Shell Advance Chain has been developed with a concern for the environment. It contains no chlorinated solvents, and will not fling off, unless applied in excessive quantities. Shell Advance Chain should be applied by running a thin bead of oil along the inside of the chain whilst the chain is moving slowly with the motorcycle out of gear and the rear wheel up. Let the oil distribute well over the surface of the chain and sprockets by letting the wheel turn for a minute or two before riding the motorcycle.
Shell Advance Chain will cling to the chain and sprocket. The high staying power will ensure good lubrication and help extend the life of the chain as well as eliminate fling off. Helps to protect against wear and corrosion. Excellent penetration and adhesion. Extreme film strength to minimise friction. Withstands high pressure and temperatures. Does not attack O rings. Applications
Heavy-duty hydraulic systems for construction and earth moving equipment Machine tool hydraulic systems Hydrostatic drive gears General industrial control equipment and hydraulic systems Moderately rated gearboxes where an anti-wear hydraulic oil is specified
Shell Naturelle HF-E 46 and 68 are environmentally acceptable hydraulic fluids based on synthetic esters and can be used where ISO 15380 or VDMA 24568 HEES fluids are specified. Shell Naturelle HF-E 46 meets the environmental requirements of Swedish Standard SS 15 54 34 and are SP-Listed. Shell Naturelle HF-E 46 and 68 are on the Positivliste and qualify for funding under the German Marketing Introduction Programme for biolubricants. Shell Naturelle HF-E has Eaton Vickers M-2950 S and I-286 S approval. The improved anti-wear properties, and naturally high viscosity index (VI) of Naturelle Fluids HF-E, means that they can often be used where ISO 11158 (HM/HV) and DIN 51524 Part 2 or Part 3 (HLP/HVLP) mineral oil hydraulic fluids are specified. However, bulk fluid operating temperatures should not be allowed to exceed 90C and optimum fluid life will be realised if operating temperatures are maintained at approximately 55C.
I.7
Industry
continued
Shell Naturelle HF-E is miscible with conventional mineral oil based hydraulic oils in all proportions. However, in order to ensure that the environmental properties and performance are maintained, the system should be drained and flushed prior to change over to Shell Naturelle HF-E. Owing to the surface wetting properties of Shell Naturelle HF-E, if systems were previously operated using a mineral oil hydraulic fluid, deposits formed in the system during operation may be loosened and deposited in system filters. The filters should therefore be checked at regular intervals after fluid changeover.
Shell Naturelle HF-E is compatible with all seal materials and paints normally specified for use with petroleum mineral oils. Certain plastics and industrial adhesives may be adversely affected and advice should be sought from the respective manufacturers.
Industry

Additional Information
Control of water content Water content should be controlled within 35% to 45% by weight. Condensate or de-ionized water should be used for any additions, which should be made slowly whilst the fluid is circulating. Conversion from other typ of fluids Specific attention should be given in case of converting to Shell Irus Fluid C systems that were previously using lubricants of different types than ISO HFC (e.g. mineral oils or ISO HFDU type of products). In such a case it is suggested you seek advice from your Shell Representative about the change over procedure you should follow.
Shell Irus Fluid C is particularly suitable for demanding hydraulic applications where there is a high fire risk, such as those found in the Mining and Metal Processing industries. In order to reduce the water evaporation Shell Irus Fluid C, as for all the ISO HFC type of fluids, should be used below 55C with a suggested maximum temperature of 45C.

Shell Omala Oil JM offers the following performance features; Excellent EP/AW properties which provides long gear life even in wet environments. Protection against rust and corrosion. Resistance to foaming. Long service life. Helps maintain clean gears and gearboxes.
In some applications, gear oils are exposed to high levels of water contamination and it is not possible to dry the oil while it is in service. The presence of free water can lead to rapid gear wear due to lack of lubrication; it can also promote rust formation. Shell Omala Oil JM helps reduce the adverse effects of water by forming a stable emulsion with the free water and providing a continuous oil film on the heavily loaded parts. It is recommended for use in the following applications: Any gear oil application where an ISO 460 viscosity grade is appropriate. Any gearset that is operating under heavy shock load conditions and especially one where high levels of water contamination are present and cant be controlled or removed from the gearboxes in any other way. Especially useful in the cutter head gears and crawler drives of continuous mining machines. Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) contains polar materials which are both oil soluble and also volatile. Thus, as Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) is in circulation, the vapour spaces in a system are continuously kept filled with the VSI vapour which is formed by these inhibitors and this vapour continuously blankets metal surfaces to protect them from corrosion. Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) should be added to the lubricant contained in the sump or in the oil tank a few hours before the equipment is stopped. For new pieces of equipment which will be stored after trial, the lubricant/Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) mixture could be totally or partially drained out after the trial run provided however that a small quantity of mixture is kept in the sump. If the oil temperature remains lower than 25C, the distance between the upper internal surfaces to be protected and the oil level in the machine must be less than two metres. The anti-corrosion performance of the lubricant/Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) mixture and the durability of the protection provided are dependent on the degree of ventilation of the system and the oil temperature. The performance can be improved by raising the oil temperature before stopping the equipment and by sealing the vents of the machine concerned. The internal protection of large oil tanks will be improved by brushing or spraying the surfaces to be protected with the lubricant/ Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) mixture. Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) has no detrimental effects on the individual and special properties of the lubricant to which it is added. The mixture can be used as the service lubricant when the equipment is returned to or put in operation.
Applications
Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) is an oil soluble concentrate that has the ability to protect steel surfaces which are above the normal oil level in a system the vapour spaces in an oil storage tank or the oil reservoir in a circulation system would be examples. Shell VSI 8235 (Concentrate) is recommended for use in all enclosed oil lubrication systems where rusting is likely to occur because of the presence of steam condensate or atmospheric moisture in the system. Typical applications for them are: Oil lubricated rolling bearing and gear housings, reservoirs, oil piping, and similar circulation system components. Machine tool housings where the machines may be idle over a weekend or for even longer periods of time. Steam turbine lubrication systems where corrosion of oil gravity tanks or oil storage tank walls and overheads is occurring. Any machinery that is actually idle or in intermittent use and which is therefore susceptible to rusting because the oil in use gradually drains down from internal surfaces. recommended Dosage Shell VSI 8235 is recommended for use at 2% volume solution and is added to the existing oil already in the equipment. It should not be used at higher concentrations as this may result in equipment damage.

Applications
The Association of American Railways (AAR) have developed a grease specification AAR M-942 (Revised 1992), designed to eliminate field lubrication, so that they only have to grease bearings when rail cars are brought to the shop for wheel repair. This practice requires a grease capable of performing in the bearings for hundreds of thousands of kilometres or up to 10 years, without the need for re-lubrication. Shell Alvania EP Grease D is specifically designed as a long life railway bearing grease meeting the above AAR requirements.

Applications
Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 is particularly recommended for use in high temperature (150C), lightly loaded industrial bearings. It is recommended for use where long operational life and extended re-greasing intervals are an important consideration.
Re-lubrication
Grease life varies considerably from application to application, even with bearings operating under normally identical conditions. Variables such as air flow, dirt and humidity can have a considerable effect in addition to the more commonly recognised parameters of load, speed and temperature. The use of Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 usually permits considerable extension of the re-lubrication interval.
I.157
Industry

Oxidation Stability
Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 have a high temperature oxidation inhibitor system to help ensure that they will withstand high operating temperatures without forming deposits. Unlike the soap thickeners used in most greases, the diurea thickener in Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 does not catalyse grease oxidation, indeed the diurea thickener offers inherent anti-oxidant properties. This contributes to longer grease life at higher temperatures. The base oil component of Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 is a specially selected high viscosity index mineral oil with excellent oxidation and evaporation resistance.
Sealing
The rheology of Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 is such that at low shear rates and with heating the consistency increases. Consequently, in bearings operating at high temperatures the grease remains in place providing good sealing and continuous lubrication even in the presence of vibration.
Water Washout
Shell Stamina Grease RL 2 exhibits very good resistance to water washout by immersion or spray.

Shell alexia lS
Special cylinder oil for low-speed diesel engines Shell Alexia LS is a special 40BN, SAE 50 cylinder lubricant, for improved piston running conditions in low speed crosshead diesel engines burning low sulphur fuels. Performance Features Applications
Reduced piston deposits The reduced ash level of Shell Alexia LS helps to avoid excessive piston top land deposits, which can sometimes build up when 70BN oils are used with low sulphur fuel. Good piston ring and port cleanliness Shell Alexia LS contains hidden detergency, not reflected in the BN of the product. This enables it to keep the ring belt and scavenge air ports clean in spite of the reduced BN. Greater feed rate flexibility The control of deposits and lower ash allows Shell Alexia LS to be used over a wider range of feed rates with less danger of excessive deposits, than a 70BN cylinder oil.
Cylinders of low-speed crosshead diesel engines burning fuels with sulphur content below 2%wt, where the designer recommends a lower Base Number (BN) oil to reduce the risk of sudden severe wear or scuffing.
Shell Alexia LS is approved by Wartsila (Sulzer). An approval trial with MAN B&W is in progress.

Shell Melina S 30
Multifunctional lubricant for low speed marine diesel engines Shell Melina S is a high performance multifunctional low speed diesel engine lubricant based on a blend of highly refined high viscosity index mineral oils and a balanced selection of additives. It is designed to provide the highest levels of machinery protection in highly rated low speed marine engines, but being multifunctional, can also be used in many different items of marine equipment and used to rationalise the number of grades of lubricant carried on board ship. Please note that Shell Melina S 30 is NOT recommended for trunk-piston engines and in these cases Shell Melina 30 should be used. Performance Features
Engine operation and reliability Shell Melina S 30 effectively neutralises the highly corrosive combustion acids which can contaminate the main system when cylinder oil drains leak past piston rod glands. Good resistance to corrosion results in protection of metal surfaces from corrosion. Good detergency keeps crankcases and under piston spaces clean and helps optimise efficiency. Good air release and antifoam properties mean that air is released from the oil without foaming. Control Maintenance Costs Good Oxidation stability combats thermal degradation of the oil and helps extend its useful life. Good water shedding properties mean that water can be easily removed by centrifuge. Extreme pressure properties make the oil suitable to many gear oil applications. Re-assurance Shell Melina S 30 is recommended for use in low speed diesel engine.
Applications
Low speed marine diesel engine crankcase and piston cooling systems. Turbochargers, geared transmissions, oil lubricated stern tubes and deck machinery. All ancillary equipment requiring an SAE 30 oil.

Shell argina S
Medium-speed trunk-piston diesel engine oil Shell Argina S is a multifunctional crankcase lubricant for certain medium-speed diesel engines operating on residual fuel. Performance Features
Some medium and high speed engines burning distillate fuel, where a high BN, high ash lubricant is suitable. Marine engine reduction gears and certain other ship-board applications, where specialist lubricants are not required. Medium-speed engines burning residual fuel need very specialised lubricants. Heavy fuels contaminate the oil with asphaltenes, requiring special types of detergency to avoid sludges. The combustion of high sulphur fuels produces sulphur acids, which cause high wear rates of piston rings and cylinder liners unless neutralised by a high basicity reserve in the oil. The oil is in service for very long periods, so centrifugal separators are used to remove water and combustion contaminants from the oil.
Engine cleanliness Has built a reputation over many years for very good engine cleanliness. Rapid neutralisation of acidic combustion products Gives long-term protection against corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Thermal stability and resistance to oxidation Provides excellent high temperature deposit control and contributes to long oil life. Suitability for centrifugal separators High detergency/low dispersancy formulation releases contaminants and water readily in centrifugal separators.
Applications
Medium-speed industrial or marine propulsion and auxiliary engines, burning residual fuel oils, which create conditions of moderate oil stress. These conditions usually occur: in engine designs more than five years old, or where oil consumption is 1.5g/kWh or more, or in newer designs where load factors are predominantly 70% or less, or where fuels with sulphur <2% are in use.

It is mainly used for the lubrication of stern tube bearings and protection of tail shafts in systems incorporating lip seal stern tube glands, but also some face seals. Performance Features
Cost effectiveness Shell Strombus MP absorbs high amounts of seawater. There is no need to reduce the concentration of seawater emulsified in the oil until it reaches levels of over 20%. Helps minimise risks of water ingress Water is absorbed to form a stable emulsion which continues to offer good lubrication and protection against corrosion. The oil and its emulsion are sufficiently fluid to circulate around the stern tube bearing oil system. High level of protection Its unique combination of base oils and carefully selected additives, give good emulsibility whilst offering a high level of protection to the metal surfaces, in the presence of water. Miscibility Compatible with most commercially available oils used for stern tube lubrication. Approvals Accepted by most leading seal and bearing manufacturers. Suitable for Viton or Nitrile seals.
Applications
The large majority of ships today are fitted with oil lubricated stern tubes. The stern tube bearings and the tail shaft are required to operate reliably, often in extreme conditions due to vibration, water ingress, flexing of the vessels structure, movement of the vessel in heavy seas and with variations of speed and temperature. Shell Strombus MP is specifically designed to be compatible with diesel engine oils used for stern tube lubrication. It is also suitable for the lubrication of the fin shafts of certain retractable stabilisers.

How clean is your engine oil? Shell Marine Products has unique and comprehensive tests that not only tell you immediately the state of your engine oil, but can help you save money by extending the period between oil changes: Index of contamination Measures the concentration of insoluble soots in diesel engine oil. Too much, and sludge can form, leading to excessive wear in engine components. Merit of dispersancy Measures the ability of the lubricant in a diesel engine to carry combustion contaminants in suspension. Too low, and deposits can accumulate in the bottom of the crankcase leading to problems with filters and/or purification equipment. Wear Particle Index (WPI ) WPI helps us to tell you more about your machine, regardless of type. From super clean hyrdrualic power systems to the hardest working diesel engines, WPI can make the difference between timely shut down or costly breakdown. WPI is derived from a test that measures the amount of paramagnetic material in a sample. The most common paramagnetic material found in oil samples from marine machinery is iron, therefore WPI correlates very closely to the metallic iron content in a sample regardless of particle size. If the WPI increases at a rate greater than normal compared to Fe by ICP spectroscopy, this indicates increasing quantities of iron particles with sizes greater than three microns. This should be taken as a warning that abnormal wear may be occuring in the machine. If the WPI increases at a rate less than normal compared to iron by spectroscopy, this indicates the presence of non-metallic iron. Corrosion salts and most iron oxides are non-magnetic.

Shell Running-in Oil S.7294 has been developed for a good run-in as well as internal rust protection of new and rebuilt diesel engines.
Applications
It fulfills the requirements of the technical delivery specification of the German Army (Technischen Lieferbedingungen des BMW Spezifikationen).
Shell Running-in Oil S.7294 can be used for all diesel engines, e.g. vehicles and stationary engines (engines, ship, rail, auxiliary), even in the highest performance class. A good run-in saves on test bed costs and assures trouble free services. During the running-in the engine should be loaded up rapidly. The simultaneous protective action proves that no extra run with rust protection oil has to be performed. Due to its double characteristics (running-in and rust protection) the oil is not suitable for continuous full load service during later use. But it can be used for emergency/auxiliary devices where the engine is being shut down for longer time after short time of service.

Shell Donax TZ
Premium heavy duty transmission oil Shell Donax TZ is a premium quality, heavy-duty automatic transmission oil specifically designed in conjunction with ZF as an exclusive lubricant for the newest generation of ZF Ecomat transmissions. Shell Donax TZ is Shell's ultimate performance automatic transmission fluid formulated to allow extended drain intervals even under the most severe conditions. Performance Features
Exclusive technology Shell Donax TZ has been developed in conjunction with ZF. It uses synthetic base oils and an exclusive additive technology providing Shell's ultimate in transmission performance. Maximum oil drain interval potential This technology developed specifically for ZF transmissions is designed to allow for the maximum oil drain intervals under all operating conditions. Oil Drain Interval (ODI) can be extended up to 150,000 km or three years, which ever comes first. In case of heavy operation conditions follow ODI recommendations from ZF service. Changing from mineral or semi-synthetic oils to Shell Donax TZ will require shorter interim oil drain intervals. Please consult the ZF TE-ML 14 specification manual table 2 (version 2201-2003) for complete details. The excellent wear protection, shear stability and friction characteristics of the additive technology provides Shell's best in oil performance helping the equipment operator to extend oil drain intervals without risk to the life of the transmission components. Extremely low temperature fluidity The physical characteristics provided by the additive technology and synthetic base oils allows for extremely low temperature fluidity, further protecting the transmission components from premature wear under extreme operating conditions. This feature is complimented by high temperature oxidation stability for applications where high operating temperatures are experienced. Shift comfort and maintenance costs The combination of these features and benefits translate into smooth shifting comfort, and potentially lower maintenance cost due to extended drain intervals and transmission component life.

Personal Hygiene
Shell lubricants are quite safe to use provided ordinary care is taken to minimise skin contamination and to avoid breathing oil mist or vapours. However, prolonged improper use can cause dermatitis or other skin conditions or even, where heavy contamination occurs over many years, skin cancer. Those at risk are people who use oils every day over periods of months or years, not those who work with oils only very occasionally. The risks can be avoided by carrying out the following simple health precautions. For advice contact a Poisons Information Centre: Phone: Australia New Zealand or a Doctor 13 11 26, 0800 764 766) (at once)

Personal protection
To minimise skin contamination by oils, wear protective gloves and aprons and suitable outer overalls. Where soluble oil concentrates are used, wear goggles or face visors. Protective clothing should be cleaned at regular intervals to remove oil. It is most important to avoid wearing oil-soaked clothing, and hands should be cleaned with disposable wipes which should not be kept in overall or trouser pockets after use.

Viscosity Classifications
Industrial Lubricant Classifications
iSo (international Standards organisation) viscosity classification
The ISO viscosity classification uses mm2/s (cSt) units and relates to viscosity at 40oC. It consists of a series of 18 viscosity brackets between 1.98 mm2/s and 1650 mm2/s, each of which is defined by a number. The numbers indicate to the nearest whole number, the mid points of their corresponding brackets. For example, ISO viscosity grade 32 relates to the viscosity bracket 28.8 to 35.2 mm2/s, the mid point of which is 32.0 mm2/s. This is illustrated in the table below, which shows the ISO viscosity grade numbers, the mid-points of each bracket, and the viscosity limits. This system is now used to classify all shell industrial lubricating oils where viscosity is an important criterion in the selection of the oil.
