ASSIGNMENT I CE 312 (WATER RESOURCE ENGINEERING) Department of Civil Engineering Date of submission: February, 07, 2012

1. Design a regime channel for a discharge of 70 cumecs and silt factor of 1.05 using Laceys Theory. 2. Design an irrigation channel to carry 45 cumecs. The channel is to be laid at a slope of 1 in 4500. The critical velocity ratio for the soil is 1.05. Use Kutters rugosity coefficient as 0.0225. 3. Solve the previous problem using Garrets Diagrams. 4. Design an irrigation channel to carry 50 cumecs of discharge, with B/D ratio as 3. The critical velocity ratio is 1.1. Use Kutters Rugosity coefficient as 0.0225. Use Kennedys method. 5. Determine the time required to irrigate a strip of land of 0.05hactres in area from a tubewell with a discharge of 0.03 cumec. The infiltration capacity of the soil may be taken as 5cm/h and the average depth of flow on the field is 10m. Also determine the maximum area that can be irrigated from this tube-well. 6. A stream of 130 litres per second was diverted from a canal and 120 litres per second were delivered to the filed. An area of 2 hactres was irrigated in 8 hours. The effective depth of root zone was 1.8m. The runoff loss in the filed was 420 cubic m. the depth of water penetration varied linearly from 1.5m at the head end of the filed to 1m at the tail end. Available moisture holding capacity of the soil is 20cm per metre depth of soil. It is required to determine the water conveyance efficiency, water application efficiency, water storage efficiency and water distribution efficiency. Irrigation was started at a moisture extraction level of 45% of the available moisture. 7. Determine the pan evaporation from the following data for the month of July using Christiansen method. Latitude 2230, Elevation +200m, Month: July, Mean Temperature 33C, Mean wind velocity at 0.5m above ground=170km/day, Mean RH=40%, Mean percentage of sunshine: 92%, Use tables for extra terrestrial radiation. What is the consumptive use for the month of July for a crop having consumptive use coefficient of 0.8? 8. Determine the volume of water required to be diverted from the head works to irrigate are of 7500 ha using the data given in the table below. Assume 85% as the effective precipitation to take care of the consumptive use of the crop. Also assume 60% efficiency of water application in the field and 75% as the conveyance efficiency of canal.

9. Compute the total consumptive use (Cu) from a drainage basin during the month of July by Penmans formula. The following data is given: Latitude: 33 Elevation 200 m Mean monthly temperature 35C Mean relative humidity 30% Mean observed sun shine hours per day 13.5h Mean wind velocity at 2m height 65km/day Use standard charts for the required data. 10. The culturable command area of a watercourse is 1500 ha. Intensities of sugarcane and wheat crops are 22% and 35% respectively. The duties for the crops at the head of the watercourse are 700ha/cumec and 1900ha/cumec, respectively. Find (a) the discharge required at the head of the watercourse and (b) determine the design discharge at the outlet, assuming a time factor equal to 0.75. 11. A reservoir is proposed to be constructed to command an area of 1,80,000 ha. It is anticipated that ultimately sugar and paddy would both be irrigated equal to 25% of the command and Rabi equal to 40% of the command, making a total annual irrigation equal to 90% of the commanded area. (a) Work out the storage required for the reservoir, assuming suitable water requirement. Assume canal losses at 20% of the head discharge and reservoir evaporation and dead storage losses at 18% of gross capacity. (b) For the above crop pattern, fix the channel capacity in the head reaches. 12. A sandy loam soil holds water at 140 mm/m depth between field capacity and permanent wilting point. The root depth of the crop is 35cm and the allowable depletion of water is 30%. The daily water use by the crop is 6mm/day. The area to be irrigated is 100ha and water can be delivered at 35lps. The surface irrigation application efficiency is 45%. There are no rainfall and ground water contribution. Determine: (a) Allowable depletion depth between irrigations. (b) Frequency of irrigation Assignment 1 (Water Resource Engineering, VI Sem) Jan 2012 Page 2 of 3

(c) Net application depth of water (d) Volume of water required (e) Time to irrigate 8ha plot 13. Work out the irrigation schedule based on the soil moisture concept, given the following information. Also extract the data on the total depth of irrigation water required and the respective dates of irrigation water supply:
