Activity Warm-up The teacher asks students for words they identify with French food, and writes the words on the board. For words that are in English, the teacher provides the French equivalent. For words that are already in French (eg. baguette, croissant), the teacher explains that they are in fact French words. Les Cornichons Intro Students listen to Les Cornichons twice through. After the first time, the teacher asks students what words they recognized and understood. The teacher makes a list of these words on the board. Les Cornichons Lyrics Students work in small groups to decipher the cognates in Les Cornichons.

Purpose Students begin identifying their prior knowledge of French food, and associating it with real French products, or their English equivalents.

Students negotiate for meaning and use confirmation checks to discover what each other has in their basket.

Students take learning outside of the classroom, and continue to expand their vocabularies.
