Three Must Have Apps for the Kindergarten Classroom Technology Integration

Staff Development Kindergarten Teachers 2 Sessions Approximately 45 minutes

Stage 1 Desired Results


ISTE NETS-T (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations. b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats. d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning. 5. Understandings: Learners will understand iPads have many educational benefits. the use of educational apps can help improve student learning in different content areas. some of the different ways that iPads and apps can be used in the classroom.

Learners will know how to locate and download apps how to use the apps presented in this lesson in a classroom environment

Learners will be able to use iPads as an instructional tool locate and download apps from the App store implement the use of iPads and apps in the classroom

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence


Performance Task: Learners will choose one of the apps presented and implement it in the classroom. They will be expected to share their experiences with their grade level during a follow-up planning period. Other Forms of Assessment: Learners will complete an online survey about the staff development training, the apps covered, and their experience implementing them in the classroom.

Stage 3: Learning Activities


Session 1: Introduction - As a hook, the presenter will play a short YouTube video on iPads. In the video, a group of students demonstrate some ways that iPads can be used to improve student learning. Before starting the lesson, the presenter will make sure that the staff has a good understanding of how to download and install apps.

PuppetPals HD The presenter will introduce and demonstrate how to use the PuppetPals HD app. The presenter will connect the use of the app to a grade level specific standard and share some ways it can be used in the classroom.(students use this app to retell stories or create their own) Conclusion The presenter will show the staff how to locate the resource wiki. The wiki contains information, video tutorials, and tips for each of the apps presented. The presenter will encourage the staff to implement the apps discussed in their classrooms and bring ideas and student created products to share during the next session. The presenter will have the staff locate and download each of the apps presented. The presenter will encourage the staff to explore the apps and try them out. The presenter will review the apps discussed in the previous staff development lesson and have the staff share ideas for implementing the apps and student products. Screen Chomp The presenter will introduce and demonstrate how to use the Screen Chomp app. The presenter will connect the use of the app to a grade level specific standard and share some ways it can be used in the classroom. (students use this app during number talks to explain their thinking, students who have a good understanding of a specific standard can use this app to create a how-to tutorial, the teacher can create a lesson for students listen to and complete during centers, use it to assess student understanding) iTalk The presenter will introduce and demonstrate how to use the iTalk Recorder app. The presenter will connect the use of the app to a grade level specific standard and share some ways it can be used in the classroom. (Students can use this app to record themselves reading. Students can use this app to record themselves doing just about anything. They can go back and listen to their recording.) The presenter will have the staff locate and download the app presented. The presenter will encourage the staff to explore the app and try it out. The presenter will show the staff how to create folders and organize their apps by topic or type.

Conclusion The presenter will remind the staff how to locate the resource wiki. The wiki contains information, video tutorials, and tips for each of the apps presented. The presenter will inform the staff that they will be asked to complete an online survey about the training session, the apps presented, and their experience with implementing the apps in the classroom. Below are the survey questions that the staff will be asked to answer at the end of the training. The feedback from the survey will be used to include areas of training needed and improve the training sessions. The survey was created in Survey Monkey.
