19th century soda fountain brings $4.5
million at Schmidt auction of Coca-Cola
memorabilia
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. The catalog
showed a top assessed value of
$125,000 for a soda fountain from
1893. But in an auction, anything can
happen. And it did. When bidding
stopped, the price was $4.5 million.
Im stunned, said Larry Schmidt, or-
ganizer of the auction held by the
Schmidt Museum of Coca-Cola Mem-
orabilia. We thought that maybe it
could go for as high as $1 million. But
this is incredible.
Whos to say what a piece of history is
worth? The soda fountain was built by
the Liquid Carbonic Co. for the
Columbian Exhibition at the Worlds
Fair in Chicago. Its actually two pieces
a front and back bar, both measuring
more than 21 feet long and featuring
exquisite marble bases and counter-
tops with alabaster columns. The two
soda dispensers have alabaster bases
topped with lights featuring stained
leaded-glass lamp shades.
The craftsmanship on this fountain is
off the scale. It is just incredible, ac-
cording to Phil Mooney, head archivist
for The Coca-Cola Company. Mooney
bought many items at the auction for
The Coca-Cola Company archives
some of which may go on display at
the World of Coca-Cola but did not
bid on the soda fountain. In addition to
the incredible craftsmanship of this
piece, it speaks to a bygone era when
Coca-Cola was only a soda-fountain
drink and was establishing itself as the
drink people around the world love.
The soda fountain was bought by an
anonymous bidder who did not attend
the auction, but was bidding by phone.
The two-day auction, March 24 and 25,
took place at the Schmidt Museum of
Coca-Cola Memorabilia in Elizabeth-
town, Ky., which houses the largest pri-
vately owned Coke memorabilia
collection in the world. About 300 peo-
ple attended the event from 30 U.S.
states and two other countries
Canada and Belgium.

...Coca-Cola Auction
Online bidders were registered from
around the world. This was truly an in-
ternational event because of its signif-
icance, says Gary Metz, renowned
Coke memorabilia expert who worked
with the Schmidt Museum on selecting
auction items and assessing their
value. There hasnt been an auction
of Coke memorabilia in decades that
can rival what the Schmidts have done.
What weve witnessed here in Eliza-
bethtown is truly historic.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Seven decades
after it was cut by DC Comics, the
check sent to Jerry Siegel and Joe
Shuster for their creation of Superman
is up for auction.
Made out to the duo for $412, the
check includes a line item for $130
showing that DC paid for full ownership
and rights to the man from Krypton and
paved the way for comic books, TV,
radio and films. But, a legal dispute
over creator's rights to the character is
still far from settled. Stephen Fishler,
CEO of ComicConnect.com and Me-
tropolis Collectibles, said the check
went up for auction Monday through
April 16. By late Monday night, bidding
had jumped from $1 to $20,500. "It is
an important historic document ... re-
lated to comic books," he said. "There
is a quality to it that talks about the
American dream, to create something
and be successful. Obviously, in this
case, there are two parties, both feeling
that they are right.
Siegel and Shuster created Superman
together while teenagers in Cleveland,
Ohio, in the early 1930s. The charac-
ter's first appearance was in "Action
Comics" No. 1 in April 1938.
The check was saved by a staffer at
DC Comics in the 1970s whose heirs
consigned it to ComicConnect, Fishler
said, adding that it sat undisturbed in a
drawer for 38 years.

100-year-old Silver Ghost Rolls-Royce

One of the rarest Rolls-Royce cars ever
created is expected to fetch 2million

The 1912 Double Pullman Limousine -

The style chosen echoed the luxurious
'Pullman' Railway carriages pioneered

upper echelons of Edwardian society.'
It is one of the last working from the
7,874 manufactured between 1906 and
1926.
Many other Rollers of this era were
converted into ambulances and other
types of emergency vehicle during
World War One. But the Corgi - chassis
number 1907 - remained unharmed.
The car sports a 7.3 litre, six cylinder
engine still running smoothly, it runs at
15 miles to the gallon and can cruise at
50-60mph. The car was chosen by
Corgi Toys to be a model in their 'Corgi
Classics' series, and thereby being
identifiable to car enthusiasts of all
ages
Since the Second World War, it has
graced a handful of the world's finest
known automobile collections: those of
John C. Sword and Denis de Ferranti
in the UK and latterly those of Richard
Solove and John O'Quinn in the US.
Its sale follows the death of renowned
collector Mr O'Quinn in a road accident.
The veteran vehicle is so desirable that
enthusiasts from around the world are
expected to bid on it when it finally
goes under
the hammer
at the
Goodwood
Festival of
Speed on
Friday, June
29.
The Rolls-
Royce has
headlights,
c a r r i a g e
lights and
rear lights, inflatable tires and it runs al-
most silently. The bodywork is de-
signed for comfort, not speed, and the
elegance of the Silver Ghosts created
the great name of the motor firm.
Mr. Knight said: The quality of this car
is great - so great that in the 1960s
Corgi designed a toy car based on it. It
subsequently acquired the nickname
The Corgi Rolls Royce. Most Rolls
Royce cars of this age have lost their
coachwork. Many were adapted in the
First World War for use as ambulances.
When this was new, it would probably
have been driven by a chauffeur and
there is no seat next to his.
Speed was a secondary consideration
after quality, but it would have cruised
at 50 or 60mph, but could have gone
faster. You have to remember that
roads in those days were not like the
ones we have today and the ride would
be much smoother on modern roads.
It is a heavy car with leaf spring sus-
pension which was similar to the sus-
pension on coaches that were pulled
by horses.
It is coming up for sale because of the
sad passing of the US collector John
OQuinn. The car has graced some of
the great collections and has a superb
provenance. It has been restored and
can be used - but probably sparingly.
It could go anywhere in the world and
we expect it could go for $3.874M plus.
