KATHMANDU, SEP 18 Himal Iron and Steel, the first private sector factory of its kind in the country, entered the 50th year of operations on Sunday. Established by the late Maniharsha Jyoti, founder of the Jyoti Group, Himal Iron and Steel has grown to become one of the leading industrial units in

the iron and steel sector. Jyoti established the factory at Parwanipur in Parsa in 1961 when steel rods were not commonly used in construction with an initial investment of Rs 2.9 million. Over the years, Himal Steel has been used in many important infrastructure projects and buildings. The Karnali Bridge, Nepal Telecom building, Engineering College at Pulchowk, Sunkoshi Hydropower House, Kulekhani Hydropower Project, Soaltee Hotel, Everest Hotel, Indian Embassy and the British Council building are among the projects that used Himal Steel, according to the Jyoti Group. Likewise, Lincoln School at Ravi Bhawan, St Xaviers College at Maitighar, Kapan Monastery, Peace Monastery in Lumbini and numerous infrastructure projects have also used Himal Steel. The company started with an annual production capacity of 8,000 tons which has now been expanded to 70,000 tons. After the factory was established, we having been regularly expanding its capacity every 1015 years, said Padma Jyoti, chairman of the company. Currently, we have Rs 900 million invested in the form of equity and we have a production capacity of more than 70,000 tons annually. Himal Steel provides direct employment to more than 400 people including labourers and administrators. The company claims that it holds a 25 percent share of the steel rod market. At present there are two products of the company, cold twisted Torsteel bars and high strength TMT Tempcore bars. The company possesses state-of-the-art equipment and machinery and all the functions in the factory are carried out through automated and computerized systems.

Himal Iron & Steel (P) Ltd.

Himal Iron and Steel (P) Ltd. was established in 1961 and has emerged as a pioneering force in Nepals iron and steels production. The company began production with bars and subsequently led the nation into self sufficiency in the reinforcement steel industry. Today it produces world class cold twisted steel bars and has commenced productions of high strength Temp-core Steel Bars.Himal Temp-core is produced using the worlds most advanced Thermos Mechanical Treatment (TMT)-the Temcore process, under license from its inventors, centre de Rechaerche Metallurgiques (CRM),Belgium. Himal Iron & Steels is an ISO 9001 certified company. In the available range of TMT bars, Himal Temcore Stands out as the most reliable and genuine strong bar.

Himal Iron and Steel (P) Ltd. is renowned among its consumers for its high quality products, innovative features and customer friendly marketing.

Himal Steel Production

A Himal Steel rod is manufactured by heating a steel billet in a reheating furnace and rolling it through a sequence of rolling stands. This prograssively reduces the billet into a rod of desired shape and size. The rod is also rolled with ribs to increase the bound strenth. The strength of the rod is decided after the rolling process. It is the Torsteel/Tempcore process that givs the rod its subsequent strength.

Torsteel

Process
After the final rolling process, the steel rod is cooled and then cold-twisted in a controlled manner. Each rod is cold twisted individually. The rod is twisted beyond its yield limit and then released. This process raises the yield point of the steel rod and subsequently, its strength also increases. The twisting procedure also acts as a testing process because a rod with normally invisible rolling or production defects breaks during twisting.

TMT Tempcore

Process
After the final rolling process, the red-hot steel rod (over 1000 0C) is passed through a watercooling chamber (Quenching Box). Here, it is subjected to strong quenching (rapid cooling) on its surface. This causes the formation of high strength tempered marten-site structure on the surface and an austentic structure (mild steel) at the core. It is the presence of the very strong material on the surface that gives the rod its high strength and the soft material at the core that gives the rod its ductility.

The success of the process depends on the controlled cooling and tempering of the rod.

Advantages of Himal Steel

100% Tested

Himal Steel puts an enormous effort into the quality control of its products. Continuous quality tests are carried out in the mill to ensure high quality rods. Rods produced from each and every billet are 100% tested to assure that high quality steel rods are delivered to the customer.

Transparent Pricing
For the benefits of its customers, Himal Steel has a uniformed and transparent pricing system. All price changes are published in leading newspapers. Price lists are also prominently displayed at all Himal Steel depots in Nepal.

High Quality Raw Materials

Himal Steel uses only high-quality prime billets to ensure that the consumer get nothing but the best.

Customer Friendly
For the benefits of its customers, Himal Steel has over 106 depots all over Nepal including 51 depots in Kathmandu for easy accessibility. Himal Steel also offers free home delivery throughout Nepal. For large orders and projects, Himal Steel offers special facilities.

Product Range
Himal Steel rods are available in the diameters of 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25, 38 and 32 mm. In case of other specific size requirement, Himal Steel can produce them for large orders.

Correct Weight Tags

Every Himal Steel bundle comes with a computer generated weight tag. An automated machine weighs each and every bundle and a computer prints all weight tags instantly. This makes Himal Steel weight tags tamper proof.

Applications
Himal Steel rods are perfectly suited for all structures, large to small ranging from dams, power plants, bridges, factories, hotels to all types of commercial and residential structures.

Excellent Bond Strength

The lug pattern of himal tempcore bars has been specially designed to ensure that excellent bond strength exists between the bar and the surrounding concrete. The lugs are cut by automated machines, which produce uniform lugs.

Superior Bendablity
The tough outer surface and the ductile core of Himal Temcore results in excellent ductility and bendablity. The bar can be bent and re-band around mandrels much smaller than those specified in NS 191. This hash the added benefit of easy usability during construction. The superior bendablity of Himal Tempcore, compared to other conventional steel bars in the market makes fabrication easier.

Weldablity
The low carbon content ensures excellent weldablity. It can be butt-welded or lap-welded using ordinary rutile coated electrodes of matching strength. In manual arc welding no prewarming or post heat treatment is necessary

Corrosion Resistance Characteristics

Himal Temcore is produced by advanced thermo-mechanical treatment. There are no residual torsional stresses in the bars, endowing them with superior corrosion resistance in comparison to conventional bars.

Dimension Tolerance
The cross section and weight per meter is uniform and there variation is very narrow, due to rolling in mill stands, which has Steel Roller Bearing. Himal Iron guarantees that the normal weight does not go above or below the required weight of the steels per NS 191 standard.

High Strength and Ductility
