Lewisville United Methodist Church

About 1850, a Methodist Protestant congregation was formed in Lewisville and a log church and log parsonage were built. Both buildings were destroyed by fire. In 1891 the church was built at its present location. The new church was built facing what is now SR 78, but in 1923 the building was turned to face SR 145, with an addition added. A basement was built in 1947. The restroom, kitchen and pastors study were completed in 1950. Lewisville United Methodist Church has an excellent choir and a working womens group with Carol Hayes, as president; Sharon Robinson, vice-president; Ruth Wittenbrook, treasurer and Betty Merckle, secretary. With the construction of a log church dedicated to Saint Peter and Paul, built near Doughertys Settlement in Washington Township in 1833, and with the establishment of log churches dedicated to St. Joseph in Burkhart and St. John the Baptist near Miltonsburg in 1841, the Catholic settlers sought to establish their lives and faith in the promise of this new territory. Throughout the years with a deep-rooted faith in the love and mercy of God, Catholics have continued to live out the Sacred Tradition of Faith as handed down from the Apostles. The Catholic Faith Communities of Monroe County, united to the universal Church and under the guidance, leadership and pastoral care of the bishop of The Diocese of Steubenville, strive each day to preach the Gospel by word and example, bring the light of Christs presence to the growing darkness of the world. Committed to the faithful celebration of the Eucharist and the other sacraments and sacred rites, as the visible sign of Gods grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to His Church in which His Divine Life is dispensed to the faithful. We seek to promote opportunities for prayer and Catholic devotions, allowing for the ongoing spiritual growth of the faithful. The early settlers, soon after constructing their churches in what would become Monroe County, sought to provide an education for their children. Land was cleared and school erected. Seeking to continue that commitment to Education and Faith formation; St. Sylvester Central continues a 135-year tradition of outstanding Catholic education. Our motto says it best, Where Faith and Knowledge Meet. Yet as a people of faith, we are committed to young and old alike and their journey of discovery - deepening and expanding the understanding of scripture and church teachings. The Catholic faith communities of St. John the Baptist, St. John Bosco and St. Sylvester, seek to reach out and minister to the sick, homebound, those who feel alienated, excluded, wounded or unworthy of the active practice of their faith; the poor, less fortunate and all who have special need of the Churchs care and attention. We welcome those who have no church family to join with us. We welcome the opportunities to cooperate with other denominations in various community outreach or prayer opportunities. The pastoral office is located at 334 South Main Street, Woodsfield, Ohio.

The students, faculty and staff braved the cold to participate in a Walk-A-Thon for Manna. The community service project raised over $1,700 for the local Manna food pantry! As a continuation of the service project, students in grades 5 through 8 volunteer at the food pantry each week.

In October of each year students celebrate Red Ribbon Week, learning how to say no to drugs and alcohol and how to make wise life choices. Kindergartener Sidney Shook won the poster contest and her artwork was displayed for many weeks on a billboard in Woodsfield!

Where Faith and Knowledge Meet.

Be it known to all who enter our school, that Christ is the reason for this school, the unseen, but ever-present teacher in its classes, the model of its faculty, the inspiration of its students.
