Here come the millionaires!

The rst American to become a millionaire was James Jacob Astor. He arrived in the United States from Germany in 1784, just after the end of our Revolutionary War with England. Astor started making a lot of money by trading furs with Indians and then opening a fur goods shop in New York City. He then made a whole lot more money by buying and selling land in the Manhattan section of New York City. Today, the United States leads the world in the number of millionaires. In fact, we have 10.5 million millionaires, even though three million Americans lost their place as millionaires during the nancial crisis between 2006 and 2008, according to CNNMoney. Now, more than half of the worlds millionaires live in three countries the United States, Japan and Germany. And China is expected to lead the world in the number of new millionaires through the year 2020. Meanwhile, do you know about ination? Ination causes you to pay more for the same thing as time goes by. For instance, if the ination rate is 2% this year, then a $1 pack of gum would cost you $1.02 next year. That goes for millionaires, as well. A guy with a million bucks in 1959 would basically have the same buying power as a guy with $7.3 million in 2009.
