The administration and students of Marlton elementary and middle school helped sell and buy hundreds of pairs of neon laces to raise
money for Colin Hough a graduate of the two schools who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The laces are part of the Go4TheGoal
foundation. Hough, 14, is now a freshman at Haddonfield Memorial High School.

The township received a
sizeable grant from the state
last week for some much-need-
ed roadway repairs. Gov.
Christies administration an-
nounced more than $4.9 mil-
lion in local aid funding to var-
ious towns throughout the
state.
Evesham Township official-
ly received $200,000 in aid for
roadway improvements to
Tomlinson Mill Road.
Interim Township Manager
Bill Cromie said the grant will
be used to resurface Tomlin-
son Mill Road. The town has
been filling potholes in that for
several years now, he said, and
it could use a resurfacing. The
township did apply for the
grant but didnt know the dol-
lar amount it would receive if
accepted, he said.
The total estimate for the
1.25-mile project is about
$345,000, he said.
According to the state, com-
petition is always heavy for

eon shoelaces are appearing
everywhere in Haddonfield and
now in Evesham Township in
support of a local family and
their son,
Colin Hough, 14, was recently diag-
nosed with a rare form of cancer that at-
tacks his soft tissue. The faculty mem-
bers of Marlton Elementary School and
Marlton Middle School have banded to-
gether and are selling neon Go4TheGoal
shoelaces to raise money for the family.
Hough, who attended Marlton Elemen-
tary School, is now a freshman at Had-
donfield Memorial High School.
Laura Nicholls and I, who are both
teachers at Marlton Elementary School,
decided to bring this fundraiser into our
school when we found out that Colin
Hough, a former MES student, was diag-
nosed with cancer. Colin is only 14 years
old, MES teacher Cari Funk said. This
fundraiser was a huge success and we
were able to raise over $1,500. On Tuesday
April 20, which is the first day of spring,
our student body and staff members will
join together and wear our laces to show
our support.
Since that statement was made, the
group has raised more than $2,000 for the
Hough family.
A third of the sales go toward paying
for the laces, a third goes to Go4TheGoal
and the remaining third goes to the
Hough family.
These days, its hard to walk a step or
go into a classroom at the elementary and
middle school without seeing a student
sporting the neon shoelaces.
We just got such huge interest in this
and raised so much money through these
laces, we really wanted the family to see
this somehow, Funk said.
The two teachers began selling the
laces to teachers at the two schools first,
before offering them to students.
So far, the teachers have sold hundreds
of pairs of laces and opened up sales to

On Wednesday, March 28, the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict Board of Education adopted
a $147 million budget for the 2012-
2013 school year.
The total tax levy of $107 mil-
lion is an increase of less than 1
percent ($954,306), well below the
state mandated 2 percent annual
tax levy cap.
Regional school taxes will de-
crease in four of the LRHSDs
eight sending districts: Shamong,
Southampton, Tabernacle and
Woodland. Taxes will increase in
Evesham, Medford, Medford
Lakes and Mount Laurel.
In Evesham Township, residents
can expect a tax levy decrease of
1.22 cents, resulting in a increase in
regional school taxes of $33.04 on a
home assessed at the township av-
erage of $271,800, according to the
school districts website.
State aid totaling $28.478 mil-
lion will be combined with $1.295
million in additional state aid the
Lenape Regional District received
in July 2011 and held for tax relief
in 2012-2013.
This year's state aid is $1.37
million more than 2011-2012, but
still $2.5 million less than state
aid received for the 2008-2009
school year, which was the largest
increase in recent budget history.
The 2012-2013 budget enables
the district to maintain current
programs and activities that help
make it one of the highest achiev-
ing districts in the state with a
98.5 percent graduation rate
among its four high schools.
The budget also provides for
six new special education staff,
mandated by federal and state ed-
ucation laws.
Since the 2007-2008 school year,
the district has also received addi-
tional funding totaling nearly $1.9
million from individuals and
community organizations to help
support athletic and academic
programs.
Budget information, including
tax impacts for each sending dis-
trict, is posted on the Lenape Re-
gional High School District web-
site, www.lrhsd.org. For more in-
formation, contact Business Ad-
ministrator James Hager at (609)

April is a big month for the
Evesham Twinning Association,
as the locally based international
friendship organization holds a
pair of major events.
On Monday, April 9, the group
will hold its first-ever open forum
at the Gibson House on Main
Street in Marlton.
The meeting will start at 7 p.m.
and there is no charge to attend.
Then, on Friday, April 20, the
ETA will stage its annual spring
fundraiser at Marcos restaurant
at the Indian Spring Country
Club.
The doors open at 6:30 p.m. to
give attendees a chance to view
various silent and bid auction
items.
Dinner will be served and the
cost is $36 per person.
While different in purpose,
both events share the common
goal of raising awareness of the
association and of the twinning
concept, said ETA President
Lynne Royek. Our open forum
and fundraiser will give newcom-
ers a real feel of what twinning is
all about.
Twinning originated in Europe
following World War II as a means
to bring people from different
countries together.
The idea was that individual
friendships would develop and
lead to greater understanding
and tolerance of one another's
cultures, and, on a grassroots
level, help prevent another con-
flict the magnitude of World War
II.
Twinning is rare in the United
States, but is quite common in
Europe.
The Evesham Twinning Asso-
ciation was created in 1989 after
an Evesham, municipal tax bill
mysteriously ended up in Eve-
sham, England.
The ETA oversees the formal
twin town relationship with
British namesake, and also main-
tains a friendship link with the
town of Dreux, France.
Twinning members from all
three towns visit and live with
each other about every three
years. The ETA also awards an
annual college scholarship to a
local matriculating high school
student.
One of the main topics of dis-
cussion at the April 9 forum will
be this years ETA trip to Eve-
sham, England.
For two weeks, local members
will live with host families in Eve-
sham, about 85 miles northwest of
London, and will take a four-day
side trip via the English Chan-
nel Tunnel to several cities in
Belgium.
While most ETA monthly meet-
ings are held in members homes,
the April session is being held at
a larger, more accessible location
to encourage prospective new
members to attend and learn
about the organization and its
work.
Membership in the ETA is
open to residents of any munici-
pality.
The fundraiser on April 20 will
feature a number of auction
items of different values on
which attendees can bid. In the
past, available items have includ-
ed gift baskets, restaurant and
store gift certificates, free nights
at Orlando resort hotels, a tour of
NFL Films headquarters in
Mount Laurel, tickets to local pro-
fessional sporting events and the-
aters, golf outings and more.
For more information about
the open forum or the spring
fundraiser, please contact Steve
Royek at (856) 906-4755 or at

in our opinion
T
he governor was in Atlantic
City last week celebrating the
nearly completed Revel a
huge casino hotel set to stage a grand
opening in late May.
During his visit, Gov. Christie tout-
ed the 5,000 new permanent jobs the
Revel will create; the $153 million in
payroll it will provide; and the $155
million in state and local taxes it will
generate each year.
And that, of course, is good news for
the beleaguered city and the state as a
whole.
But theres so much more work for
Atlantic City. Primarily: Will it be-
come a destination point for not only
gamblers, but others as well? If it does
not, this big bet will turn out to be a
loser.
Recent reports out of Las Vegas in-
dicate that visitors there are spending
more money on dining, entertain-
ment, food, etc., than on gambling.
That shouldnt surprise anyone. There
are far more gambling outlets avail-
able to people these days than in years
past.
Atlantic City faces a nearly impossi-
ble task of becoming simply a gam-
bling hub. Casinos in surrounding
states are eating up gambling dollars
that historically have gone to AC. Peo-
ple who just want to play a slot ma-
chine or blackjack can find places
much closer to home to do so.
Atlantic Citys challenge is to create
something other than a string of casi-
no hotels. It has to create an experi-
ence. It has to attract people who will
stay in the city for more than a day to
gamble. Relying on busloads of people
from out of state who cash their slot
voucher and then play for a few hours
before re-boarding the bus to go home
just isnt a long-term plan for success.
Atlantic City can reinvent itself.
After all, Time Square reinvented it-
self. The Revel could be a key step in
that renovation, so long as other key
elements safety, shopping, cleanli-
ness, entertainment, etc. follow close
behind.
A bet on Atlantic City
A new casino hotel is great news, but far from a permanent solution
A step toward revitalization?
The Revel will bring jobs and tax dol-
lars. But it isnt enough, by itself, to
stop Atlantic Citys decline. Boosting
non-gambling attractions shopping,
entertainment, dining, etc. is critical
to the citys long-term success.

investigations.
In 2011, he was assigned to the investiga-
tive bureau.
During that time, he investigated count-
less narcotic cases that lead to the arrest of
48 adults who were actively distributing
drugs in Evesham Township.
In just 2011, his investigations lead to the
law-enforcement seizure of 24 motor vehi-
cles used in the distribution of drugs with-
in our community.
Scutt has performed beyond what is nor-
mally considered regular investigator du-
ties.
The countless hours he spends investi-
gating narcotic cases helps not only his
own investigations, but also those of the of-
ficers surrounding him.
His work ethic is unparalleled, and the
Evesham Police Department is fortunate
to have him working within its ranks.
Special to The Sun
Detective Carl Scutt receives his 2011
Knights of Columbus Officer of the Year
Award.

The Christie administration
strongly supports funding for
Local Aid because it understands
how important it is for govern-
ment at all levels to provide safe
streets and roads for motorists
and pedestrians alike, NJDOT
Commissioner James Simpson
said. These grants advance local
projects without placing a burden
on local property taxpayers.
Including the municipal aid
grant awards that were an-
nounced, the Christie administra-
tion will also award approximate-
ly $193.5 million in state-funded
grants this year under several dif-
ferent local aid grant categories.
An additional $101.2 million in
federally funded grants will bring
the total value of the local aid
grant program to $294.7 million.
At several recent township
meetings, Mayor Randy Brown
has lamented the state of several
Marlton roads and the state of
disrepair that has befallen them.
For several years prior to his stint
on the township council, Brown
said leaders of the community
neglected to budget money for
many aspects of the townships
infrastructure.
Its important moving forward,
he said, to invest in the infra-
structure and to repair the road-
ways of several neighborhoods.
While some of the roads in dis-
repair throughout the communi-
ty could be micro surfaced
which is a less expensive option
that consists of treating road sur-
faces with a mixture of dense-
graded aggregate, asphalt emul-
sion, water and mineral fillers
many will still need the full-
blown road resurfacing to com-
pletely repair them, Brown said.
Brush Hollow and Cambridge
Park were easily the two commu-
nities in the biggest need for road
repairs, Brown said, with Wood-
stream coming in a close third to
the two winners.
Currently, the township is com-
pleting work on both Braddock
Mill Road and Charter Oak Lane.
Township council members re-
cently approved a resolution to
award a contract for the resurfac-
ing of Lincoln Drive (phase II) to
Arawak Paving Co. for an amount
not to exceed $323,800.

Last month, a man entered a
business in neighboring Cherry
Hill and posed as a fire inspector.
Officials describe him as a white
man, between 58 and 5'9, heavy-
set with brown hair.
The man said he was there to
inspect the buildings fire extin-
guishers and then demanded
cash in exchange for the inspec-
tion.
He is known by authorities to
have pulled similar scams in
other areas of New Jersey, Penn-
sylvania, Ohio and Michigan.
Anyone recognizing this man
should immediately contact local
police.
Additionally, it should be noted
the only persons authorized in
Evesham Township to perform
fire inspections are firefighters
and inspectors with Evesham
Fire-Rescue.
These individuals will arrive at
your business or home in uni-
form, with identification, and in a
marked department vehicle.
Also, EFD does not charge for
annual fire inspections and will
never request payment for any
fees while at your home or busi-
ness.
Immediately report any suspi-
cious activity to the Evesham Po-
lice Department by dialing 9-1-1.
Evesham recreation is offer-
ing its giant, one-day, neighbor-
hood flea market on Saturday,

crafters and venders. All vendor
space is sold out, so come early
for the best bargains.
