! Anecdot
Beijing is one of the most remarkable
cities Ive ever been to. It is a very busy and
modern place. I love to go sightseeing there.
The Forbidden City is my preferred place to
visit in Beijing. The marvelous Forbidden City is
the largest and the greatest preserved imperial
palace complex in the world. It has 9,999
rooms you could get lost in, which explains
how the Forbidden City became one of the
main tourist attractions in Beijing. Over a
period of ve centuries, this palace operated as
the governmental center of the country. One of
the reasons why I favor the Forbidden City is
because I had a pleasant experience when I
went there. When you enter the Forbidden City
and look at the fabulous rooms, you will feel
like leaving your native city behind and
transferring to Beijing. It is easy to imagine
ones self living in luxury in one of the elegant
rooms of the palace. How pleasant would it be
to live in a palace with butlers at your service?
Unfortunately, you cant live in the Forbidden
City. It is just one enormous museum so
attractive that you are guaranteed to fall in love
with.

The Celestial City
Beijing is like the brightest star on a clear
and cloudless night, easily standing out from
the millions of others twinkling around it.
Beijing did use to be known as the The
Celestial City for its perfect blend of
infrastructure, trade, arts and culture. However,
as the star that it is, the intensity of its
brightness changes with time. Due to the
exceedingly rapid industrialization, various
negative consequences have followed. As of
the present, the city has a population of 19.6
million. They came to this city from several
different countries to add to the brilliance of
this star. Only a small number of cities in the
world have served as lengthily as the political
center of an area as immense. It is one of the
Four Great Ancient Capitals of The Peoples
Republic of China. It has also been the heart of
Chinas history for centuries and there is barely
a major building of any age in Beijing that does
not have at least some national historical
signicance. The city is also the second largest
city in China today. Can you ever even imagine
Beijing as a quiet provincial city much like a
dimly lit star? At present, no one would think to
describe it as a provincial city but Beijing was
actually a small shing province in the past.
Today, you will nd numerous attractions in
Beijing, both old and new. Visit Beijing and
explore this luminary with me!
! !
Impact of the Past on the Present
The city of Beijing, in China, has a long
and rich history that goes back over 3,000
years. Beijing for centuries was the capital of
the ancient states of Ji and Yan before the
fusion of China in 221 BC by their First
Emperor Qin Shi Huang. For the rst millennia
of imperial rule, Beijing was only a provincial
city in northern China. Its stature grew most
from the 10th to the 13th centuries when the
nomadic Khitan and Jurchen peoples from the
steppes expanded southward, and made the
city a capital of the Liao and Jin dynasties.
In the early 1900s, Beijing used to be a
city with a mixed form of government:
nationalism and communism. Everything
changed after Mao became the Chinese
communist leader and founded the Peoples
Republic of China. Mao Ze Dong, Chinas most
dominant communist leader, had chased out
the Japanese and other possible threats to
Chinas future. He was responsible for the
disastrous policies of the Great Leap
Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
The Great Leap Forward of the People's
Republic of China was an economic and
social campaign, reected in the decision of
plans from 1958 to 1961. It intended to use
China's massive population to rapidly
transform the country from agricultural
economy to a communist state through the
course of swift industrialization, and
collectivization. Mao Ze Dong led the
movement and strengthens it after being
informed of the impending disaster from grain
shortages. However, The Great Leap policy
ended in calamity, resulting in excess deaths
to the millions leading Mao to initiate another
policy called the Cultural Revolution in 1966.
The Cultural Revolution was a
sociopolitical movement that occurred from
1966 to the year 1976. The goal was to
strengthen socialism in China by removing
capitalist, traditional and cultural elements
from Chinese society, and imposing Maos
grand plans for it. This revolution stilled the
country and strongly affected it both
economically and socially. It resulted in
widespread dividing struggles in all walks of
life. After Mao's death in 1976, reformers led
by Deng Xiaoping gained prominence. Most of
the Maoist reforms associated with the Cultural
Revolution were abandoned by 1978. The
Cultural Revolution has been ofcially viewed
as an infamous phenomenon ever since.
!
It would be very difcult to nd a culture
that has experienced as much culture shock in
60 years as has China. However, it has already
overcome most of the shock and the results
have been surprisingly positive. China has now
become the world's fastest-growing major
economy. As of 2012, it is the world's second-
largest economy, after the United States, by
both minimal GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
and purchasing power. Also, China is the
world's largest exporter and second-largest
importer of goods. China is a recognized
nuclear weapons state and has the world's
largest standing army with everything centered
in Beijing. For much of China's population,
living standards have seen extremely large
improvements, and freedom continues to
expand, but political controls remain tight and
rural areas are still poor.
Population Demographics
Beijing started developing 700,000 years
ago. Famous for being where the Peking man
lived in the beginning, it started to gain notice
during the Shang Dynasty when it was chosen
as its capital city. It is located in Northeast
China, bordered by the Yellow Sea. Due to its
accessible location, it slowly became an
outstanding trading center of China.
Beijing became a city 3,000 years ago
(2012 is the 3057th year of Beijing). It was
favored by the Liao, Jin Yuan, Ming and Qing
Dynasties of the past and is still continually
being developed today. In the past, people
came to Beijing mainly because of trading.
Today, people mostly pass through Beijing
because it has become a major transportation
hub with Chinas railway network and its main
roads leading to all parts of China.
There are now many different religions in
this city. The main religions are Buddhism,
Taoism, and Confucianism. However, Taoism is
the only religion native to Beijing.
Beijing is presently also the political,
educational and cultural center of The Peoples
Republic of China. Though these are not the
only reasons, people also go to Beijing
because of work and business opportunities.
The population there at present is
approximately, 19.6 million with the major
nationalities represented being Han Chinese.
Manchu, Hui, Mongol and South Koreans are
the minorities in the city. Today, major
industries and businesses in Beijing include the
nance and automobile industries, with these
two currently being its most important.
Today people are said to choose to live in
Beijing mainly because of educational and
business opportunities. There, they can
choose to live very cheaply and get a rich
cultural experience on extremely little money
(5000yuan). Currently, Beijing is a multinational
city, as well as a major city of many different
business opportunities open for all.
[3]
Beijings Environment
Beijing started out as a quiet provincial
city in Northern China. Industrialization began
in the 1950s lasting until around the mid to late
1970s. American companies then began
pouring into the city because of the abundance
of cheap labor and the careless environmental
laws.
Today, Beijing holds no resemblance to its
quiet past. No one would ever think to
describe it as a provincial city. It continues to
grow as the center of China. However, due to
the exceedingly rapid industrialization, various
negative consequences have come up. First,
the land area of dry desert is increasing. It is
eating up usable and productive land. Next, air
pollution has become a major problem. The
presence of numerous factories and an
increasing population are causing much harm.
Lastly, the increase of both surface and ocean
temperatures have increased the occurrence of
climate-related disasters such as droughts and
oods. These are current problems nonexistent
in early Beijing. Although it is popularly known
as the major city of business today, its
environment is also continuing to change
negatively as the city is developing.

Life in Seoul
All of North Korea is a jail one wise man said
and that noble man was named Kim Y. Sam. The
capital city of South Korea, Seoul, became more
popular and so the government of South Korea
improved Seoul with new landmarks, unlike
North Korea, a miserable and cruel part of Korea.
20% of South Korea belongs to Seoul, 9,895,000
out of 48,754,657. They came to Seoul from North
Korea because they were terried.
Many Koreans thought they could use
the land to start a new building and
take advantage of it. Eventually they
did take advantage of it with new
structures and houses. Seoul is a
strong place like Chuck Norris that
traps you and never ever lets you go.

Anecdote
At Seoul there is a wonderful place called
Everland; where animals scratch and can be seen
outside your bus window. Everland is the major
theme park in South Korea. Eveland includes tons
of different rides, facilities, and has three distinct
themes: Festival World, Caribbean Bay, and Speed
Way. Caribbean Bay is a water park with water
slides and swimming pools with articial waves
they are just like normal waves that you can nd in
beaches. In an addition, it has a safari zoo, where
you can observe animals in their habitats in a
caged bus like when animals are caged but this
time you are and they are at their homes. Snow
sleds are also added in Everland with two
mountains to entertain families during
the winter. By the time you
leave you would
probably
reserve for

consequences of
your non-stop
annoyance by
your children.
Impact of the Past on the Present
Seoul was not the capital of South Korea because there was no South Korea or North Korea; it was a single country, so
Seoul wasnt as popular or advance today because it as not the capital; but with a threat from North Korea, many are
feared to go near it, because they may assault again. Seoul, before the Korean War was developing city, its still is, but
with more wonderful and ancient things.
Then everything changed when the Korean War started. China helped North Korea and the U.S. helped South Korea. It
started when China became communist, and the U.S. feared that communism would spread or start a domino effect.
North Korea wanted to be communist but South Korea wanted to be a democracy, creating enmity (a feeling of hostile
or killing each other).
The U.S. wanted to split Korea: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea disagreed but South Korea agreed so North
Korea took the rst attack with a nuclear bomb, because they wanted Korea to be communist. Then the Korean War
started, so after a long battle during the Cold War (1945-1991) they divided Korea, thus North Korea and South Korea
were born.
As a result, the capital city of South Korea is now Seoul, a beautiful city with worthy landmarks unlike North Korea, a
sad and cruel part of Korea. Families and relative were divided when they divided Korea. China and America has a
strong feeling of enmity. Many landmarks were destroyed but were recovered after a while. A nuclear owned by North
Korea threats U.S and South Korea. North Korea and South Korea remain even more rivals, and many fear to go
anywhere near North Korea. When the capital of South Korea, Seoul, it became more popular and so the Government of
South Korea improved Seoul with new landmarks, currency, new laws, cleaner property, new transportation, and more!

Population
The capital of South Korea, Seoul was founded in 1394 by Gen, Yi Song-gye the founder of
Choson Dynasty. It was located at East Asia, in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula near
the Yellow River. This location helped Seoul for importing, water, and trading with other
cities/countries.
In the past, people came to Seoul because
there was more land and other natural
resources like water, oil, and coal. Today
many people would like to come to Seoul
to nd job offers like teachers, as a
secretary and vice president of a fashion
company (if you have what it takes);
resources like coal and lead for further
purposes, and nally men must server at
least two years in the military which
makes it safer for anyone who comes
when/if there is a War.
20% of South Korea belongs to Seoul,
9,895,000 out of 48,754,657. People who
live in Seoul are 26.3% Christian, 23.2% Buddhist, 1.3% other, and 49.3% none. Age
structure; under 19 26.4%, 20-50 64.7%, 60+ 8.9%.Languages: Korean and English. There is
only one major nationality in Seoul, which is Korean. The major industries and businesses are
Ace chemical, Asiana Airlines, BC cards, Daelim, other which makes electronics,
telecommunications, automobile, chemicals, ship building, etc.
Today people choose to live in Seoul due to safety, job offers, resources, easy trade, faster
transport, and because they had to get more advance because there are more people in the city.
Houses are huger than you think with an affordable price! Spas with nest back massage and
relaxation; restaurant with the best food you like, and a lot of famous singers/actors/models
are there like Ji-hyun and John Cho. Therefore Seoul is now one of the nest cities in the
country/world, making it a world attraction with its landmarks and its beautiful cravings in
and out of the landmark, like the Pongdaemun Gate.

Environment
! After the Korean War, the
people in Seoul had to adapt and
change to their new landscape to
survive or to x the landscape but
in some times they could not.
Many Koreans thought they could
use the land to start a new
buildings and take advantage of
it. Seoul before was a bunch of
old building, now Seoul has tall
building and skyscrapers.
The landscape in Seoul was
changed by the Korean War
between 1950-1953, when North
Korea bombed South Korea; their
rst objective was to bomb Seoul.
When tall buildings (that where
barely made) where hit, chunks of
the building collapsed and the
building would fall and create
craters.
Seouls mountains are
smaller thanks to the bombs. The
percent of air and water pollution
increased with nuclear bomb and
debris all over. Also during the
Korean War the government
intended to spend 1.1 million for
safety reasons like weapons, etc;
which creates air pollution, which
relates to the Story of Stuff. This
all happened because of the
Korean War. Today Seoul is now
lled with giant buildings as far
as you can see, with the
mountains still shorter. Old and
revived buildings are now
monuments.

The
changing
to Sydney's
landscape
Sydney used to be populated by
Aborigines who are Australian
natives. But then the Europeans
arrived in 1788. Their rst plan was
to make a convict settlement, which
was founded by Arthur Philip.
Between 1830-1840 urban
development started. Scottish
ofcer Lachlan Macquarie helped
out adding schools, hospitals, banks,
etc. Lachlan was becoming Sydneys
ofcial architect.
! In 1932, during the
Depression era, the Harbor bridge
by Jack Lang. This was during the
Depression time, which was an
economic condition where people
have very low nancial
opportunities. The construction of
this has provided employment to
workers so it was nickname Iron
Lung. In1942, WW2 affecting
Sydney, Japanese forces repeatedly
bombed Sydney Harbor, and a few
of the eastern suburbs were
destroyed, and the Japanese were
also able to sink one ferry.
Thankfully the Harbor Bridges life
was spared, it only suffered minimal
damages. The city then was able to
rebuild itself towards the end of
WW2.Though the Sydneys
experience with WW2 remains a
haunting past. Today the Sydney
Harbor Bridge is a historical
landmark in the city. Thanks to
Macquarie, Jack Lang and other
great contributors to Sydney. This
place is now the wealthiest city in
Australia all because of its past.

Impact to past and present
Discover the citys Big bang. From a place urban place populated by our
ancestors, and to being one of the greatest multicultural societies in the world.
Sydney used to be a
place with natives
called Aborigines.
There was an
estimated 4,000 to
8,000 Aborigines who
lived in Sydney. James
Cook a captain sailor
rst discovered them in
1788. The Aborigines
spoke three languages
Dharawal, Darug and
Guringai. Each
Aborigine clan had
their own territories
and their own
resources. Though that
all changed when the
Europeans arrived.
! Europeans
arrived at Jan 26, 1788
their plan for Sydney
was a convict
settlement, and
founded by Arthur
Philip. Also Captain
James Cook made
contact with Aborigine
community called
Gweagal. Europeans
found Sydney cove
and made a colony
there founded by
Arthur Philip. Then
Arthur Philip named
the colony after the
British Home Secretary
Thomas Sydney. And
that is how Sydney got
its name. Today the
Aborigines population
decreased, and
roughly 1000
Aborigines died of the
smallpox back in
1789.The Europeans
also educated
Aborigines Christian
religion, and they did
this by removing them
from their clans.
Sydneys wealth
started when people
found large amounts of
gold and then they
were able to build a
much more richer
society. Without the
discovery gold, Sydney
would not have been
as wealthy and both
attractive as it is today.
" Now, Sydney
then became one of
the most successful
multicultural societies
in the world. It is
multicultural because
Sydney is lled with
English, Scottish, Irish,
and Chinese
immigrants. It has
many immigrants
because of vast wealth
and many businesses
to employ people.
Such jobs are in
manufacturing
companies, health and
community services
like doctors and
nurses, teachers,
bankers, etc. Today,
Sydney is such a
beautiful place with
countless attractions
like the Harbor Bridge,
Opera House, and the
Sydney sh market.
Surely Sydney is a city
not to miss!!
Anecdote
Sydney is one of the most amazing cities I have ever been to.
When I saw the reworks in New Years Eve I saw a real
display!! The re works ew out from the Sydney Harbor
Bridge. And when you look up to sky you would mostly see
sparkles of different colors. Each rework unleashed screams
of awe by the people all around Sydney. Spending New
Years Eve in Sydney was one of the best choices I have ever
made. The cities New Years Eve are fantastic and all, but
Sydneys beach is a competitive match. My most favorite
beach is Bondi Beach it is very sunny and you could easily
feel the soft sand on your feet. The beach is very clear and
clean, and every time I see its beach I would always have a
strong urge to jump in. I have also loved Sydney
architecture. Its designs are mostly colorful and modern, and
they also stand out in many different ways. I wish I had a
house with talented designs of Sydneys architecture. In
conclusion theyre many amazing things in Sydney
sometimes I wonder what good it doesnt do. If I could
describe Sydney Id say it is a remake of a sunny heaven.

My Day at Chadstone
Shopping Center
Melbourne Australia is a great city to go
to especially because of their big
shopping centers, fantastic landmarks to
see and visit. There are heaps of
shopping centers but in my opinion the
best is chadstone shopping center it has
great shops within l ike Marks &
Spencers, Target, Pumpkin Patch and
Lots of food stores.
I always walk around chadstone and
think Im in heaven I remember once
when I was there I was walking around
and saw a really nice T-shirt in the
window so I went in and bought it. Then
I felt a bit hungry so I went to the food
court and got a hot dog at donut king, I
also had a donut that looked like a little
girl it was very funny. After, when I was
nished shopping I went home with a
great big smile on my face making me
think I was going again.
The city of Melbourne, Australia
used to be an undiscovered part of
southeast Australia. An Aboriginal clan,
called the Kulins. Had lived there for over
30,000 years. The Kulins found this was a
great meeting point and a great source of
food and water. It was not until 1801 it
was discovered by a man sailing from New
South Wales named James Grant, when
he entered Port Philip bay.
Then everything changed when a
man called John Batman from Tasmania
went to the same area in southeast
Australia to do some grazing in 1835. He
made an agreement with the Aborigines
to rent a large area of land for grazing, in
return for food, our, blankets and clothes.
This area was to later become the
founding site of Melbourne. In 1836 the
rst government block was built and was
declared the capital of the Port Philip
district. In 1838 Melbourne was declared
a legal port and administration center and
this greatly increased the number of
people moving there. The government of
New South Wales said that John Batman
could not rent the land from the
Aboriginals, as it was the property of the
Crown of the Commonwealth. They
cancelled the rent agreement between
John Batman and the aboriginals, but let
the white settlers stay there in their new
town.

Melbourne a city in 25 June 1847, it was
the beginning of Melbourne becoming
the largest city in Australia, and the
temporary capital city. Many years later
the capital city was transferred to
Canberra in New South Wales. As
Melbourne expanded, the aboriginals
were forced further off their land, losing
their normal way of life. At one point of
time Melbourne was the second largest
city in the world, behind London,
England. Melbourne had a gold rush from
1850 to the 1870s, which helped it to
grow at a fast rate and to make the people
wealthier.

Before the big city of Melbourne
was formed, it was just bush land. But in
a period of just over two hundred years it
has grown with many buildings, roads
and bridges being built. More people
arrived as the city grew, and their way of
living grew with the changes that were
getting made. People from overseas
moved to Melbourne and gave it a
multicultural mix.
Melbourne before the 1880s was
different because there were not many
buildings and not enough work for
people. The area of Melbourne around
the port had a lot of vacant land and the
buildings were in poor condition. Picture
1 shows the area around Melbourne Port
in 1880. There were no bridges, few
roads and a lot of smoke from factories.
The landscape changed, as bridges
and high-rise buildings were built to form
more ofces and homes. These changes
occurred around the 1880s and became
the start of Melbourne becoming a large
international city.
How is Melbourne different today?
Well there are more buildings, many
more roads, large bridges linking the
different sides of the port and a big
entertainment area located around the
doc k ar e a. The f ac t or i e s have
disappeared and been replaced by
houses. There are more living spaces and
more places for people to work as
buildings are becoming larger. There is
also more transport being used like trams,
buses and cars.
The most informative thing I learnt
was that lots of buildings have been
renovated over the years, and that
buildings are no longer getting built in
the one place. Instead, they are spreading
out all over the city and into surrounding
suburbs and new housing developments.
As a result of all the people moving to
Melbourne from overseas, different
suburbs have developed a unique culture.

Hey, are you up for some adventure in Ho Chi Minh
City? Well I went there last weekend, and let me
tell you it was a blast of metaphoric air! One of
the best places in my opinion are the C Chi

were also used as supply routes. The military
troops sometimes had to stay in the tunnels for a
massive amount of time; they might even have had
to live there!

Environment
In the 15th century,
most of Saigon was
swamps, marshes, and
thick forests. People
reclaimed the land for
agricultural purposes.
The French came and
tried to turn Saigon into
the Pearl of the Far
East. The French built
western style buildings
and French villas. In the
midst of the war Saigon
was bombed. Even today
they have wide
boulevards and French
architecture. For the last
10 years they are
developing new urban
centers. They needed
farmland to grow food
and later space for the
growing population. It
didnt have much land. In
the early 1700s they
reclaimed agricultural
land. The affect is that
they gained more land
rst for agriculture then
for the city.

and slums. Hong Kong today is very different from its past. The outstanding
economics of the city has attracted many to establish their homesteads there. As a

The Hong Kong Flag
A STORY OF HONG KONG + TOP 10 ATTRACTIONS
It was just another day for me, as a Hong Kong citizen. I thrown my wet overcoat sprinkled with thousands of drops of rain
onto the chair and started typing furiously on the keyboard as if playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the piano. I sipped my
coffee in the middle of a business email report for my ever-demanding and ill-tempered boss. Searching through the sea
of papers, I nally accomplished my objective. I reached my hand into that enormous growing mound of papers. It was
10:25 p.m. The clocks rhythmic ticking made me think I was trying to deactivate dynamite that was going to crash my
career otherwise. Tick, tock, tick, tock it went. The frantic clattering of a keyboard accompanied the time bomb. The due
was only a few hours away and so was a nerve-racking telephone call from my anxious boss asking if I nished my work.
Once the clock hits 12:00 am. and Im still typing erratically, I m dead. Maintaining Hong Kongs number one harbor,
Victoria Harbor, is hard work. Most of the employees work until 2 a.m. Then they would amble out of the skyscraper onto
the road with with their dark brown suitcases, sleepy eyes and coffee. My ngers complained as I typed each word and
my brain refused the zigzagging charts and countless numbers. It was the way in Hong Kong. People had things to do as
always. Day and night, cars zoom across roads, subway trains dash on rails, and planes slice through the clouds. 11:50
pm. The clocks ticks were urgent. Tick, tock, tick tock. My eyes strained, looking at the charts and emails. 12:00 a.m.
now. I nally nished my last word and clicked the send button. Riiinnnnggg! The telephone rang. I picked it up.
Employee, did you send me the email yet? Yes sir. My voice quivered. Whats the matter, eh? You get a promotion!
Then he hung up the phone.
" I chuckled as I placed the telephone on the table, back to where it belonged. Hong Kong is always promising and
with wonderful opportunities everywhere. This graceful city is a extravagance of opportunities, where even the solemn
orphans may become a businessman in a glorious skyscraper. And so, I walked home, carrying a suitcase in one hand
and a umbrella in the other.
This
is Hong Kong, a
city that never
sleeps.
1. Victoria Harbor:
Victoria Harbor is one of the worlds busiest harbors. Ships rush to and fro, and the cranes never rest. Also, at precisely 8
pm, the A Symphony of Lights light show begins. Tourists may take a ride on the iconic Star Ferry that sails around the lights
show, which involves buildings near Victoria Harbor. Beautiful scenery, Id say. The marvelous experience cannot be
described. Different-colored lights shoot up into the sky and sway left and right, front and back. The hidden beauty of Hong
Kong is thus revealed to the naked eye.A Star Ferry sits by Hong Kong as the lights illuminate the city and dramatically
impact the tourists mind.
2. The Peak:
The Peak is superior. It leads the tourism industries and attractions, which follow it humbly and eagerly. You must take
the local tram to The Peak After the tram ride, you will step onto a viewing platform, where a miraculous view of Hong Kong
would be discovered.

Top 10 Tourist Attractions
Hong Kong used to be a small group of solitary and depressed shing villages of the Qing Dynasty (1635-1911) in China.
The former Hong Kong was a place where shermen cast their nets and menacing pirates robbed the innocent. It was a
colony of Britain from 1842 to 1997 and returned to China on July 1, 1997 as a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The
marvelous Hong Kong today truly witnessed drastic changes in its history.
! Before 1842, Hong Kong was little more than a backwater of around 20 villages and slums when the British East
India Company sent its rst ship to Hong Kong in 1685 as an attempt to begin trade with China. The attempt was
successful, but Britain was in short supply of items China would be interested in to trade, so, the British traded opium, a
type of illegal drug, for the precious silver of the Chinese. When the Qing Dynasty government realized that its people
were getting addicted to opium and the humongous supply of silver China had was rapidly vanishing, the Qing Dynasty
stopped all trade with Britain. The British then declared war on China as a response to the trade embargo. This war was
called the Opium War (1839-1842). The Chinese lost the war, and was forced to hand over Hong Kong to the British for
99 years.
! During the British colonization, Hong Kong grew into a major free port of trade and its economy grew too. It
gained importance, for it was a huge trading center between mainland China and Europe. In the early 1980s, Chinese
government requested the British to return Hong Kong to China. Negotiations about Hong Kongs future between the two
countries lasted for almost 15 years. Den Xiaoping, a skilled Chinese leader guided the Chinese side in the negotiations.
Finally, the negotiations concluded and the British agreed to hand over Hong Kong to China. The British ag lowered as
the Chinese ag rose in Hong Kong on July 1, 1997. After the reunion with China, Hong Kong maintains its capitalist
status while mainland China is socialist. This is called One Country, Two Systems.
! Hong Kong was dramatically changed by its history. Many Europeans migrated to Hong Kong with their cultures
during the British colonization period of Hong Kong. After World War II, the city welcomed a huge amount of mainland
Chinese along with the ambulant supply of labor from the Chinese migrants. With the unmatchable labor, Hong Kong
started to invest more money in its infrastructure and business. During and after the British rule, companies and banks
moved into Hong Kong and strived the local economy and international trade. Lastly, the British and Chinese
governments cooperated well mostly in the negotiations in the late 1990s generally.
! As a result, the city of Hong Kong is now a, or possibly the regional and global trade center of China. The 2012
Hong Kong is now the topnotch city where skyscrapers rocket to the stars and a major nancial center where banks ood
the streets, cherishing millions and billions of dollars in its vaults. Business in Hong
! Kong strives in an outstanding environment, which is supported mainly by Hong Kongs fair and good rule of law.
The citys economy has been rapidly booming too. The GDP in 2010 reached $225 billion (dollars) with a per capita of
$45,900 (dollars). Lastly, Hong Kong enjoys a wide range of cultural diversity.
HONG KONG HISTORY. THE WORK OF A NATION.
Hong Kong Today. Thanks to its History.
THE POPULATION OF HONG KONG
Before 1842, Hong Kong was nothing more than a gloomy shing village. People would rarely go to Hong Kong, for it
was small and dangerous. The handful of people that went to Hong Kong would either sh or rob and raid the other
shermen. The villagers back then did not realize the value of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is near Indonesia, the
Philippines, and a collection of other islands, meaning that trade could begin easily with other countries. China could
trade their gold and silver for spices and other exotic items found in tropical areas. Join me, and lets explore the
population-related information about Hong Kong, a city located at 22 degrees North and 114 degrees East.
" Hong Kong has guided its citizens to success in the world of business with marvelous job opportunities.
Education is a valued job in the society for those willing to pass on their knowledge for the success of future
generations. Since Hong Kong depends on its tourism industry as a major source of income, lots of Hong Kong
citizens are eager to welcome foreigners to the wonderful Hong Kong as their jobs. The urbanized Hong Kong is to be
much thanked for the construction eld of job opportunities and the enthusiastic workers and architecture specialists.
Exporting and importing is, undoubtedly, the greatest and most skillfully managed job for businessmen,
businesswomen, and workers. It is this job, so professional and natural to Hong Kong citizens, that has made Hong
Kong Asias World City, Hong Kongs motto, and poured money into the GDP sack. Manufacturing is also one of
the most inuential and attractive jobs for young people. Without rapid manufacturing of products, how may Hong Kong
establish its advanced trading in the depth of the busy harbors? The governmental organizations may attract the more
people to help the country. These governmental and political jobs are fantastic, but they are also the most stressful and
demanding job opportunities Hong Kong has in store.
" Although Hong Kong does not hold much resources, the citys geography represents a powerful resource.
Hong Kong is surrounded by extremely deep water. Thus, this creates a natural structure for harbors, which Hong
Kong is dependent on primarily. Hong Kong has also established successful multinational companies, like China
Solutions.
" China Solutions is a company introducing and aiding foreign companies that have established a branch of
business in Hong Kong. The company educates other companies about Hong Kongs business basics and patterns,
stock market status, environment, and local interests. China Solutions has also established branch companies in other
part of Asia and some parts of North America, which has made it a multi-national company.
" Business and job opportunities are important reasons why people come to Hong Kong. But most businessmen
and women rush to Hong Kong to scufe about the complex business plans, and back to their own countries the next
day. Most people that have migrated to Hong Kong to live there are attracted not only by the business opportunities,
but also by the free business environment. Since the city is a SAR (Special Administrative Region), it enjoys a high
degree of autonomy and economic freedom. Families from mainland China may migrate to Hong Kong to pursue their
goals and, at the same time, serve their country rightfully.
" Also, people in Hong Kong can also enjoy wonderful views from skyscrapers, like sunsets, busy harbors, and
green mountains. Safety is another major reason why people would settle their families in Hong Kong. Being one of the
top 5 safest big cities in the world, Hong Kong only experiences minor drug issues, and this problem is being resolved
by the police.
" Hong Kongs transportation system is among the worlds most advanced. The constant stream of cars under
the night sky is a symbol of Hong Kongs great transportation. A well-organized army of taxis provide convenience and
services to passengers. Planes zip overhead, and ships propel themselves through the blue ocean. Hong Kongs
advanced lming has made it a movie city like Hollywood. Many people may admire the city for that and would love a
movie as a relief from the days work. Last but not the least, Hong Kong is a clean and well-maintained city.
" As a result, the city of Hong Kong is home to 7,722,508 citizens as of July 2011. 95% of Hong Kongs
population are hard-working Chinese building the city. 1.6% are Filipinos. 1.3% are Indonesians. 2.1% are from other
countries including USA, Canada, Japan.
These foreigners have come to Hong Kong for various reasons, but they all work hard for a common cause of making
Hong Kong an even better place.
" Many religions co-exist in Hong Kong. 66.13% of Hong Kong citizens are Buddhists. 22.05% are believers of
their own consciences and are non-religious. 10.05% are Christian. 1.5% are Muslim, and 0.25% are Hindu. Hong
Kong also hosts a variety of languages. In Hong Kong, 90.8% of the people speak Cantonese, a Chinese dialect, but
only 0.9% is able to speak Mandarin. 5.5% speak other languages from foreign nations. Behold, Hong Kong, a realm
of success and glory.
Hong Kongs original landscape was never drastically changed before 1842. Small clearing were made
only where the few shing villages are located. Natures mountains and hills in Hong Kong prevailed
despite the iron mining industry, which was poorly maintained. Small shing boats oated on the sea.
Fishing was the only source of income that beneted Hong Kong. There were also small amounts of iron
in the depth of the mountains. The mining was not a full scale resource extraction, it was a small-scale
one. After the British colonization of Hong Kong in 1842, the foreigners adapted to the environment
because of the useful geography. The sea surrounding Hong Kong was deep. The British discovered that
this geography of Hong Kong was extremely good for harbors and made lots of them.
" When the British colonized Hong Kong, they started heavy construction as their rst major attempt
to develop Hong Kong. The original villages collapsed and gave way to large European style buildings.
The British government hurried the construction of Hong Kong until when no space is left for any further
urbanization. And thus, the destruction of mountains began. Dynamite shook the landscape. The
mountains were attened. Another major construction project started to make Hong Kong even bigger and
more luxurious. Huge harbors were built for trade. The undeveloped primitive houses were turned into
grand apartments of luxury. When development space nally ran out, reclaimed land was the solution. The
British made land and hurried off erratically into the construction battleeld once again. From 1842-1940,
this development took place. Luckily, World War II did not ruin the city completely, but life standards for the
citizens were spoiling. After World War II, the city was rebuilt. More complicated skyscrapers were built
from 1945-1997. The British had launched its third major construction of the city. Hong Kong grew rapidly.
The people were proud, the government was proud, the city was proud. After the British colonization end
in 1997, Hong Kong continued to develop rapidly in the hands of the Chinese. The inexhaustible supply of
labor from China was a key reason of Hong Kongs success. More shining skyscrapers were built after
1997. The harbors were modern. Victoria Harbor is one of the most beautiful harbors today. It had the
deepest water in Hong Kong and was humongous. The harbor was so inuential that it became a tourist
attraction too. Reclaimed land is popular in Hong Kong today as a solution to minimal land. Many
homeless and poor people were given opportunities to move into skyscrapers. Poverty in Hong Kong was
weakening. More and more slums turned into urbanized areas. Development in Hong Kong continues
consistently. Hong Kong has a bright future ahead.

Environment
These pictures show how
people made a big changed in
landscape and environment of
Islamabad in the past decades.
BEFORE - Islamabads natural
environment was preserved. It
was one of the earliest
settlements for human in Asia.
There were lots of gardens, no
roads and no lights. It was just a
plain land area with a population
of 100,000. But the location of
this place is almost at the centre
of Pakistan. In 1960, they started
the construction of this city as it
replaces Karachi as the capital of
the country.
They were renovated the
Parliament House. They did this
on the orders of the Speaker and
Prime Minister. They started
building monuments and road
construction for better access to
the place. They divided it into
different sector and zone.
AFTER - The city is now home

Population
Islamabad was
established in 1960 by
president Ayub Khan. This
city is very accessible to all
parts of Pakistan, so it was
decided to make this city as
Pakistans capital instead of
Karachi. It is located in the
Pothohar Plateau in the
northern part of Pakistan, at
the edge of the Himalayas.
An estimated number of
1251905 people live in this
city. The ethnic groups are
Pashtun 15.42%, Sindhi
14.1, Sariaki 8.38%,
Muhajirs 7.56%, Balochi
3.57%, Puntajabubi 44.68%,
others 6.28%. Urdu is their
ofcial language. The main
religions are 95% Muslim
and 5% are Christian.
In 2011 the population
increased to 1.7 million, and
this is mainly because
people are transferring to
this city looking for better
opportunities. There are lots
of job opportunities in this
city because of the different
businesses and
establishments. Most of the
events like social, diplomatic
and summits are held in this
city.
Persuasive Piece
Did you know that Islamabad is
called the city of peace? This city was
surrounded by lush greens, clean water
and pollution free with only few people
living in it. The construction of this city
started 1960, as it replaced Karachi,
which was until that time the capital of
the country. There is still a lot of
greenery, but the economic growth is
much visible now. Islamabad had
developed a lot of shopping malls, nice
hotels, architectural mosque and
government ofces. This place is a very
big tourist attraction. Come and see the
beauty of Islamabad!

Past to present
Islamabad was not the first capital
city of Pakistan. It is located north
west of Lahore and west of
Afghani st an. Thi s ci t y was
pollution free with only few
people living in it and surrounded
by lush greens, had clean water
and. It became capital of Pakistan
in 1960.
In 1947, the first capital city of
independent country was Karachi.
Karachi is located at the end of the
country and this makes it more
vulnerable for attacks from the
Arabian Sea. Then in 1960 the
president Ayub Khan decided that
the capital will be moved to newly
build city, Islamabad, because it is
located in the centre of the
Pakistan and it is more accessible
from all parts of the country
compared to Karachi, and it was
closer to the army. In 1960 the
development and construction of
the city started. There were new
roads, buildings, monuments and
government offices added to the
city. Some of the most popular
places in Islamabad are Faisal
Mosque, Serena Hotel, parliament
house and Pakistan Monument.
The modern Islamabad now
provides more job opportunities to
p e o p l e . Mo r e b u s i n e s s
establishments are seen in the city.
The city also hosted several large
events for the Asian region, like
the south Asian Association for
Regional Cooperation summit and
Sports activities, like 2004 South
Asian games, which was held in
Jinnah Sports Stadium.

Traveling through Shanghais past and looking towards its future...
By1936 Shanghai was one of the largest cities
in the world and was the biggest nancial city in
Eastern Asia with a population of 3 million including
35,000 foreigners. These foreigners helped make
Shanghai a well developed city and brought trade,
nance and investments to the new and growing city.
The city was practically split in half, Chinese in the
east and westerners in the west of Shanghai.
Shanghai was responsible for half of all the imports
and exports of goods in China. It was also the only city
in China that was run by merchants and not warlords.
Shanghai was very successful and was referred to as
the Paris of the East, the New York of the West. As
early as 1921, thoughts started to change, when a
group of philosophers disagreed with the traditional
Chinese values and expressed it by writing books that
they handed out to the public. This started the move
towards Communism as many people thought it
would be a better form of government with people
being more equal in their places in life rather then
separated by the strict traditional structures of
Chinese society and the lawless rule of warlords. On
October 1
st,
1949 Mao Zedong (the leader of China)
declared that the PRC (Peoples Republic of China)
would now be a Communist country. This change in
the form of government was followed by much
violence as the new Communist Party had to force
much of the Chinese population to conform to the new
ideology. Although the Communist government
claimed that the country had a peaceful transition
into Communism, mass executions to set an example
of those who would not convert were held and
thousands of people were killed. For the next forty
years, (1950 1990) the Communist government
proceeded to tax the wealthy city of Shanghai to
support the new government far more then it was
able to pay. As a result, Shanghai infrastructure and
public services suffered greatly. Many of the foreign
companies decided to move to Hong Kong and
Shanghai lost its place as an economic powerhouse.
After the hostile takeover many businesses had
moved to other cities.
New leadership in the Communist government
in 1992 brought economic stability to Shanghai as
taxes were reduced and the new government
encouraged both domestic and foreign investment.
Most importantly, they chose to promote Shanghai as
being the economic center of East Asia and the entry
point to the rest of China. Shanghai has grown
economically from 9- 15% each year. Although they
have been through tough times, Shanghai has proven
to be a very wise investment for several highly
ranked businesses.
About the Environment in Shanghai
In many perspectives Shanghai has changed for the better. The
people of Shanghai have changed Shanghai by adding a countless
number of buildings and constructing one of the largest ports in the
world. The reason for this was because they wanted wealth. Once the
port was built, it attracted many large companies and franchises to
make bases in Shanghai. Today the city of Shanghai has changed from a
small village/ market place to one of the worlds strongest economic
powerhouses that still continues to expand each year.
These changes rst came about during the establishment of
Shanghai as a major city (the time of the foreign merchants). In 1949
the uprising of the city was soon put to a halt due to the strict
communist rule. The economy was slowed down and made fractions of
what it used to for several years. In the year 1980 there was new hope
for Shanghai as the communism was toned down. In Shanghai many
homes, factories and buildings where rising, but the one thing of the past
that really made Shanghai what it is today was the port.
The effects on Shanghai have put a positive turn on the city
bringing companies, investments and major tourism to the growing city.
This also brought many people to live in Shanghai with the large
amounts of job opportunities. Over the years Shanghai has ourished
immensely.
But what I learned the most from this journey through Shanghais
economic build up is that the form of government or how strict it is can
affect and completely
change a city or countys economic outcome today.

Things Not To Miss in Shanghai
If you ever go to Shanghai, here are some things you
should do. For activities you should denitely try to watch a
show put on by the Chinese acrobats extraordinary tricks and
great over all. If you like history and ancient artifacts the

temples in Shanghai, they are super cool and nobody can miss
them, some of the best temples to visit are; The Jade Buddha
Temple, Longhua Temple, Sing An Temple, and lastly the
Confucius Temple.
Some great restaurants are; M on the Bund that has
western, modern European and Chinese food, Ye Shanghai
Restaurant- featuring various kinds of Chinese cuisine, Lost
Heaven with spicy Chinese food. There are several other great
restaurants.
When you go to Shanghai you are going to need to stay at
a hotel. I recommend; the Fairmont Peace Hotel, The ST Regis
Shanghai, The Four Seasons Shanghai, and The Westin Shanghai.

Fact!!
Mandarin, Cantonese,
and a Shanghai dialect
called Wu are the most
common languages
in Shanghai.
[4]
The People of Shanghai
Shanghai was established as an ofcial city
in the year 1927, but the Chinese inhabited
Shanghai as early as 960 AD. Shanghai was located
on the eastern edge of China, which was practically
on the ocean. This was ideal for a large port, which
was built. This attracted people seeking jobs, trade
and investments, then Shanghai was on its way to
being a major city.
Shanghai now has one of the biggest ports in
Asia handling more than half of Chinas imports and
exports. Shanghai provides several jobs, which
attract many people to Shanghai. It is also known
for its good shopping and cuisine, but one of the best
parts of Shanghai is being able to see both the new
and the old architecture in the same city, which in
most cities do not see. In Shanghai there are several
branches of multinational franchises such as; Walt
Disney, Kraft foods, IBM, and many more. For
companies like these, Shanghai has become their
regional headquarters.
Therefore Shanghai is home to 16,650,000
people. The main languages in Shanghai include
Mandarin, Cantonese and Wu (a Shanghai dialect).
There are many religions practiced in
Shanghai,some of which are Atheism,
Christianity,Taoism, Buddhism and Muslim. What I
found to be very interesting was that all 44 ethnic
groups from China are represented in Shanghai, but
99.53% are of Han ethnicity.

A Perfect Day in Shanghai
Dear Diary,
I shall begin the story of my perfect day in Shanghai Museum. It was very interesting, packed with
information and just about the best museum I have visited. Next I went to the Buddha Temple (and several
other temples I could not remember the name of) I had never been to any temples before so I cannot
compare it to other experiences, but I can say that it was amazing, beautiful and unlike anything I had ever
seen before. Then I went to the Fresh Water Pearl Gallery, where I had seen hundreds of pearls, seeing them I
debated on whether or not I should jump into a lake to search for one, but I decided to go shopping instead. I
cant say much about that experience except for WOW! I have never seen that many stores!!
You should pray that you dont ever have to know what stinky tofu smells like and now know how it
got its name, but it doesnt taste bad at all which left me at a loss. I did more shopping but sadly I could not
get to all of the stores. If you go to Shanghai you have to see the acrobats- too cool!! When I rst learned that
the show was 4 hours long I thought I would be bored but I wished the astonishing show would never end! I
ate dinner at MR & MRS Bund (a restaurant on the Bund). I ended my day going to bed at the Okura Garden
Hotel, this concludes my day in Shanghai.
