PRESTART CHECKLIST completed, specimen inserted and vacuum system returned to V1 & V3 illuminated and HV is off. 2. BEAM CONTROL module: FILAMENT at 0, COMPENSATION at 2 - SPOT SIZE at 500, fine adjust fully CCW 3. Set accelerating voltage HIGH TENSION and depress ON button (illuminated) 4. Set MAGNIFICATION fully CCW - ZOOM is OFF (not illuminated). 5. Set FOCUS SPEC. POS. to EUC. LOW or EUC. HIGH (depending on WD) 6. SCAN MODE set to ))) (Line) 7. Set right CRT MODE to Y 7. DETECTOR CONTROL module: DETECTOR CONTROL ON button depressed (illuminated), GAIN set to 90, adjust BLACK LEVEL until line scan on VIDEOSCOPE and right imaging CRT just displaces upwards (~150) 8. Slowly turn FILAMENT emission knob CW until EMISSION current meter reading begins to rise 9. While watching line scans, continue increasing FILAMENT emission (CW) until waveform stabilizes (Adjust GAIN & BLACK LEVEL if needed) 10. Adjust GUN TILT X & Y to maximize waveform height 11. SCAN MODE to TV, right imaging CRT MODE to Z 12. Center beam within aperture shadow on imaging CRT using GUN SHIFT X & Y 13. Adjust SPOT SIZE to desired size (i.e. 50 or 100) NORMAL SHUT DOWN 1. DETECTOR CONTROL module: DETECTOR CONTROL OFF button out not illuminated, GAIN set to 0, BLACK LEVEL set to 999+ 2. BEAM CONTROL module: FILAMENT at 0 (fully CCW), COMPENSATION at 2 (fully CW) - SPOT SIZE at 500, fine adjust fully CCW 3. HIGH TENSION module OFF (button out and non-illuminated), Range set to 1-3 (Fully CCW) 4. Specimen out, and column evacuated 5. VACUUM SYSTEM indicates V1 & V3 illuminated, HV not illuminated 6. MAGNIFICATION module: MAGNIFICATION fully CW, ZOOM button out and not illuminated 7. Both viewing CRT's BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST set to marked settings, MODE set to Z 8. SCAN MODE set to TV 9. All PRESTART conditions are set.

INSERTING AND REMOVING SPECIMENS A. VENTING SPECIMEN CHAMBER 1. Turn Sodium Vapor light on - allow 10 mins to warm up 2. FILAMENT off, fully CCW, HIGH TENSION off, DETECTOR CONTROL Off 3. Specimen tilt to 15E to engage venting interlock switch, (tilt lock to UNLOCKED) Remember 4. Depress VACUUM SYSTEM OFF & AIR, wait until specimen chamber vents

NEVER TOUCH CHAMBER INTERIOR OR ANY COMPONENTS WITHOUT GLOVES !

B. INSERTING SINGLE SPECIMEN 1. Overhead fluorescent room lights MUST be off (SE detector scintillator is very sensitive to light saturation and is easily damaged even when turned off!) 2. Open specimen chamber door 3. Using forceps, insert specimen stub pin into stage mounting hole 4. Place Lucite height adjustment gauge over specimen assembly, rotate lucite gauge until specimen is level with top edge of adjustment gauge, remove gauge. -- Use Allen wrench to loosen Z-height set screw if needed (rotate external specimen rotation knob if needed to access set screw) 5. Lift door assembly and engage locking mechanism for upper WD [12mm]. Raise door assembly, disengage upper WD locking mechanism, and carefully lower door assembly for lower WD [34mm] - Use Lower (34mm) WD for X-ray micro-analysis C. REMOVING A SINGLE SPECIMEN 1. Overhead fluorescent room lights MUST be off (SE detector scintillator very sensitive to light saturation and is easily damaged!) 2. Open specimen chamber door 3. Using Allen wrench, loosen stub retaining screw at base of stub mounting assembly (rotate external specimen rotation knob if needed to access set screw) 4. Using forceps, remove specimen stub pin into stage mounting hole D. EVACUATING SPECIMEN CHAMBER 1. With un-gloved (naked) finger wipe o-ring and o-ring seat door seals. 2. Close door firmly 3. With door firmly closed, depress and release VACUUM SYSTEM AIR button (unilluminated) 4. Depress VACUUM SYSTEM ON button (OFF button should illuminate) 5. When roughing pumping begins listen to ensure the door is fully closed 6. Vacuum system is ready when VACUUM SYSTEM V1 & V3 are illuminated and HV is off

SHUT DOWN NORMAL SHUT DOWN 1. BEAM CONTROL module: FILAMENT at 0 (fully CCW), COMPENSATION at X (fully CW) - SPOT SIZE at 500, fine adjust fully CCW 2. HIGH TENSION module OFF (button out and unilluminated), Range set to 1-3 (Fully CCW) 3. Specimen out, and column evacuated 4. VACUUM SYSTEM indicates V1 & V3 illuminated, HV not illuminated 5. SPOT SIZE at 500, fine adjust fully CCW 6. MAGNIFICATION module: MAGNIFICATION fully CW, ZOOM button out and not illuminated 7. Both viewing CRT's BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST set to marked settings, MODE set to Z 8. SCAN MODE set to TV 9. DETECTOR CONTROL module: DETECTOR CONTROL OFF button out not illuminated, GAIN set to 0, BLACK LEVEL set to 999+ 10. All PRESTART conditions are set.

11. 13. Lights off FULL SHUT DOWN

Full shut down is to be done ONLY in case of: a. Interruption of building utility services (Electrical or Water) b. Vacuum system failure c. Instruction of EMF Staff

1. Push red SHUTDOWN button lower left panel - Lights on right panel will go out and scope will go quite 2. Switch breaker box to OFF 3. Cooling water recirculator manual switch to OFF TURNING SCOPE ON AFTER FULL SHUT DOWN

To be done ONLY after correction of the reason for the full shut down

1. Breaker box to ON 2. Cooling water recirculator manual switch to ON 3. Push Black START UP button lower left panel - pumps will start, some lights will come on

L After 30-45 mins, the MAGNIFICATION display will read 00000 (Left upper panel) should be
illuminated indicating the scope is functioning.
