Unlike startup errors which are indicated by a beeping sound , the blue screen of death (BSOD) can occur at any time when you are working on your computer, without any warning. For example, it can occur when you are moving data between 2 folders and the data will have just disappeared from your hard disk! The common causes for the blue screen of death and the solutions to fix it are as follows: 1. Device driver problems - when new hardware is added to the computer, the device drivers may not be compatible. Try to get the latest updated version of the device driver from the manufacturer website. If it still does not work, remove or uninstall the new hardware and check if the problem continues. 2. New software installed may also cause a problem, so uninstall any new software. Viruses and spy ware can also cause problems, so ensure that you have the latest version of antivirus software installed and check your computer regularly. How to remove all spyware, adware and run a free antivirus program 3.Hardware problems. Computer components like the CPU, fan, RAM start malfunctioning after some time, especially if you use your computer for more than 10 hours a day. Computers with AMD Athlon CPU's generate more heat compared to Intel CPU's and so this problem seems to be more common with these computers. 4. A simple configuration change which I made, after which I never faced the problem of Blue Screen of Death. a) In most computers the RAM memory is shared between the system and graphics - for example , for 128MB , 96 MB is for the system and 32 MB is for graphics (default setting). Reduce the memory for graphics to the minimum - 8 MB b) Change the virtual memory settings My Computer ----> Properties ----->Advanced ------> Performance -------> Advanced ---------> Virtual Memory For paging file size, select custom file size , with initial size 500 MB and final size 1000 MB. Save the settings. You can increase the paging file size further according to the software programs you use. 5. If nothing works, you can always reformat your computer hard disk and reinstall the operating system and software.

Use MSCONFIG to disable some of the programs at STARTUP. Simply uncheck many of them. Of course, you want your anti-virus running. Then get Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy and get rid of Spyware. Get both of the free versions from http://www.download.com If suitable then perhaps you may need a program like MemTurbo (you'll have to google it) to take care of the memory cache. Just my guess. Someone more knowledgeable can give you better answer. Upgrade your video card drivers. Mostly on Desktop computers---DUST collects inside computers, and can cause hardware damage, and overheating, and faulty drives ----Is yours clean????? http://www.makeitsimple.com/projects/cas... Some pictures of them HARDDRIVE: Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed, freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit. My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day. I was watching the HDD activity indicator light, and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking. Mechanical devices do have problems. Hard drive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD. Start XP in save mode. Start 'msconfig.exe'. Go to the startup tab. Disable everything. Reboot. See if it helped. If so, you know where to look. If not, open up your PC. Re-insert all the components. If it doesn't help: download and install (in safe mode if neccesary) the newest drivers for each component (motherboard, chipset, videocard, etc.

Other possibility: check CPU temperature (go to BIOS at startup), install W2K of W2K3 and see if it helps (if not: could be broken hardware ).

Start. Run. Taskmgr 1. Press "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" 2. Launch Run by pressing keys "Start+R" then type taskmgr.exe and press enter. Check out the local security policy of your computer, located under control panel > administrative tools. Check the security tab inside the local policies. This error is caused by restrictions placed in Registry. DisableTaskMgr value is set to 1. To enable Task Manager, try any of these methods: Resolution Method 1 Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste) Method 2 Download and run this REG fix and double-click it. Method 3 Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to: HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System

In the right-pane, double-click DisableTaskMgr and set it's data to 0 Method 4: Using Group Policy Editor - for Windows XP Professional Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK. Navigate to this path User Configuration => Administrative Templates ==> System ===> Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options ====> Remove Task Manager Double-click the Remove Task Manager option. Set the policy to Not Configured. Type gpedit.msc in the run line. Go down to user configuration/administrative templates/system/ctrl-alt-del option In there you will see an option to disable the task manager. Set it to "not configured" and apply it. Go to the website below. Search for "enable the task manager". Download the .reg file and double click it. Similarly search for "Allow wallpaper". http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Go to Start > Run, type in gpedit.msc in the box and click OK. In the Group Policy settings window: Select User Configuration Select Administrative Templates Select System Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options Select Remove Task Manager Double-click the Remove Task Manager option and select Not Configured, click OK, you are done. This is assuming of course you are logged into your administrator account and that you do indeed have the rights to change settings on this computer. That's usually the result of a virus or an spyware app. They don't want you to have access to the task manager and shut their program :) Start with a good anti-virus and anti-spyware program chances are one of them will find stuff that shouldn't be there and get rid of it. Now if after that is done you still can't get the task manager to pop up with ctrl-alt-del then first run RegSeeker, it will scan and repair problems in the registry and that should about do it. Oh and all programs here are freeware.
