Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered)
Management of simple or chronic constipation,
associated with low-fiber diet. Useful in situations in
which straining should be avoided. Used in management
of chronic watery diarrhea. Combines with water in the
intestinal contents to form an emollient gel or viscous
solution that promotes peristalsis and reduces transit
time.
Nursing Implications (what to focus on)
Contraindications/warnings/interactions -
Hypersensitivity, abdominal pain, N/V, Dysphagia.
Common side effects –Bronchospasm, cramps, intestinal
or esophageal obstruction, N/V

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine – May cause
medicines (ask patient specifically) – none with this drug elevated blood glucose levels with prolonged use of
preparations containing sugar.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication – May be used for long-term management.
Avoid straining during BMs.
