TITANIC 3D
Dir. James Cameron, PG-13
Opens 4/6
James Camerons legendary TITANIC is still the most record-breaking box ofce
success of all time, remaining number one for a consecutive ffteen weeks and
the frst flm to earn more than a billion dollars worldwide. The stunning epic
follows The Ship of Dreams on its disastrous voyage, as drifter Jack and heiress
Rose fall in forbidden love and fght for each other despite obstacles of family and
fate. A devastating saga that employed groundbreaking special efects that still
look incredible today, TITANIC is now restored to three magnifcent dimensions in
theaters around the world. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane,
Kathy Bates and Bill Paxton, and written and directed by James Cameron (AVATAR,
TERMINATOR, ALIENS), TITANIC is a beautiful love story and an action-packed
spectacle with such vast scope that it must be shown on the big screen.

NEW RELEASES
SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN
Dir. Lasse Hallstrom, PG-13
Opens 3/30
From the acclaimed novel by Paul Torday comes a remarkable flm about fy fshing,
faith and love. A fsheries expert is asked by a sheik to bring the sport of fy-fshing
to the desert, and along the way he discovers more about life and love than he
ever thought possible. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom (CHOCOLAT, WHATS EATING
GILBERT GRAPE, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES) and written by Simon Beaufoy (SLUMDOG
MILLIONAIRE, 127 HOURS, THE FULL MONTY), the flm also stars an incredible cast
including Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas. Dont miss this
charmingly quirky story that will make you laugh and move you to tears.
CABIN IN THE WOODS
FANTASTIC FEST PRESENTS: JUAN OF THE DEAD
Dir. Alejandro Brugus
Opens 4/13
Fifty years after the Cuban Revolution, a new one is about to begin. This time around
though, its not Communists taking over its zombies. Filthy, fesh-eating zombies.
The Cuban people face a great challenge dealing with this zombie problem -- a
problem that may or may not have been started by U.S.-backed radical groups
-- but their is hope to be found in procrastinating everyman hero Juan (Alexis
Daz de Villegas). If he can just overcome his lifelong, er, commitment to laziness
Juan might just might be the last great hope for his country and maybe the world
(rather like that other everyman hero named Shaun). More than a mere imitation or
sendup of that other, similarly named zom-com, frst time writer/director Alejandro
Brugus delivers a fresh take thats all his own -- both a rollicking, blood-soaked
homage to George Romeros undead masterpieces AND a keen-eyed cultural
commentary on current state of afairs in Cuba.
CABIN IN THE WOODS
Dir. Drew Goddard, R
Opens 4/13
This collaboration between BUFFY vets Goddard and Joss Whedon has been in the
works for years, shelved due to MGMs fnancial difculties despite rave reviews.
And now you can fnally see it! The flm is an utterly original take on the horror
genre, wickedly subverting all expectations and blowing away crowds at flm
festivals. Yes, a group of remarkably attractive young people go to a cabin in the
woods, and youve probably seen that before - but you cannot possibly anticipate
where this dark, chilling, brilliant flm will go next.

EVERY MONDAY NIGHT AT THE RITZ FOR JUST FIVE BUCKS!
SINGLES
Dir. Cameron Crowe, 1992, PG-13, 99 min, 35mm
RZ 4/9 & 4/16
Beware, thirtysomethings and up: Grunge is coming back. Has been on its way back
for a while now. Why, just look at the Doc Martens and fannel shirts out there on
the streets for proof. And boy, that old Eddie Vedder just killed it in his Portlandia
cameo this year You cant fght the return of the 90s; you can only embrace it.
And if we are to embrace it and to fully educate the younger generations about the
decade, then there is no better place to start than this pop culture time capsule.
Directed by Cameron Crowe (the same guy that gave the world SAY ANYTHING and,
later, ALMOST FAMOUS), SINGLES features a soundtrack that was THE CD to have
in your collection back in the 90s -- Pearl Jam! Soundgarden! Screaming Trees!
And Alice in Chains even have a cameo performance in the flm! And speaking
of cameos, you probably forgot that Eddie Vedder himself shows up, as well as
Bill Pullman, Paul Giamatti, and Jeremy Piven. The flm is also possibly the most
infuential rom-com ever, inspiring a generation of kids to move to Seattle and/or
to hang out in cofeeshops looking for love. So stop living just a so-called life, and
dust of your Docs and come re-live the decade of grunge with us.
GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE
Serge Gainsbourg birthday tribute!
GAINSBOURG: A HEROIC LIFE
Dir. Joann Sfar, 2010, NR, 130 min, 35mm
RZ 4/2
Best-selling comic book artist Joann Sfar delivers an inventive biopic of Serge
(Eric Elmosnino), the famed French singer of songs, lover of women, and smoker of
cigarettes. Born Lucien Ginsburg to Russian-Jewish parents, Sfar follows him from
his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, his transition from painter to jazz musician to
pop superstar, and delves into his many relationships with such legendary beauties
as Juliette Greco (Anna Mouglalis), Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin
(Lucy Gordon). All the while Sfar employs a surrealistic style a bit reminiscent
of fellow director and countryman, Michel Gondry, and of course theres a killer
Gainsbourg-saturated soundtrack that acts like a time capsule of 60s Paris.
THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY
Dir. Jonathan Furmanski, 2010, NR, 89 min, digital
RZ 4/23
The story of Clarence Reid, a Miami musician who wrote and produced romantic and
spiritual songs for some of the greatest Southern soul and R&B acts of the 1960s
and 70s. He is also the gonzo performer Blowfy, a freaky alter ego and the original
X-rated rapper. Now 69 years-old, with a gold-spangled superhero costume and
a catalog of the worlds raunchiest tunes, Blowfy tours the world, struggling for
success and recognition after 50 years of making music. A thoughtful examination
of Clarences personal and professional contradictions (despite his stage persona,
he remains deeply religious and substance-free), THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY
explores his legacy and celebrates his musical and cultural signifcance as a
rapper and soul music legend.
COLOR ME OBSESSED:
A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS
Dir. Gorman Bechard, 2011, NR, 123 min, digital
RZ 4/30 w/ Director in person!
Eschewing a VH1 Where are They Now? approach, director Gorman Bechard
tells the story of the infuential 80s indie-rock band, The Replacements, instead
through the eyes of the bands friends, fans, and contemporaries. Dubbed the last
best band by Spin Magazine, The Replacements live shows could be miraculous
or downright disasters, and while they amassed critical accolades and a cult of
devoted fans, the band never quite achieved the commercial success that seemed
at times within their grasp. Combining over 140 interviews with rockers (like Colin
Meloy of The Decemberists, Craig Finn of The Hold Steady), journalists, and fans
both famous and not, Bechard delivers the obsessive tale of the most infuential
band you may have never heard of -- or, to the already devoted, one of the greatest
rock bands of all time.

SLEEPAWAY CAMP
Dir. Robert Hiltzik, 1983, 88 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/10
People like you and me have no sex and watch a lot of horror flms. Ive truly
seen more monster movies than Ive eaten vegetables, and out of the thousands of
slashers and trashers that Ive ingested, SLEEPAWAY CAMP is absolutely, inarguably,
unwaveringly The Very Best Horror Movie of All Time. This statement is made with
absolutely no hyperbole or exaggeration. From the very frst minute, its a deeply
unholy avalanche of pre-teen profanity, pedophiliac inanity, and gut-ripping
insanity. A relentlessly brilliant, perfectly balanced, extra chunky stew of humor
and severe misanthropy, the shock ending of this mind-strangling wrecking ball
of adolescent stab-lust will send you screaming to the grave! NOTE: If you reveal
the closing scene to any frst-time viewer before this screening, we will shake a
beehive and then force it up your rear end live on stage. Thats a goddamn promise.

TERROR TUESDAY
THE TOOLBOX MURDERS
Dir. Dennis Donnelly, 1978, 93 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/3
When independent flm studios saw how much money could be made of one
simple chainsaw massacre, they began a mad scramble for the next winning
combination of hardware and carnage. Over the next several years, gore warriors
would take in such late-night penetration fantasies as DRILLER KILLER, NAILGUN
MASSACRE, SLEDGE HAMMER and even WOODCHIPPER MASSACRE. But none of them
come close to the sincerity, vigor and high-impact lowbrow artistry of THE TOOLBOX
MURDERS. This mighty example of scum-level flmmaking was released at sleaze
cinemas apex, when both the exterior and interiors of the human body were most
vigorously displayed on screen. Hard luck drive-in legend Cameron Mitchell (RAW
FORCE) stars as a rampaging, kill-crazy landlord whose greatest pleasure in life
is ending everyone elses. Equipped with one of those boxes with tools in it --
what are those things called again? -- he travels from room to room in a savage,
conscience-free rage-trance, treating his renters the way the Kool-Aid man treats
a brick wall. (Zack)
THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES
SPONSORED BY VULCAN VIDEO EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT AT
THE RITZ FOR JUST A BUCK!
THE INCUBUS
Dir. John Hough, 1982, 93 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/17
Unlike other 80s satano-slashers that only play at being sexist and gratuitously
savage, THE INCUBUS genuinely walks the walk. Filmmaker Hough was already a
veteran traumatizer after 1973s THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, but this movie chews
a hole into horrors underbelly and suckles on its small intestine. Venerable actor/
director John Cassavetes shook of some of his hard-earned credibility to star in
this acutely harsh tale of a vicious demon that kills women using the most vile
weapon on earth: a WIENER. Cassavetes plays a concerned doctor who spends
entire scenes hollering about the victims ruptured uteri. Jeesh, John...its already
difcult enough to be a lady in this movie without that kind of low class talk. Come
to think of it, this Canadian shockblast is probably the most misogynistic flm in
Terror Tuesday history. Whooops. (Zack)
THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES
Dir. Robert Fuest, 1971, 94 min, PG, 35mm
RZ 4/24
Almighty morbidity-master Vincent Price lowers the iron fst of vengeance in this
dark, brilliant and unexpectedly hilarious assault on humanity. Dr. Anton Phibes
is believed killed in an auto accident while racing to his dying wifes side. After
spending years in secret among his robots and countless torture devices, he
unleashes dazzlingly macabre plots to creatively annihilate the nine surgeons
who failed to save his true love. Though he doesnt physically utter a single word
onscreen, Phibes is arguably Prices single greatest character, a seething, morally
berserk mastermind whose mutilated body mirrors his twisted noodle. The flm
itself is impossibly gorgeous; almost every shot is composed as a perfect work of
art, even when acid is dripping on fesh or locusts are devouring corpses. Jonah Hill
and NORBIT have both been nominated for Oscars and this movie wasnt. So if you
still believe in God, youre just not paying attention. (Zack)

FREEZE BOMB
Dir. Al Adamson, 1978, 90 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/11
If you have a medical condition that makes it unwise for you to laugh your ass
BOMB could be your grim reaper. This Al Adamson Bond ripof may well be the
worst action movie ever made not starring a chimp, a midget or Lorenzo Lamas.
Jim Black Belt Jones Kelly and Myron Bruce Lee (Myron?) are the kung fu fghting
heroes out to stop a supervillain named The Pig from developing the freeze bomb
which turns victims into ridiculous looking snowmen. Along the way Kelly and Lee
have to deal with various double-dealers and scumbags who are also after the
secret formula. With George Lazenby, Aldo Ray, Terry Moore, and Harold Oddjob
Sakata as The Pig. Oh yeah, theres a mean-ass snapping turtle too. If you miss
this one you better have a doctors note. For real. (Lars)
WEIRD WEDNESDAY
BARBED WIRE DOLLS
SPONSORED BY I LOVE VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT
THE RITZ FOR JUST A BUCK!
BARBED WIRE DOLLS
Dir. Jess Franco, 1976, 78 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/4
Jess Franco and Lina Romay were the ultimate power couple of exploitation
flmmaking. Together they made over 100 feature flms, mostly sexploitation and
horror. His partner and muse, Lina Romay was more than just a gorgeous, sexy,
frequently nude actress. She frequently co-wrote the dialogue, helped direct the
actors and edited the flms. Their adventurous life took them all over, making
cheap, subversively brilliant movies for back-alley adult theaters, hanging out with
jazz musicians and artists, eating in the best restaurants and living the ultimate
creative, bohemian life. Lina Romay died this year at age 57. In tribute to her we
present one of dozens of Women In Prison flms she and Jess made. BARBED WIRE
DOLLS stands out from the pack particularly because Francos hand-held zoom-
lens camera work is so unusual, almost avant-garde. Also, in between showers,
punishments and cat-fghts we get Linas fashback sequence in which Jess plays
her father. It was intended to be a slow-motion sequence, but they couldnt aford
the special camera, so they just move really slow. Mindblowing! (Lars)
SOMETIMES AUNT MARTHA DOES DREADFUL THINGS
Dir. Thomas Casey, 1971, 95 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/25
Our explorations along the fringe of world cinema have led us to some strange
places: Indonesia with its anti-colonial mythic avengers, the Philippines with its
low-budget action and gaudy textiles, Nigeria with its camcorder excursions into
ludicrous high drama; but closer to home theres a country with a flm making
culture as weird as any of those. That country is Florida. OK, maybe its more of a
state than a country per se, but trust us, they make some crazy ass movies. And
with the possible exception of THE WIZARD OF GORE none is stranger than this one.
Some guy named Abe Zwick stars as a brutal transvestite whose odd, codependent
relationship with his (apparently heterosexual) roommate Stanley turns murderous
whenever Stanley brings a girl home. Theres a lot of blood and mayhem but the
tone is oddly like a John Waters movie only with more palm trees. This one is really
strange and really recommended. (Lars)
INGA
Dir. Joseph Sarno, 1968, 81 min, R, 35mm
RZ 4/18
Theres a whole alternative system of auteurs in the exploitation world. Youve
probably heard of some of them - Russ Meyer, Ed Wood, H.G. Lewis - but there are a
number of underappreciated artists who worked in the feld as well. Joe Sarno was
kind of the Ingmar Bergman of sex movies. His plotlines are unexpectedly deep
and there are undercurrents of psychological insight and magic. His early flms
were made in Long Island and are largely about suburban intrigues and malaise.
Starting with INGA, Sarno relocated to Sweden. This changed things substantially.
First of, the actresses became much, much more beautiful. Sex flms in America
are fne, but the performers are likely to be teenage runaways or hardened vets.
Not so in Sweden, where there was less stigma attached to appearing in sex flms.
INGA is a story of sexual awakening and discovery in the Sarno mold. He never
relies on fesh alone to titillate, he creates really sexy situations and relationships.
Featuring cult-favorite sex-goddess Marie Lilljedahl, whom you no doubt know
from EUGENIE, THE STORY OF HER JOURNEY INTO PERVERSION. (Lars)

STUDIO GHIBLI RETROSPECTIVE
BRAND NEW RESTORED + SUBTITLED 35MM PRINTS
PORCO ROSSO
Dir. Hayao Miyazaki, 1992, PG, 94 min, 35mm
SL 4/6-4/12
Set during the political volatility of between-the-wars Italy, Hayao Miyazakis
animated 1992 adventure Porco Rosso introduces an unlikely hero: a portly,
chauvinistic seaplane pilot with the head of a pig and the heart of Rhett Butler. The
snout grew courtesy of a mysterious curse, but the heart, like Rhetts, beats for only
one woman: a sexy chanteuse who runs a popular resort on the Adriatic a foating
Ricks Caf. Once an ace fghter pilot, Porco has deserted from the Italian military
(Id rather be a pig than a fascist, he explains) and now works as a freelance
bounty hunter and scourge of aerial pirates. Originally intended as a short in-fight
movie for Japan Airlines, Porco Rosso harks back nostalgically to Hollywoods
romanticized fyboys and looping dogfghts. Muting adult concerns like the
jackboots of fascism and the ubiquity of male violence with marshmallow clouds
and subtly shifting light, Mr. Miyazaki smooshes fantasy and history into a pastel-
pretty yarn as irresistible as his feminism. (Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times)

KIKIS DELIVERY SERVICE
Dir. Hayao Miyazaki, 1989, G, 103 min, 35mm
SL 3/30-4/5 : RZ 4/13-4/16, 4/18
Veteran animator Hayao Miyazaki directs this buoyant childrens adventure yarn
about a young witch striking out on her own. At her mothers behest, 13-year-
old Kiki sets out on a year-long apprenticeship with her black cat in tow. With a
shaky command of her broom, she ends up in a charming little coastal town that
looks like a cross between the French provincial and San Francisco. Unfortunately,
the local hotels have a strict no witches policy and the police have taken a dim
view of her recent aerial mischief-making. Shes saved from the street by a kindly
bakers wife, who ofers her room and board in exchange for her delivering by
who fusses over her, and a boy her same age who is nursing a massive crush. All is
well until she wakes up one day and realizes that she cant make her broom levitate
nor can she talk to her cat. What will Kiki do? (Jonathan Crow, Rovi)

ONLY YESTERDAY
Dir. Isao Takahata, 118 min, 35mm
SL 4/13-4/19
A touching, melancholy meditation on the life of the same woman at ages 10 and
27. With the subtlety of a novel, it shows a working woman on vacation, going to a
relatives farm, where shes not really wanted, and remembering with bittersweet
sharpness her childhood, when life was still ahead. Notice the way Takahata uses
stillness, silence and a long pause in an early sequence where the little girl sees a
boy she likes and realizes he likes her, too. (Roger Ebert)
THE CAT RETURNS
Dir. Hiroyuki Morita, 2002, G, 75 min, 35mm
SL 4/20-4/26
After high-school student Haru rescues an elegant black cat from being hit by a
speeding delivery truck, the awkward teenager fnds her locker inundated with
gift-wrapped mice and her desk inscribed with crayoned cat-hieroglyphs. It turns
out that the feline in question was Lune, Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and following
a visit from the ultimate aristocat the Cat King himself! Haru is plunged into
the cats underground realm, where she fnds that the hardest part of growing up is
staying yourself quite literally, when her body starts to take on an unmistakably
feline cast. Alice in Wonderland meets The Metamorphosis with the never-fails
kawaiifactor of cat-anthropomorphism in the debut feature by second-generation
Ghibli animator Hiroyuki Morita, which carries over the popular character of The
Baron (a debonair, top-hatted cat fgurine come to life) from the studios 1995 flm
Whisper of the Heart. (TIFF)
STUDIO GHIBLI RETROSPECTIVE
PRINCESS MONONOKE
Dir. Hayao Miyazaki, 2001, PG, 125 min, 35mm
SL 4/27-5/3
This exotically beautiful action flm features gods and demons locked in a struggle
for the future of the unspoiled forest and an elaborate moral universe that Mr.
Miyazaki has created. As such, it is a sweeping, ambitious version of the comic-
book storytelling that engendered it. Frequent battle scenes, graphic enough to
make a sharp distinction between Princess Mononoke and animation made for
children, keep the story in motion. These are often breathtakingly rendered, but it
is the flms stirring use of nature, myth and history that make it so special. (Janet
Maslin, The New York Times)
MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS
Dir. Isao Takahata, 1999, PG, 104 min, 35mm
RZ 4/6-4/12
This rarely-seen gem is a considerable departure for Studio Ghibli in terms of both
style and story: not only does this gently humorous domestic comedy eschew
the wild fights of imagination of Miyazakis fantasies or the historical gravity of
director Isao Takahatas acclaimed Grave of the Firefies, but its comic strip-style
animation (distinctly diferent from the traditional Ghibli style) was also created
entirely on computers, making it the frst Ghibli flm to be made without traditional
hand-drawn animation. In a series of titled vignettes such as A Family Crisis,
Marriage Yamada-Style and Patriarchal Supremecy Restored, Takahata takes
us into the daily lives of the Yamada family, which includes father Takashi and
mother Matsuko, four-year-old daughter Nonoko, annoying older brother (is there
any other kind?) Noboru, wise Grandma Shige, and family dog Pochi. Interweaving
the familys everyday life lessons with whimsical fantasy sequences, My Neighbors
the Yamadas is a delightfully ofbeat example of Ghiblis focus on the intricacies of
human relationships and the intersections of past and present. (TIFF)

drama and wearing some of the most ridiculous period costumes youve ever seen.
Well be poking fun at the pomp and pageantry of the upper class and the rugged
stoicism of the lower class. Upper lips will be stifened, telegrams will be received,
and newspapers will be ironed. Again, we cant tell you the name of the show were

alike. Come get classy with Master Pancake on this special Monday-only show.

SEX AND THE CITY
Dir. Michael Patrick King, 2008, R
RZ 3/30, 3/31, 4/6, 4/7, 4/13, 4/14
Break out the cosmos and start reading Cosmo because were fnally going to rip
apart one of the most requested Pancake movies ever: SEX AND THE CITY (2008)!
Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, the flm follows the tribulations of our four heroines:
personality type: promiscuous, easy, trampy, and brothel-ready. To round out the
Hudson, fresh from her 7th place fnish on American Idol and still rocking a perm!
For those of you who never thought youd be interested in seeing this movie (Im
looking at you heterosexual men) think of it as GHOSTBUSTERS for women. The
four main characters wear ridiculous outfts, romp around NYC, and are always
getting slimed. For those of you who love this movie, its an excuse to see it all
over again, but with special humorous Pancake commentary added. Whatever your
reason for coming, Master Pancake will turn this into a hysterical night you wont
forget. (John)

JURASSIC PARK
Dir. Steven Spielberg, 1993, PG-13
RZ 4/27, 4/28
Hold on to your butts as Master Pancake reprises one of their most enduring
rifs: JURASSIC PARK (1993). The early 90s was a simpler time, when cerebral
character actors like Sam Neill and Jef Goldblum could play action heroes, bad
motherfathers like Samuel Jackson could play nerdy computer geeks, and dinosaur
special efects were created using cool stop-motion models and animatronics
instead of CGI. We at Master Pancake love that era, but we also think its a little
ridiculous. Thats why weve dug up JURASSIC PARK and genetically reconstructed
it with a healthy dose of Master Pancake commentary mixed in. Come see the
results. Chaos is sure to ensue. (John)

Man, this is one of those movies that you dont just quote-along with when youre
watching it; if youre at all like me you quote this movie every day, all through
your regular life, and at times you forget that some of the things you say all the
time are actually from the movie. Well from now on, that aggression will not stand,
Quote-Along and we cant wait to see all of our Little Lebowski Urban Achievers

Action Pack: 80s MOVIE ANTHEM Sing-Along
RZ 4/5, 4/12, 4/19 : LC 4/14, 4/25, 4/26
The 80s were a great decade for music--more specifcally, the marriage of
music and movies never seemed more right. 80s movies changed our lives one
montage at a time and made us fall in love. Whether it was Kevin Bacon cutting
loose to some Kenny Loggins or Rocky pumping up to beat Drago with Hearts
on Fire blaring, this music invoked so much emotion out of their downright
ridiculous lyrics and synth-pop beats that we couldnt help but feel invigorated.
And invigorated we were. We were so jazzed up that were assembling all of our
favorite movie songs and clips to play back-to-back-to-back in what can only be
deemed an inspirational overload. Seriously, this music makes you feel like you
can climb a mountain and knock out Bigfoot with one triumphant fsticuf to the
air. Well be holding out for a hero as we lament about our 9-to-5, and then we
can all take to the aisles as we dance magic dance. So, throw on your favorite 80s
gear, grab a tambourine, and prepare to sweat because thats the power....thats the
power of love! (Greg MacLennan)

SUPER TROOPERS Quote-Along

Littering and? Littering and? Littering and?
In 2001, the boys at Broken Lizard realized that America had been missing
something we couldnt live without anymore. This was before RENO 911, remember,
and in those dark days of the early millennium, it had been more than seven years
since the fnal POLICE ACADEMY movie. People were starting to forget that law
enforcement in this country is run by a bunch of lovable schlubs who like to prank
each other, steal drugs from the stash they confscated, and totally hook up with
each other in all sorts of awesome places (like the back of a police car). But then
we got to see a car full of stoners on their way to Canada pulled over when they
were already pulled over and couldnt pull over any further, and we knew the world
would be safe for cop comedy once again. With this SUPER TROOPERS Quote-Along,
of course, were hoping to make it dangerous...

Man, I wish Id worked in a country club for at least one summer during high
school or college. Ive never even liked golf all that much, but I defnitely would
have learned if I could have had a summer like this. Not only do you get to hook
up with the rich hot girl whos visiting from New York, but you get to be friends
with Chevy Chase back when he was an endearing sarcastic blowhard, you get to
hang out with Bill Murray, and you get to win a college scholarship with the help
of explosions! Come on! So maybe working at a real country club isnt like that at
all, but it sure should be. CADDYSHACK shows us everything that an 80s movie can
be, complete with the old windbag who doesnt like the kids and misfts who just
want to have fun, the random shots of boobs when you least expect them, and, of
course, quotable line after quotable line. Well have all the best ones subtitled for
these shows, plus special props (Baby Ruth, anyone?), surprises, and well start

Dir. Mel Stuart, 1971, G, 100 min
SL 4/29
Gene Wilder is Willy Wonka. PERIOD. No amount of remaking, re-imagining, or
rebooting will ever change the playfully haunting performance of one of the
worlds greatest actors. That being said, this movie never stops being amazing.
When you were a kid it was all about how awesome it would be if you could eat
a gummy bear the size of your face or drink from a river made of chocolate. Then
you got older and you were nostalgic about that stuf while also seeing all the
cracks of creepy shining through in this fantastically fun movie musical. Well, The
Action Pack is pulling out all the stops with little surprises around every corner...
but nothing too dangerous. Bubbles for everyone, bubbles, bubbles everywhere,
candies to eat along with the kids on screen, singing, quoting, and so much more.
Wed hate to ruin it all for you, so sign the contract at the bottom line and youll
be in a world of pure imagination...if you truly, wish...to be. (Greg MacLennan)
90s ULTRA-MIX Sing-Along

from previous decades and then called them their own creation, MMMmmbop,

a theme when you can celebrate the greatest decade the world has ever seen?
The Action Packs 90s Ultramix Sing-Along? If youve never been to a Sing-Along
before, this is as perfect a time to break yourself of that bad habit as any. Well
be assembling a show of all of our favorite music videos from the 1990s, and
painstakingly subtitling them all by hand so that you can follow along and belt
out your favorite hits in the theater. Its a little like karaoke, but you don t have to
go on stage in front of everyone....unless you want to. Because almost all of the
Action Pack Sing-Alongs tend to become full on theatrical dance parties as people
inevitably leave their seats behind and seek out open space on the foor to really
get their groove on. Well be moving through everything from R. Kelly to Counting
Crows, so we dont expect that youll need your chair at all. Still, its nice to have a
home base to order more drinks from. (Henri Mazza)

FANTASTIC FEST PRESENTS
OLDBOY
OLDBOY
Dir. Chan-wook Park, 2003, R, 120 min, 35mm
RZ 4/20 - 4/23
Vengeance dominates the modern action cinema, but to be a work of art, a revenge
flm needs to give you something more than your sadistic jollies. It needs to show
the cost of revenge to the revenger, to innocent bystanders, and to society which
cant survive if injustice goes unpunished but also cant survive if individuals
routinely take matters into their own hands. I have found my great vengeance
director now in Park Chan-Wook. Before we have the faintest idea whats going on,
we meet Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-Sik), an ordinary Seoul businessman in the throes
of an epic bender on his young daughters birthday: The jump-cuts as he raves
in the police station capture his fractured perception and portend the horror to
come. Released, Oh Dae-Su staggers into the rainy night, phones his daughter, and
then disappears ending up in another prison, a private one in which food is shoved
through a hole in a door and sleeping gas pours in through the vents. He screams
and bangs on the door: Why is he there? Oh Dae-Su learns from a TV set that his
wife has been murdered and that his blood and hair were found at the scene. He
has been framed -- but by whom? He slices into his arm to mark each passing year,
and there are 15 slices before he wakes to fnd himself on the roof holding a man by
the tie. Obviously, this sort of taboo-fouting imagery isnt for everyone, but Parks
vision is all of a piece. He came of age in a period of South Korean upheaval, and in
his work theres a pervasive distrust of authority combined with a pervasive lack of
faith in individuals -- most of whom appear to have been warped beyond salvation
by an unstable society. OLDBOY is a movie where you think youre in hell from the
frst frame -- but have no inkling of the infernal circles to come. It says the only
thing worse than not getting revenge is -- getting revenge. (David Edelstein, Slate)

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE
Dir. Chan-wook Park, 2002, R, 129 min, 35mm
RZ 4/27 - 4/29
Desperate to pay for his beloved sisters kidney operation, Ryu kidnaps his
wealthy boss daughter. Nothing goes according to plan, however, and what ought
to have been easy money soon turns into blood money. Thats just the start of
this supremely gritty hardboiled thriller set in Asias underground world of illegal
organ transplants. After the kidnapping goes awry, Ryu and his girlfriend struggle
to avoid Ryus old boss, whos determined to take an eye for an eye. Director Chan-
Wook Park says he wanted to create a hard-boiled Asian thriller that eschewed
the overblown visual excess of recent Korean eforts in favor of a darker, more
realistic delivery. As a result, everything here is saturated in the believable (and
the bloody). Brutally nihilistic, this is without out a doubt one of the best flms to
come out of Korea.
LADY VENGEANCE
Dir. Chan-wook Park, 2005, R, 112 min, 35mm
RZ 5/4 - 5/6
After being wrongfully convicted of kidnapping and murdering a young child, a
beautiful young woman (Lee Young-ae) is imprisoned for 13 years and forced to
give up her own daughter. While in prison she gains the respect and loyalty of
her fellow cellmates, all the while plotting her vendetta on the man responsible
(OLDBOYs Choi Min-Shik). Upon her release she sets in motion an elaborate plan
of retribution, but what she discovers is a truth so horrifying, even revenge doesnt
seem punishment enough. The fnal flm in director Park Chan-wooks acclaimed
Vengeance Trilogy, and like the two other flms of the series LADY VENGEANCE is
And yet, for all those sensational aspects, LADY VENGEANCE observes the toll of

YEE-HAW! JOIN US IN CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF OFF-CENTERED
FILM, FOOD AND BEER!
OFF-CENTERED FILM FESTIVAL
4/19 - 4/21
Once a year The Alamo teams up with Dogfsh Head Craft Brewery for a magical
weekend of craft beer, gourmet food and quality flm. We call this crazy marriage the
Of-Centered Film Festival and this April were celebrating 5 years of wedded bliss.
When it came to fguring out how to celebrate this milestone anniversary, after much
deliberation (read: many beers) we thought we could have a lot of fun with a Western
theme- so here we are! Over the past years, the fest has grown and morphed into
one of Austins premier beer community events, and we hope that youll join us for
the festivities!
We are kicking the fest of with a Rolling Roadshow in downtown Austin featuring
a BLAZING SADDLES Quote-Along complete with free beans, cap guns and plenty of
pies! In addition, all of our friends from the Central Texas brewing community will be
out in full force showcasing their most extreme, new, vintage and rare brews. There
will be even more amazing libations here than last year because the local beer scene
has blossomed so much in the last 365 days! Count on washing down all the amazing
native beers with a scoop from the big pot of beans that well have stationed in front
of the screen to best help you live that one scene from Blazing Saddles. You know
the one.
At this years festival, were also going to have the best Spaghetti Western feast weve
ever pulled of. Were screening the Sergio Leone 1968 epic ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE
WEST along with a VERY special portfolio tasting from Dogfsh Head. Alamo Executive
Chef John Bullington will create the best Italian food youve ever had to go with each
of these distinctive beers and rugged good looks of Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda.
Whoever says that wine is the proper beverage to go with a nice meal hasnt been
paying attention.
The short flm competition is a time for flmmakers and beer enthusiasts alike to
come together to fnd common ground. As always, each entry had to include Dogfsh
Head and be generally of centered, and this year each entry also had to have a
western twist. With so much room for interpretation, there is always some pretty wild
stuf on screen that youre going to want to see with a crowd!
The OCFF screenings are always a blast and this year in addition to being loaded
with high ABV beers well also have some VERY special guests on hand to help us
maximize the fun. More on that in due time. Believe.
Dont miss this landmark anniversary of of-centered beer and of-centered flm!
It is certain be a doggone rootin tootin good time for city slickers and cow pokes
alike. Emphasis on tootin. (john gross)

qualities werent enough, heres the kicker (literally!): he will always, without fail,

Dir. David Zucker, 1988, 85 min, PG-13, 35mm
RZ 4/15
FACT: Leslie Nielsen was the all-time # 1 supreme force of pure comedic hammin.
Unfortunately, he and the rest of the world didnt realize it until 1980s Airplane,
when he was already 54 years old. From that point forward, the late, great, white-
topped funnyman made up for lost time in a big way, slinging goofball gags at every
opportunity. Here, he reprises his square-jawed everyman hero Lt. Frank Drebin
from the hilarious but doomed Police Squad TV series. In a race against crime, hell
alienate, embarrass and/or destroy every person, place and thing within 50 miles
of downtown Los Angeles. Youll also enjoy the wacky antics of a talented young
actor named O.J. Simpson. The also-late, also-great Ricardo Montalban appears
as the billionaire crime lord plotting to kill the queen of England. Priscilla Presley,
George Kennedy and baseball icon Reggie Jackson round out the cast. But more
importantly, Weird Al Yankovic is in it! ZZANG!!!
Box Wine Cinema: SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY
Dir. Joseph Ruben, 1991, R, 99 min
SR 4/12 : LC 4/22, 4/26
Theres very few times you can feel superior to Julia Roberts. But drinking box wine
while watching SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY is certainly one of those times. After
all, did you marry a total psycho (with an admittedly awesome mustache) who is
so obsessed with you, you had to fake your own death? No, you did not. But Julia
did! And now shes in a mess of trouble! And the only person who can help her is
a guy with really huge 80s hair. Honestly, its tough to say which appears more in
this movie: hair or hairy situations. While you sit back and relax in your Alamo seat,
sipping on delicious cheap wine, Julia will be struggling to build a new life for
herself in the shadow of her dark, tragic past. Within the thriller genre, SLEEPING
WITH THE ENEMY is a slightly shallow imitation of the real thing, but, just like boxed
wine, it still packs a hell of a punch. (Sarah Pitre)
Big Screen Classics: COOL HAND LUKE
Dir. Stuart Rosenberg, 1967, 126 min, DCP
LC 4/9 - 4/12 : SLA 4/23 - 4/26
Everyone knows the line, What we have here is a failure to communicate. Even
if you think it comes from some Guns n Roses song and not COOL HAND LUKE,
its burned into your brain. And you may have heard about the hard-boiled egg
scene and that George Kennedy won an Oscar. All of those are fne reasons for
knowing COOL HAND LUKE, but the real reason to see it again (especially on the
big Alamo screen) is because of Paul Newman. Even though he had a career flled
with brilliant work in classic flms like HUD and THE HUSTLER, this is -- without
question -- the defnitive Paul Newman movie and performance. Most Hollywood
movies about anti-authority fgures often lack authenticity because, well, theyre
from Hollywood, but COOL HAND LUKE is the real thing because Newman was the
real thing, a guy who gladly and purposefully did things his own way, even at the
risk of his career. It became one of his defning features and one of the things
that endeared him to audiences, especially when LUKE was released in 1967, and
it holds up today as a testament to not only a great actor and humanitarian, but
also as a terrifc piece of entertainment. Its the one well always remember him
by. (Matt Kiernan)

RZ 4/29
Cheap and ludicrous is the name of the game at Video Hate Squad, where
we present movies that have only ever been released on VHS tape. THE DIVINE
ENFORCER is about a priest who decides hes seen enough and goes full into full
kickboxing vigilante mode. Hes supported in his eforts by his fellow men-of-the-
cloth Jan Michael Vincent and Erik Estrada, who sit around a drab kitchen table
and complain about how bad everything is getting. Fortunately for the movies
entertainment value, the bad guys are played by reliable sleaze-person Don Stroud
and the terrifying Jim Brown, who really gives this movie his all! Action, horror,
with righteous insanity. (Lars)
Afternoon Tea: BECOMING JANE
Dir. Julian Jarrold, 2007, PG-13, 120 min
SL 4/28
Ive always dreamed of living in a Jane Austen novel. The dresses! The fowery
etiquette! The handsome gentlemen in riding breeches! But for Jane Austen, who
actually lived during that time, the reality wasnt so heavenly. In BECOMING JANE,
a flm loosely based on her life, we watch as Jane, played by the always stunning
Anne Hathaway, turns down suitor after suitor, determined to pursue a career as
a writer in spite of societys disapproval. When she meets Thomas Lefroy (Scott
McAvoy), her plans threaten to go awry, as is prone to happen when an extremely
handsome man is involved. With a stellar cast including James Cromwell and the
indomitable Maggie Smith, this flm reveals Jane Austens struggles while, lets be
honest, doing nothing to sway my desire to live in that time period. So join me for
Afternoon Tea, where we can sip on tea (provided by Austins own Zhi Tea), nibble
on British baked goods and escape to a world of romance, gentility and dashing
men in top hats. (Sarah Pitre)
Broadway Brunch: WEST SIDE STORY
Dir. Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise, 1961, NR, 152 min,
35mm
RZ 4/20, 4/21
Whether youre a Jet or a Shark, its always a good idea to start of your Sunday
with mimosas, a tasty meal and a classic musical. Our new Broadway Brunch series
continues with Academy Award-winning WEST SIDE STORY, featuring the luminous
Natalie Wood, the sassy Rita Moreno and the best gang dance sequence in the
history of cinema. Based on the 1957 musical, this movie transplants the tragic
story of Romeo and Juliet to the streets of Manhattan, where Maria and Tony fall in
love despite the ongoing feud between their rival gangs. Its a vibrant, emotionally
dynamic flm, and well be serving up an equally compelling menu. Even if your
mouth is full of tasty brunch business, youll still feel oh so pretty as you sing along
to the spectacular music by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Broadway
Brunch is defnitely one of the reasons we like to be in America, and after the show,
we guarantee youll be singing, And suddenly Ive found, how wonderful a brunch
can beeee! (Sarah Pitre)
Celluloid Handbag: FEMALE TROUBLE
Dir. John Waters, 1974, NC-17, 89 min, 35mm
RZ 4/25
There are VERY few flms in life that carry this plot summary Dawn Davenport
runs away from home, is raped, becomes a single mother, criminal and glamorous
model before her inevitable rendezvous with the electric chair..., but there will
always be a fugged up CELLULOID HANDBAG that will glorify its holy name!! Join

JASON & THE ARGONAUTS
SUPER FRIENDS
Dionysium
SL 4/4
The Dionysium ofers a unique, innovative program of debate, lecture, declamation,
theatrical presentation and music in a salon-like atmosphere on the frst
Wednesday of every month at the Alamo South Lamar. Audiences enjoy oferings
not to be found elsewhere in Austin, including the recitation of famous speeches,
participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity
to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show
will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a flm or live musical
performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fction-writing contest, and plenty of strong
drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against
each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions have
covered everything from Social Security reform to the future threat of genocidal
robots.

Dir. Don Chafey, 1963, 104 min, G, 35mm
SL 4/28
Most fantastic movies use special efects to create illusions of giant creatures and
impossible battles. But very, very few of these flms are courageous enough to
use ACTUAL MAGIC. Well, it just so happens that efects ultra-mega-wizard Ray
Harryhausen put every drop of his patented silver screen sorcery into JASON
AND THE ARGONAUTS, a rampaging, rollicking, rough-and-tumble mythological
adventure that puts every other kid-friendly epic to shame. Young warrior Jason
travels halfway across the world in search of The Golden Fleece, fanked by
Hercules and other courageous masters of adventure. Along the way, theyll engage
in hair-raising battles with wicked harpies, an army of skeletons, the multi-headed
Hydra and a tremendous war giant made entirely of impenetrable metal! Theres
only one JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, and weve got it in glorious, Technicolor
35mm! So if you like fun, excitement and/or monsters, well be saving you a space
in the Hall of Great Heroes this Saturday!

French humanist philosopher, activist, and mystic, Simone Weil (1909 1943) is
sadly little known today, but Julia Hasletts stimulating documentary uncovers a
wealth of material which brings Weil back into a deserved spotlight. Particularly
concerned with the plight of the French working class during the Great Depression,
Weil insisted that philosophers should experience what they wrote about, so she
went to work in a factory before returning to teaching. She fought on the side of
anarchists during the Spanish Civil War and apparently starved herself to death
during World War II in solidarity with the sufering masses.
