Solve all examples, exercises and end-of-chapter problems of Chapter 2 of Ulaby. Review retarded potentials from chapter 10 of Hayt/Buck or, if you wish, chapter 7 of Cheng. Submit the solution of the following problem set only. There is no credit for a correct answer without all steps leading to it. Problem Set 1. For Fun: Evaluate j 2 , (2j3)j , (4+j3)3+j4 , ln(2) and j j , where j = in x + jy form. 1. Express answers

2. Discuss under what conditions a single short or open circuited shunt stub will not be able to match a load with a transmission line. 3. A 150 j50 load is to be connected to a 300 MHz sinusoidal source of 50 j10 internal impedance. Design a coaxial transmission line, to connect the load to source, so that maximum power is delivered to the load. Specify the radii of the inner and the outer conductors, the permittivity of the dielectric used, and the length of the line required. Ignore conductor and dielectric losses, and assume both conductor and dielectric to be non-magnetic (r = 1). Review maximum power transfer theorem. 4. Problem 2-45 of Ulaby. 5. A 60 cm long 50 lossless transmission line is feeding a 200 MHz narrow-band signal to a 75 + j50 load. Attach a shunt stub to this line so that vswr between the signal source and the location of the stub is reduced by 50%. The phase velocity on the transmission line is 2 108 m/s. If it is not possible to solve this problem, explain the reasons. 6. Problem 2-48 of Ulaby. 7. A 10 V dc source with 5 internal resistance is connected to a 100 m long 75 two-wire lossless transmission line (both wires in air) through a switch. There is no load connected to the line. The switch is closed at t = 0. Calculate the total energy supplied by the voltage source. Briey discuss your solution. 8. Problem 2-53 of Ulaby. 9. A TTL ip-op is connected to a signal source through a 5 cm long 50 transmission line. The ip-op presents a 200 impedance to the transmission line. The signal source also has a 75 internal impedance. At t = 0 voltage of the signal source goes from 0 to 5 volts (assume unit step function). The ip-op changes state when its input voltage goes beyond 3.5 V. Assume r = 1 and r = 4 for the transmission line. (a) Sketch the voltage distribution on the line at t = 0.1 109 sec. (b) Sketch the load voltage as a function of time from t = 0 until the ip-op changes state. Assume the ip-op toggles its output when the input voltage goes from low to high. (c) Find the load voltage at t = . (d) What is the maximum frequency of the square wave of the signal source with which this ip-op may be driven? Explain your answer briey.
