SACRAMENTO The California 2012 Delegation Committee today announced that the Honorable George L. Argyros is joining former Governor Pete Wilson, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Congressman Darrell Issa and former Secretary of State Bill Jones as an Honorary Co-Chairman of the Delegation. Ambassador Argyros is one of the Golden States most respected and accomplished political leaders. He was appointed by former President George W. Bush and served as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain and Principality of Andorra from November 2001 to November 2004. Ambassador Argyros is recognized worldwide for the way in which he has represented America, the Republican Party and the values that make both great, Delegation Honorary Chairman Governor Pete Wilson said. In California, George has been an tremendous influence, supporting numerous GOP candidates and causes. His leadership demonstrates Californias prominence and will be a great asset to our Republican Presidential nominee in Tampa Bay and through to Election Day. Ambassador Argyros is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arnel & Affiliates, a prominent West Coast diversified investment company, headquartered in Costa Mesa. He is also a General Partner in Westar Capital. From 1981-1987, Ambassador Argyros was co-owner of AirCal, which was sold to American Airlines in 1987 and from 1981-1989, he owned the Seattle Mariners Baseball Club. From 1976 to 2001, Ambassador Argyros set a record as the longest serving Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chapman University, one of the Wests finest private universities. He currently remains on the Chapman Board while also serving as a Life Trustee for the California Institute of Technology. Ambassador Argyros was a 1993 recipient of the Horatio Alger Award of Distinguished Americans, perhaps the single most coveted award given in America to non-military, non-show business individuals. In June 2005, through the Horatio Alger Association, and with his wife Julia, Ambassador Argyros initiated the first national college scholarship program exclusively for veterans who have served honorably in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. As of January 2009, 2,349 scholarships had been awarded to these veterans. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Pasadena, California, Ambassador Argyros graduated from Chapman University in 1959 with a degree in business and economics.
