Closed gears / rudder propellers / bow thrusters

Manufacturers of reduction gears, rudder propellers and bow thrusters have demanding requirements when it comes to gear oils. On the one hand, these oils must perform in plain and rolling bearings as well as in gears. Multiple disk clutches may also be part of the design. On the other, reliable operation of the gears will also depend on the tightness of the shaft seals. If the turning shaft or propeller shaft of a rudder propeller or a bow thruster is not sufficiently tight, water may enter the gear oil. In a mineral gear oil, even a low water content may cause rolling bearings failure or damage to the tooth flanks. For the repair of these seals, the ship must normally be dry-docked, leading to high repair costs and loss of turnover. For this reason, Klber Lubrication develops gear oils that are particularly well compatible with the sealing materials used, thus ensuring long seal and gear life. There are four basic types of gear oil composition: mineral oil or synthetic oils such as polyalphaolefins, (PAOs) ester oil and polyglycol oils Synthetic oils offer a number of advantages over mineral oils: High thermal stability and resistance to oxidation Low change of viscosity over temperature Low friction coefficients at teeth Good wear protection in bearings and gears Good load-carrying capacity of bearings and gears Low residue formation

Another key benefit of synthetic oils is the reduction of service intervals. Because lower friction coefficients attained with the synthetic gear oils lead to less friction heat, reducing in turn the thermal stress acting on the lubricant film and the teeth is reduced as well. At the same time, synthetic gear oils have a higher thermal stability; oil aging progresses at a slower pace than with mineral oils. Consequently, oil change intervals can be extended several-fold. This means less impact on the environment and a reduction of operating costs throughout the gears service life. For gears that have to be tightened against sea water (e.g. those of rudder propellers, bow thrusters, special gears in dredgers), the ability of polyglycol oils to absorb water without affecting the load-carrying capacity of the tooth flanks and the bearing life may be of advantage. For the many demanding applications found in gears in the maritime sector, Klber offers a range of oils that meets even the most stringent requirements.

Large gear rim/pinion drives on winches

Open spur gears are often found in hoisting winches, for instance on offshore oil rigs and ships. The requirements to be met by the lubricant have increased in the past few years due to higher winch forces. The winches are usually only operated for a short time, after which the lubricant has to stay on the gear teeth and protect them reliably against corrosion. Unsuitable lubricants do not meet these requirements and have often caused major problems such as fretting or corrosion, possibly followed by gear failure. Having worked extensively with OEMs, we have developed a comprehensive range of products for their application areas. Klberfluid C-F 3 ULTRA is a product we often recommend for open gears on winches. It is a brown-colored operational lubricant for large girth gear drives and is based on a new generation of synthetic hydrocarbons and mineral oil. It is particularly resistant to high pressure and ensures excellent wear protection. Klberfluid C-F3 ULTRA is part of the Klberfluid series. In addition, we offer the GRAFLOSCON series which includes other running-in and operational lubricants based on mineral oil and graphite. Klber offers running-in lubricants for initial gear operation, and our repair lubricants smoothen tooth flanks and reduce residual roughness. Klber repair lubricants remove material from tooth flanks showing a certain degree of damage, thus increasing the loadcarrying percentage.

Pod drives

Ships maneuvering frequently without the assistance of tugs (e.g. offshore suppliers, Ro-Ro ferries) or those that are required to run with a minimum of vibration and noise (cruise ships) are more and more often fitted with pod drives. These pods are mounted to the stern section of the ship and contain the propeller as well as the electric drive motor with a short transmission shaft. Because the pods can be rotated by 360, the ship does not need a rudder and can be maneuvered by turning the pods. While the pod drives offer technical benefits, however a high degree of reliability is essential for their use. Of

particular importance in this context is the choice of the right lubricant for the propeller shaft bearing, thrust bearing, slewing bearing and the elastomer seals at both the turning shaft and the propeller shaft. The correct lubricant will extend component life and help to prevent premature failure, which can help minimize costly repairs as well as loss of revenue by the ship owner. Klber lubricants have been tried and tested in pod drives for several years, contributing decisively to the reliability of drive units in the offshore sector and on cruise ships.

Compressors for process gas and refrigeration

For the reliable operation of compressors, the choice of the right lubricant is of utmost importance. Whether it is process gas or a refrigerant that is being compressed, the lubricating oil used will always have intense contact with the gas. The individual nature of the gas flow found in an application is therefore a crucial criterion for the selection of an oil, on ships as well as on offshore oil rigs or on an FPSO vessel (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading). In all of these applications, availability and reliability of the compressor and the process plant as a whole are of vital importance. The lubrication of process gas compressors sometimes triggers complex and unpredictable reactions. Besides chemical reactions between the gas and the oil, the souring of oil, corrosion and sludge formation, there is also the possibility of gas being dissolved in the oil, which may considerably reduce the oil's viscosity during operation. Such reactions may have various grave consequences for the operator: damage to bearings, rotors, piston rings or valves, corrosion, solid or sludge residues, shorter oil change intervals, high oil consumption, foam formation, or even damage to the downstream process catalyst. In addition, there may be elongated compressor stoppage and hence costly downtime of the production plant as a whole. Consequently, the reliability and the productivity of the process plant depends to a great extent on the selection of the right lubricating oil. When turning to Klber, our customers are in for more than just the supply of an oil. Comprehensive knowledge in chemistry, ample experience with practical applications as well as a program specifically developed for the determination of the solubility of gas in the oil enable the selection of an oil that is specifically suitable for your application. This increases the availability and reliability of the compressor as well as the productivity of the plant as a whole. Klber Summit compressor oils have proven effective in various types of compressors for many years and contributed decisively to the availability and reliability of the plants concerned.

Chains

Being vital machine elements, chains are particularly dependent on optimum lubrication. Klber offers special lubricants tailored to suit local conditions in terms of relubrication intervals, chain cleaning intervals, lubricant quantity and lubrication system. The Klber test rig facility operates a series of chain test rigs to support the development and selection of ideal lubricants. Lubricants help to maintain the value of machine elements, a fact which is especially important when expensive chains are concerned. Premature chain failure is usually due to inexpertly chosen lubricants and inadequate lubrication. Application example for chain lubricants balancing chains on oil rigs The drilling equipment operated on offshore oil rigs is exposed to constant sea level movements. Balancing chains are used to compensate for the upand-down movements, ensuring that they do not affect the drill bits below the sea floor a vital prerequisite for smooth and trouble-free drilling. High loads, micro-movements and extreme

conditions in combination with an unsuitable lubricant can lead to shorter maintenance intervals, extended downtimes, premature component failure and considerably shorter chain life. With specialty products from Klber, these chains will operate reliably and attain their maximum lifetime. Low lubricant consumption helps to reduce operating costs.

Cranes / rolling bearings

Cranes can be found both on ships and in ports. Typical crane lubrication points include open gears in slewing rings, ropes, screws, bolts and pins. Rolling bearings are another important machine element. They meet high requirements in terms of function and service life. The lubricants purpose is to decrease friction and reduce or prevent wear. In maritime applications, water resistance is another key requirement to be met since in many cases the rolling bearing grease is in contact with water.

Water penetrating into the bearing has a negative impact on the greases lubricity and can cause corrosion in the bearing. Optimum sealing and an anticorrosion lubricant are critical in such cases. When selecting a lubricant, its sealing effect is an important criterion apart from lubricity. Be sure to doublecheck compatibility with all materials involved before application. Lubricating greases are considered resistant to water if their constituents (base oil, thickener, additives) neither react to nor dissolve in water. The thickener is critical for water resistance.

Ropes

Ropes are elements often used in conveyors. They are made up of wires which are combined in strands which, in turn, are twisted into ropes. Depending on how they are used, a distinction is made between conveyor ropes (cranes, winches, elevators), stationary ropes (anchor ropes), carrying ropes and sling ropes. Ropes are subject to tensile load. Changes in rope direction result in pressure, torsion and bending loads on the wires. The lubricant has the following tasks: protecting against wear protecting against corrosion ensuring required friction moments (friction pulley ropes)

The lubricant can be applied by brush or special rope lubrication equipment. We recommend using NLGI 1 greases in automatic lubricating equipment. A rule of thumb for lubricant quantity is 1 2% of the rope weight.

Crown gear couplings

Lubricants for crown gear couplings have to meet very special requirements owing to the rotary movements performed by these couplings. An inadequate lubricant can become dry, its individual ingredients can separate, or the lubricant can simply disappear from the housing. Relubrication intervals may then be extremely short. Lubricating oils or greases are used in these applications, depending on the gear design. Oils have the advantage of ensuring a permanent lubricant film on the

tooth flanks because of their backflow behavior, and they facilitate heat dissipation. Lubricating greases generally permit peripheral speeds of up to 35 m/s. Lubricants made by Klber have been successfully used in crown gear couplings on ships for several years. The following Klber products have been approved by important manufacturers:

Twist locks

Twist locks are used on cargo ships to connect the individual containers during transport. They are exposed to salt water and both high and low temperatures. They consist of many individual components, all of which must be operational at all times. A lubricant used on twist locks must ensure reliable corrosion protection, and it must keep the components operational over a long period of time. In addition, relubrication must be easy and relubrication intervals should be long. Together with a twist lock manufacturer, Klber has developed the following solution:

First, use our CONTRAKOR A 100 anticorrosion product on the individual twist lock components, then initially lubricate them with Klberplex BE 11-462 before assembling the parts. Use the spray version of Klberplex BE 11-462 for easy relubrication. With this combination of lubricants, relubrication intervals were doubled from 6 to 12 months.

Lubricating and assembly pastes

In applications subject to extreme tribological conditions, very high surface pressure at low speeds or extremely high temperatures, as well as for running-in processes in the mixed friction regime, lubrication by pastes is often the best choice. Lubricating pastes facilitate the assembly and disassembly of positive and power-locking connections, prevent corrosion and protect against fretting rust, especially when used on friction points subject to oscillations or vibrations. In addition, they allow predefined tightening forces and pretensioning loads, and they help to avoid increased wear under high surface pressure and at low speeds. Pastes also ensure easy and nondestructive component disassembly and perform the function of a dry lubricant or separating agent when exposed to high temperatures.

Application example: Fasteners and screwed joints on exhaust gas lines and turbochargers in Diesel engines that were lubricated with Klberpaste HEL 46-450 prior to assembly can be undone easily and without damage even after elongated exposure to high temperatures. This helps to avoid time-consuming and costly repairs.

Rapidly biodegradable lubricants

A small percentage of the lubricants used in the maritime industry may end up in the sea due to loss lubrication or technical damage. In particular the hydrocarbons contained in mineral oil products may have a toxic effect on bacteria, algae, fish and mammals. Rapidly biodegradable lubricants, by contrast, cause little or no environmental harm in the event of a leakage or due to loss lubrication. When we speak of the biological degradability of a lubricant, we mean its capability to be decomposed by microbes and bacteria into carbon dioxide CO2, water H2O and biomass. Besides biological degradability, minimum quantity lubrication and long relubrication intervals are factors that help to minimize environmental impact. Lubricants on a vegetable basis are often not efficient enough under these aspects, while high-performance lubricants of the Klberbio series have a high resistance to aging and oxidation as long as they are at the friction point. When they leak into a biological environment, however, they are rapidly decomposed by microbes and bacteria. Wherever lubricants may come into contact with sea water, rapidly biodegradable lubricants are an eco-friendly alternative to mineral oil products.
