Lesson 7: “Comic Presentations”

What’s on for today and why?


Today’s class will be devoted to Pixton presentations. The students were
required to perform a high level thinking comprehension activity and should
be acknowledge for their hard work and success. By sharing their creations
the Pixton activity presents an authentic lesson for the students because the
teacher is not the only one viewing and learning from their creations. The
goal is to gain students’ attention with the familiar medium they understand.
By sharing their creations students will naturally compare and evaluate
others works against their own to see their own level of comprehension. The
sharing of the creations also provides an example of how many different
avenues this project could have taken. The students are exposed to the idea
of multiple perspectives at work. Even if two students happened to have
chosen the same scene from the novel, their creations and insight could
have portrayed an entirely different aesthetic and feeling.

While students are presenting require the viewer students to complete a


peer response sheet. This will assure student viewers are attentive and
respectful and it also helps provides an interesting way for students to give
each other both positive and critical feedback. (This idea was inspired from
WRT 392 instructor: Professor Dunn).

With any remaining time play the audio novel to keep students up to track
with their reading.

What to do:

Give good use to your smartboards. Make sure the program is up and
running and prepared to go before students arrive. When students enter the
room they will choose a piece of paper out of the hat as they walk in with a
number on it. Their number will be their presentation ticket. (Have another
hat with the same numbers on it and pull from it after each student presents
this way its not in numerical order.)
As each student presents complete your own assessment sheet based on
their comic, but more importantly what each box frame represents from the
text. Student viewers will also be required to fill out a peer evaluation sheet.

-Remind students to bring in their two song lyrics for Wednesday. Finish
reading up to p. 166

How did it go?


During the presentations the teacher kept a log of each student’s work-
jotting down both positive and critical feedback. It is essential that before
any critical feedback a student receive a positive comment in reflection of
their work. (Positive reinforcement builds confidence as both a person and
student and in turn will benefit their work for other assignments). To assess
today ask yourself

• Was the fostered peer-to peer interaction and evaluation successful?

• Was the visual learning reinforced through their presentation- did they
associate the power of words and images?
