Welcome

2010 International Symposium on Next-generation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology -Measures to Address Climate ChangeMessage from NEDOs Chairman It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 International Symposium on Next-generation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology. Recently, two major international events were held at which topics that are directly linked to this symposium were discussed. The 21st Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP-21) took place in November 2009 and included a discussion of hydrouorocarbons (HFCs), which are non-ozone depleting organic compounds. At the second event, the 15th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP15), held in Copenhagen in December 2009, post-Kyoto Protocol climate change countermeasures were discussed. Air conditioning and refrigeration technology is widely used for room air conditioners, commercial air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers for food storage, and energy-saving heat pumps, all of which help make our lives more comfortable. The air conditioning and refrigeration industry has been working hard to develop alternatives to chlorouorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorouorocarbon (HCFC), and hydrouorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant technology in order to protect the ozone layer and mitigate climate change. Given the recent increase in the use of HFCs, which have a high global warming potential (GWP), the critical need for technology and infrastructure to prevent harmful gases from escaping into the atmosphere is widely recognized. The research and development of environmentally-friendly, next-generation air conditioning and refrigeration technology is also urgently required. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has been funding and overseeing the Development of Non-fluorinated Energy-saving Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems project for the past five years. The aim of the project is to reduce the use of HFCs in response to climate change issues and EU HFC restrictions. Research and development to speed the use of newly developed low GWP refrigerants in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment is being carried out. I hope that the distinguished group of international researchers and engineers gathered here in Japan for this symposium will vigorously discuss a wide range of topics, including market trends and technological perspectives on next-generation refrigerants, air conditioning refrigeration technology that is currently being researched, as well as the results of NEDOs related project. In closing, I would like to thank the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for its cooperation in putting together this symposium, as well the supporting organizations: The Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association, the Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, the Heat Pump and Thermal Storage Technology Center of Japan, and the International Institute of Refrigeration. Symposium Objectives

2010 International Symposium on Next-generation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology

Distinguished researchers and engineers, This symposium is structured around keynote lectures and invited lectures by distinguished researchers, general lectures and poster presentations on the most recent domestic and international research and development, as well as presentations and an exhibition on the results of the research from the NEDO project, Development of Non-uorinated Energy-saving Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems. Enabled by scientific and technological advances, mass production and mass consumption have helped build our modern society and comfortable lifestyles. However, we are now facing serious environmental problems. The air conditioning and refrigeration industry has been working on projects, including the development of alternative refrigerant technology, to address global environmental problems such as protecting the ozone layer and mitigating climate change. With the increased use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a potent greenhouse gas, environmentallyfriendly, next-generation refrigerants, as well as technology and infrastructure to prevent harmful gases from escaping into the atmosphere, are urgently required. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has been promoting the development of technology to apply new refrigerants to refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. As part of NEDOs Development of Non-fluorinated Energy-saving Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems project, the 2010 International Symposium on Next-generation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology was organized to advance climate change countermeasures. It is hoped that this symposium will provide a forum for Japanese and international researchers and engineers working on next-generation refrigerants and heat pump systems to discuss existing technologies, NEDO project results, market trends and technological perspectives on various refrigerants. This gathering of distinguished researchers and engineers offers a unique opportunity to share information, network and contribute to the growth of a very important industry.
