* Know your region. Grass seed is not one size fits all. Select the right grass seed or sod based on where you live. Its also important to consider how you plan to use your lawn. Do you have children and pets that will be playing on it regularly, or will the purpose be primarily curb appeal? To determine the right grass, talk to your local garden center or contact the turf grass specialist at your state agriculture school. Growing and maintaining a lush green lawn doesnt have to come with a backache. Basic planning and a few tips will have you well on your way to a backyard prime for the summer season. *Break out the ruler. The maintenance crews for professional sports fields are meticulous about the height of their grass to ensure a uniform look. Grass Seed USA recommends maintaining a lawn height of about 2. Its important not to cut more than 1/3 of the grass height at a time to minimize damage, so aim to mow when your lawn is about 3 inches in height.

tropical hardwoods and others provide an appearance with less color variation. When combined with a modular composite railing system that provides similar high performance and long-lasting beauty, composite decking offers endless mix-and-match options for incredible design flexibility to suit the style of any home. * Ultra-low maintenance - The newest composites retain their beauty for decades with minimal upkeep, meaning youll spend more time enjoying - rather than maintaining - your deck this summer and for years to come. In fact, you never need to worry about sanding, staining or painting - just do a simple soap and water cleaning twice a year. Since spills, splashes and other mishaps are inevitable, its extremely important to select a composite that guarantees no-fade color - so that your decking remains looking the same for decades as it did on the day it was installed. * Strong warranties - Lengthy warranties on next generation composites guarantee enduring good looks and offer additional peace-of-mind. In fact, Trex Transcend decking is backed by a 25-year Limited Fade and Stain Warranty, which is unprecedented in the industry and adds another layer of protection to Transcends standard 25-year warranty - resulting in the ultimate assurance of lasting beauty. Todays composite decking is proof that sometimes the best can get even better, says Zambanini. It combines unprecedented performance and aesthetics - taking the outdoor living experience to a whole new level for homeowners. owners and homeowners who love their existing composite decks. Following are four key attributes to look for when purchasing composite decking: * Superior durability - Spilled food, dropped grill tools and wet planter pots are no match for newer composites like the highperformance Trex Transcend collection. Transcend offers an unprecedented combination of fade, stain and mold resistance thanks to its exclusive protective shell and high-traffic formulation. Regardless of harsh weather conditions or daily wear and tear, Transcend also will not rot, warp or scratch. * Realistic colors and textures - With high-definition wood grain patterns and rich, saturated colors inspired by the outdoors, todays composites look more natural than ever before and boast a vibrancy that remains unchanged for years. Color options range from deep earth tones to warm umbers, spicy reds and pristine greys - while some boards offer the distinct streaked look of

TIPS FOR CREATING A STADIUM-STYLE LAWN IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD * Arm yourself with the right tools. The proper equipment can take a lawn from looking well-manicured to professional. When selecting a mower, dont jump straight to those that pick up the grass clippings. Allowing the clippings to decompose in the lawn will add to the overall health of your yard, and when you mow often, the shavings are small and less noticeable. Adding an edger to your arsenal is another great trick for cleaning up the lines and defining your yard. * Replenish as necessary. Grass is a natural carpet that cleans and repairs itself. Its equipped to withstand a number of elements yet is impacted over time. If youve noticed that your lawn is sparse in areas, or not as full and lush as youd like, it may be time to add more seed.

TIPS FOR CREATING A STADIUM-STYLE LAWN IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD* According to Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers, many homeowners over water their lawns, which does more harm than good. A simple trick to determine whether your lawn needs watering is to stick a screwdriver into the grass. If it enters the dirt easily, your lawn has plenty of water already. If you have trouble getting the screwdriver into the ground, it is time to give the grass a drink. However, putting your lawn on a quarterly schedule will help achieve optimal health.

LILAC WALKING TOUR TO BLOOM IN SCHUYLERVILLE annual Gardeners Weekend, May 12th May 13th 2012. Each variety of lilac was chosen for its combination of color, floret shape, fragrance and bloom time under the direction of Jeff Young, curator of the Vermont Horticultural Farm collection. The Future Farmers of America from the Schuylerville Central School and the Schuyler Farms Garden Center did the planting and aid in the maintenance.
