Services
Well, this one is arguable. Many pros preach service tweaking as the end all of tweaks, and Windows does have a lot of services (140 to be exact). However, a good portion of them are set to manual or disabled by default. Manual will only start the service when the operating system thinks it needs to use that program. However, Windows does have a lot of services set to Automatic by default that are not needed for many people. Granted, they are usually sleeping, not using any CPU, and if they use memory, they usually get paged out to disk pretty fast. But, regardless, it is fairly quick to do, and will gain you some improvement. Accessing services allows you to access programs that are running in the background and while some are useful, there is quite a few that you could probably live without. And obviously turning these off will free up a lot of your PC's resources like the CPU and the Ram. It'll also speed up your boot times which can only be a good thing. Here's how to get to services:

1. Go to start and type in

Services.msc into your Windows search bar and select it.

2. Now you should be presented with the screen below. What this
basically shows you is all the programs running in your operating system. Some are good, some are not and some damn right essential so be careful!

The processes that are Started in the Status section are the ones that are running right now and are using your system's resources. So try to deactivate these ones for extra performance. 2

3. All you have to do is double click on the ones you don't want and click
on the menu next to Startup type.

WARNING!
Below I've created a chart of every service running in Windows. I've given you the default settings for each Windows package and a little description of each service to help you decide if you need it or not.. I've also given a tweaked mode that I use and this works for me very well. However if you do decide to use my tweaked setting you do so at your own risk. What necessary works for my computer might not work for yours so please take a care when altering the services. If your unsure I would set-up a system restore so if anything does go wrong, you can enter Windows in safe mode and restore services to how you had it before the changes. For those who aren't sure how to set-up a system restore, this is how to do it...

1. Now to create a restore point Simply go to start and go to control

panel. Then hit Control Panel

Just to let you know, whenever I mention the word start I am referring to the Windows sphere.

2. Once your in the Control Panel go to Back up your computer.

3. Then in the top left corner click on Create a restore point or change
settings.

4. This will take you to the system property Window. In here select
create

Call your restore point whatever you wish. Just remember what you called it just in case you do need to do a system restore.

5. Once you've done we

are now free to play around with Windows to our hearts content. If anything goes wrong all we have to do is a system restore to bring it back to it's default settings.
