Spring greetings from Bachrodt!

It takes a neighborhood
Stray dog finds a family in Rosemary Gardens

elcome Rosemary Garden's new resident Abe Ferrari Spoon. You may have noticed Abe who was a very popular neighborhood stray, often crossing North First Street and bringing concern and dread about the possibilities of one dog braving such a busy street. Many tried to catch him but he was quick and outsmarted Rosemary Gardens finest. But a cold night and a warm bed led the dog to a permanent home in Rosemary Gardens. Rosemary Garden's resident Laurie Spoon-Potter solicited help from Marge Cornehl and Garrett Gonzales to help capture the elusive dog. After several weeks of many

Rosemary Garden's neighbors trying to capture the elusive stray finally Angelique and Jon Bollum caught him and delivered him to the hands of his new Mom. Abe joins a family of dogs which include Lorrie and Priscilla and the three of them with their owner Laurie Spoon-Potter. Laurie can often been seen in the neighborhood trying to mange 3 leashes. Spoon-Potter explained the significance of his name, I named him Abe because like Abraham he wandered in the neighborhood for 40 days and 40 nights. Ferrari is his middle name because he slept under John and Angeliques truck and on their porch on Ferrari Ave. Spoon is my maiden name.

tudents at Bachrodt are hard at work. The annual California state testing has begun! Students in grades 2-5 are testing every day for the next 4 weeks. In an effort to alleviate some of the pressure for the students, the PTA and staff at Bachrodt have organized weekly test rallies to keep students motivated to do their best on the test! Throughout the testing period, students earn tickets by practicing good test taking skills and behavior. At the end of each week, during the test rally, students can win prizes as a reward for their effort. The students look forward to the rallies each week, and it gives them a much needed break from a long week of testing. In addition to the testing period, students are currently participating in a reading campaign. They are encouraged to read books HEIDI WOLCOTT to claim prizes at different Vice President, Bachrodt PTA levels. This is the second reading campaign this year at the students request! It is great to see so many students excited to read at Bachrodt! The library has been packed up and work on the renovations has begun! This is a very exciting time for Bachrodt students and faculty and all are anxious to see what the transformation will bring when the library opens again in mid-May. All of the Bachrodt community is so grateful to Target and the generous $100,000 grant that was awarded to the school. Looking aheadstudents are already looking forward to the May Madness carnival on Saturday, May 12th. Please save the date and join us for an afternoon of food, fun and entertainment! All of our dance groups and the choir will be performing something you wont want to miss! We thank all of the Rosemary Gardens neighbors and the RGNA for your continued support of Bachrodt students! Until next time, Heidi Wolcott

Inspirational Neighbor
Name: Liz Summerhayes Volunteer docent art teacher at Bachrodt Elementary
How long have you volunteered at Bachrodt? Early in 2009 I trained at the San Jose Museum of Art in the Let's Look at Art Program. This free innovative program brings art education to more than 25,000 students in the classrooms of Santa Clara County each year. Docents lead students through a fun and interactive presentation while using a broad selection of art reproductions. Although I had a lifelong interest in art I am not an artist nor had I much education in art and so found this program an ideal fit. Before the training was completed, I approached the Principal at the school and was linked up with one of the teachers who immediately contacted several teachers of different grades and we planned several classes. The artworks also culturally represent our diverse Bay Area population. This free innovative program brings art education to more than 25,000 students in the classrooms of Santa Clara County. Docents lead students through a fun and interactive presentation while using a broad selection of art reproductions. How much time per week do/did you spend teaching I set up my own schedule each semester according to the teachers and schedules. So some weeks are many hours and then not again for several weeks. For the last two years I have taken the program to almost all of the classes K-5 at Bachrodt, the Principal is very enthusiastic and supportive. The teachers are excited and the students are very enthusiastic fully participating. At this time Art in the schools is very limited.
We do not actually do any art projects, although many of the teachers follow-up with hands on projects after my presentation. We took our program to over 25,000 students last year in Santa Clara County, I gave over 50 presentations myself.

Describe a typical lesson. The presentation is 30-50 minutes according to the class. I take in a portfolio of posters for the students to look at and after explaining the basic elements of art, they explore all the paintings interpreting what they see and what story the art tells them. It is total participation on behalf of the students, I just facilitate their interpretation of the art. The number of prints, mostly 6-7 varies due to the changing enthusiasm for certain prints. I am always surprised when they vote on their favorite one that day! Those paintings with animals are always very popular as well as those that are brightly colored. Each grade level presentation is

age appropriate, with works that coincide with the Content Standards for California State Schools.

Lets Look at Art

Created soon after the founding of the San Jose Museum of Art in 1969. Lets Look at Art is an awardwinning SJMA program that sends docents into Bay Area Classrooms. Designed to teach children the joy of art while developing their observation, interpretation, and communication skills. This interactive program reached over 25,000 students last year. Lets Look at Art is the first exposure for over fifty percent of the students.

What do you hope the students learn from your visits? Self esteem! Teachers tell me time and time again that they are surprised that one student that normally will not participate in class activity is first to raise their hands and wants to be heard! It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and participation. They explain what they see and what story the painting is telling them, so nothing they say is ever wrong, the key is they just participate. They look for and describe the elements of art, color, line and shapes etc. I want them to learn to describe what they see and express their feelings and participate. Then I always hope that we turn a key to some locked passion for art! So often I leave the classroom and a student will run after me with something that they have drawn or painted. It is enormously rewarding to me.

MESSAGE FROM A NEIGHBOR

Reflections
Thank you RGNA for the plant you gave to me at the Neighborhood Annual Meeting in February. I would also like to thank many neighbors for their friendliness and kindness when I take my daily walks. This is so greatly appreciated. It is always a pleasure to see the many wonderful

dogs in the neighborhood. All are a joy to behold, and brighten my day. Also, how nice it is to see the wide array of beautiful trees that adorn the neighborhood. Stay positive and remember to respect each other. We all have a lot in common. Take care. Jim Scamardo longtime resident

Detailed aircraft flight tracking

The Mineta San Jos International Flight Tracking System, WebTrak, allows you to watch the movement of flights and air traffic patterns within the greater San Jose region. The WebTrak system also uses noise sensors that measure the volume of the neighborhood in decibels. These flight tracks, although taken from actual radar data, are not in real time. There is a delay of 10 minutes. This can be a useful tool if you notice an unusual overflight in the neighborhood and need to gather flight information for reporting purposes.
