By: Nicole Kolts ID#199497 College of Education Madonna University Winter 2012 March 1st, 2012

Lesson Plan for: First Grade Goal: Understand the beginning, middle and end of the story, and the sequence on connections we see throughout the story, which the students can reflect upon their own understanding. Developmental/Lesson Objective: Children will be able to make connections to the text and reflect upon their own understanding. GLCC: R.NT.01.03- Identify problem/solution, sequence of events, and sense of story (beg, mid, end) R.NT.01.05-Respond to individual and multiple texts by finding evidence, discussing, illustrating and/or writing to reflect, make connections, take a position, and/or show understanding. R.IT.01.04-Respond to individual and multiple texts by finding evidence, discussing, illustrating and/or writing to reflect, make connections, take a position, and/or show understanding. Rationale: This lesson will be a great way for students to understand themselves, and learn the sequence of events throughout a story. Also students will understand the introduction, climax and conclusion. Anticipatory Set: To start, I will introduce the book The Color of Me written by Brynne Barnes, to the children. I will tell them that this book has a lot of pictures about the world around them and the child will throughout the book and learning its sequence of the story appreciate a world filled with all colors that paint the earth and sky. Procedure: 1. Have the students all sit together. 2. Introduce the book The Color of Me. 3. Ask them what they think it is going to be about. 4. Start reading the book. 5. Emphasize together as group the beginning, middle and end of the story. 6. Then introduce new vocab introduction, climax and conclusion, once you re read the lesson. 7. As you re-read the lesson as a class together mark the book with bookmarks, such as post it notes. 8. After you finish reading and marking the story together give the students each their own book. 9. Then tell the students that they need to make their own world in a storybook from each part of the story beginning, middle and end. Materials: -The Color of Us Book -Post it notes -Bookmarks

-Individual blank children books -Paper -Crayons -Pencils Evaluations: What things went well? What would I change for next time? What went wrong? When forming this lesson, I realized how many lessons could be conducted with the use of this book. I feel as though connecting with a book for a lesson can really help with an activity for the students to understand the concept better. Assessment: I would assess the children by asking them what the three parts of the story were, and if there pictures correlated with each part of the story. I could also see if the child marked their book correctly for each part of the story. Overall I would observe what children understood the concept and what children did not.
