MOYKES MOOTING MASTER MANIFESTO

WHO AM I?
Hi, my name is Mike Moyke Goodwin and Im running to be master of the moots here at UCLan. Im currently in my second year of the MLaw course, but its my third year here at UCLan after I did a foundation year as a mature student. I aim to make mooting and debating a more central part of the law students experience here at UCLan, like it is at other universities. It is an easy way to gain experience and current awareness, learn research and argument forming skills, and build extra-curricular activities on a CV. Its also a great way to raise the profile of the university, and making the legal world more aware of the caliber of student we have here at UCLan!

WHAT CAN I BRING TO THE ROLE?

Experience! I have knowledge of how moots work from all aspects. I have competed in national competitions, drafted skeleton arguments, helped to organize moots both internally and externally (arranging travel and dates for the ESU moot second round and sorting the venue and date/time for the UKLSA first round), and acted as clerk. So have a broad range of experience in mooting. I am on the mooting and debating module at the moment so have been taught about structure, etiquette and technique in both the disciplines. Confidence! I have also presented a moot to the whole first year cohort, and an audience at the ESU moot in Sheffield, so have confidence in presenting my arguments in front of others! People Skills! Im opinionated but able to be impartial and approachable, making sure that every student that wants to get involved has a fair shot and the full support of the society. Ive been a coach and trainer in every full time job Ive done, so believe I can support and coach our mooting competitors. This also means Ill be able to contribute to committee meetings without stepping on anybodys toes!

WHAT DO I AIM TO DO?

Obviously I would do the things highlighted in the job role, but there is more!! Get a moot and debate shown to the first years and try to engage them in it more by telling them how much it can help them in all aspects of their degree. Try to organise test runs/coaching of competition problems with solicitors and practitioners to help coach and to give tips to people we have involved in mooting competitions. Work closely with the university mooting coordinator/lecturer to make sure that we can get as much support from the law school as possible. Get debates into a more structured format than this year and choose debate topics that are current and relevant to todays law students. Topics like euthanasia have been done to death! Try to arrange some sort of sponsorship or prize for both a mooting and a debating tournament. Publicising the internal tournament which took place this year and helping in the organization of next years event.
