Corporate summary
Colgate-Palmolive Company is a US-based multinational producer of oral hygiene and personal and home care
and pet nutrition. Its products are marketed in over 200 countries across the globe.
In 2008, Colgate-Palmolives share in cosmetics and toiletries remained unchanged at 3.9%. The firms share in
household care dropped .10 percentage points from 3.7% in 2007 to 3.6% in 2008. Colgates main business is oral
hygiene. Brazil and China offer the greatest opportunities for oral hygiene, but Colgate lost shares in both the
markets to competitors offering products geared towards local taste.

Geographic expansion
(March) Colgate-Palmolive plans to expand distribution of natural oral- and personal-care brand Toms of Maine into
selective channels in the US as well as to actively seek distribution opportunities in developed global markets.

Acquisitions
(March) Colgate-Palmolive Company has purchased a majority of natural products manufacturer Toms of Maine, a leader
in the natural product market in the US. The deal is part of Colgates strategy to focus on its higher-margin oral and
personal care businesses, the company said in the announcement. The acquisition offers Colgate the opportunity to enter
the fast growing health and specialty channel, where Toms toothpaste is the market leader with a 60% market share.
Advertising & marketing
(October) Brooke Shields, 41, has been signed up to promote Colgate toothpaste in the US, nearly four decades after her
she first advertised the brand, in print ads as a child.
Distribution & logistics
(April) Colgate-Palmolive upgrades its procurement system for materials and services, a move estimated to save the
company $30m by 2008
Divestments and demergers
(December) Colgate announced its agreement to sell its Latin American and Canadian bleach brands to The Clorox Company
for $126 million. Brands include Javex, Agua Jane and Nevex.

Acquisitions
(June 1) The company purchases the remaining shares of GABA Holding AG for CHF1,051 million (US$841 million). The
agreement to buy GABA, a privately-owned European oral care company, was signed and announced in December 2003.
Business agreements
(December) Colgate-Palmolive Canada enters into a long term supply agreement with KCP Income Fund, a leading North
American provider of private label bleach, laundry and household care products through its operating subsidiaries KIK
Holdco Company and KIK Operating Partnership, to manufacture certain bleach, fabric softeners and laundry additives
marketed in Eastern and Central Canada, including the Javex Bleach and Fleecy Fabric Softener brands.
Restructuring
(December) Colgate-Palmolive has announced a range of drastic restructuring programs that will close one third of its 78
Colgate factories worldwide. This will trigger a 12% reduction of its 37,000 workforce, or about 4,400 employees.
The program has three major objectives: to increase its gross and operating profit by generating additional savings, to
accelerate innovative marketing and new products, and to maximize effectiveness of global advertising and commercial
investment funds for the increase of worldwide market shares.
