State Standards
Edit

K.OA.1. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. K.OA.2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. K.OA.3. Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each

decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 3 and 5 = 4 1). K.OA.4. For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation. K.OA.5. Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Goals
Unit Goals: Edit
1. TLW recognize the meaning of addition.

2. TLW begin to manipulate numbers by simple addition. Lesson Goals: Edit 1. To use concrete objects to solve addition problems 3. To use pictures to solve addition problems 4. To use objects to solve addition problems 5. To use pictures to complete addition sentences 6. To create and act out addition stories using objects 7. To use the problem solving strategy make a model to solve problems

Methods
Anticipatory Set: Edit Share lesson goals and objectives with students: they will be introduced to addition concepts and will complete addition sentences by working in groups and individually. The teacher will present students with the following problem: It's your birthday and you have invited 3 friends over for a party. Your mom tells you that she has invited 2 of your cousins to join the party. You you need to by enough birthday hats for each person at your party. How many hats will you need in all?

The teacher will then ask students why they think addition is important in their everyday lives. The teacher will lead students in a discussion of when they think they would need to use addition. The teacher will allow students to discuss this in small groups. The teacher will then show a video explaining simple addition. Introduce and Model New Knowledge: Edit The teacher will chose a student to hold an addition sign and another student to hold an equal sign. Students will then be chosen to act as numbers within the addition problem (ex. three students will stand before the addition sign and 1 after to model 3 1=). Students will then move to the right of the equal sign to reveal the answer. Teacher will use SMART Notebook software to model the proposed question (birthday hats) from the anticipatory set. The teacher will then use the SMART Notebook lesson to model other addition problems on the board. Students will be asked to visit the board to interact with the lesson and help to solve the problems. Teacher will model on the board how students will create addition problems by rolling each die to fill in numbers for the problem. Provide Guided Practice: Edit After modeling several problems using dice on SMART board, teacher will divide students into small groups and present each student group with 2 giant dice and an addition recording sheet. Groups will be monitored as they take turns rolling dice and recording addition problems on sheet. Provide Independent Practice: Edit Teacher will set up 4 centers for students and assign groups to each center. Students will be given 10 minutes to complete each center. Center 1: Students will use giant dice to complete addition recording sheet as practiced during lesson. Center 2: SMART Board center. Students will use the SMART Board to play addition games on websites. Center 3: Giant Number Line: Group of students take turns pulling cards with numbers from 1 to 5. Students pull first card and move to

that number on the line. They pull a second card and move that many more spaces. Students observe the number where they land and other members of the group record the problem and answer. Center 4: Adding Bears. Students turn over cards with addition problems. They model the problems by representing each number with bear counters. They then move all the counters to the right of the equal sign to reveal the answer.

Wrap-Up
Edit

With the help of the teacher, each group will be asked to demonstrate an addition problem from their center using the "human addition problem" activity. Teacher will ask students to recall why addition is important in their everyday lives. Students will share their new beliefs with others at their tables.

Assessment
Formative/Ongoing Assessment: Edit Observation and questioning during independent activities. Visit centers to monitor success and correct any errors. Assess student understanding by monitoring closing activity sharing. Summative/End Of Lesson Assessment: Edit Assess student understanding by reviewing any written work. Teacher will use following questions to evaluate work: Are answers accurate? Does work show a clear understanding of the process of addition? Does work portray a recognition of the meaning of addition?
