Installation Precautions When selecting a site for the Bind-Fast 5, care should be taken to note the following points. 1. The installation site should be level. 2. The room where this machine is used should be provided with good ventilation. 3. Free from any ambient vibration. 4. Away from direct exposure to sunlight. 5. Away from extremely high temperature and humidity. Operating Precautions 1. Keep your fingers or hand away from melted adhesive. When machine is in ready mode the temperature of the adhesive reaches 340F. 2. Maintain proper adhesive level in melt tank. 3. To preserve the quality of the adhesive, keep the Mode switch in Standby mode during periods of nonuse. 4. Do not remove any covers, disassemble or modify the Bind-Fast 5. 5. Keep small object away from machine, to prevent them from falling into machine. Quality of finished product The most important thing for a good and strong binding is spine alignment of stock. To apply adhesive on spine equally, all sheets must touch the Jog Plate. Make sure stock to be bound gets jogged properly and is aligned against the clamp rod on the left side of the carriage. Thickness (weight) of cover stock is from 20# to 110#, up to 10pt cover stock (subject to grain direction and book thickness). After removing finished book from machine, let it sit for about 5 minutes before opening. Keep the clamper and nipper clean, free from adhesive and dust. Do not use any chemicals or solvents.

OPERATOR CONTROLS POWER SWITCH (1)

NOTE: Refer to the component layout page (page 6)

The Power switch controls the adhesive heating elements. A small red light on the switch indicates power is on. Warm-up time is about 15 minutes and is indicated when the green Ready light to the left of the Power switch is on.

MODE SWITCH (2)

STANDBY: This mode is used when the machine is not going to be used immediately. The standby mode keeps the adhesive at a lower temperature to maximize its life. When needed, just switch to Bind mode and wait until the green Ready light comes on (about 3 minutes). BIND: This mode maintains the adhesive at proper operating temperature for immediate use. The green Ready light indicates operating temperature.

ADHESIVE CONTROL KNOB (6)

This controls the amount of adhesive that is applied to the spine of the book. Set the knob from 0-6 depending of the thickness of book to be bound. The more adhesive the operator desires, the higher the number. Experience will help determine the proper settings.

BIND SWITCH (4)

Pressing this switch begins the bind cycle by moving the carriage to the left.

RETURN SWITCH (5)

Pressing this switch returns the carriage to the home (right) position after a bind is completed.

HEATED JOG PLATE (18)

The Bind-Fast 5 is equipped with a heated jog plate that prepares the spine for stronger binds. This is generally not used during padding because it lengthens adhesive set time and lowers productivity. We highly recommend using the heated jog table when perfect binding to produce stronger binds. The jog table will reach the proper operating temperature about 10 minutes after it is turned on. Let the sheets sit on the table from 10-30 seconds before binding. The longer it seats, the stronger the bind.

CARRIAGE LOCKING HANDLE (8)

Turn the carriage-locking handle clockwise to release carriage pressure. The carriage can now slide open freely. Turn it counterclockwise to lock it in place.

NIPPER OPERATING HANDLE (21)

Pulling the handle towards the operator closes the nipper jaws around the spine of a perfect bound book.

NIPPER BLADE ADJUSTING KNOB (20)

This knob adjusts the blades to the spine thickness of the book being bound.

COVER STOP ADJUSTMENT (14)

This stop slides on a scale to properly align the cover to the width of the book to be bound.

PADDING / REPORT BINDING

Specifications: From 2 sheets to 3. Up to 17 spine length. Remove nipper table (optional). This will expose the three cooling fans and automatically set the machine for padding (slow speed).

INSERT PAD MATERIAL

Turn carriage clamp handle clockwise until it locks. Slide open. Jog paper, insert into open carriage and jog to the left side of the carriage against the clamp rod. Slide the carriage closed against the pad stock and turn handle counter-clockwise until it locks.

SET ADHESIVE ADJUSTMENT

For padding, the Adhesive Control Knob is typically set at 2. Pad your first set at 2, then check for proper adhesive. Adjust as necessary to obtain good results.

BIND
Press the Bind switch. The carriage will move to the left across the adhesive and stop over the drying fans. Wait approximately 10 seconds before removing pad.

REMOVE PAD
Grasp finished pad from the top then unclamp by turning handle in a clockwise motion while sliding the clamp carriage out. Remove the pad and place it on a flat surface to continue drying. Press Return switch to send carriage home.

MULTIPLE PAD APPLICATIONS

The Bind-Fast 5 allows padding up to 3 at one time. This can be one 3 pad or six pads, padded together and then split apart when dry. Separator plates allow padding of multiple sets per pass. To install the plates, open carriage to its maximum position. Angle the plates as shown and slide them onto the separator hangers. Paper can now be inserted between the plates to automatically separate the pads. Additional separator plates are available from your dealer.

PERFECT BINDING
Specifications: From 2 sheets to 1 . Up to 15 spine length for Nipper Table. (From 2 sheets to 3 for the Chrome Table). . NIPPER/CHROME TABLE INSTALLATION With the nipper operating handle or the chrome table cover clips facing left, drop the table into place over the drying fans. Place the right side down first, center it and apply slight pressure to seat it. Lower the left side and check to see that the table is properly seating on the bearings.

INSERT MATERIAL
Turn the carriage clamp handle clockwise until it locks. The carriage will now slide open freely. Check that all pages are jogged down against jog table and to the left of the carriage. Slide the carriage closed against the pad stock and turn the handle counterclockwise until the handle locks.

SET ADHESIVE ADJUSTMENT

For perfect binding, the Adhesive Control Knob is typically set at 4. Bind your first book at 4, then check for proper adhesive thickness. If necessary, adjust to a lower number for less adhesive, a higher number for more adhesive.

ADJUST NIPPER TABLE

Note: This adjustment does not apply to the Chrome Table. Gently press down on the drum guard pointer. Turn the nipper jaw adjustment knob until the line on the nipper bar is centered in the V of the drum guard pointer.

INSERT COVER
Adjust the cover stop for proper book width (8 wide book adjust to 8.5). Slide a cover under the cover bar and cover clip. Be sure it is against both the edge stops on the left and the cover stop to the rear. Check the first book for proper registration. Some fine-tuning may be necessary.

BIND
Press the Bind switch. The carriage will move to the left across the adhesive and stop over the cover station.

APPLY COVER
Note: Does not apply to Chrome Table. Immediately after the carriage stops, pull the nipper-operating handle firmly counterclockwise and hold for 10 seconds.

BOOK REMOVAL
Release nipper operating handle. Open the carriage by turning the carriage clamp handle clockwise until it locks. Slide carriage to its maximum opening, then grasp the book from the top and pull up straight and out of clamp. Press Return switch to send carriage to the home (right) position. With the Chrome Table, push and release the Return switch before removing the book.

OPERATOR MAINTENANCE ADHESIVE LEVEL

To add pellets, send carriage to the left by depressing the Bind switch. Pour adhesive pellets into the tank area until the melted adhesive just covers the heating fins. Adhesive pellets should be added when the bottom left end of the tank is visible (the tank slopes down). Low adhesive levels may cause voids on the books spine as well as affecting the quality and strength of bind.

DRAINING ADHESIVE
Over time, adhesive can degrade and also become contaminated with dust, resulting in weak, low quality binds. This is often noticeable by the color of the adhesive. When this occurs, the tank should be drained and refilled with new adhesive. The BindFast 5 must be hot in order to replace the adhesive. Use extreme care to avoid being burned. Press the Bind switch to move the carriage to the left. Lift the jog plate and unplug the heater. Unscrew the two baffle screws, as shown, and remove the baffle plate. Warning: Tank is HOT- Do not touch Place an aluminum tray under the drain plug on the side of the tank. Use a wrench to unscrew the drain plug, and let the adhesive drain into the tray. When the tank is empty (about 10 minutes), replace the drain plug, baffle and jog plate and pour new adhesive pellets into the tank until the adhesive level covers the heating fins. Press Return switch to send carriage to the home position.
