them again.
After all, they weren't able to
protect Singapore from the
war and the Japanese. It was
then that Lee Kuan Yew
stepped up and founded the
People's Action Party(PAP);
who fought for Singapore's
independence and freedom
from the other countries.
As a result of the PAP, the
city of Singapore is now
independent and self-
governing and is currently
rising in their economy. New
laws are being written by the
Singapore government instead
of the British, which is what
made Singapore what it is
today. Also English, which is
now one of their official
language is being used more
commonly throughout
Singapore because of the past,
when the British were under
control and spread the
language. You can tell how
there is an impact of the past
on the present today.
Modern Singapore was
established in January
19, 1819 by Thomas
Stamford Raffles. It was
located in the coast of the
Malaysian Peninsula on
the major sea-lanes;
which allowed it to
always be dependent on
entrepot trade.
In the past, people came to
Singapore from different places
such as China, East Indies, and
Europe because of its location,
job opportunities, to escape from
war and famine, good weather
conditions, and for the fertile
land. However, most of them
were not intending to continue to
live in Singapore. They were
thinking of returning to Singapore
after they had earned some
money.
The migration at this time also led
to the big diversity in culture in
Singapore which led to the rise of
Chinatowns, Arab Street, and
Little India.
Singapores population has
reached 4,740,737. The major
nationalities represented are
Chinese, Malay, and Indian. They
come to live here because of all
the opportunities in jobs and
education, the clean, safe and
efficient society. Also, in
Singapore, family is the most
important unit; the family and
community always come first in
Singapore. Their official
language is English, Mandarin,
Malay, Tamil, although a lot
speak Singlish, which is a mix of
all these languages.
Not only do people enjoy
living here, but its famous for its
tourism too. Tourism is one of
Singapores largest service sector
allowing Singapores economy to
grow. Also, Singapore Airlines
was voted the best airline in the
world, Singapores Shangri-La as
the best business hotel
worldwide, and Singapores
Changi Airport as the best
airport in the world.
Therefore, Singapore is now
known as an international and
clean place to live in. They are
also given the nickname of the
Happiest country in Asia.
A Day In Singapore

Singapore has an amazing
amusement park to visit. When, I
got to go to Singapores universal
Studios, just this Saturday with my
two best friends who I have known
for the past 5 years. It was my
second time there, but it was just
the same as it had been; I could see
the colorful hotdog stand in the
corner- which I grabbed one on the
way to Battle Star Galactica,
which to me, was the best roller-
coaster in the whole wide world! It
was thrilling and made my heart
pump fast. I even felt my skin come
off of my body as I went down the
slope of the roller-coaster. Finally,
we got off and each person got two
red and blue snow cones each. It
was extremely icy and had a tangy
taste, but fruity at the same time!
After the exhausting day, we went
to a restaurant called Banana Leaf
and ate from a menu of over 400
choices. All of them made my taste
buds go wild. I couldnt help
myself; there were mouth watering
food waiting for me so I shoved
more and more in my mouth that
my friends even called me a pig!

Changes in the Environment
The people of Singapore are cutting
down trees and having more and more
reclamation projects. In the 1960s
Singapore was only 581.5 sq. km.
However, due to the reclamation
projects Singapore is now 723.2 sq.
km. There are also predictions saying
that Singapore will grow by another
100 sq. km in 2033.
I mentioned earlier that a lot of
trees are being cut down. An example
of this is Orchard Road. Orchard Road
was an avenue that ran alongside a
section of nutmeg, pepper and fruit
plantations. There was hardly any
traffic and people used horse-drawn
carriages, bullock carts, and
occasionally, a motorcar would go by.
However, now, its become a haven for
shoppers and has some of the citys
biggest malls with a selection of over
2000 brands. The traffic there goes on
24/7.
An example of the reclamation
project is Marina Bay. It was a strip of
sea surrounded by marshlands. Boats
had to go through its narrow channel
in order to dock at Johnstons Pier,
which were welcoming to travelers
sailing into Singapore. However, since
150 years ago, the bay is
unrecognizable. There were a series of
land reclamation projects, which made
the waters surrounded by expensive
real estate. The three towers in the
picture cost 8billion Singapore dollars
to build. Also, the ever so famous
Changi Airport is built on reclaimed
land.
Singapore is rapidly changing
throughout the years. The government
constructed new towns, which led to
industrial pollution, limited natural
fresh water resources, waste disposal
problems, and seasonal smoke/haze
from forest fires. And because of this, a
lot of their original land is becoming
unrecognizable.
A lot of money has been spent on
these projects but are they really worth
it?

THE CITY OF THE FUTURE...
Shanghai is like a Swiss army knife; it may not be
big but it has anything a person could need. You may
wonder; what is all that Shanghai has to offer? Could
it be an ideal home? My answer is YES! If you havent
noticed Shanghai is full of great job opportunities and
the same for education too, there is sight seeing,
shopping, and interesting cuisine. Thus making
Shanghai home to 16,650,000 people. Today the city of
Shanghai has changed from a small village/ market
place to one of the worlds strongest economic
powerhouses that still continues to grow rapidly each
year. This proves that although they have been
through tough times, Shanghai has proven to be a very
wise investment for several highly ranked
businesses. If you are in search of a new home or

The Modern City of Shanghai
A Map of SHANGHAI
[2]
Traveling through Shanghais past and looking towards its future...
By1936 Shanghai was one of the largest cities
in the world and was the biggest nancial city in
Eastern Asia with a population of 3 million including
35,000 foreigners. These foreigners helped make
Shanghai a well developed city and brought trade,
nance and investments to the new and growing city.
The city was practically split in half, Chinese in the
east and westerners in the west of Shanghai.
Shanghai was responsible for half of all the imports
and exports of goods in China. It was also the only city
in China that was run by merchants and not warlords.
Shanghai was very successful and was referred to as
the Paris of the East, the New York of the West. As
early as 1921, thoughts started to change, when a
group of philosophers disagreed with the traditional
Chinese values and expressed it by writing books that
they handed out to the public. This started the move
towards Communism as many people thought it
would be a better form of government with people
being more equal in their places in life rather then
separated by the strict traditional structures of
Chinese society and the lawless rule of warlords. On
October 1
st,
1949 Mao Zedong (the leader of China)
declared that the PRC (Peoples Republic of China)
would now be a Communist country. This change in
the form of government was followed by much
violence as the new Communist Party had to force
much of the Chinese population to conform to the new
ideology. Although the Communist government
claimed that the country had a peaceful transition
into Communism, mass executions to set an example
of those who would not convert were held and
thousands of people were killed. For the next forty
years, (1950 1990) the Communist government
proceeded to tax the wealthy city of Shanghai to
support the new government far more then it was
able to pay. As a result, Shanghai infrastructure and
public services suffered greatly. Many of the foreign
companies decided to move to Hong Kong and
Shanghai lost its place as an economic powerhouse.
After the hostile takeover many businesses had
moved to other cities.
New leadership in the Communist government
in 1992 brought economic stability to Shanghai as
taxes were reduced and the new government
encouraged both domestic and foreign investment.
Most importantly, they chose to promote Shanghai as
being the economic center of East Asia and the entry
point to the rest of China. Shanghai has grown
economically from 9- 15% each year. Although they
have been through tough times, Shanghai has proven
to be a very wise investment for several highly
ranked businesses.
About the Environment in Shanghai
In many perspectives Shanghai has changed for the better. The
people of Shanghai have changed Shanghai by adding a countless
number of buildings and constructing one of the largest ports in the
world. The reason for this was because they wanted wealth. Once the
port was built, it attracted many large companies and franchises to
make bases in Shanghai. Today the city of Shanghai has changed from a
small village/ market place to one of the worlds strongest economic
powerhouses that still continues to expand each year.
These changes rst came about during the establishment of
Shanghai as a major city (the time of the foreign merchants). In 1949
the uprising of the city was soon put to a halt due to the strict
communist rule. The economy was slowed down and made fractions of
what it used to for several years. In the year 1980 there was new hope
for Shanghai as the communism was toned down. In Shanghai many
homes, factories and buildings where rising, but the one thing of the past
that really made Shanghai what it is today was the port.
The effects on Shanghai have put a positive turn on the city
bringing companies, investments and major tourism to the growing city.
This also brought many people to live in Shanghai with the large
amounts of job opportunities. Over the years Shanghai has ourished
immensely.
But what I learned the most from this journey through Shanghais
economic build up is that the form of government or how strict it is can
affect and completely
change a city or countys economic outcome today.

Mandarin, Cantonese,

[4]
The People of Shanghai
Shanghai was established as an ofcial city
in the year 1927, but the Chinese inhabited
Shanghai as early as 960 AD. Shanghai was located
on the eastern edge of China, which was practically
on the ocean. This was ideal for a large port, which
was built. This attracted people seeking jobs, trade
and investments, then Shanghai was on its way to
being a major city.
Shanghai now has one of the biggest ports in
Asia handling more than half of Chinas imports and
exports. Shanghai provides several jobs, which
attract many people to Shanghai. It is also known
for its good shopping and cuisine, but one of the best
parts of Shanghai is being able to see both the new
and the old architecture in the same city, which in
most cities do not see. In Shanghai there are several
branches of multinational franchises such as; Walt
Disney, Kraft foods, IBM, and many more. For
companies like these, Shanghai has become their
regional headquarters.
Therefore Shanghai is home to 16,650,000
people. The main languages in Shanghai include
Mandarin, Cantonese and Wu (a Shanghai dialect).
There are many religions practiced in
Shanghai,some of which are Atheism,
Christianity,Taoism, Buddhism and Muslim. What I
found to be very interesting was that all 44 ethnic
groups from China are represented in Shanghai, but
99.53% are of Han ethnicity.

I shall begin the story of my perfect day in Shanghai Museum. It was very interesting, packed with
information and just about the best museum I have visited. Next I went to the Buddha Temple (and several
other temples I could not remember the name of) I had never been to any temples before so I cannot
compare it to other experiences, but I can say that it was amazing, beautiful and unlike anything I had ever
seen before. Then I went to the Fresh Water Pearl Gallery, where I had seen hundreds of pearls, seeing them I
debated on whether or not I should jump into a lake to search for one, but I decided to go shopping instead. I
cant say much about that experience except for WOW! I have never seen that many stores!!
You should pray that you dont ever have to know what stinky tofu smells like and now know how it
got its name, but it doesnt taste bad at all which left me at a loss. I did more shopping but sadly I could not
get to all of the stores. If you go to Shanghai you have to see the acrobats- too cool!! When I rst learned that
the show was 4 hours long I thought I would be bored but I wished the astonishing show would never end! I
ate dinner at MR & MRS Bund (a restaurant on the Bund). I ended my day going to bed at the Okura Garden
Hotel, this concludes my day in Shanghai.

Rhythmic music, it just makes me
want to jump up and dance! In the
past, they made music with
resourceful items! Like Papyrus and
wood. They were highly resourceful in
the past! Instead of wood, bricks and
cement they used limestone and
Granite! If you want you can come to
Egypt with me and see all the

An Anecdote! ! !
Egypt is the Middle East. In
Egypt, there is a wonderful place
called Cairo, its the capital. Ive
been there before! Its a very
beautiful city, no kidding! There are
lots of minarets. And the Pyramids
of Giza; The pyramids of Menkaure,
Khafre and Khufu. It wouldve been
lovely if you rode some Camels with
me! If the climate in the pyramids is
too hot for you, than go chill in a
felucca at the Nile river. Did you
know, the Ni le i s about 6650
Kilometers (4132.118 Miles)? There is
also the Luxor Museum, it has
Tutankhamens Golden mask and the
corpses of the dead wrapped in linen
and canvas. The Baladi bread is the
best bread thats ever been made!
Its very delicious and scrumptious!
Cairo is a very beautiful city, I
would highly recommend for you to
come there!

SHANGHAI
THE CITY OF THE FUTURE...
Shanghai is like a Swiss army knife; it may not be
big but it has anything a person could need. You may
wonder; what is all that Shanghai has to offer? Could
it be an ideal home? My answer is YES! If you havent
noticed Shanghai is full of great job opportunities and
the same for education too, there is sight seeing,
shopping, and interesting cuisine. Thus making
Shanghai home to 16,650,000 people. Today the city of
Shanghai has changed from a small village/ market
place to one of the worlds strongest economic
powerhouses that still continues to grow rapidly each
year. This proves that although they have been
through tough times, Shanghai has proven to be a very
wise investment for several highly ranked
businesses. If you are in search of a new home or
country to invest in, Shanghai is the place to be. So
join me, and travel through Shanghai and its past to
nd your future.

Things Not To Miss in Shanghai
If you ever go to Shanghai, here are some things you
should do. For activities you should denitely try to watch a
show put on by the Chinese acrobats extraordinary tricks and
great over all. If you like history and ancient artifacts the
Shanghai Museum will suit you perfectly. Try visiting some of the
temples in Shanghai, they are super cool and nobody can miss
them, some of the best temples to visit are; The Jade Buddha
Temple, Longhua Temple, Sing An Temple, and lastly the
Confucius Temple.
Some great restaurants are; M on the Bund that has
western, modern European and Chinese food, Ye Shanghai
Restaurant- featuring various kinds of Chinese cuisine, Lost
Heaven with spicy Chinese food. There are several other great
restaurants.
When you go to Shanghai you are going to need to stay at
a hotel. I recommend; the Fairmont Peace Hotel, The ST Regis
Shanghai, The Four Seasons Shanghai, and The Westin Shanghai.

Fun
Fact!!
Mandarin, Cantonese,
and a Shanghai dialect
called Wu are the most
common languages
in Shanghai.
[4]
The People of Shanghai
Shanghai was established as an ofcial city
in the year 1927, but the Chinese inhabited
Shanghai as early as 960 AD. Shanghai was located
on the eastern edge of China, which was practically
on the ocean. This was ideal for a large port, which
was built. This attracted people seeking jobs, trade
and investments, then Shanghai was on its way to
being a major city.
Shanghai now has one of the biggest ports in
Asia handling more than half of Chinas imports and
exports. Shanghai provides several jobs, which
attract many people to Shanghai. It is also known
for its good shopping and cuisine, but one of the best
parts of Shanghai is being able to see both the new
and the old architecture in the same city, which in
most cities do not see. In Shanghai there are several
branches of multinational franchises such as; Walt
Disney, Kraft foods, IBM, and many more. For
companies like these, Shanghai has become their
regional headquarters.
Therefore Shanghai is home to 16,650,000
people. The main languages in Shanghai include
Mandarin, Cantonese and Wu (a Shanghai dialect).
There are many religions practiced in
Shanghai,some of which are Atheism,
Christianity,Taoism, Buddhism and Muslim. What I
found to be very interesting was that all 44 ethnic
groups from China are represented in Shanghai, but
99.53% are of Han ethnicity.
