BACKGROUND INFORMATION Nico was referred for speech and language evaluation two years ago (June 17 2010) for having delayed and speech language development secondary to autism. It was found that he had delayed language skills, primary precursory skills and phonological development. Preceding the first evaluation, Nico was then sent by his family to SPED school and speech and language therapy. He has been attending SPED school every day since his first evaluation. He recently attended speech and language therapy. He attends these therapy sessions twice a week, every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Parent intervention in teaching the child speech and language skills also was done after home program for the child was given. The goals addressed primarily were facilitation of precursory language skills, identification of phonemes /g, t, and k/. As Nico improved, other goals such as facilitation of language for learning skills to prepare him for mainstreaming, improvement of pragmatic skills and expansion of vocabulary were targeted. It can be observed that since initial evaluation, the child improved greatly being able to achieve all of the goals that were set for him. Other skills were also acquired due to speech and language intervention. RE-EVALUATION

SUMMARY

Nico exhibits slightly delayed language for learning skills characterized by limited vocabulary, ______________________. This appears to be associated with his limited attention span and few opportunities to develop and use his L4L skills. Prognosis for development and improvement of these L4L skills is good based on family support, attendance in SPED class and in speech and language therapy and social interaction at school at and home. Limiting factors include financial status, attendance of the child in SPED class that doesnt cater to his vocabulary needs, speech and language therapy is in group sessions and the childs limited attention

Recommendations It is recommended that the child undergo speech and language therapy on a one on one basis focusing on: o Improvement of vocabulary o Improvement of articulation of three to four syllable non-familiar words o Facilitation of age appropriate narrative skills o Facilitation of ability to make inferences on abstract ideas or concepts o Improvement of grammar to produce sentences that have grammatical markers o Improvement of eye contact to communicative partners Assessment of sensory integration issues from an occupational therapist is also recommended.
