15-20 minutes

Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations) We will begin on the carpet where I will read aloud a fairy tale. My students know that fairy tales can start with once upon a time so after I read the first page beginning with once upon a time I will ask What genre or type of story is this? If a student does answer fairy tale I will ask how do you know? They should include something about the phrase once upon a time. After we read the story we will discuss the characters, setting and plot. These are terms they should be familiar with. We will record these on a sheet of paper. I will then explain to the students that in fairy tales there is usually conflict or a problem and some sort of solution. Fairy tales also can lead to moral of the story or a lesson. We will then record what the conflict is and the solution, or conclusion, as well as what they think the moral of the story is. Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs Once we are finished with our story map as a call I will explain that they will start to organize their own fairy tale and explain the story map sheet they will be completing. We will go over what the work sheet says. We will also discuss expectations. Students are to be working alone quietly. I will then release students back to their desks by calling table colors. They will then work independently to complete their story map. My role will be to walk around the classroom and assist students when they need it. I want original ideas for their fairy tales so I will only

be helping with spelling and clarifying the worksheet for students that are confused. I will not lend my ideas as to what they should be writing.

5 minutes

Summary/Closing: To close I will call on a few student volunteers to share what they wrote. I will explain to them that tomorrow they will be writing their very own fairy tale using this story map. We will again discuss what components fairy tales have and I will emphasis that good fairy tales have a lot of detail. Student Assessment: At the end of our discussion I will be looking to see if students know what components are Needed to create a fairy tale? Are students actively engaging in our discussion and using examples from the mini lesson? I will also collect the worksheets and check to see if students are creating a strong start to their fairy tale or do I need to sit down with specific students tomorrow before we begin the writing process and help clarify some things for them?
