Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matt. 22:36-40; But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matt. 5:44

Love. The two greatest commandments

Our Mission We, as followers of Christ unite to meet some of the common unmet needs in the physical, emotional and spiritual life of a missionary or a Christian worker, at a cost affordable to them, to equip, energise, empower and motivate them to be witnesses for Christ at all times and to raise disciples in the churches they plant. Value We commit ourselves as one family to strive hard and carry out our mission with prayers and all God-given resources sacrificially in a spirit of love, faith and hope maintaining our holiness and integrity in all areas of our life and ministry, crossing all man-made boundaries. Our Belief Gods work, done by Gods people, in Gods way with Gods money will never lack Gods blessings.

that were ever given to mankind have to do with Love. Often we find that the toughest of fights for a believer is to fuel this love toward his neighbor. One is caught up with his own needs, his own commitments and his own family that he is hardly able to muster up any motivation and passion to love his brother. And this battle becomes even fierce in todays world which constantly strives to shift ones focus to ones own pleasures and comforts. A short note to enable one think biblically about loving others and the motivation to do so, I hope would help. In this is Love, the Apostle John says not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:10). The greatest act of love in the universe is that a Holy God would send his one and only begotten Son to die for undeserving sinners like us. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the church of Ephesians says that we were by nature children of wrath or as another translation puts it enemies of God. But Paul continues God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us...made us

alive together with Christ. Love, God, enemies - do these words strike a familiar note? Are they very close if not the same words that Jesus used? Lets explore a little further. John, we just heard does not leave us with those words alone when teaching on love in 1 John 4. He continues in verse 11, Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. And in verse 19, We love because he first loved us. If anyone says I love God and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. Do you see where these verses lead us? When one does not love his brother, the question he ought to be asking himself is not as to why he is not able to love his brother but whether he loves GOD? Do we love God? The result of the obeying the first commandment of Jesus provides a believer the needed strength and passion to obey the second. The biblical way of loving your neighbors is to love them from an outflow of your love for God. Loving your neighbor is a visible expression of your love for God. As John writes both of these go hand in hand. One cannot claim to love God yet

PAIN, HUMILIATION AND GODS FAITHFULNESS

I remember the meditation I had on the last Good Friday. It was all about the suffering that Jesus bore for my sins. Now I can understand better the pain and the suffering that Jesus underwent as I have myself experienced a tiny bit of it. All of a sudden one day I could not pass urine and from then my pain started. My condition deteriorated rapidly and so I was admitted to CMC Hospital, Vellore, and shifted finally to ICU with an attendant to watch all the monitors that were connected to my body. Investigations meant lot of poking with needles. The unbearable nagging pain in my legs, and pricking pain in several areas have enabled me to understand pain better. The humiliation I have gone through my body being exposed to several men and women, the times I felt helpless as I submitted to others to do things for me which I would never have allowed if only I had strength and freedommade me feel miserable. The mental suffering that I went through as I failed in my commitments, missing appointments and not showing up in meetings that I promised to attend made me wonder, Why, God? Why have You forsaken me? When I was helpless and at the mercy of others and sometimes when the caregivers who attended on me had a frown on their face I felt that I had become a burden to them, and I felt miserable and humiliated. However when God sent people of His choice at the right time to minister to Shanthi and me I had new strength to face my ordeal. The silent presence, encouraging words, kind deeds, assuring SMS and personal visits, short and sweet prayers did miracles in my body and life. But for these people I would have felt lonely and forsaken in my ordeal. My prayer was, Lord, let every one of your children going through such crises in their life have such a
2

support as I received. Please grant each one in MUT to have the sensitivity to empathize and extend all possible assistance to everyone you send to us. I feel I will be a better caregiver from now on. Experiencing pain and undergoing humiliating situations have now made me to be more sensitive and empathetic to the needs of the fellow workers in distress. I now have the assurance that the Sovereign Lord is in control of this ministry and He has raised His people to manage it better than what I have done all these years. I am grateful to God that I never had fear of death all through; that, I think, is the grace that God has bestowed on me. Now, thanks to be God, after I was discharged the hospital after the prostate surgery I am writing this with a grateful heart. When the trouble started and we

left for Vellore to take medical treatment neither I nor Shanthi imagined that our financial needs towards medical treatment were going to be high. In 2003 both of us decided to have medical insurance coverage for Rs. 50000 each, so that it would come handy when one of us was affected by any major illness, needing hospitalisation. We carried the insurance policy with us to CMC with confidence that we would be able to manage. But within a couple of days we found out that the particular agency was black listed by CMC and that we would have to settle the hospital bills directly and send our claims to the agency later for reimbursement, instead of cashless treatment in the hospital. However God enabled three brothers who have been our regular supporters for the last few years, to rush support money. When I started getting some strong and expensive antibiotics for two weeks, the expenses started mounting. Though I

was quite puzzled, I had the assurance that God was in control of the situation. Even though I had not informed anyone about my situation, my siblings and their children started sending lots of money to meet the medical expenses. I am sure God knew that Shanthi and I would not have been able to face any financial strains at this point of time when we were surmounted by several other pressures and worries. Praise God for CMC Hospital and the doctors and other medical staff, serving who gave me the best possible medical treatment and also concessions. I think it is time now to acknowledge how God led me and my family all these 18 long years. When God called me to serve in His vineyard, it was an urgent one that needed prompt obedience. There was no time to think, plan or decide anything. By His grace I had the courage to take the bold step to walk out of the comfort zone! Nearly for 12 years Shanthi and I had enjoyed life without any physical needs. All were provided by the firm where I was employed. After resigning the job, I realised very soon that God alone was my pay master. It was not very difficult in the first few years as I had received retirement benefits. My daughters marriage was performed in June 1997 at Vellore and my son left for his graduation in Canada in 1998. Then the time came when all my savings got exhausted and we had to manage our life with my monthly assured income of Rs. 1869! Praise God for Shanthi and her meticulous way of spending; we started facing the financial challenges bravely. Again it was God who gave enough strength and encouragement through many situations to demonstrate His unfailing love. I narrate the following two instances to amply my statement. 1) When our house was burgled in 1994 while we were away, Shanthi thought we had lost everything that we possessed on the earth! But when we returned we found out that the thieves could not locate the few jewels that Shanthi had hidden in a saree and kept in the cupboard. 2) Everyone in our family, particularly my mother, was very much concerned about how I was going to conduct the marriage of my daughter. (People in

India will understand that the girls parents will have to give a lot of money and jewels and also meet the total wedding expenses and perform the wedding in a lavish way!) Again God in a wonderful and marvellous way enabled us to conduct a simple but grand wedding. He gave us a good Christian family which never demanded anything! There were several such things that happened in these years which helped me to cast all my burdens on Him and live a life dependent on Him alone. I never wanted to build a house for us to live. After my conversion, I used to tell my friends that I have started building a mansion up above. Neither had I taken any efforts to build any kind of assets all these years. After 1993, it is only God who was feeding us, clothing us and leading us, like He led the people of Israel to the Promised Land. When the assured income was not even sufficient to meet the house rent that we had to pay, yet we could lead a life without letting anyone around us know the actual situation in our life. It was simply a life trusting God and God alone. During these years I was used by many organisations in the area of training and development and for consultation in HRD. I was happy to involve in all these since I was interested in building relationship with them. But I was careful not to ask for any honorarium, which, when some offered, I accepted. God knew our needs and He took care of us. Of course Shanthi and I used to have arguments and quarrels several times over how we should spend the meagre money we had every month, forgetting it was God who was running our house and meeting all our needs. During this period we made the following decisions / understanding between us. a) Will not receive anything from MUT for our survival. b) Will cut down all wasteful expenditures in our life. c) Will not borrow. d) Will not spend my talents or time on secular jobs to earn for our living. e) Will not ask any one for monetary help for our survival. If I remember correctly, it was around this time only we started tithing more regularly and strictly.

During those years, my bank balance rarely crossed Rs. 10000. Occasionally when it crossed, it was spent the same month as we had some new needs. Of course there were times we were unfaithful to expect help to come from some people and got disappointed. But God has time and again demonstrated the one who called me is ever faithful. At this point of time in my life I would like to write a few things. 1) I think I have been ungrateful in not sharing how He led me, and that is why my fellow leaders have now started emphasising more on safety, security and cautious plans and talks on proper salary. The power of our sovereign God who used me to establish this mission is being forgotten. 2) Some months ago I traced Gods faithfulness in the ministry, and now I would like to acknowledge His mighty deeds in my life, how He took care of us all these years. 3) I keep on hearing people saying that it is not possible to absolutely follow certain teachings of our Lord. But here I am, one who has experienced His kindness and goodness and everlasting faithfulness, keeping quiet, without acknowledging and testifying how God has led me all these years! Now all of a sudden in the last two months I am becoming financially affluent as my bank balance has been going up because of the extra money given by my siblings and their children towards my medical needs. Interestingly, I find other friends of mine have also started sending money against my wishes (when my medical expenses have already

A bulletin from Missionary Upholders Trust April 2005

been met) as they must have assumed or heard from people about the seriousness of my illness and the expensive treatment that I was receiving in the hospital. It is a new experience for me! I spent some sleepless nights over this issue as to how to handle it. Finally I have written to the MUT treasurer, with a request to deposit all these funds in MUT staff welfare a/c earmarking for JJRs future medical expenses. So long it is there, it could be used as a revolving fund to be used to meet the urgent needs of others in MUT team. When I get home call, the money would be given to Shanthi, if she requires. I remember the story that I heard a long time ago which made my belief absolutely firm. A missionary was crying desperately at the burial site of his beloved wife, Lord, why have You forsaken me? I have given up everything to follow You and serve among these people and now I have no hope? Suddenly he heard the faint voice of God reminding him about a boat he had hidden among bushes at the river side. Son, if you trust Me alone, why that boat? For which he loudly said, Lord, You know these people are cannibals and if they turn against me, I need that boat to escape from them. As he uttered this, he understood his condition. Then the missionary stood up, fully convicted, went to the shore, broke the boat into pieces and then said, Lord, I have You alone now in my life. It is my desire that I will be faithful till the end and will look up to Him alone for my earthly needs. I wish to put my faith on Him alone and nothing else and wait for the glorious life ahead in His kingdom. -JJ-

say that he hates his brother. Therefore, the root of the issue that we are dealing with here in not being able to love our neighbors as ourselves is that we dont love God enough. We dont love Him as we ought to be loved. We dont love Him as He deserves to be loved. Beholding the love of God in what He accomplished through His only Son, Jesus for us on the cross awakens a deep love for God in our hearts. Apostle John in 1 John 3:16 writes: By this we know love, that he (Jesus) laid down his life for us. Paul writes in Romans 5:7,8 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-- but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. If only we could begin to see and know how much the Father loves us and how much he already has loved us in sending His son, our hearts and lives would be changed forever. This is precisely why we see the apostle Paul pray the following for us: For this reason I bow my knees before the Father that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.. (Eph 3:1419). Paul knew that the only place for us to draw strength to obey any of His commands comes from our love for Him. He first loved us. Jesus loved us when we did not and still do not deserve his love. If a Holy God could love His enemies in spite of their wickedness, how much more are we to love our fellow human kind? If we have received much grace, why do we then hesitate to give it out to others? If we have received much love, why do we then back out when it comes to loving others? In the context of forgiveness, Jesus answers Peter with a parable about the unforgiving servant (Mat 18: 21-35). The servant in the parable received forgiveness but failed to show it to his servant. This same parable I believe also applies to love. We receive love but fail to show it to others. Jesus warns us against such behavior. The verse 16 that we read earlier from 1 John 3 does not just stop at explaining

love in terms of Jesus laying down his life for us. John continues to say and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the worlds good and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does Gods love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:16-18). How are we dealing with our worldly goods our money, our possessions, our time? Are we having to struggle in our hearts to help a brother, a friend in need? How are we using the blessings that God has blessed us with, to bless others? These are not light questions. These are questions that accurately reflect our love relationship with Christ. And I am in no sense saying that as Gods child, one could easily love his brother or neighbor or his enemies. However, God promises us strength and grace to be able to do that. The Apostle John concludes his exhortation on love with these words And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. Do you love your brother? Do you love your neighbor? Do you love your enemies? DO YOU LOVE GOD?

The Story Behind

The Praying Hands

Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food on the table for this mob, the father and head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade and any other paying chore he could find in the neighbourhood. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of Albrecht Durer the Elders children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew full well that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the Academy.

Expressions of love for one another

The three programmes of MUT which God has given, IMPACT / SMILE, Love Your Brother (LYB) and Good Samaritan (GS), are nothing but opportunities given to missions and missionaries to express Gods love for our brothers and sisters serving in His vineyard, a true expression of Gods Love. But when someone considers them as similar to insurance schemes and calculates their profitability before joining--the essance is lost. Similarly, the support schemes for each of the above schemes provide opportunity to churches and supporters of missions to play a supportive role in the sufferings of Gods servants all over India. They help Christians to cut across man made boundaries to show Gods love for one another at times of crisis. Please pray that Gods people in India will understand the need for upholding one another at times of crisis and show the world that we are His

children.

After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings, support his brother while he attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by labouring in the mines. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church. Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg. Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrechts etchings, woodcuts, and oils were far better than those of most of his professors, and by the time he graduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works. When the young artist returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrechts triumphant homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, punctuated with music and laughter, Albrecht rose from his honoured position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfil his ambition. His closing words were, And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will take care of you. All heads turned in eager expectation to the far end of the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down his pale face, shaking his lowered head from side to side while he sobbed and repeated, over and over, No, no, no, no. Finally Albert rose and wiped the tears from his cheeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces he loved, and then, holding his hands close to his right cheek, he said softly, No, brother. I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too late for me. Look! Look at what four years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once, and lately I have been suffering

from arthritis so badly in my right hand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvas with a pen or a brush. No, brother, for me it is too late. More than 450 years have passed. By now, Albrecht Durers hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silverpoint sketches, watercolours, charcoals, woodcuts, and copper engravings hang in every great museum in the world, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durers works. More than merely being familiar with it, you very well may have a reproduction hanging in your home or office. One day, to pay homage to Albert for all that he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drew his brothers abused hands with palms together and thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply Hands, but the entire world almost immediately opened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamed his tribute of love The Praying Hands. The next time you see a copy of that touching creation, take a second look. Let it be your reminder, if you still need one, that no one no oneever makes it alone! What goes around comes around!

young, 18 year old student was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, he came up with a bright idea. A friend and he decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education. They reached out to the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski. His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck and the boys began to work to make the concert a success. The big day arrived. Paderewski performed at Stanford. But unfortunately, they had not managed to sell enough tickets.

The total collection was only $1600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and explained their plight. They gave him the entire $1600, plus a cheque for the balance $400. They promised to honour the cheque as soon as possible. No, said Paderewski. This is not acceptable. He tore up the cheque, returned the $1600 and told the two boys, Heres the $1600. Please deduct whatever expenses you have incurred. Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left. The boys were surprised, and thanked him profusely. It was a small act of kindness. But it clearly marked out Paderewski as a great human being. Why should he help two people he did not even know? We all come across situations like these in our lives. And most of us only think, If I help them, what would happen to me? The truly great people think, If I dont help them, what will happen to them? They dont do it expecting something in return. They do it because they feel its the right thing to do. Paderewski later went on to become the Prime Minister of Poland. He was a great leader, but unfortunately when the World War began, Poland was ravaged. There were over 1.5 million people starving in his country, and no money to feed them. Paderewski did not know where to turn for help. He reached out to the US Food and Relief Administration for help. The head there was a man called Herbert Hoover who later went on to become the US President. Hoover agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food grains to feed the starving Polish people. A calamity was averted. Paderewski was relieved. He decided to go across to meet Hoover and personally thank him. When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his noble gesture, Hoover quickly interjected and said, You shouldnt be thanking me, Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college in the US. I was one of them. The world is a wonderful place. What goes around comes around! Sometimes we notice it, sometimes we dont.

Teddys Best Teacher

As she stood in front of
her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold Xs and then putting a big F at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each childs past records and she put Teddys off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise. First grade: Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners. He is a joy to be around. Second grade: Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle. Third grade teacher wrote, His mothers death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesnt show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps arent taken. Fourth grade: Teddy is withdrawn and doesnt show much interest in school. He doesnt have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class. By now Mrs. Thompson realised the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas

presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddys. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the childrens laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy stayed after school that day just long enough to say, Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to. After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. She paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her teachers pets. A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, hed stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honours. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favourite teacher he had ever had in his whole life. Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelors degree, he

decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favourite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer. The letter was signed Theodore F. Stoddard, MD. The story does not end there. There was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course Mrs. Thompson did. And she wore that bracelet with several rhinestones missing. Moreover she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompsons ear, Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference. Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didnt know how to teach until I met you. Just try to make a difference in someones life today. Just do it. Random acts of kindness, I think they call it!

A chance to love? Use it!

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren (1 John 3:16). A prayer cell group conducted a Bible study on the topic love. One of the participants was a printer. He told the group that his mother had died when he was a baby and he had been raised by a stern father who was a cold moralist. The man said he had never experienced love and didnt understand what it was. He asked the group, What do you mean by the love of God? His friends were amazed to discover someone sitting beside them who had never experienced love. From that day on, we can be sure, they took

every opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ to the loveless printer. It saddens us to realise there are people who never know what love feels like. But only those who know the love of Christ really know true love; and only those who know His love can show His love. Take a moment today to thank God for His indescribable gift, and ask Him to show you someone you can love today. Make hay while the sun shines.

In Pursuit Of Holiness
Yesterday

was the most important birthday in my life, the day I was born again, April 15, 1979. It was an Easter Sunday morning. The Lord had dealt with me in a beautiful way to make me understand that He alone is priority in my life. That was a turning point. And the journey still continues. I traced it back a little with my team mates in Vellore for my own edification. (Later I understood it was helpful to many of my colleagues also.) Hence I would like to share with you also through this open letter. Someone has recorded what had appealed to him most, and it makes my job easy to write this article! First of all, we need to understand that the born again experience is different for different people. Essentially, it is the submission of our life to Jesus Christ. Only then it will also become a growing process. Being born in a Christian family is not enough to make one born again. Each one of us in MUT knows there is a purpose for the ministry. But what could be the purpose that Jesus might have had in starting MUT? One said, His people to glorify Jesus Christ. Another said, Jesus has involved me in MUT for my edification and purification, and that by serving in this ministry, I may attain to His image. All of us have an understanding of holiness; but many times it just remains only in our understanding. For example, compromising with the world and getting some work done through bribing may not be

wrong in the eyes of the world if the amount is not alarming; but is it so in the eyes of our Lord? A bribe of 100 rupees is just as serious before our Lord as a bribe of 100,000 rupees! One sheet of paper taken from the office for my personal use without permission could be a theft in the eyes of my Lord. If pursuit for purity is lost in a ministry, it is a sheer waste. Satan has overcome us! When the ministry grows and activities are hectic, one must become vigilant; that is the time we may move away from Gods purpose for the ministry. An easy way to establish holiness in life or ministry is through control and having strict rules and regulations. But the desire to be pure has to come from ones heart. The purpose of giving the Ten Commandments was not to punish His people who erred but for His people to demonstrate the holiness of God. What I do is not as important to my Lord as how I do it. And that alone is going to decide my worth in His kingdom. The world may applaud numbers and the extent of achievements in my life and ministry. But God cares primarily for holiness in my life and ministry. The biggest temptation for a Christian is to become judgmental very quickly. Just because one has knowledge about holiness does not make the person holy. The easiest thing is to start correcting others with the infinite wisdom of the human mind; but the difficult thing is to become a living example of holiness through my life. Note: When each of the participants was asked to write one thing he or she considers unholy, the following list emerged: 1) Lies 2) Disobedience 3) Wrong relationship 4) Self Righteousness 5) Prayerlessness 6) Lack of patience 7) Hypocrisy 8) Unacceptable and abusive words 9) Adultery 10) Lack of forgiveness 11) Anger 12) Lust 13) Gossip 14) Jealousy

A bulletin from Missionary Upholders Trust April 2005

15) Pride 16) Selfishness. (We referred two passages from the Bible and we could find a whole lot of things which are abominations to God (Mark 7:2123 & Gal.5:19-21). At the end of the meeting many of us felt that a cutting edge is missing in our lives, and each one surrendered our selves once again through a short prayer. PS: I urge the readers to get a copy of the book The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges for your personal study. You may use it in your Bible study group or in the meditation time in the ministry. The other recommendation is the Life Revision Seminar organized at ODC at regular intervals. Such exercises could help us widen our understanding of Gods holiness and keep us on the track in our journey to Heaven. -JJ-

SET APART
Our

Lord regarded His followers as a select company that belonged to a different world from other people. He warned the disciples to be loyal to His teachings and principles. He told them that they were to set their affection on things above. He also warned that they would find circumstances exceedingly difficult. Refusing to conform to worldly principles and practices, and living under the lordship of Christ, they would soon become marked men. He told them that the world would hate them. They could not make their light shine by sinking to the worlds low level. It was only by abiding in Christ and living under the ruling power of His Holy Spirit that they could elevate the world. The power and progress of the Christian church would depend on its unlikeness to the world and its likeness to Jesus Christ. The distinction between the lives of those who lived for this world and those who lived for Christs world was so clear that it made a deep impression on the pagan world of the first century. The early Christians influenced thousands to embrace the Christian faith because they were more loving and more considerate than their neighbours. If anyone desires to come after Me, let him take up his cross daily (Luke 9: 23). - Billy Graham

Life Revision Seminar (English), 27th June to 1st July 2011

These retreats are conducted every year for the kids of missionaries working in various mission fields and who receive financial assistance from MUT. They aim at addressing the spiritual and emotional needs of MKids. The theme for this year was Heirs of God (Rom.8:16-17). 37 MKids (14 boys, 23 girls) got blessed through the retreat. Pastor Dayalan, Bro. Anbu, Dr. Oby Cherian, Bro. Christopher and Sis. Hannah were the resource persons for the retreat. Sis. Ruby Mangaldoss was in charge of the programme management. Every day started with prayer and worship, and messages were given in the morning and evening sessions and after dinner. The MKids enjoyed different outdoor games in the evening. The messages covered subjects such as How to overcome temptation, Experience with the Holy Spirit, Gods creation, Integrity in life, Sexuality and the Christian, Hidden talents and leadership skills, and Third culture kids. One afternoon there was a discussion on the hidden lives of Christians which helped the kids to identify their character, hidden lives and masks. MKids responses Most of the MKids experienced a touch of God during the retreat and mentioned that they would spend more time with God and also read the Bible. A few of the responses were: experienced Jesus, learnt to read the Bible regularly and be holy, learnt how to work as team and to face difficult challenges in life, learnt how to work with children, want to practice integrity in life, understood where I am in my spiritual life by the integrity check, God has a purpose

in everything and all the messages were meant for me, enjoyed the time of sharing and personal counselling,

learnt the art of leadership and how to approach people to share God, God spoke to me during the devotion time that our God is awesome, little things that I learnt in retreat helped me to be strong in tough times, learnt how to get leadership qualities, to become a good missionary in future. - Roger Magi & Joy Roger

Counselling Training Programme

An Accredited Advanced Biblical Counselling Course was held at ODC for MUT member missionaries during June

Our love for God is best evident by our love to others.

Counsellor Mah Laihs visit

2025, 2011 by the Person to Person Institute for Christian Counselling. This programme was meant to provide participants with knowledge, skills and attitude that will enable them to become practitioners in the field of Christian counselling. The 18 missionaries who participated mentioned that they were blessed in their own lives and also taught counselling principles and skills to help others in need. Some of the feedback: I praise God for helping me to attend this course and I never thought counselling requires many skills like this till I attended this course and I learnt the various ways of counselling. God blessed our family life through this counselling seminar. I never thought counselling has such a healing power and I understood it very well now. - Mr.Issac Raja

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity (Psa.133:1). The family of Christ is universal. The love of Christ knows no boundaries in terms of caste, creed, culture or nationality. It is a wonderful experience to work together for His glory regardless of any such differences. To give us this sweet experience, God brings people from abroad time and again to help in various activities of MUT. Recently God moved the heart of Ms. Mah Laih from Shanghai, China, who is basically a German lady teaching

in a school. As she was praying for Gods guidance to spend her summer vacation meaningfully she saw an online advertisement from MUT announcing that MUT would be glad to have volunteers to help in counselling and mentoring. As a certified counsellor she contacted MUT by email expressing her desire to come to MUT. MUT gladly invited her, and she arrived on June 25, 2011 and left on July 10, 2011. During her short stay here she spent time with each staff member and some family members of staff counselling them individually. As a counsellor she could relate to people very easily. She was a patient listener and encouraged every one with the word of God. She conducted counselling classes for some of the staff members on topics such as what counselling is and what it is not, communication and conflict resolution, two levels of communication, forgiveness, and how to counsel the chronically ill. One afternoon she conducted a team retreat for all the staff members at MUT. She had different games to teach that all were one in Christ and were to work with unity despite differences in personality. During the last session she distributed cards to each one with names written on them and asked them to write something positive about one another. It really gave an opportunity to appreciate everyone, and also to think about people whom they have not thought of seriously before. Make others feel that there is something good in them. Ms. Mah Laih said, I am so overwhelmed by the love I am shown and I dont feel I am a stranger here. So obviously her visit to MUT gave a pleasant experience both to her and all in MUT. MUT would gladly welcome other people who can volunteer to do counselling and mentoring. Let us join hands and work together to build and to rebuild Gods kingdom. Then I told them of the hand of my God which was upon me for good, and also the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build! So they strengthened their hands for the good work (Neh.2:18). - Mrs.Amudha Venugopal

PRAYER & REFLECTION RETREAT

The wind blow that crisscrossed the MUT ODC campus could not deter the still small voice of the Lord being heard by the participants of the Prayer & Reflection Retreat cum Training that was held from July 13th to the 22nd. There were ---participants from IMS, ICGM, KB, IEM, NF, MUF and MUT who were blessed by a team of 4 SIL Staff and 5 Indian staff under the dynamic servant leadership of Dr Evelyn Davis. The session on Spiritual Inventory and Markers set the tone for the rest of the days, as the participants could reflect on the past and see the patterns of Gods leading in their lives. Each day started with a time of worship based on the theme for the day followed by a short orientation and an extended time with the Lord. The focus was on hearing the Lord Jesus speaking to us even today. It was usually followed by a time of sharing in the triplets and then in the big group. The cycle went on in the afternoon as well, as the participants got to read many life-changing articles and sets of Bible verses and questions that helped them to pray differently and enjoy a close communion with the Lord.

Dr Jessie helped the participants to look at Prayer from a different perspective and the subsequent Prayer Appointments with the staff were times of catharsis and guidance for many participants. The Personal Worship sessions helped many to regain the lost priority for worship with creative ideas. Our Time of Need helped the participants to identify and express their own needs to the Lord and receive His guidance. Mr Franklins team ministered to the group. The misunderstanding about the Sabbath was expelled as the participants went through a time of sacred rest and reflection on Sunday, under the guidance of Dr Jessie, with specific focus on Finding a Rhythm of Rest. Dr Warrens team helped the participants go through three sessions on Servant Leader, which challenged our very concepts of ministry and helped to recommit. Sisters Karen and Vasanthi facilitated the group to look at the changes and growth in adults lives using few Images from the New Testament, which was followed by the session on Prayer Issues by Dr Lata. Some participants were led by the Lord to take decisive steps with regard to their ministry careers. The last session on Life Tasks was a revelation as each participant could reflect on their own life periods and the relevant issues and seek the heart of the Lord. The 10 days Retreat cum Training came to a close with a memorable Holy Communion and foot washing service, where the participants also shared their own blessings received from these days with the Lord. The Lead Facilitator Dr Evelyn presented each of them with a set of

CDs and Bible Verse cards which they can use in their own ministries. They have promised to take these ideas to their hearts and to conduct the same types of retreats in their own organizations. One participant, who is a key leader in his mission, quipped: I wish I had these types of meetings/trainings fifteen years ago, when I first joined in ministry. Another said: I could experience God afresh here. Praise be to God, as we thank the MUT leadership team, including Dr Isaac and the JJRs, for not only arranging the programme - but also for being with us all through the event as humble participants. - Samuel Abraham

SMILE While responding to the needs of missionaries, MUT has become aware of the similar needs of thousands of Christian workers who do not strictly come under the category of missionaries. The vision of SMILE was born out of the concern for Christian workers in missions, churches, institutions, and associations involved in evangelism. SMILE was launched from the office of the Hope Ministries, Bangalore with Pastor Robert DRoza as the President. The former secretary, Bro. Jacob Ninan from Hope Ministries played a pivotal role in nurturing SMILE to the present stage. Now the stage is set for the fruitful growth of this scheme, with the church leaders taking note of the usefulness of the scheme. Like IMPACT which is applicable to missionaries working in monolithic organisations, SMILE attracts Christian servants working with conglomerate pastor fellowships or networks. With a view to reach the grass-root workers and also to impart a local/regional flavour to this scheme, SMILE brochures are being translated into major Indian languages. Systematic planning is done to introduce this through the main churches and pastoral fellowships. With the membership crossing 4100, our next move would be to introduce the LYB scheme (health care) which is the crying need of today .As we go all out to help the labourers in the Lords vineyard, please pray that our concern will be amply matched by caution with regards to the pitfalls that may lie ahead of us. - Victor

MISSIONARY UPHOLDERS FAMILY (MUF) MUF was formed in 1984, mainly to challenge & encourage Christian families to involve in missions by raising financial support & prayer. As of 1st January 2009, there are about 350 groups supporting as many missionaries through 50 plus missions serving all over India. Central Co-ordinator Mr. DJ Chelladurai, Ph- 0452 2389523 MISSIONARY UPHOLDERS TRUST (MUT) MUT was a spin off from MUF (Missionaries Upholder Family) in the year 1993. The role of MUT is to care for missionaries by meeting some of the common unmet needs at a cost affordable to them in physical, emotional and spiritual areas, with a view to equip, energise and to motivate them, to build the kingdom of God effectively. MUT is an umbrella body having over 115 Organizations as member missions covering about 15000 missionaries. MUT is governed by a Board of Trustees and managed by the General Coordinator assisted mostly by volunteers; recently some of the Member Missions have taken keen interest in the ministry and are giving their committed workers on deputation for a period from 6 months to 2 years. There are 22 people now on MUT payroll, receiving monthly remuneration. The operational costs and administrative expenses are kept low through sponsorship and donations towards administrative expenses. MUT does not append any money from any of its earmarked donations received. For more information: visit www.mutindia.org
