TRIP REPORT: OIL PALM PLANTATION -PRACTICE MANAGEMENT-

INTRODUCTION.

On 21st November, I followed the academy trip to Sime Darby plantation in, Metakab. We go to the Mentakab plantation branch that was establish on 1920. It was known as Cermang division before change to Mentakab division. In Sime Darby plantation estate it has divided into 3 divisions which is Andensor, Lanchang and Mentakab. Sime Darby is the outcome of merging between 2 companies of plantation that is Golden Hope and Guthrie. For the early this company had make rubber as their major planting but in year 1981 the management was change their planting to oil palm. In Metakab division only they were covered about 3 thousand hectare. The management also takes 90 percent of foreign worker in helping the management practice operate smoothly. 2.0 OIL PALM NURSERY. After the briefing we were move to the sited. The assistant manager was brought us to visit their nursery site. In Sime Darby they have 2 types of nursery which is single stage and main stage nursery. There are some criteria to provide the effective nursery. The site should be clean up to avoiding competition between weed and seedling to get nutrient and space. Besides that, it also facilitates to be maintenance in order to minimize the pest attack. At the same time the site of nursery should be near to the water resource to provide water during drought session. It is important in a large number of physiological processes. To maintain a growing medium which is kept constantly moist by regular watering but avoid excess application of water, that will result in waterlogging that retardation of the seedling and the seedlings become pale green due to upset of nitrogen In Mentakab plantation were provide drain for their seedling such as main drain and sub main drain for supplies water to the seedling that the capacity about 8 hectare 2.1 PRE-NURSERY In the pre nursery they germinated seeds into the small polybag. The germination should be planted not more than 4 days after the seed arrival but in the Mentakab plantation they provide the seedling by itself. In this pre nursery that have broadness 8 hectare area that can afford to hold 65 thousand seedling. Seedlings are planted from the prenursery into the field nursery at a 1m triangular spacing. Minimum spacing distance for the normal age as too close spacing will result in etiolating as fronds from adjoining palms begin to overlap. Seedlings are to be transferred from the pre-nursery to a specially-prepared site, or field nursery for the remainder of the nursery period. Used in

special circumstances especially where restricted water supply is a major limiting factor. The assistant manager was take initiative to using Overhead sprinkler system
