A never before published novel from Nobel prize-winning author Patrick White

Tender and wise, this wonderful, never-beforepublished novel speaks directly to the child that resides in each of us, and will bring a whole new raft of readers to the work of Patrick White.
Meredith Curnow, Publisher Vintage/Knopf Random House Australia

The Hanging Garden

Patrick White

A previously unpublished novel from the winner of the 1973 Nobel Prize for Literature.
Set in Sydney nearing the end of World War II, The Hanging Garden is the story of children in various states of guardianship due to the death, injury or inability to cope of their parents and the relationships the children form. As the War draws to an end, like many other cities and countries, Sydney is populated by children and women who have taken on additional roles in the workplace and home, and sometimes other peoples children too. Many, not only those who have been exported to Australia, feel themselves reffos as they are washed up in new households and suburbs. In this environment the bonds formed between children though they generally start with deep suspicion are intense and sustaining. The Hanging Garden is a sly, funny, warm and poignant story, as truthful as every word that Patrick White has ever written.
9781742752655 | $29.95 | Hardback | Knopf Australia | Quality Fiction Also publishing as an ebook.

Patrick White was born in England in 1912. He was taken to Australia (where his father owned a sheep farm) when he was six months old, but educated in England, at Cheltenham College and Kings College, Cambridge. He settled in London, where he wrote several unpublished novels, then served in the RAF during the Second World War. He returned after the war to Australia, where he became the most considerable figure in modern Australian literature before being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. His position as a man of letters was controversial, provoked by his unpredictable public statements and his belief that it is eccentric individuals who offer the only hope of salvation. Technically brilliant, he is one modern novelist to whom the oft-abused epithet visionary can safely be applied. He died in September 1990.

A memoir that encompasses the political, social and cultural evolution of an Aboriginal Australian Woman

Am I black enough for you?

Anita Heiss

The story of an urban-based high achieving Aboriginal woman working to break down stereotypes and build bridges between black and white Australia.
Im Aboriginal. Im just not the Aboriginal person a lot of people want or expect me to be. What does it mean to be Aboriginal? Why is Australia so obsessed with notions of identity? Anita Heiss, successful author and passionate campaigner for Aboriginal literacy, was born a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales, but was raised in the suburbs of Sydney and educated at the local Catholic school. She is Aboriginal however, this does not mean she likes to go barefoot and, please, dont ask her to camp in the desert. After years of stereotyping Aboriginal Australians as either settlement dwellers or rioters in Redfern, the Australian media have discovered a new crime to charge them with: being too fair-skinned to be real Aborigines. Such accusations led to Anitas involvement in one of the most important and sensational Australian legal decisions of the twenty-first century when she joined others in charging a newspaper columnist with breaching the Racial Discrimination Act. He was found guilty, and the repercussions continue. In this deeply personal memoir, told in her distinctive, wry style, Anita Heiss gives a first-hand account of her experiences as a woman with an Aboriginal mother and Austrian father, and explains the development of her activist consciousness. Read her story and ask: what does it take for someone to be black enough for you? 9781742751924 | $34.95 | Trade Paperback | Bantam Australia | Autobiography Also publishing as an ebook.

Anita Heiss is a writer, poet, activist, social commentator and academic. She is the author of Yirra and her deadly dog, Demon, Im not racist, but . . . , My Story: the diary of Mary Talence, Sydney 1937, and a series of chick lit novels including Not Meeting Mr Right and Paris Dreaming. Her work has been shortlisted for the NSW Premiers Literary Awards Young Peoples History Prize and she has won the Deadly award for writing a number of times. She is a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales, but grew up in Matraville, Sydney. Anita describes herself as a concrete Koori with a Westfield dreaming a city chick whose idea of Survivor is a night in a caravan.

Launched in time for Mothers Day 2012, this delightful new book features celebrities in the kitchen with their mums. The book opens with Margaret Fulton, our very first foodie, sharing her mothers recipe for Dundee cake which has now passed on to the third generation of cooks, her daughter Suzanne Gibbs. Dr Chris, from Bondi Vet, and his mother share their love of a barbecue lunch, Chrissie Swan talks about family meals in the 70s, Tetsuya reminisces about his Japanese childhood and its influence on his food, Lisa Wilkinson shares her favourite no-fuss family meal. Everyone has a moment, a recipe and a memory to share. To make this book even more special, on Mothers Day, ACP Books will make a donation from the sales of At my Mothers Knee to Make-A-Wish Australia for children with life-threatening illnesses to symbolise the importance of creating everlasting memories. This book also includes a heartwarming foreword by Robyn Moore, a National Patron for Make-A-Wish Australia.
