Have you ever been on a street and something just feels right? Its exhilarating. The materials, the landscaping, the buildings, and the activities in the buildings all come together to make a great space, and people naturally follow. To me, thats what urban design is about. Urban designers take all of the individual pieces that go into a place and arrange them into one awesome experience. Urban design doesnt exist in a silo. It requires an understanding of everything from building typologies to local politics. Thats where I come in. I have an education in architecture and city planning, along with work experience in both design firms and local government. Ive designed at all scales, from a CD cover to entire towns and Ive worked with community groups, planners and developers. Thats why Im looking for a position in an organization that is not only committed to good design, but brings together people from different backgrounds and different disciplines to create places worth caring about. After all, its people that make the place. The projects shown in this portfolio include examples of my academic and professional design work, along with some volunteer projects Ive done. They show the variety of experience I possess, along with the passion I have for placemaking. If you like what you see, please contact me using the information below and I would be happy to tell you more. As always, thank you for your consideration.

the story.
We crafted a plan for a 300 hectare (750 acre) new town on the outskirts of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for a Lebanese developer. This project required a thorough understanding of local customs, the Middle Eastern housing market and contemporary projects in the area. I researched designed precedents and developed appropriate street and building typologies for the new town.

the story.
Our studio reimagined Greater Baltimore without the car. We developed a new regional transportation network with 18 transit, bicycle and pedestrian corridors across parkland, disused industrial areas and existing major streets. We also identified areas where we could increase density, giving residents more amenities close at hand. Finally, we developed a wayfinding system of station markets derived from the citys industrial heritage.

the story.
Penn Station is an island, cut off from the city by railyards to the north and by the I-83 expressway to the south. Our proposal reconnects the station to its surroundings by removing I-83, daylighting the river below and making it a public amenity. In front of Penn Station is a new plaza and amphitheatre for hosting existing events like Artscape, an annual free art festival. Behind the station is a new train shed and an intimate, pedestrian-scaled shopping district built over the railyards.

the story.
I developed a form-based code for Campo Sandia, a new town on the edges of Albuquerque rooted in traditional New Mexican building patterns. I designed a site plan for the community, which would include 2,000 homes, office and retail space, and several public buildings and parks. I also produced street and residential building typologies.

City Planning Workshop, Spring 2011 Laureen Boles, coordinator Ho Sung Park, Andy Wang + Maggie Wood, teammates
the story.
For fifty years, Roosevelt Mall has been the social and economic hub of Northeast Philadelphia, but recently it has fallen on hard times. We proposed a retrofit of this auto-oriented, suburban shopping center, re-using existing buildings while adding new uses, including housing, offices and a transit center. The existing street grid was extended into the site, physically connecting the mall to surrounding neighborhoods.

We created a master plan for the redevelopment of the 26-acre Hechinger Mall site with housing, office and retail uses, and several open spaces. My contributions included a site analysis of the H Street neighborhood, creating diagrams of existing amenities and developing the site plan.

typical apartment.
the story.
Vibrant public spaces were the core of our proposal for a mixed-use, mixed-age building. A courtyard and retail activate the street, while above, a wellness center open to residents and the public encourages healthy living. A green roof reduces the urban heat island effect while providing a private space for recreation and relaxation.

This project explores the ability of shared space to bring different communities together. An existing Art Deco building would become a teen center for local youth and a retail incubator for small businesses, while an adjacent vacant lot becomes a neighborhood green.

I designed this CD and cover package for the Faux Paz, my former a cappella group. The theme is derived from the doodles a student might do on notebook paper while bored in class. Loose and playful, the design reflects the groups repertoire of popular song covers.

the story.
I moderated a day-long, walk-in charrette at a neighborhood flea market, intended to generate ideas and visions for the downtown Silver Spring area. Nearly 100 participants gave written feedback on a series of easels, while a team of architects, planners and designers were on hand to sketch out their ideas.
