Lihs. This book is available in the USF Bookstore. Introduction to Dance is a Gordon Rule class and fulfills the Fine Arts requirement of the General Education curriculum. Designed for majors and non-majors, the course gives one an anthropological presentation of dance by placing the subject matter in a context which is tangible to all life. Classroom content will provide cultural and aesthetic aspects through which one can become intimately intertwined with dance/life/the arts. You will study the art and language of dance as a humanistic arts discipline through lecture, discussion, and observation of both video and concert attendance. You will be able to engage fully in the exploration of dance/life by perusing and digesting materials and applying them to real life/real cultural situations. This course is designed to build your understanding and appreciation of dance and the essence of dance through a strong emphasis on dance as a diverse, creative and educational expression and as life via observations, as well as writing, movement, and discussion experiences. You will be given class work and outside assignments that allow you to examine dance kinesthetically (physically) and expressively as an art form of life. We will also focus on the learning skills of abstract, analytical, conceptual, and creative thinking, as well as the development of writing and oral skills. Thus, the layout of the course will allow you to develop life strategies that cross all subjects of studies and enhance the opportunity to truly learn. You will experience dance history through *fundamental techniques, movement experience, and aesthetics. Via course reading materials, observation of videos and live performances, and in-class exploration, a variety of dance forms will be presented/sampled, e.g. imitative, ethnic/folk dance, ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, social dance, street dance (hip-hop) and video dance. We will also venture into improvisation, composition and choreography. Some sessions will contain a warm-up that will consist of either conditioning, or entrainment, or isolations, or full body movement, or some yoga inspired work (as well as careful stretching) or some combination of these components. These sessions may also contain center-floor and across the floor exercises. Combinations will come from different genres of dance that are inspired by various types of music. *This is not a technique class, so there will not be movement and/or technique every class meeting. This course is a theory based class; therefore, discussion and inquiry about dance and how it relates to life and vice-versa are key elements. It is highly interactive. Course Objectives: 1. To understand, appreciate and experience a world view of dance as an art form with a historical perspective. 2. To discover the elements of dance through physical exploration, investigation, observation, and discussion. 3. To provide substantial knowledge about the dance field, reflect the changing contemporary dance scene, reflect the contemporary social scene, and identify a vision of our relationship to the arts. 4. To develop an understanding of the choreographic process and production process (collaborative relationships), the preparation of the dancer and performance techniques. 5. To develop an awareness of the connections between dance and healthful living, between dance and thoughts (the mind/body connection), and to learn life skills through dance/movement. Evaluative Criteria: 1450 pts. 1. Written Assignments & Choreography Projects 1150 pts Proper Formatting for Written Assignments: All written assignments will be typed and double-spaced, except as noted. Grading will include form (organization, spelling, grammar, punctuation, appearance, and completeness), content, and when appropriate, creativity. All work must have a title page with the name of the student, class section, meeting times, word count, date submitted and the title of the paper on it. All of this information should also be on each page of your work. Late work will not be accepted. Work will not be accepted via e-mail without prior permission given.

a. Personal History & Personal Dance Vision Paper 2 pages (500 words)/25 pts (Week 3;
January 26 Thursday) Page 1 In a narrative format, write about your family history and cultural background. Include any practiced traditions or rituals. Page 2 In a narrative form, summarize your past dance experiences (e.g. formal training, social/popular, dancing, performing). Also include a detailed personal vision or fantasy of a dance or performance experience (e.g. music video, Broadway musical, Stomp). Describe why you find this fantasy interesting or exciting and how you think it would make you feel. Refer to the A Few Words About Writing (Grammar) handout that are included with this syllabus for writing assistance.

b. Character Study Analysis Questionnaire (250 words)/25 pts (Week 7; February 23


Tuesday) This is preparation for the Magazine Character Study Project. You must choose a person, place, thing, animal, color, or etc. from a magazine and bring whatever or whomever you chose to life. You will have to build its character. I will give you fifteen (15-20) questions designed to help you with this. Then you must add five (5) additional questions to this list. Answer these questions and submit them along with all of the questions. For writing assistance, refer to the A Few Words About Writing (Grammar ) handout that will be e-mailed to you. Attach the picture of your magazine character. All questions should be answered with complete sentences. c. Observation Paper (500 words)/50 pts (*Floating Due Date: Week 9, March 5 Monday to Week 14, April 10 - Tuesday) Observe one of the designated dance technique classes at USF. Describe what you observe in terms of space, time, force, relationships, contact, use of levels, performance focus, attire, weight qualities, musicality, dynamics, etc. Refer to the Elements of Dance and A Few Words About Writing (Grammar and Movement Description sections) handouts to help you with your writing and content of this paper. Include on your title page the name of the instructor that is teaching, the name of the class and its regularly scheduled meeting times, and the day and date that you observed. *This paper may be submitted during a class meeting date or placed in my mailbox Monday, Wednesday, or Friday anytime during this time period.

d. Documentary Review And Reaction Paper (500-600 words)/50 pts (Week 15; April 17

Your group will have to watch a particular documentary as chosen from a select title of documentaries that will be provided by the instructor. Each group member must invite at least one other person (not enrolled in this class) to view it with them. Each member must get their guest's reaction and thoughts on the particular video. The group will then submit one paper that will serve as a fulfillment of this requirement for all group members. It should include each member's reaction to the documentary as well as each member's guest's reaction and thoughts on the particular video. The paper should include a summary of the documentary. Your group will also present its findings and reactions to the class on the due date. Lastly, this documentary will serve as a basis for your final exam. See more information under syllabus item 1. i. iv.

Then, choose a minimum of one piece/section that really captivated you and expound on it using the A Few Words About Writing (Expanding Your Response To A Work Of Art section) Handout. Place your name on both the ticket stub and the program and staple them to the back page. You must submit typed notes for Cancer Is Curable Now, Body Stories, Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes, and the Student Dance Concert 2012. There is no specific word count for these notes; however, make sure that your notes will allow anyone who did not see the show/video to get some decent idea about it from reading them. For Cancer Is Curable Now and Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes viewing, you must invite at least one other person (not enrolled in this class) to view it with you. You must get their reaction and thoughts on the particular video and include these in your typed notes about the video as well as your reaction and thoughts. f. Assignments from the required textbook, Miming for Magic, and handouts 160 pts These will consist of Discussion Questions for each chapter. The questions for the book are in the back of the book. The questions for Miming for Magic and your handouts are included with this syllabus. The format for all of these assignments is as follows: Q1. What is blah, blah, blah? (Bold the question.) A1. The blah, blah, blah is yadda yadda yadda.... This will be done as a group assignment. Therefore, one assignment per group must be submitted. Put your names, class section, meeting times, the days date, and the chapter and title of the assignment on every page. Each person in the group must contribute to each assignment. Their name should be beside the question that they answered. Follow the proper format for written assignments along with the above formatting for questions. All homework handed in that does not follow these criteria will automatically receive a lowered grade. Each set of questions will be worth 10 points. Together, they will total the 160 points. g. Research Paper (1200 words)/200 points total The research paper will be on a topic of personal interest related to this course and approved by the instructor; there will be a minimum of four to five sources cited in the paper, including one periodical. If you have difficulty finding a periodical, tell me. (Unless you make reference to the source within the sentence that contains a quotation, always cite sources of any quotations immediately following them within the body of the paper.) Also, you cannot list only internet websites as sources in your bibliography. Papers whose topics and outlines have not been approved will not be accepted. Incomplete papers and papers with improper documentation will automatically receive a lowered grade. Topic Selection: January 17 Tuesday (25 pts) Proposal/Rough Bibliography/Outline: February 2 - Thursday (25 pts) Title Page/Introduction/Conclusion: February 16 - Thursday (25 pts) Completed paper: April 5 Thursday (125 pts) If these components are not submitted in their entirety and on schedule, you will lose the 25 points attached to that particular component. You will receive partial credit for partial work. The completed paper includes: the Title page, Outline, Body (inclusive of the introduction and conclusion), Works Cited and Bibliography. Refer to the A Few Words About Writing (Grammar and A Term Paper Or Take-home Examination sections) handout to help you with writing your paper. 4

h. Journal (Check Quick Reference Due Dates & Important Dates Schedule; Fourteen Submissions) (10 pts each/140 pts total) As a part of this class, you will be given a thought/s for the day per class. These thoughts are intended to assist you with developing the essence of your kinesthetic dance and may be applied to the everyday movements of life. Entries must be typed. Your journal should consist of one thought/s for the day per page and their reflections and kept in a folder*. For each thought, in your reflection, discuss the following questions: First, what does the thought mean to you? Second, what relevance does it have to life? Third, how does it affect your mindset (e.g., closed or opened, etc.)? Fourth, what relevance does it have to dance in terms of the psychology of dance? Fifth, reflect on the effects of concepts (ideas) derived from it on movement. That is, what does this type of thinking do to the body constrict movement or allow the body to expand/breathe, etc.? Sixth, expound on how you can apply these concepts to your daily physical and mental activity. Also, if you did apply these concepts to your daily activities, what was your experience? Seventh, expound on your perceptions/thoughts about class activities relating to these thoughts. Eighth, describe a physical movement or a series of physical movements that you would do in response to the thought. These movements will be used in the final group choreography project. Lastly, relate the thought to the current Appreciating Dance and Miming for Magic chapters. Also, as a separate part of your journal entry, you are to reflect on something that makes you happy. This reflection does not need to follow the questions used for the thoughts of the day. *Always save a copy of your journal for yourself. i. Choreography Journal, Dance Studies, and Final Project (300 pts total) You will be assigned to a specific choreography group and there will be four dance studies that you will help to create with your group. These dance studies will be created using time outside of class and, when time permits, class time. The three dance studies (40% total) are as follows: i. Project I: Imitative study in a choreographic style (50 pts) (Week five; February 7/February 9 - Tuesday/Thursday)

ii. Project II: Magazine Character Movement study (50 pts) (Week eight;
February 28/March 1 - Tuesday/Thursday)

iii. Project III: Gestural study based on abstraction (50 pts) (Week twelve;
March 27/March 29 - Tuesday/Thursday) You will be given gestures that you will have to incorporate in this piece of choreography. Plus, each person will have to come up with a certain number of their own gestures.

iv. Final Project: Choreography project based on compositional form (100


pts) (Final Exam Week -- week seventeen: May 1/3 (Your group must schedule a time with me via e-mail.) This project will be one of text and movement and will include the topic of your 5

The University of South Florida College of the Arts - School of Theater & Dance research papers and movements derived in response to two thoughts from your personal journal as described in item 1. h of this syllabus. It must be in the format of a story with a clear beginning, middle, and a clear resolution. The documentary that your group watched must serve as a basis/theme for this story. You must say the subject of your research paper at some point during the story. You must also say the journal entry as you are doing the movement for it. Each group members signature move and sound must be included. Also, your groups signature move and sound must be included. You will be given further instruction on this project as the course progresses. The final examination for this class will occur during the week of finals at the normally occurring class times on both Tuesday and Thursday. Your group will need to schedule which day is preferable and arrange it with me. If your group absolutely cannot present on the regularly scheduled meeting times of this course, they can arrange to present during the time slot of the other Introduction to Dance class.. Choreography Journal 5 written pages/50 pts (Final Exam Week -- week seventeen: May 1/3 when your group presents its final) One journal will suffice for your group. Members of the group will write down their experience with choreography during all creative group projects. Here are some things to include: the creative process, individual and group feelings about the project, explanations of movements (e.g. why you did a certain movement), descriptions of movements (also includes the qualities of these actions), what you learned from the project whether it is a life lesson (e.g. mutual respect), structure of the choreography, and/or anything pertaining to dance, etc. Though entries may be handwritten, it is permissible to type this journal. This journal is due on the day that your group presents its final exam. 2. Midterm Examination (100 pts) (Week six; Take Home February 16 Thursday; Due February 23 Tuesday of Week seven) This will be an essay and short answer test. It will cover material from the required text, handouts from class, and material covered/discussed in class. *There will be no makeup exam, so do not ask. * 3. Final Project (100 pts) (Final Exam Week -- week seventeen: May 1/3 (Your group must schedule a time with me via e-mail.) See more information under syllabus item 1. i. iv. This is actually your groups final choreography project as aforementioned. You will be given further instruction on it as the course progresses. You are responsible for setting up the project outside of classroom time. 4. Attendance, Conduct, Class participation/Studio Work, and Creative Group Projects 300 pts You will be evaluated on your active participation in class, discussions, interaction, response, and studio work. You are expected to bring a positive and pro-active attitude toward each class, and be willing to incorporate information and corrections given both generally and specifically as they pertain to you, your dancing and your work. You are also expected to bring an open mind and be respectful of others and of yourself. Lastly, laying down in class is prohibited without the express permission of the instructor and counts as an absence because you were not actually present anyway. Attendance Policy: The experiential nature of this class and wide range of material covered requires regular attendance. Poor attendance will lower your grade in class participation, studio work, and creative projects. Lateness and early exits are both disrespectful and inappropriate. *Showing 6

The University of South Florida College of the Arts - School of Theater & Dance up to class after the first 15 minutes is considered an absence. Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from class due to the observation of a major religious observance must provide written notice of the date(s) to the instructor in writing by the third class meeting. In the event a class is going to be missed at the last minute due to circumstances beyond your control, you must contact the instructor at one of the numbers listed and leave a detailed message as to why you could not attend class for the day. In addition, all excuses must be submitted in writing to the instructor either in person or placed in her mailbox, which is located on the 2nd floor in this building. The instructor will then evaluate the reasoning and deem whether or not the absence constitutes itself as an excused absence. **Absence from more than 10% of class meetings will affect your grade (2x per week = 3 absences or less). In the event the number of absences exceeds the specified limit, the students grade will be dropped one whole grade for each absence over the maximum. For example, if you have four absences, regardless of how well you did on papers, exams, etc., on that basis alone, you will drop from an A to a B. Five absences will equal a C. Six absences will equal a D. Though extenuating circumstances will be noted, sustained absences due to illness or injury will affect your grade. Dress, etc.: (gum, food or drinks, tobacco etc., are inappropriate) Bare feet are preferable when we dance, but if you need to wear shoes, only non-marking jazz or ballet shoes are allowed. No floor-marking shoes are allowed in the studio. No lotions on the body are allowed as they will make the floor slippery; therefore, it will become a hazard to others using the space. Please wear comfortable fitting exercise clothes that will allow for free movement. Loose pants/sweat pants are ideal. NO jeans, chinos, baggy pants, baseball hats, tight clothing (unless they are dance clothing), short shorts (unless you wear leggings, etc. under them) or loose jewelry are permitted. Long hair should be securely fastened. Feel free to arrive early for class and change in the Dance Department bathrooms on the first floor. Cell Phone Policy: All cell phones must be turned off completely not placed on vibrate while in the classroom. University Declared emergency Information: In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations. During this time, USF may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: Blackboard, Elluminate, Skype, and email messaging and/or an alternate schedule. Its the responsibility of the student to monitor Blackboard site for each class for course specific communication, and the main USF, College, and department websites, emails, and MoBull messages for important general information. *****Content and Requirements of this Syllabus are subject to change depending upon the natural flow of this class.
