NEED FOR THE PROPOSED WORK

India is one of the largest producers and exporters of tea in the world. The Indian plantation sector as a whole and the tea industry in particular is in a disarray due to frequent price declines and increase in cost of production owing to hike in fertilizer and pesticide prices and unscientific agricultural practices. Moreover, this problem is aggravated by steep falls in green leaf prices, determined by auction centres, bought-leaf factories (BLF) and other market forces. The condition of small growers in major tea growing areas of India is pathetic, owing to small landholding s and poor quality of the produce.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of the project is to explore and find a value adding proposition for the sustainable growth of the small tea planters in Assam

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE CCS

. Some of the topics we would study in our project are

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Value chain analysis in the various stages of tea production. How to facilitate small tea growers to form primary producer society . Exploring micro financing options particular to this sector. Quality control and technical support from Govt. laboratories and universities. Linking the small tea growers to the Tea Board of India for recognition. Business linkage with the processing factories based on fair terms of trade and exploring the possibility of tea- processing on a co-operative basis. 7. Sustainability issues related to the industry seasonality and other micro level issues.

METHODOLOGY
The project would first look at the existing industry and try to analyze the role of various stake holders and the profit sharing mechanism. It would be followed by in depth interviews with various experts in this field to identify the scope of adding value in respect with the small tea planters.

DETAILED WORK PLAN ALONG WITH TIME SCHEDULE

Interview with experts (1-2 weeks) Analysis of the current industry practices (2 weeks)

Identify scopes of value addition( 2-3 weeks)

Recomendation (2-3 weeks)

Secondary data collection (2 weeks)

EXPECTED OUTCOME
We would like to evaluate different value chain propositions to create a profitable and sustainable mode of income generation for the small tea plant growers.
