INSIGHT
JUDE L. TAYABEN, MAN PHD IN NURSING EDUCATION

1. MY PERSONAL EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY I believe that my upbringing and my environment influence my behavior. What I actually am today is partly a product of my environment. Furthermore, I meet people from diverse professions. They have distinctive circumstances, requirements, and ambitions. As I interact with these people, they greatly influence my way of life. I honestly believe that knowledge is the groundwork of our existence. Devoid of knowledge, through experiences or through thought processes, there would be no way we could attain our fundamental goals and necessities. I argue that every individual links the roles of being a student and being a teacher all through life span. I believe that every individual desires gaining knowledge, and that satisfying this desire gives a platform where he boldly hones his optimum capability and capacity. I believe that as a clinical instructor, I must enlighten numerous courses for my students to find their own platform. I also believe that it is my responsibility to promote to others the approaches to achieve their potential by embarking confidently on this journey. I also believe that I am obliged to be one with them in this passage, aboard in this journey headed for the platform, in quest of my full potential as a human being.

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School All my truths are grounded in Humanism. With humanism as my foundation, I came to realize that in my profession, a closed mind shows evidence of potential limitations. I believe that opening the mind brings out cultural, experiential, or stagnated behavioral patterns, providing means to discover, experience, and understand. I know that accurate knowledge does not exist in solitude of the mind, body or spirit; and not limited by experience, source or belief. I know that accurate knowledge is derived from understanding oneself and ones relationship with ones existence and potential as a human being. I believe that since we are endowed with the intellectual faculty they are superior to all the other animals. With the intellectual faculty, we have the capacity to determine and direct their destiny in life. We have a purpose, and certain goals and aspirations that they live and strive for. Our existence is geared towards a meaningful and a greater realization of the self and the values inherent in being human. From the humanist perspective, I see limitless prospective for us. We possess the definitive traits of integrity. We acquire the characteristics of culture, history and meaning that our fellows from diverse backgrounds contribute. We possess an inherent decency to develop to intensity ahead of our imagination. We are destined to discover humanity in the course of our intelligence to search for knowledge and truth. I believe that reality is both empirical and spiritual that is what we can see, touch and verify using science

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School and that which we can perceive using other higher and superior faculties like intelligence. I would like to believe that the nature of being human is vested in quality ethical principles of life. The reality of being human can fall shy of this ideal vision. I believe in the autonomy and dignity of every person but at the same time recognize the fact that I am because we are. People around me help me to discover my individuality.

We are basically good but I realize that they are also capable of doing evil and harming other people. I believe that I should always give other people the benefit of the doubt that they are actually good. Such an attitude obviously calls for taking a risk and trusting in other people. A complete and fulfilled life is built on trust. I cannot imagine a life where I cannot trust others while I have to rely on them. At least I can entrust my life to my doctor so that He can keep me healthy. Human beings are always innocent until they prove themselves guilty. In view of the fact that each of us is unique, we each possess the power and capacity to grow and become better persons. I believe that education helps to exploit the potential in us and accordingly make us satisfied in life. I believe that education always makes us steadfast and thus more advantageous to the society. I believe that we desire to learn, and therefore it is my principle to generate a range of milieus encouraging learning. Provided expediency,

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School shared and financial dynamics, and the desire to engage students in the selfbelief that they are themselves at the helm of their lives, I assist students in compiling a toolbox of skills necessary to reach their potential as learners. This toolbox, however diverse, and individually fitted, should include the basic tools of respect, critical thought, which include inductive and deductive logical thought processes, and the ability to relate the learning into practical uses. I believe students should be wholly involved in their learning environment and process.

Although am not presently in the teaching profession, I have come to value so much the fact of a student being able to self-direct themselves while the teacher acts as a facilitator. I believe that group learning also gives an opportunity to share different opinions and points of view on various issues. I would consider integration of various aspects from different models of teaching and learning that would help my students to maximize on their learning. I consider education to be a process rather than a one-moment activity and therefore believe that adaptation to various methodologies as the way to maximize learning. I believe that learners possess different learning abilities and that their learning styles vary with each individual. However, what I believe to be common among each learner is the "desire" to learn, and to be involved in the process from cradle to grave of the endeavor. I believe that learners not only are responsible for their learning, but also wish to be responsible.
4|Jude

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School Understanding these complexities and the diversity between learners, I continually develop new tools that provide learners with opportunities. I create dilemmas for learners to apply the knowledge that they have gained to given situations. I believe in providing and requesting feedback and to open the lines of communication to the point of creating effective dialogue between learners and teachers; the blending of the two becoming apparent as we learn from and teach each other. I encourage critical thought and reflection as well as its evidence in forms that each learner develops. I promote open-mindedness to varying viewpoints, and provide to students not the lessons of conclusion, but the lessons of continuance in regard to learning. What I ask of all learners is that they share the wealth of their knowledge. As I believe people who have benefited economically should give back to those who made it possible, I believe the same in education. Learners who have gained so much in the way of experiences and knowledge should share that with others. Being a learner encompasses other life issues. Learning extensively involves certain sacrifices that may eventually be rewarded, but initially need attention. I believe in developing an environment in which learners may share their resources for meeting their needs, overcoming issues and dealing with being a dedicated learner. I believe in flexible conditions, creating an inclusive rather than an exclusive learning environment.

5|Jude

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School I open my personal toolbox, and explain the culmination of my learning tools for others to see critically. I believe this sets the stage for learners to simulate a tool that I have developed, or to create one of their own. Tools may take the form of tangible items such as time-management items, research tools, and physical learning aids; and, intangible concepts such as selfdirection, methodologies, and self-discipline. I provide the notion of the toolbox as a suggestion; the learners develop their own contents.

I have come to learn from the various courses I have taken in Saint Paul University Manila that education that is learner-centered is more beneficial to the learner. If a particular curriculum is to produce the best results at the end of the day, it must be based on the needs of the learner. It is important therefore to start any course or education activity with assessing the needs of the learner. The environment that I create for students begins with a formal needs assessment of the students, which measures their comfortableness and competency with the subject at hand. This provides me with the definition of the parameters of the course content, the ability to develop challenges for those with a certain mastery of the subject, and the ability to create an environment for those who need to develop initial understandings and skills related to learning the subject. It also provides learners with opportunities which coincide with their given situation and level of competency with the subject.

Change

expansion, and ongoing experiences in working with others have always been an integral part of being a higher education professional. However, it seems that today changes are occurring faster and from so many different directions. Thus, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to determine which change to react or respond to first. At the same time, in higher education new clientele, needs, situations, and financial challenges constantly emerge. This necessitates that the higher education profession must continuously prioritize and re-prioritize time commitments. Often this means letting go of old activities or ways and becoming involved in new ventures and new clientele. This frequently creates an angst on the part of not only the professional, but also current clientele or students who may feel they are being abandoned or short-changed. Thus, as a professional I recognize that I must continually face many changes that affect both me and the students I teach. I must implement programs and services that must change over time. I must constantly find ways to coordinate and collaborate with others, explore partnerships with various groups, and upgrade the content of programs with which I am involved. I believe that education empowers individuals, families, and

communities in so many ways economically and on issues of justice and human rights. I desire to commit myself to this process in order to enable my

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School students realize their full potential in life and therefore be fulfilled and live a full life. I take it upon myself to educate students in all ways possible to discover who they are, where they are, and what they desire to achieve in life. I aim to arouse self-consciousness and help students from all kinds of backgrounds to discover the wealth of potential in them and decide how best they can utilize it. I believe that education is much more than just pursuing a career for financial gains. It is a way of life, all-inclusive aspect of life. Because I believe that education should be learner centered in order to be more productive, my starting point is always trying to discover what the students needs are. From the needs of the student, I plan the lesson so as to meet his or her expectation. Acting as a catalyst, I guide and offer advice to the students towards achieving their intended goals and aspirations. I am committed to be a life long learner seeking knowledge and skills so that I am always well informed and armed with the necessary knowledge to share with other people and to be more effective in my profession. To achieve this I am committed to maintaining dialogue with colleagues in the teaching profession so that I can be in touch with the modern issues affecting the field of education. I am committed to sharing knowledge with other people as part of my contribution to the field of education and the wider society. I am committed to using new and emerging technologies in the delivery of such programs but must be diligent in assuring that by so doing I do not inadvertently eliminate or greatly reduce the accessibility of such programs for

St. Paul University Manila Graduate School people who have limited access to these technologies. This will take constant examination of delivery modes, materials utilized, and access routes made available. I am especially concerned about my increasing use of the Internet, social media, and smart phones as resource storehouses and instructional delivery tools. I am committed as a professional to helping develop a greater appreciation for those common goals and values that make our society a healthy place in which to live and in which the constant need to learn throughout life is recognized as vital to a community's development. This requires championing excellence in all programs with which I am involved and fostering the professional development of all colleagues with whom I have a relationship.
