guitarIhavehadtheprivilegeofstudyingthesolosofmanygreatguitaristsandworkingwith
manygreatstudents.Mygoalinwritingthisbookistointroducemyguitarstudentstophrases,
licksandideasthatIfindcommontomanyleadguitaristsandsolos.Theselicksarepresented
roughlyinorderofdifficulty.Eachhasashortdescriptiontohelpexplainwhyitisincludeditin
thiscollection.

First,letmesaythatlicks,prerehearsedsolophrases,arejustonecomponentofimprovising.
Trueimprovisationisplayingsomethingwehaveneverplayedbeforeonourinstrument.This
maybethegreatestachievementinaguitarsolo.However,manyguitarsoloswehearare
composedor,atbest,aspontaneousreorganizationofpreviouslylearnedphrasesandmaterial.If
notessential,itisatleastpracticaltoknowsomeprerehearsedlicksforthosetimeswhenwe
arenotcatchinglightninginabottle.

Second,aretheselickstrulymustknow?Theonlywaytodecideistotrythemyourself.Itall
dependsonyourmusicalstyleandgoals.Notwoguitaristsarealike.Keepthelicksyoulikehere,
throwoutthoseyoudont.Manyofmyfavoriteguitaristsmashupdifferentideasandmusical
stylessoIbelieveitanadvantagetolearnallthatlicksyoucan.Attheveryleast,knowingthe
