Provenance

Walter C. Waters
Walter Waters went to Alaska in 1998 during the gold rush and settled in Wrangell. Shortly after arriving in Alaska he began collecting Indian art and artifacts. He traveled extensively up and down the coast of southeast Alaska delivering mail by boat, leading National Geological survey teams and buying furs. During his travels he established numerous contacts with Indian artists from whom he purchased material for his personal collection and later his store. Early in the 1900s he opened the first Bear Totem Store. In the 1920s he purchased Healeys Trading Post, further expanding his store and collection. After his death, his widow, Mabel Waters, sold much of his collection to the Burke Museum in Seattle and the Denver Art Museum.
