Company Background:
Bangladesh is a young and developing nation with long history and culture. Over the last 20 years, Bangladesh has seen consistent GDP growth of above 5%. The story of one of Bangladeshs oldest industrial groups, A.K. Khan & Company Ltd, is intimately woven into the nations past, present and future. A.K. Khan & Company Ltd is one of the oldest and most renowned private sector organizations in Bangladesh. Late Janab Abul Kasem Khan, popularly known as A.K. Khan, established the company after the Second World War in 1945. Janab A.K. Khan started his business from Chittagong, and after India and Pakistan separated in 1947, Chittagong emerged as the foremost port city and business center of the country. Within a decade, A.K. Khan and Company Limited became a leading industrial powerhouse and a major contributor to the national economy. In the early 1950s, Janab A.K. Khan established Insurance Company, Financial Institution as well as manufacturing industries in Textiles, Jute, Plywood, Tannery, Heavy Electrical Goods, Shipping and Irrigation. From 1980s the Company started to grow through Joint Ventures (JV) with renowned Multinational Companies in Textile, Deep Sea Fishing, Telecommunication, Application Service Provider, Public Health, Agricultural Products and so on. Currently the company plans to establish new businesses in Hospitality Sector, Power Generation, Textiles, Real Estate, Green Jute Pulp and Paper Manufacturing and Community Based Water project.

Joint Ventures promoted by A. K. Khan & Co. Ltd. Khan-Elin Corporation Ltd. (1960): A joint venture with Elin Union AG, Austria, a subsidiary of Siemens AG of Germany. Involved in manufacturing electric motors, water pumps, electric fans, exhaust fans, transformers, switchboards, switchgears. Bengal Fisheries Ltd. (1979): A joint venture with the largest fishing company of the world, MARUHA NICHIRO CORPORATION of Japan. Involved in deep-sea fishing and export to Japan. Coats Bangladesh Ltd. (1989): A joint venture with multinational worlds largest Sewing Thread Manufacturer Coats Vieylla Group of UK. Involved in producing sewing thread for the export market. TM International Bangladesh Ltd. (1996): A joint venture company with Telekom Malaysia Berhad (Known as AKTEL), Malaysia, the largest Malaysian Investment in Bangladesh in GSM Technology in cellular telecommunication sector. However, AKKs stake had been sold to NTT Docomo, Japan in September 2008. AKCeycom Limited (1999): First Application Service Provider in Bangladesh. A joint venture between Ceylinco Consolidated Sri Lanka, the largest conglomerate in Sri Lanka and A. K. Khan & Co. Ltd. Bangladesh. A.K. Khan-Penfabric Company Limited (2009): A joint venture company with Penfabric Malaysia, 100% subsidiary of Toray Industries, Inc of Japan for textile yarn production for export. Commercial production of the first phase of Textile unit with 15,000 spindles started in April 2011. AK-Panbo Agro Limited (2010): A 100% export oriented mushroom project in collaboration with Panbo Systems BV, the Netherlands. Commercial production will start in November 2011. A.K. Khan Water Health Bangladesh Ltd. (2010) A community based water supply with Water Health Inc, USA and IFC to provide safe & pure water to urban and rural areas at an affordable cost.

A.K. Khan Foundation A.K. Khan Foundation (AKKF) is supported by A.K. Khan Group as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The organization is a not-for-profit and non-political Social Welfare Organization established in the year 1991 to materialize the dream of Late Mr. A.K. Khan - a legendary personality and pioneer of the industrialization in Bangladesh. 30% of the profits of A. K. Khan & Co. Ltd. has been earmarked for the well being of the community people especially for the improvement of Health & Education of the vulnerable group of the society.

Milestones
1945: Establishment of A. K. Khan & Co. Ltd. by Founder Chairman Late Janab A. K. Khan.

1945-1958: A total of 8 new companies were setup in the field of textile, shipping, jute, electronic motors, match and plywood. 1958-62: 1974: 1979: 1982: 1989: 1991: Janab A. K. Khan was inducted as Federal Minister for Industries, Works, Irrigation, Power and Natural Resources in General Ayub's cabinet of Pakistan. All major industrial units of the group was nationalized by the Govt. Bengal Fisheries Ltd was established as a pioneer of such industry in Deep Sea Fishing and Fish processing sector. Most of the nationalized units of A.K. Khan & Co. Ltd. were returned except Eastern Insurance and Eastern Mercantile Bank. Total Thread (later renamed Coats Bangladesh) was established as the pioneer sewing thread company. Janab A. K. Khan, pioneer industrialist of Bangladesh passed away.

1991-1995: Chairman Janab A. M. Zahiruddin Khan sworn in as Planning Minister and later took over as Industries Minister of The Government of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. 1996: 1999: 2002: 2009: 2010: Establishment of TM International (BD) Ltd, a joint venture Company awarded with cellular license incorporation with Telekom Malaysia Berhad. Establishment of AKCEYCOM Limited, a Joint Venture company in ASP/ISP services. Several Joint Venture Projects under process in Textile, International 5 Star Hotel and ICD Foundation Laying of Hotel Niketan, a 5 star hotel project at Chittagong; Joint Venture with PenFabric-Malaysia for Yarn Manufacturing industry.
