Community Discussion on "Teaching, Learning and Power" Hosted by: Chicago Public Media and Project on Civic Reflection Date: March 20 Time:6:30PM Location: WBEZ North Side Community Bureau, 2913 W. Faith and Public Health Leadership Institute The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation is partnering with the UIC Center for Public Health Practice to offer a Faith and Public Health Leadership Institute to bring teams of faith and public health leaders together to think and plan more deeply about how to address the root causes of health disparities. ("Leader" if broadly defined, including formal and informal, institutional and community, clergy and lay.) We are particularly focused on those working in HIV/AIDS, emergency preparedness, chronic disease, and food access. Prevention of Childhood Obesity: The Vital Role of Parent Training Hosted by: Chicago Public Media and Project on Civic Reflection Date: March 20 Time: 2PM Cost: Free The study, conducted by researchers from UCLA and Mattel Children's Hospital, found that a new parent-training program is effective in reducing the risk of low-income, preschool-age Latino children being overweight. After one year, there was a 9 percent reduction in overweight and obese children in the parent-training intervention group, while a control group that did not receive the parent training had a 16 percent increase in overweight and obese children. The intervention blended nutrition, physical activity and parenting topics delivered in a participatory manner. It was the first pilot intervention study that reversed the weight gain seen in preschool Latino children living in low-income families.
