Our Parish Mission Statement

All of Us - #538
Fr. Larry No Christian community can be built up unless it has its basis and center in the celebration of the most Holy Eucharist. This simple, but powerful statement, is a quote from the Second Vatican Council. These words came from prayerful and pastorally minded leaders of our church, who reminded us that all of parish life needs to be deeply connected to the prayer, sacrifice and thanksgiving that we offer together every Sunday in the name of Christ Jesus. Everything else in a parish needs to flow forth from the Eucharist - like our willingness to care for the hungry and the poor; our desire to socialize as a parish family; the ways we try to pass our Catholic faith onto our children; the ways we welcome new parishioners, and especially the ways we treat one another on a daily basis. Our Sunday Eucharist calls us to be as the Body of Christ for one another. In the best sense of the word, we are called to be Eucharistic People, meaning that we try to live with the awareness that Jesus is in our presence at all times. Restoring Our Home Over the past 10 years, significant capital work, repairs and improvements have taken place throughout our parish campus. The list of work is a long one, from tuck pointing the top of the bell tower, to replacing the furnace in the basement of the church; from buying four homes in order to build an additional parking lot, a new grotto, putting a new entrance onto the front of our church, to air conditioning the entire school. There is a lot more to the list of major capital projects that reflects over $3 million worth of work, mostly on the outside of our buildings. More importantly, the success of these projects reflects the generosity and stewardship of our parishioners. Ironically, when I reflect on the extensive list of capital projects, it strikes me that after 10 years we are now finally tending to the most important place for us, which is where we pray, the very place we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. Our Faith, Our Gift, Our Home Our capital campaign, entitled, Our Faith, Our Gift, Our Home, started in May, 2011. It specifically

designated improvements to the interior of our church. The following information summarizes where we are at this moment, and also explains our plans to continue to tend to our spiritual home. Last November, we completed the first phase of construction for the renovation of our church that included a total of three new washrooms, two Reconciliation rooms and a hospitality room. A few final touches remain that include providing end tables for the washrooms, a rug and furniture for the hospitality room and hooks on the wall for coats. The hospitality room will be a nice place for people to gather especially before and after weddings, baptisms, funerals and special events. The cost of construction for Phase I to the Paul Borg Construction Company was $222,057. Four initial bids were sought for the construction portion of the project from contractors that were on the approved list of the Archdiocese of Chicago. (Note that major capital repair projects of this size must use contractors that have been approved by the Archdiocese.) In consultation with our Finance Committee, following the policies and procedures of the Archdiocese Office of Facilities and Construction, and after various reference checks, the lowest bid was chosen. Other associated costs with Phase I, as of March 12, 2012, included: Village of Lemont permits $801 Air conditioning modifications $1,077 Asbestos inspection and abatement $3,290 Architectural drawings, fees and services $20,649 Campaign material printing and publishing $1,256 Hospitality room rug, mirror and furniture $1,363 Refinishing & reupholstering chairs, kneelers and confessionals $6,330 Restoration of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine $3,900 Walk of Love pavers $435 Note that the newly restored Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine that is currently displayed in the Hospitality room will be relocated to one of the new Reconciliation rooms so that people can participate in this devotion in a place that will have less distractions or interruptions. Franciscan Friars from Ft. Wayne, Indiana have inquired about obtaining our remaining unused confessionals for their community. The small altar that was part of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Shrine will be kept in storage. We will hold onto the altar with the hope that in the future it can be used again in some way, shape or form.

With the approval and recommendation of the Parish Council, Finance Committee and Renovation Committee, the next phase of construction is set to begin this summer on June 1. This phase involves the painting of the entire church with a restored design and color scheme, cleaning the existing murals and stained glass windows, restoring the Stations of the Cross, along with improvements to our lighting and sound system. Mass will still continue to be celebrated in church during this period of construction. In June of last year, six paint companies were involved in a formal interview process. All of these companies were recommended and approved by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Conrad Schmitt is the company that was chosen to professionally paint our church. Of all companies considered, Conrad Schmitt exhibited the best knowledge, skill and ability to complete such a project, and also showed the best ideas for design and attention to detail for the restoration of our historical church. They have been in business for over 100 years and have extensive experience painting historical churches of our size throughout the United States. The painting contract is $459,000. (Note that the Archdiocese requires that union workers be used when a project is $300,000 or more.) After Easter, in mid-April, a paint sample will be applied to one of the areas of our church so that we can evaluate the new colors in their natural setting. We are also in the process of solidifying other contracts over the next couple of months for the lighting, sound system, millwork and construction that will be included in the cost of Phase II. St. Cyrils has a long history of parishioners who have worked on major capital projects for our parish. For example: The complete re-roofing of the church and rectory Paving and reconstruction of our parking lots i Demolition of the old convent i Renovation of the choir loft i Construction for the air conditioning system in church
i i

expressed an interest. They have been approved and will be included in the bidding process. I am excited about the future enhancements planned for the interior of our worship space for this summer. In 2013, we are looking at restoring the pews, replacing the carpet and installing a new baptismal font. Every registered parishioner by now should have received the direct mailing that shows an artist rendering for the work to be done. We encourage those who have not yet made a pledge to the capital campaign to prayerfully consider making a financial commitment as we enter into the next phase of this work. Our goal is 100% participation. Let us pray that God will help us as we restore the beauty of our historic church. Our ancestors in 1929 blessed us with a sacred place for worship and prayer. Now is our time to make a wonderful gift to the future. Filled With the Spirit Congratulations to our teens who were confirmed this weekend by Bishop John Manz. We celebrated two Masses on Saturday confirming 140 students. What a proud moment for them, their parents, their family, friends and our parish. Our teens represent the future of our Church. We pray that the Holy Spirit will bless and guide them as they live out the Catholic faith entrusted to them by their parents and godparents. The celebration of Confirmation allows us to be mindful of those who have helped us to believe in the gospel message. Who are the holy people in your life that lead you closer to Jesus? This Lent, let us pray in thanksgiving for the men and women who have spiritually encouraged us in our journey of faith. We are truly blessed to have them in our lives. They are one of Gods many gift to us. Flyers/notices Please note it is illegal to post flyers or notices on the parked cars in our lots during Mass. Be advised that our parish does not permit advertising to take place in our parking lots, nor do we promote or endorse any political candidate. If youd like to advertise in our bulletin please call the J.S. Paluch Co., (800) 566-6170.

As we approach this next phase of restoring the interior beauty of our church, a blanket invitation is extended publicly to those who may have a desire to be involved in the construction work. Contractors need to be approved and meet the requirements of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Application packets are available at the front desk of the rectory for all contractors seeking Archdiocesan construction work. Feel free to pick one up. Some parishioners have already come forward and

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Dear Parents,

March 18, 2012

During Lent we have taken time to focus on the Stations of the Cross. Each week we have gathered in church and prayed them together. They have been led by teachers and students. We have also started each week by going to the gym, taking three of the stations, and trying to focus on them as a faith community for that particular week. Tomorrow, the Living Stations of the Cross will be presented for our fourth graders. I encourage you to join them in prayer at 2:00 PM or at 6:30 PM in church. On Thursday March 8th, the students in our school took part in our first Academic Fair. They did a great job researching, writing and presenting projects in a variety of ways. These were a part of the different inquiry based units the teachers have been working on during this school year. Many, many parents joined us and were very pleased with the work of our students. Thank you to all of our teachers for their hard work. The second trimester report cards went home on Thursday, March 8th, and we are into our final trimester. Its hard to believe how quickly we are moving towards the end of another school year. Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to once again make our Fish Frys a huge success. We are blessed to have them as a part of our school family! If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about our school and all we have to offer, please call our office at 630-257-6488 ext.19.

Lent 2012 Discover how a little time can touch the lives of many
Volunteer for a SS. Cyril & Methodius Ministry

As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another 1 Peter 4:8-11

Below are descriptions of ministries in areas of our parish life which have the biggest need for your gifts and talents:
Art & Environment
Decorates the church and gym for Christmas and Easter and takes care of flowers and other liturgical symbols in church throughout the year. There are many opportunities to volunteer in this Ministry depending on ones availability. Choirs, Cantors and Instrumentalists, we have a place for everyone to share their musical gifts with God and our community. Most choirs rehearse weekly for an hour. Cantors are song leaders who lead the congregation in singing music for each Mass and rehearse twice a month. Cantors can sing at Masses as little or as often as they like. Other rehearsals are scheduled as needed. Our religious education program focuses on the need for students to embrace Jesus in their lives, speak about the faith they share and relate to one another so that the Word of God is always present with them. We need catechists, catechist aides and crossing guards for the upcoming school year. Classes are held on a weekly basis for an hour and a half from September until mid-April. The benefits of sharing your faith with the children of our parish are enormous. Your response now will help us prepare for the next session. The Board of Specified Jurisdiction (BSJ) is designed to cooperate and collaborate with the Pastor and principal to support the work of administering and leading the school. It is composed of a variety of committees which meet on a regular basis. The focus of each committee is to help identify and address school needs and goals. Programs and activities for the youth of the three Lemont Parishes (SS. Cyril & Methodius, St. Alphonsus and St. Patrick) are created to involve 13- to 17-year olds in parish life and continued spiritual growth. Outings, day trips, sports, scripture study and contemporary Masses are just a few of the activities sponsored throughout the year. Parents and chaperones are needed for these various events and projects. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a program for adults interested in becoming Catholic. The role of a sponsor is to act as a guide or friend during class and around the parish. The sponsor attends the Monday evening sessions with the candidate, as they feel comfortable. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Church and welcome new members. Your response now will help us prepare for the next session. Involves planning the funeral liturgy with the family and/or serving as a sacristan for the Funeral Mass. Distribute Holy Communion (bread and wine) at Mass. Prior to becoming a Communion Minister, training is required by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Upon completion of training, the person is then commissioned at Mass and given a certificate from the Archdiocese. Communion ministers usually serve about once a month. Proclaim the Word of God at Mass and for Prayer Services and also offer the Prayers of the Faithful when a deacon is not present. Upon completion of a mandatory training program, the person is commissioned as a lector and is usually scheduled once a month. Assist parishioners upon arrival at church and help with seating during crowded liturgies. Ushers guide the faithful in an orderly manner to receive Holy Communion and they also take up the collection. Sunday sacristans help before and after Mass to prepare the liturgical items and vessels used at our Sunday liturgies. As a wedding sacristan, youll explain the wedding liturgy and practice the marriage ceremony with the bridal party, prepare our sacred space for the celebration of Mass and assist families on the day of the wedding. The rectory occasionally needs help with various office functions; Saturday receptionists, bulk mailings, bulletin and envelope stuffing.

March 18, 2012 Respect Life I Came that All might have Life, and Have it to the Full!

The PADS season is in full swing!

PADS is an acronym for Public Action to Deliver Shelter. It is a series of facilities, mostly churches, which serve as a safe haven one night per week for homeless men, women and children. St. Lukes Orthodox Church is the Monday night shelter we support. The churches in Lemont cover all the needs on the first Monday of each month, October through April. But St. Lukes is finding it more and more difficult to find people to cover the other Mondays during the month. The shift times are: 7-11PM, 11PM-3AM, 3-7AM and 5-8AM. The work is simple and it is wonderful to develop relationships with the guests. If you could give only one shift from now until the end of April, it would be a big help to St. Lukes. Please seriously consider this. If you are interested, call me at 630.257.2414 or email at ddabneyj@st-als.org and I will put you in touch with the proper people. Thanks so much.
