The thesis in this essay is explicit. Stephen L Carter clearly states his point in the essay. Although honesty is a virtue of importance, it is a different virtue from integrity. Pg.105 Telling Everything You Know- Honesty is not the same as integrity. For example, when you say something hurtful or share secrets, you are being perfectly honest but you are not showing integrity. Error- Someone with untested or prejudiced beliefs can act on them with complete honesty, but they are not showing integrity. It is immoral not to test one`s most cherished beliefs. Is a chauvinist boss who gives women easier jobs and expects less from them acting with integrity? Honesty and Competing Responsibilities- Honesty is often used as an excuse to avoid responsibility. For example, stating that you dont have to do something and then using that to get out of your duty.

Moreover, when one of the women on his staff does poor work, he does not berate her as harshly as he would a man, because he expects nothing more. And he claims to be acting with integrity because he is acting according to his own deepest beliefs. Compare and Contrast: The entire essay is a comparison between the virtues of honesty and integrity to show that the two are not the same. Honesty is not the same as integrity. It is possible to be perfectly honest and being doing something very immoral. Many people believe that being honest is enough to have integrity but that is not true. Honesty is the easy way of doing things, to have integrity, one must take the extra effort to learn about a situation and consider for themselves what is right and wrong.
