The Happy Faces
Om Swastiastu... When we went on a trip to see the Komodo Dragons in Komodo Island, we were taken by our guide to visit the fishing village of Kampung Komodo for a short tour and to visit an elementary school on the island. The native children in the village greeted us on the pier and proudly showed us their ability to jump into the sea. It reminded us of the children at Balis harbors, who risk their lives jumping from the big ferry into the dangerous sea for Rp. 10,000. But at Kampung Komodo, none of us gave money to the children, as surprisingly none of the children asked for money. We had such good fun playing with the children, taking a lot of pictures of them and showing them the pictures. The quiet school soon became very lively with shouts, screams, cheers, and laughs from them. There was such a happy feeling, but I then realized that I actually didnt bring anything to make them even happier. Then I asked them, if I come back here again, what would they like me to bring? One of the bigger children answered me with an answer I never thought of before. He said, Bring me some books, Kakak (Sister), Id like to read books but its hard to find them here. Tears dropped from my eyes, because it was books he wanted, not a toy or money. Even when we were about to leave our guide gave them her only pen, and those children were fighting to get that pen. Unfortunately that was the only pen we had. Since then I promised that if I come back there again one day, I will bring them books, pens, notebooks, and print them the pictures I took that day. The message we want to deliver is that we as humans live as part of this world. We dont live alone, and around us there are many people, creatures and even the environment that need to be well taken care of. We will never know anything unless we start to care about what our surroundings actually need, and to stop being selfish and see life from another perspective. Commencing on Earth Day that falls on April 22, we bring Tri Hita Karana as this months theme, to remind us to take care of our surroundings and that humans will not be able to survive in this Earth without getting support from each other, other creatures, and even Mother Earth itself. And hopefully by reading our magazine this month, you will be inspired to start small act for a bigger result. Enjoy reading, and dont forget to bring some inspiring and educational books for the children of Kampung Komodo if you plan to visit them. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om The Team

THREE CONCEPT
Tri Hita Karana: A trinity that cannot be separated one from one another. This three concept is divine wisdom that regards the life of every being on Earth.
believes in Murshid (spiritual mentor), Rasul (the prophet), and Allah (God). In modern times, we now recognize the most popular trinity is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This three concept is also familiar among scientists with the electron, proton and neutron (the Among the Balinese, this three concept is known as Tri Hita Karana. This concept is believed to have been applied since centuries ago. This universal concept ties together the relationship of a person with God (Parahyangan), their Surroundings (Palemahan) and humanity (Pawongan). The term Tri Hita Karana itself appeared in 1966, developed by Balis Hindu Society. Tri means three, Hita means prosperity, and Karana means the causes. In Sanskrit terminology, Tri Hita Karana is the three elements that manifest happiness, or three factors that create physical and spiritual prosperity. It is a universal strategy to preserve the balance, compatibility and the harmony of life on Mother Earth. The Tri Hita Karana concept consists of three major wisdoms: Parhyangan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans with God, Palemahan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans and their natural surroundings, and Pawongan or the wisdom of the harmony of life between humans with each other. It is believed that the harmony among these three aspects

piritualist Anand Krisna found an interesting fact in the use of the number Three; that most religions in this world use the number three as an important factor in their beliefs. Christians symbolize the trinity as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Sufi

can generate a maximum benefit to the spiritual, mental and physical well being of humans.
supported unconditionally by the earth, and the last thing is to remember that if we continually take every single part of nature without giving back, it will be drained and will affect to our life in the future.
PARAHYANGAN
Some people interpret Parahyangan as the way to build a good relationship with God. Others believe that God will be angry if we forget about him. But actually the concept of Parahyangan does not label God like human who can get angry if His creatures do something wrong. But it is beyond that, as the Parahyangan concept tries to create the awareness that each individual in this planet has to believe that they are part of God, and God is inside them, in a hope that people will be able to control their minds and emotions towards their spiritual living on Earth. The Balinese Hindu has a unique way to apply the Parahyangan Wisdom, in that they always have to remember the fact that humans are a part of the Mother Universe. They symbolize each power of God in a certain form known as the Pura (temple). The statues and other creations placed in a pura become as the media to focus on certain wisdoms of the universe. The Balinese believe that there is only one God, but that God has limitless wisdom.
PAWONGAN
The last wisdom is to create a harmonious relationship among human beings, as the essence of humans is as social creatures. As an individual, we will not be able to live a real life without others. The Pawongan Wisdom directs people to start believing that they all are one; if we hurt someone, it means that we are hurting our self. Moreover, Pawongan is reflecting the existence of the appreciation of humanity, mutual value, respect and off course human rights.
PALEMAHAN
The Palemahan wisdom represents a harmonic relationship between the human and the natural sphere. And how should we do that? Humans should follow the wisdom of this Trinity: to having a thought that we are part of Mother Nature, to remember that we live on this planet; that we breath, we get income, able to drive a fancy car and enjoy the luxury seven-star hotels. You can name all the good things we enjoy, which until now have been

hotels in the world to be awarded the EarthCheck Platinum. For the past couple of years, many hotels in Bali have applied the concept of Tri Hita Karana and focused on sustainability in their daily operations. Jim Boyles, the General Manager of Meli Bali, explained in the ASEAN Tourism Conference Manado 2012 that Meli Bali has reduced its energy consumption by 757,146 kWh and achieved over US $63,949 in savings with during a period of less than 1 year. culture of Bali as well as every aspect of the wisdom in relation with the Tri Hita Karana concept. Every year various awards are given for the organizations that achieve the standard of THK implementation. The highest awards are the Emerald and Platinum Awards given to three-time Gold Award winner in consecutive years, while The Gold Award is given as the organizations high achievement. And the lesser awards are Silver and Bronze Awards given to show the rigorous review and evaluation process of the organizations. One of the reputable Tri Hita Karana recognitions is Meli Bali. Honored three times with an Emerald Award, the hotel received its first Emerald in 2004, the second in 2008 and had its most recent honor awarded in 2011. It is also recognized internationally, and was recently named as the first hotel in Asia and one of only five

equipment operational hours (6-10 p.m.), switching off televisions, optimizing equipment by reducing the capacity of the fountain and heat reclaim pump and by combining pumping requirements of chiller water, retrofitting equipment to operate more efficiently by installing a variable speed drive to the cold water and chiller water pump, and reducing operational hours of the laundry by 4 hours if occupancy rates are less than 70%. Meanwhile another hotel known for its commitment in maintaining sustainability is the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, which has been recognized as the pioneer five-star hotel in Bali that started to operate its Starfish Water Purification in November last year. It also has the first large scale Solar Hot Water System with a 144 solar panel Solar Thermal System, owned and operated by PT Contained Energy Bali.
The Starfish drinking water purification system provides a quantum leap over current water treatment and purification processes and technologies. Its processes work together to synergistically break down, remove or kill contaminants from water waste and use the water for daily operations while saving about 40% from their total water consumption, while the Solar Thermal System saves energy costs of approximately US $48,000 per year. The green hotel movement as part of Tri Hita Karana concept can also motivate hotels in Bali to start taking part in implementing the philosophy, especially to reduce power consumption costs. With the upcoming increase in price of fuel, which will be implemented by the Government on April 1, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu hopes that this can be a trigger for all tourism operators to start implementing the Green Hotel concept by doing energy conservation and maintaining water and waste recycling. She also hoped that hotel management will ask the guests to take part by choosing not to change towels or sheets if its not necessary in order to save water and detergent. Another example of the trinity implementation is shown by
The Breezes Bali Resort & Spa. The management shows their strong commitment in taking care of the staff very well. Not only raising wages and using bonus plans as work stimulus, the staff are also given full medical coverage and entertained by staff parties celebrating special events including the hotels anniversary to maintain good relationships between all levels of staff. It is believed that a happy and satisfied staff will deliver the best service to the guests, and they meant to do it from their heart, not just do it as a job. Harmony is not only achieved by being concerned about the environment, but also by creating a harmonious environment among people with the same level. The concept of hospitality in Bali reflects the concept of Tri Hita Karana by creating a balanced relationship between all levels of staff, between superior and staff, employers and customers, the government and the people with the ultimate goal to get win-win relationships, and it happens in the culture of Bali. But as the purpose of life is to get happiness, it can be created by understanding and respecting all aspects in our lives in this Universe, no matter what they are. Text by Gede Bayu Rahanatha/IT

Traditional Healing with Natural Elements
Indulging in beauty treatments have become a normal part of the lifestyle among modern people, especially for those who live in the city. Being in good shape and beautiful makes for a successful life in both career and society. But as life gets busier, sometimes people find it hard to sneak out and have a treatment, so going for a holiday means more time to focus on beauty treatments. Holiday time nowadays is no longer just visiting a destination.
More and more beauty centers and spas in Bali offer extensive treatments for visitors seeking beauty and sanctuary. They not only come to escape, but also to have total relaxation, balancing both the physical and the mental while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. One of the most famous resorts in Bali, which always brings up the authentic traditional philosophy, is the Four Seasons Resorts. These resorts, located in Jimbaran Bay and in the Sayan Village in Ubud, recently introduced a new concept of beauty ritual focusing on balancing the external and internal worlds. Both of the resorts also bring the strong Balinese concept and philosophy implemented in all aspects of the ritual and the spa atmosphere, as well as elements and inspiration from the surrounding area in their organic products made from the finest natural plant and mineral ingredients.
The Four Seasons Resorts Bali at Jimbaran Bay for example, offers an open and outward feeling with treatments focusing on the cleansing power of water, salts and crystals reflecting its beach location. Water brings the uplifting energy of cleansing, restoring and dreaming, and water in motion produces abundant negative ions; while salts and crystals are rich in minerals and ions, which can provide nutrients to the skin as well as to balance energy. Combining these three elements together can create a positive effect on human energy and emotion. Three of its signature treatments are the Cleansing Waters: Marine Algae Treatment, Restoring Waters: Bio-Rhythm Treatment, and Dreaming Waters: Mimpi Manis Treatment. The Marine Algae Treatment is best for hydrating the skin and detoxification as well as to provide nutrients to the skin with the minerals

What would be your answer to this question? What is the most important thing in life? Each person would have varying answers according to each life purpose. But there is one definite answer, and that is, life itself. In order to maintain a good life, we must be physically and spiritually well.
Recently these traditions have seen a revival in popularity. Como Shambhala Estate, a resort in Ubud, has detoxification treatments featuring raw food. After a few trials and errors, they began introducing their new menu items. Raw food is about trust. That is why we choose our own ingredients and process it ourselves to ensure that all is safe, said Yulia Sukanta, General Manager of 3V. Thats why they take full control over their whole selection and preparation processes from start to finish. For example, the dry cacao they source from farmers in Karangasem, East Bali. They select the seeds to roast and process them into cocoa powder. It is this powder that is then used to create their chocolate pudding, served with mint leaves and coconut shreds. The dark chocolate pudding is rather full-bodied, sweet, and with a unique taste as there is no milk involved. Milk is absent to make way for vegan customers. As a substitute, nuts are added to provide the milky taste. Besides fruits and vegetables, nuts are an important ingredient in processing raw food. Nuts are rich in protein and healthy fats. Varieties of nuts can be used to process various menu items, including tartlets or nut dough. Processing is simple. Nuts are immersed overnight to make them tender, then are blended and formed according to purpose. The toppings can be fruit purees and garnished with fruit coulis or fruit slices. This results in a raw strawberry tart. The fruits used are nearly always local fruits. The local fruits and vegetables are often fresher than imported ones. A favorite choice of fruit soup at 3V is the chilled cucumber and mint soup. Processed from zucchini, this soup is suitable for Balis sultry climate. The Balinese themselves believe that cucumbers and zucchinis can cool down the belly and can help reduce high blood pressure. Cucumbers can also be used as a main course. In Indonesia they are usually just peeled. But they can also be formed into various appetizing shapes. The chef at 3V slices them as noodle strands. Along with coconut meat shredded in a similar way, both of these main ingredients are arranged on a plate with other vegetable variations, and then a Thai sauce is added. The result is Pad Thai ala 3V. Raw food doesnt taste as bland as most people think. This food perhaps wont taste as crispy as fries, as tender as cooked meat, or taste as scrumptious as stock or other cooked foods. Yet these raw foods still have a unique, fresh and healthy appeal. It is no wonder that this has become a trend that moves slowly but surely. More and more are presenting it as an alternative for healthy living. The government has made several attempts to migrate these people to other islands, but it has failed because the people are Hindus who dont want to be migrated to Muslim dominated islands. They are enormously bound to their ground, as they believe that the souls of their ancestors are coming back yearly to visit their villages. Although the local government periodically do beggar sweeping in many tourism areas, and some local authorities have claimed that certain tourist areas are beggarfree by putting banners on every corner of the area, it hasnt been effective yet because the handling afterwards isnt giving a deterrent effect. Theyre still seen and there isnt any punishment as they are just sent home. There should be counseling for them, and the local government says they are working on it. There are a lot of things that have been tried in the past few years. NGOs, foundations, organizations and even individuals have tried to help. Many things are in progress now. Public elementary schools are already free of charge, but some children refuse to go to school due to the far distance and rugged paths. Some parents choose to bring their children begging instead of sending them to school. Bringing their children gives them more money, as people will pity them. Some of non-profit foundations keep raising awareness about the importance of education to the people of Muntigunung, and they have built some pre-schools for early childhood education. Education is an important factor to break the chain of poverty, as they expect to improve their living standards and not beg anymore. Another task is to secure and maintain a clean water supply, which will make them able to have clean water nearby so they dont have to spend hours to collect water from the coast like they did before. They can also irrigate their land, which later will lead to farming. Muntigunungs dry soil turns out to be perfect for planting cashew nuts, Rosella-hibiscus, palm sugar and Jathropa.

The women are also empowered to produce hats and baskets from lontar palm leaves. These products are sold individually and get distribution help from various organizations. Some hotels also participate by buying these products from the Muntigunung farmers instead of buying them somewhere else from a big factory or importer. Such as the rosella-hibiscus can be made into tea or jam that is served at the hotel. By being able to independently earn money, the Muntigunung people can have a better life and have the confidence to make a brighter future and break the dependency of help and compassion from other parties.

resort that is surrounded by a golf course. The Nirwana Bali Golf Club, as part of Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort, features an 18-hole course beautifully designed by golf legend Greg Norman. The construction was completed in 1997 with challenging holes for the pro-golfer but still enjoyable for the beginner. Where else in the world can you combine climbing up and down the valleys, crossed the creeks, traversing across the rice fields, with playing golf? These, along with the stunning scenery, are the reasons why the Nirwana Bali Gold Club won an
world. Nestled on top of a sheer cliff with breathtaking views of Balis most iconic view, the Tanah Lot Temple with the backdrop of the Indian Ocean, this lush 103-hectare has a unique concept, a
award from WTA 2011 as Indonesias Leading Golf Resort, and is also listed in the top 100 Golf Courses in the World in Golf Digest Magazine. Golf is mostly known as a prestigious sport. Its expensive and exclusive, especially here in Indonesia. Thats no wonder. Golf is arguably the only sport that requires a vast field on which to play, and with the land prices always increasing, building a golf course cant be cheap, especially with all of the grass maintenance, golf carts, and other equipment. But the price paid is worth the unique experience you can get from this place. The name Nirwana itself means paradise, and it truly makes you feel like you are playing golf in paradise. The rates for a round of golf varies depending on several options, but mostly its around Rp. 1,000,000. If the players want unlimited access to use the course, they have to pay an annual membership fee for Rp. 6 million. The perk of living on a tropical island is that you can play

This approach is friendly to the environment. During your game, some beautiful Balinese caddies will accompany your and ensure you to have a wonderful and memorable experience. The caddies are there to improve the quality of your golf experience, speed up play, provide encouragement, and share in the excitement of a great shot or stroke of good fortune. Each of the caddies is put through a 3month training program before heading out on the course. This outstanding caddie program covers all aspects of the game in great detail. The new caddies will be paired with the experience caddies who will also monitor their progress closely. any time of the year since theres no winter season, although sometimes the weather can be very unpredictable. For beginners, they offer lessons and on-course instruction that includes green fee, caddy, and card. Each of the courses 18 holes presents a different challenge for the player. Holes 7, 13 and 14 are located on the cliff-top beside the Indian Ocean. These are extremely dramatic holes that require a combination of skill and concentration to play well. Hole 7 is their signature. With the view of the Indian Ocean and the Tanah Lot temple, the combination of natural beauty and the exoticism of Bali is very exquisite. Its also challenging, as you have to hit the ball across the cliff, from the cliff side tee across a piece of the ocean to a scenic and well-guarded green. There are not many places in the world where such dramatic cliff-tip land is allocated for golfholes. Hole 13 will require all a golfers skill and concentration as it plays along the Indian Ocean cliff top. Hole 14 is a dramatic par 3, with the ocean thundering below. Greg Normans design style is very different from many of the other modern golf course designers. He places a great deal of emphasis on making the appearance of the course as dramatic and beautiful as possible. He tries to create the maximum contrast of colour and texture between the highly groomed tees, greens and fairways, and the more informal areas of short rough and outer rough. He also believes in using ornamental or native grasses in the outer rough, as these will require little or no irrigation and maintenance. At the Nirwana Bali Golf Club, much of this outer

the land of dragons
We just landed in Labuan Bajo about an hour ago. Tired but excited, our jaunt is about to start. This time our destination is to see the last Jurassic traces on Earth, exploring the land of the dragon on Komodo Island.
56
it wasnt raining the thick grey clouds still hung in the sky. Labuan Bajo was once a small fishing village, but now its turned into a gateway for tourists who want see a Komodo Dragon, the biggest species of reptile that lives in the nearby islands. This small town is now getting busier, especially after Komodo Island had been selected as one of the New7Wonders, the worlds most controversial tourism campaign. With its new fame, more and more tourists are coming to this town. It was famous before as a backpackers haven, but it now seems ready to welcome more upscale tourists with its new star hotels built within the area offering more convenient places to stay and attractive packages. Our trip to Komodo Island was to start early in the morning at 7 a.m. We would be taken by a speedboat on a 1-hour trip to
he weather in Labuan Bajo this time of year was not very friendly. Our flight from Bali was delayed for two hours because the arriving plane couldnt land due to the thick clouds. Fortunately we had smooth landing at the Komodo Labuan Bajo Airport, and although
the island, then spend a half day there cruising around the island before going to the Pink Beach, then heading back to Labuan Bajo again. With a fishing boat, the trip could take 4 hours to go from Komodo Island to Labuan Bajo, so most of the tourists usually prefer to stay overnight on a boat and hop around the small isles. The surrounding area is one of the richest fish fauna and biodiversity in marine life in the world and very famous for its scuba diving points. Fortunately the weather was kind to us the next morning. After finishing our breakfast our guide took us to the harbor and we got into the speedboat. We joined with another group and headed directly to Komodo Island. The sea condition was good and the sky was full of thin clouds moving slowly, refracting the morning sunshine, and making the sky silvery and glowing. We passed some small islands that have fishermens villages such as Mesa Island, also the famous Kanawa Island that offers an unforgettable island escape bungalow, and soon appeared the famous Batu Tiga, the small three rock islands that indicate you are getting closer to Komodo Island. The Komodo Dragons live in areas such as Komodo, Rinca,
57
Flores, Gili Motang and Gili Dasami. It was first discovered by the scientific world in 1911 by J.K.H. Van Steyn, a Dutch colonial administrator, after he heard about a land crocodile, and the expedition to gather more information about Komodo Dragons was first started in 1926. The Government established Komodo National Park in 1980 to conserve the unique Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis) and protect its entire biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial. The site was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986, located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. The park includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totalling 603 square kilometers of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 square kilometers.
We continued on towards Komodo Island and passed the famous Pink Beach. Before we reached the island, our guide explained that we were on a tight schedule and couldnt be going back too late because the sea would be too dangerous to pass. We then gathered our bags and got ready for a little adventure. The boat engine was shut off and soon the sound of the insects as well as the sounds of the Komodo Dragons could be heard breaking the silence of this island. Just as we walked down the pier, a Komodo Dragon passed by in front of the welcoming gate of Komodo Island. It wasnt that big but it drew our attention, and soon the group was busy taking pictures. A Jagawana or ranger as the guide is called, came along to keep us safe and escorted us to the reception office. Its
58 BALI&BEYOND APRIL 2012
visitors have to be really careful during the trek. Keep silent; dont go anywhere out of the path or away from the ranger. If you have to run because they chase you, run zigzag because the Komodo can only move forward straight. Another thing that you must be aware of is that if youre in your menstruation period you must tell the ranger before you go trekking. The Komodo is very sensitive to blood; they can smell it from far away and track where it comes from. They also are able to detect carrion from 49.5 kilometres (2.55.9 miles) away. There are four types of trails available for trekking, a Short Trek, Medium Trek, Long Trek and the Adventure Trek. The Short Trek is the easiest trail without much climbing and walking on steep slopes. It only takes one hour and it ends at Fregata Hill, where you can see a beautiful view of the Komodo Islands bay from the hill. You will also be taken to the restaurant and the market where you really unusual that a Komodo actually greets people, because this animal is rarely seen and mostly keeps to themselves hidden in the jungle. But we were pretty lucky since we saw another smaller one walking by again on our way to the reception office. The older Komodo Dragons are smaller in size. The ranger said that is because they have to fight more to get the food and the older they are the less food they get, as they have to fight against the young Komodos. They reach their biggest size at age 35, can weigh up to 100 kg, and can live until 50-60 years of age. The Komodos saliva contains virulent bacteria, but the animal itself is unaffected by it. The saliva is very dangerous for other living creatures, including humans, and it can be very poisonous if it gets into a wound or the Komodo bites you. Thats why all can buy some of the islands typical souvenirs: Komodo Dragon statues, T-shirts and some traditional masks. The Medium Trek will take you on a 3 km trail for 1.5 hours to the Water Hole, the water source for the Komodo, and it ends at Sulphurea Hill. The Long Trek is 4.5 kms and takes 2.5 hours, and is just an extension of the Medium Trek where visitors will be taken to the area where the Komodo Dragons were once routinely fed (at Banu Nggulung). For all well prepared visitors who want more challenges, they can choose the Adventure Trails that will take you further more. We took a combination of the Short Trek and Medium Trek. The ranger took us to the Water Hole and to the Fregata Hills. During the trip we see many Komodo and some other animals including a group of Timor deer taking a rest at the recreation

point. We also saw some rare Green Emperor Pigeons and some flying lizards. At the moment there are about 1,200 Komodo Dragons that live on Komodo Island, sharing the area with other inhabitants including Asian mammals (deer, pigs, macaques, civets), Australian origin reptiles and birds, twelve terrestrial snakes including the poisonous cobra (Naja naja sputatrix), Russels pit viper (Vipera russeli), and green tree vipers (Trimeresurus Albolabris). We passed the recreation area where they have an official souvenir shop, restaurant and accommodation. The buildings are in poor condition but fortunately there are more new buildings about ready to operate. Its a shame that the Government seems like they are just busy promoting without really caring about the facility for tourists of this famous tourism icon of Indonesia. The Short Trek took us to the end and we headed back to the Reception Office. Our boats engine had been turned on and its time for us to leave this island. But our journey hadnt ended yet, we had more destinations to reach and I am sure that, sooner or later, I will get back here again. But I hope next time the weather will be better. surrounding the parks as well as concerns over security issues. But in some places, things are getting better. The governments commitment to gradually increase the percentage of green space in Jakarta serves as a good omen for its people who want to spend more time outside. The idea to go to the park has been well introduced, and theres this group of ladies dedicating their time to test several parks in Jakarta, Lazy Sunday Picnic & Artsy. Initiated by Dita Anggraeni and her friends Niken Anggrahini and Triasterina Lastanti,
or years, going to city parks have become the last thing J-towns citizen would do, due to the inconvenient environment
this Lazy Sunday Picnic & Artsy had gone to Taman Suropati, Taman Menteng, Taman Monas and even parks in Bandung. The group started picnicking when Dita returned to Jakarta after finishing her studies in Holland, where she loved to go on picnics and spend her free time with her friends. Finding green spaces was not difficult in Holland, but the same cannot be said about Jakarta where most of the people choose to go to malls instead of parks and the malls far outnumber city parks. This trio despised this fact because in their minds, parks should be a much more interesting meeting point. But funny enough, our first picnic in March of 2011 was convened at a convenient store because of heavy rain, Tanti recalled. It was supposed to be

Located in the same venue, Agustinus Esthisugeng Dwiharso, usually known as Ages, and wife Yasminka Subekti established a non-formal music school for people of all ages named Taman Suropati Chamber. The ball started to roll after Guitar Class by Kelas Gitar Gratis Ages, the violist for Keroncong Toegoe, was participating in a keroncong workshop in The Hague, Holland in 2006. At that time I was impressed to our pilot project so we held it anyway, anywhere. Besides recreation, Dita and Niken also exercise and do some crafting as well as host some activities they did several years earlier. When in Bandung, Dita learned the Japanese art of paper-folding called Origami, while Niken learned to knit. Through this activity, they share their skills and learn new skills with the other participants. Its fun to meet new people and learn new things, says Tanti. Their activity attract other friends that come and bring their family, crafting tools, guitars, and of course food. Dita, Niken and Tanti were not always that erudite though. Sometimes they just sit down and gossip or lie down on their picnic mat with books covering their faces. From their park hunting experience, Tanti said that Taman Suropati is currently the best because its clean, safe and has sufficient lighting. That is important because every so often their picnic time stretches until night. Lying in the upscale Menteng residential area, this neat and lovely park is shaded by a number of giant trees. It inherited its name from Suropati, a Balinese slave who rebelled and escaped from his Dutch master in 1684. A series of statues representing each of the six original members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) sits against the backdrop of greenery. These statues symbolize friendship, peace, harmony and fraternity. Street artists sell their work along the sides of the park. see appreciation among Europeans for Indonesian traditional folk music, Ages said. I also happened to observe a brass section band playing in the park at the Tong Tong Fair. Returning to Indonesia, Ages felt a huge concern over the mushrooming of malls and it annoyed him. He felt that those malls could not give much benefit and therefore he wanted to provide more educative recreation. He chose music, Indonesian folk music in particular, because it has been his passion since he was very young. This Van Lith School for Teachers graduate started with small group of friends practicing violin and cello in 2006 and officially established the Taman Suropati Chamber in May 2007, with around 25 to 30 people participating each week. Now

the Taman Suropati Chamber has 200 members and about 80 people come to practice every week with 11 instructors in violin, alto violin, cello, guitar and flute. In his classes Ages teaches students to practice as a group, not one-on-one like in regular music school. With his team, this 42 year-old arranged a practical syllabus based on a classical music teaching curriculum so students could accomplish it more easily. Picking outdoor space as a venue also helps students to master the right technique to produce the right sounds, Ages explained. Currently Ages is in the process of registering his school as a non-formal education institute with the Ministry of National Education and Culture so he could issue certificates to his students. It shouldnt be difficult considering the Taman Suropati Chambers reputation, which has reached the Presidents ears. This group has appeared twice before at the Presidential Palace and has held concerts at the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (literally Jakarta

We just want to introduce basic guitar skills and if the student wants to be more serious, she/he could apply to music school, said Iga. HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
