Character Education:
During the month of March we spent time talking about OWNERSHIP. Ownership is a difficult key to use because it is hard to admit when we make mistakes. Ownership is also about taking responsibility for actions and ourselves, whether we are making good or bad choices. This month, our Student-ofthe-Month Winner is Logan. During the month of April, we will be focusing on the THIS IS IT key. We will be learning that sometimes we have to make the best of a situation and just do it. Can you think of things you dont prefer to do that you have to do anyway? Does a positive attitude help?

Virtual Student Teacher Update:
Earlier in March, Miss Broderick joined us via video conferencing to teach us one of her favourite recipes. Over the Internet, she demonstrated how to make lemon oreo cookies.

We watched her demonstration and then followed the steps to make them ourselves. The recipe was pretty simple and they tasted delicious! We decided to make another batch later that day and share with the teachers at Ryerson. They were a big hit! Miss Broderick wrote about this experience in the following blog post: http://broderit.wordpress .com/2012/03/10/lemon -oreos/

School Spirit Day Friday, April 27th

On Saturday, March 31st most of the students in Gill-Ville attended Edcamp Waterloo Region, our areas first ever edcamp! The students were involved in a technology showcase session where they each presented a project or tech tool to other students in the session and teachers that were attending the event. The Gill-Villeans represented us very well and impressed educators from eleven different school boards across Ontario. It is safe to say that they stole the show! If you are a Twitter user you can check out the #edcampwr hash tag to see what educators are saying about our students and event. Our students shared social media sites such as Twitter, Edmodo, and blogging. Some students shared iPad apps and multimedia projects like our Pan-Canada ePub project. The Gill-Villeans rose to the challenge and inspired educators to learn and try new technology tools. You can learn more about our class showcase sharing by reading a blog post written by a well known Ontario Edublogger, Doug Peterson, who came to see us the day before and wrote all about us! http://dougpete.wordpress.com/ 2012/03/31/the-day-beforeedcamp/

The students also had a large part in helping prepare for the event. In the days leading up to Edcamp Waterloo, the students were eager to show off their baking skills as they made a variety of muffins, cookies, scones, and other treats. They were such a big hit that many educators have tweeted us looking for recipes to some of our goodies! The lemon Oreos that Miss Broderick taught us how to make were quickly devoured and made us famous!

The oreo cookie assembly line The students in our class also invited Edcamp Waterloo participants to bring donations for the Spring Food Drive. Attendees rose to the challenge and we collected 76 items! These are our Food Bank donations thanks to Edcamp Waterloo attendees. We appreciate the support.

The students that participated received special event T-Shirts from Smart Pen Central and apple swag from one of our sponsors. To show our appreciation, the students created Thank You messages that we sent digitally. Check out the student blogs for their recap of the event and special messages to our supporters. The students in Gill-Ville have been learning about various ways to help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. After learning about the polar bear migration and issues with climate change on their habitat, the students felt a call to action! One thing we decided to do was to raise awareness about the waste humans create. Our class already shows leadership for the school recycling and composting programs, so we decided to go to the next level and learn about eWaste. We also challenged Edcamp participants to bring their old electronics (pictured above). During Earth Week, we will also invite the Ryerson community to drop off their eWaste! More information will be coming home about this soon! Imagine a Show:
Our class is gearing up to show off our photography skills for the WRDSBs Imagine a Show event, taking place at Conestoga Mall in May. We have been talking about camera angles, setting our scene, lining up and centering our shots, and keeping still, avoiding blurry photos. During class time, we will be focusing on the suggested themes The Wonders of Nature and School Days. We would like each student to submit 2-3 photos for the show. Each student needs a permission form signed and returned to school in order to participate and have their work featured in the show. Please complete the attached form and return to school by Wednesday, April 11th. For more information about the show, visit: http://imagineashow.com/

Aladdin Play- Trip to Cedar Creek PS:

Our class will be traveling to Cedar Creek P.S. in Ayr on Wednesday, April 25th to attend the school performance of Aladdin! We will travel by bus, leaving school just before first nutrition break and returning just after second break. Although we will need to alter our eating times that day, we will still eat at school. Students that have ordered RMi will still receive their meals. Trip forms will be coming home in the next few days. There is no cost to you for this event!

Advertising and Cooking Shows:

We have been looking at advertising and components of cooking shows to help prepare us for producing our own commercials and cooking segments. Over the next three weeks we will be recording video footage for this project. There will be small parts of this project coming home for homework, so read homework folder instructions carefully over the next few weeks!
