Questions : 1. What is a galvanic cell used for?

A galvanic cell is an electrochemical cell that derives electrical energy from spontaneous redox reaction taking place within the cell.

2. What is an electrolytic cell used for?

Electrolytic cell is used to produce chemical reaction by passing electricity within an electrolyte or ionic molten compound.

3. Give 3 differences between a galvanic cell and electrolytic cell. Galvanic Cell
A galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Here, the redox reaction is spontaneous and is responsible for the production of electrical energy. The two half-cells are set up in different containers, being connected through the salt bridge or porous partition. Here the anode is negative and cathode is positive electrode. The reaction at the anode is oxidation and that at the cathode is reduction. The electrons are supplied by the species getting oxidized. They move from anode to the cathode in the external circuit.

Electrolytic Cell
An electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy. The redox reaction is not spontaneous and electrical energy has to be supplied to initiate the reaction. Both the electrodes are placed in a same container in the solution of molten electrolyte.

Here the anode is positive and cathode is the negative electrode. The reaction at the anode is oxidation and that at the cathode is reduction. The external battery supplies the electrons. They enter through the cathode and come out through the anode.

4. What happen if the ciruit is wrongly connected for both galvanic and electrolytic cell?
The voltmeter will deflect to left.

Conclusion :
As the electrons are transferred they are tapped in order to provide the voltage. A good analogy for the flow of electrons is the flow of water which flows spontaneously downhill. In order for a redox reaction to serve as a source of power, the reaction must be spontaneous. If the reaction in non-spontaneous, we can use the electricity to make the reaction activating. An electrolytic cell is a device that uses electricity to drive a non-spontaneous redox reaction.Whereas, the galvanic cell will convert the chemical energy into electrical energy. In a nutshell, the field of electrochemistry has two important applications, the use of spontaneous redox reactions to generate electricity, and the use of electricity to force non-spontaneous redox reaction to occur.
