CONCRETE WORK

This work will consist of the way of production & supply of concrete to the work site. This will be included form work as required, work supports like platform for easy working manner & for safety, treatment & curing, furnishing of all materials & cleanup of all concrete.

Cement

Cement will be stored in a weatherproof, waterproof & reasonably airtight building which enable for inspection. Cement bags will be numbered for easy identification. The storekeeper will take nessary action to avoid issuing bad quality (caked or lumpy) cement to the work site. Ordinary Portland cement complies with BS12 will be used. Will submit the test certificates relating to each consignment of cement to the engineer for his approval. Water

The water use for the work will be potable clean fresh & free from injurious quantities of silt, organic matters, alkali, salt, oil, acid or other impurities. Will be using the engineer approved water sources for the concreting work.

Aggregate

The main stockpiles of aggregate will be stored at a place, where enables not to stagnate water and avoid from contamination of foreign materials. The bottom layers of aggregate will remain for every stock pile. Each size of fine & coarse aggregates will be stored separately. Fine & coarse aggregate will be used for the work after getting approval from the engineer. Natural sand will be used as fine aggregate. Will be used 10mm, 20mm, & 40mm coarse aggregate for the work.

Batching of constituents

Volume batching will be adopted for nominal mixtures. A steel box with internal dimensions of 350mm X 350mm X 286mm will be used for measuring volumes of cement & aggregates. A calibrated 15 liter GI bucket will be used to measure the volume of water. The quantity of water to be added will be decided by doing slump tests for each & every batch of early stages of concrete operations. In general slump tests will be carried out for initial & medium batches of concrete. If the dampness or the grading of aggregate changes, additional tests will be performed.

Mixing of concrete

Using mixtures with rated capacity more than a bag batch will do mixing of concrete at site. Concrete will be uniformly and thoroughly mixed to the required consistency and therefore minimum time of mixing concrete would not be controlled to less than 3 minutes. For this stand by units will available in the site during the period of mixing the concrete. All operators handling vibrators will be trained in their operation properly. The following nominal mix proportions (by volume) will be used. 25/20 20/20 15/40 1:1 : 3 (20) 1 :2 : 4 (20) 1 :3 : 6 (40)

Grade 35A This will be used for water retaining structures. For the base slab of intake well, walls of intake well & for the cover slab of intake well this will be used. For the mixture, Ordinary Portland cement complies with BS12, fine aggregate & coarse aggregate 10mm & 20 mm will be used. For this concrete mix design will be suggested by the contractor & after getting the approval from the engineer for the same will be proceed.

Placing of concrete

The method for placing of concrete will be worked out to prevent segregation of the material & before concreting begins Engineers approval will be taken. Before placing concrete all formwork therein will be cleaned of all extraneous material and dust and made free of any standing water. In continuing concrete, fresh concrete will be placed before the already placed concrete is less than 20 minutes. Concrete will be placed & compacted in horizontal layers normally not exceeding 300mm in depth. Concrete will not be dropped from a height greater than 1.5m to prevent segregation. According to the full height (nearly 7m) of the intake well, concerting will be carried in 1.2m height rings at once. Due to this for easy work man ship temporary platforms will be using form level to level. Electrical or mechanical hoist will be used with a bucket.

Concrete will be free of all rock pockets, honey combs & voids. Complete Records showing the details of placing concrete in each part of the work will be maintained and will be available for inspection at the site.

Compacting / vibrating of concrete

Mechanical vibrators will be used for compaction. For this stand by units will available in the site during the period of compacting. All operators handling vibrators will be trained in their operation properly. Curing

Continuous curing will be carried out in a moist atmosphere for a minimum period of 10 days and for a further period required by engineer. Concrete area will be kept covered with absorptive mat or other similar water absorbing material which will be kept moist throughout the curing period.

Construction joints.

The surface of the hardened concrete will be cleaned and made free from laitance, and will also have an exposed aggregate finish. The fresh concrete will be placed and compacted so that it bonds properly to the prepared surface of the previously laid concrete. Laitance on the surface will be completely removed from the concrete in order to achieve a good bond with fresh concrete. Between one and two hours after placing concrete, water will be sprayed gently and laitance will be removed with two brushes, one with soft and other with hard bristles. After finishing this operation, just the tips of the aggregate should be showing. If the laitance has hardened, a wire brush will be used to remove it. Clean water will be rinsed to get rid of the dust. Water stops in construction joints will be installed & approval for this will be taken from the engineer.

Built in pipes to concrete structures

Pipes and other items passing through concrete structures shall wherever practicable be built in to the structure as work proceeds.

Checking water content & slump test

Frequent slump test will be carried out in accordance with BS 1881 on samples of concrete taken immediately before placing to determine the consistency of concrete. All the test reports will be maintained in the site office & will be available for the inspection whenever required. Loading of concrete structures

Until the concrete mature for at least 7 days, no external load will be applied to any part of concrete structure. After get the confirmation on 28 days strength report from the engineer loading will be proceed. Testing of concrete

All necessary arrangements for the sampling & testing of fresh & harden concrete in accordance with the BS 1881 will be taken. Crushing test will be carried out on concrete cubes formed in 150mm molds. One set of cubes (2 cubes crushed in 7 days & other in 28days) will be done to maintain the quality of work. Particular care will be taken to ensure that the test cubes are stored under uniform conditions in the site & during any transit between site & laboratory. Reinforcing steel

Engineers approval will be obtained for reinforcement before using in permanent works. All reinforcement will be stored on racks inside the stores. Different types & sizes will be kept separately. All reinforcement will be kept to protected from damage, free from dirt, loose mill scale, rust scale paint, oil, or other foreign substances. As per the specifications & drawing, the bar bending schedules & bar lists, cutting schedules for Each individual structure will be prepared by the contractor and will obtained the approval from the engineer. Manual cutter or mechanical cutter will be used for cutting of bars & bending machine will be used for bending of bars. All reinforcement will be cleaned by a wire brush or any other means before placing. All reinforcement placed should comply with the drawings. Lap length will be taken in to account according to the specification when binding reinforcement bars.

Allowable clear cover will be provided before fixing formwork according to the specification. Form work

All formwork will be made by using plywood sheets, timber or by metal. Supports and scaffolding will be G I pipes, Acro propes, sawn timber or round timber. All surfaces of formwork will be finished smooth and mortar tight. The dimensions & position of formwork will be carefully checked after erection. Oil or grease will be used to avoid adhesion of mortar and to achieve a smooth surface. Before placing concrete all dirt, wood chips, hardened concrete or mortar and all other foreign matter will be removed from the forms. No internal wall ties will be used for fixing form work in walls of intake well. Before fixing of form work, detailed drawing will be submitted to the engineer for approval. Well qualified formans will be appointed for fixing on formworks & reinforcement work.
