VISSER Summer Workshop May 14-28, 2012 SYLLABUS (Collaboration between the University of the Philippines and University

of Maryland) Course Description This is a highly structured course to design scientific instrumentation to modernize scientific and technological instruction in Philippine schools. The participants will be introduced to the basics of the Arduino microcontroller platform, sensors, and basic circuit concepts. The Arduino is arguably the hottest open source platform. It has enjoyed raving revues from power hackers as well as leading popular science and trade magazines such as a Wired and Make, citing its ease of use as one of the leading attributes for widespread acceptance. In this workshop, this training will be used to design a versatile system that can perform fundamental experiments in areas of the basic sciences. The goal is to create unique, sophisticated yet economical laboratory experimental modules that can be replicated in various secondary schools and colleges. The class will be divided into several teams, each one comprised of a newly admitted high school, an upper class science or engineering student from the University of the Philippines, a high school teacher, and a faculty mentor, and will be supported by instructors and technicians to assist in fabrication. The team will discuss the needs of current classrooms in science teaching and address ways to modernize the pedagogical delivery of the material. The team receive just in time instructions in hardware and C programming, electronics, signals and processing, numerical tools, project management, team dynamics and leadership, as well as draw upon in others unique perspectives. At the end of the 2-week period, it is anticipated that complete laboratory modules, which include the physical components, the data acquisition and analysis software, and a laboratory manual will be produced by each of the teams.
